The Neuro that both Staffy-lover and I have seen (Ryde Speciliast Clinic - Dr Georgina Childs) recommends it as it is beneficial for the brain (exactly how I am unsure). I have started my guys (all of them... and the cat!) on 1 capsule a day. The main difference I have noticed is in their coats. I have always fed sardines but the fish oil has made a big difference, particularly for the cat. Ok. Great information. Human fish oil tabs ok to give?? I will incorporate these into Bobby's diet. Thanks Varicool. Bobby is now at Sydney Vet Hospital under observation and having blood tests. See *Oh Lordy what an afternoon* thread for more details.

Wow!! Watching that Youtube footage it seems that this is exactly what Bobby had today... A seizure!! The poor mite would recover tho and be trembling and panting, then relapse into another seizure all stiff and googley eyed again. Thank for posting that Varicool!! It proves very helpful. So what does fish oil aid with? I just bought some for human consumption but is it worthwhile giving Bobby some??

Sounds exactly like what my Ruby was doing. Well keep us updated. Until you know the root of the problem it is going to be a case of trial and error. With Ruby I basically have to thoroughly scan all food products that I potentially buy her now. Anything with protein has to be checked whether it is a chicken OR beef protein source. AND dont fall under the trap just because it says 'chicken' or 'chicken flavoured' that it only has that said product in it. I was buying chicken mince only to find out it had beef by-products in it. ALWAYS check the ingredients as most dog products have some sort of beef by-product in them. I had to learn this the hard way.

When the bowel system is inflamed it can take a good 1-2 weeks for it to normalise again, so my opinion on that would be that it is possible that the beef has affected him... and wont get back to normal until the cause of allergic reaction is completely out of the system and on a diet that can be tolerated. Boiled rice would probably be the safest option at this stage until his system has settled right down again, then perhaps seek your vets advice as to putting him onto a diff diet such as the Tuckertime - 2kg roll costs approx $13

From what you described it sounds likely to be canine colitis. My Ruby suffers from this ailment, and when particularly bad the poor baby even has bloody mushy stools. I have Ruby on a diet of Tuckertime because of the colitis. I am 80% sure she is allergic to beef products, but also sometimes gets a bout if I feed her raw chicken. It is a process of elimination as to ascertain what the dog may be allergic to, so in my case I have just stuck with feeding her 'Tuckertime' (only avail from selected vets) Chicken and Veg variety as the Three Meats still causes her to have the bouts of colitis, and she has never had a problem since. Does the pup also seem to be uncomfortable at all, like doing doggy prayer stretches? If so, the poor tum is prob giving the pup grief also. Hope this helps a little. It sounds exactly what Ruby was doing a couple of yrs back...

It is with sadness that I advise that Ruby's first 'sister' FOXY (a rescued girl that I had with my ex husband) has been given her wings and has crossed The Rainbow Bridge. Apparently she had a brain tumour and from the intitial diagnosis she declined very rapidly and lasted no longer than two weeks before she was given her wings by her only vet in Riverstone so that she would suffer no more pain. Foxy came into our care and was a great source of fun and companionship to Ruby. Unfortunately after the ex and I separated she left our family to stay with the ex, but was always remembered and still a part of the family in our hearts. Foxy was 12months old when she joined the family back in 2002, so was still a young 6yrs old when diagnosed with her tumour... We will miss you Foxy. You were a special little girl and I am SO SO sorry that you never got to say goodbye to your fur 'sister' Ruby but I know one day you will both meet again AND play again when you are both at the Rainbow Bridge... ;)

Re the heartworm treatment being a cause of immune related diseases. I am 99% certain that this was the cause for Ruby's ITP as each time she had the vacc approx 1wk later in the initial instance she contracted ITP, then the second yr of having the vacc 1 wk later her platelets decreased enormously even tho she was on the Pred and Imuran so had to double the dosage. I now refuse to treat my dogs for fear of the vacc ailing them again.

pm Jenti1 on this one. They have had a dog with this condition. I think they have just weened the sick one off all meds, so in somewhat of remission phase. My dog had Immune mediated thrombocytapenia which affects the blood platelets so is a little diff. I know that in most cases the disease can be stabilised with Prednisone and Imuran (steroid based drugs). My Ruby also grew out of this disease after 3yrs. She is now totally med free and back to normal. Alot has been said that the cause can be from heartworm prevention meds, esp the Proheart yrly injection. Find out if the neighbour recently had the dog treated for heartworm in this way..

Um... The only way to rectify the situation is to remove the rocks. Sure your dog has its puppy teeth at the mo, but once adult teeth come thru then they are the only set of teeth he/she will have. better to spend the time removing the rocks than to have a dog at 3yrs of age with severely worn down teeth.

