I have been looking up rabbit myself lately and have found a couple of places that stock it... http://www.homebutcher.com.au - they have wild and farmed http://www.butcherman.com.au - guessing by the price this is farmed... both deliver! -
After Some Suggestions On Meat To Feed

I thought kangaroo was one of the leanest meats around with barely any fat in the actual meat itself? Or is it the kangaroo meat that goes straight through? -

Thanks 4Paws - have used them before and they were great, but I just don't have the storage capability for that much meat... -
Where Can I Buy Meat At Wholesale Prices

Thought I'd bump this up instead of starting a new topic... just wanting to know where sydney people source most of thier meat/bones/offal from? also if anyone gets rabbit, roo bones etc from anywhere? I've found some butchers that sell game meat but they all seem to be gourmet butchers and prices are through the roof! -
I also teach my boy to 'stand' for 'check' and offer him treats when he is being examined. Obviously it's easier for my because I work in a clinic and orb