Here is another 'poo eating' thread I found in my search: Eating Poo With an interesting link on the last post... Worth a look?!?!

Hehehehehehehe!! Too funny!! I too had an incident with my staffy, Angus once where he ate the poo fresh out of my other dog, Ruby's anus. It didnt even get the chance to touch the ground and was still steaming!!! Funniest thing to see too. One dog in the 'kangaroo squat' position and the other looking like it was eating the contents of a 'mr whippy' ice cream tap!!! I am SURE someone on DOL suggested an indeficiency in this case, but in your case I would presume this wont help as it is due to the meds he is on. Will do a search nonetheless and let you know once I find it...

My dog, Ruby, has colitis and there is a thread about it that I started awhile back... I now have Ruby on Tuckertime permanently (only available through vet) as we have found out that she is allergic to beef. She only has the chicken Tuckertime, and has been fine ever since. It will be a trial and error scenario to try to source out what your dog is allergic too. We had to test her with different meat types, such as pork, lamb, beef, etc and were able to find out this way that it was beef. Link to thread is here: Canine Colitis Good luck with your dog, and keep us updated on how it goes!!!

C5 Vaccination Side Effects -

...and they laugh and shake their head at you like you are an ill-informed child that should be chastised. I know my dogs better than anyone else and wont be told that they couldnt have had a reaction. My vet (not the one that treats me with such disdain, bless his soul) advised me that a dog will not *just get sick* for no reason. There is always a reason why a dog is ill. I accept his advice. He is of the 0.5% who are precautious when it comes to vaccs. -

Agree with you Aaronwood, but the vets argue 'What reactions?!?!' without blinking an eye!! -

It is funny how many bad reactions to the C5 injection have been coming out of the woodwork of late. Here is a thread I posted a few weeks again re reaction to C5 Vacc: Coco's Reaction -
Yeah, the vet kept trying to wean her off them as he said that alot of the ITP cases in dogs on acute, but everytime we dropped the dosage, her gums would go grey and we knew that her platelets were dropping... so back on normal doses again. This happened until late last year just before she had thyroid problems she was off the meds for about 1 month and going strong. I have to say, she looks an older dog for it now!!! She is only five, but I reckon she now looks about 8yrs. It has aged her...

I dont like the HW injection. My Ruby has had side affects not just once but TWICE from the Proheart SR-12 injection. Firstly she contracted ITP (immune mediated thrombocytapenia) an auto-immune blood disorder affecting the platelets approx 2wks after the injection. She has only just gotten over this in the past year, but was on heavy steroids for 2yrs. Then last year we had her injected again and shortly afterwards (approx 2wks) she had thyroid problems and had to have half her thyroid removed. I will definitely be looking for alternatives this Sept. I dont want to risk her health again. I would be interested in the homeopathic methods...

Thanks for the Fort Dodge ProHeart links. I have just rang my vet specialist, Max Zuber in regards to this as he was quite interested in Ruby when she contracted thyroid problems (overactive thyroid), which is quite rare in dogs and was NOT cancer related. After having half her thyroid removed I have to admit that she is now a different dog. But, very interesting that just prior (say 1 month)to being diagnosed with the thyroid problem she was administered the ProHeart injection. A couple of years previous to this (2003) she was administered the Proheart injection and then contracted Immune Mediated Thrombocytapenia about 3 weeks later. Max is ringing me back today to discuss this issue so I will let you know how it goes... Cheers, Fiery Di

Does anyone know of a link in regards to Fort Dodge having to recall the Proheart Heartworm injection??? My Ruby was vaccinated with this a few yrs ago and shortly after contracted an auto-immune disease which gave her a blood disorder. My vet *thinks* that the vaccine may have *indirectly* given her this and I would like to investigate it a little further... Cheers & Thanks Fiery Di

...and you never do fully get over the loss of a dog. Hope you have wonderful memories today Teddy!!! I still remember my Holly whom I lost under tragic circumstances about ten years ago. She still even comes to me in my dreams to let me know she is okay... Cheers, Fiery Di

Sending positive *healthy* vibes Jinta's way so that she stays healthy and strong. So sorry for your loss Jintanut... At least the pup had a wonderful last few days with you.

I wouldnt be vaccinating her again, dont really think there is a need to. Here is another thread regarding Vaccs Interesting read as it states that dogs should not need to be re-vaccinated... I havent vaccinated my Ruby since just before she was 3 due to an immune disorder she has and the meds she is on render the vaccs useless. My vet advised she has enough cover from her previous vaccs to last her for her life...
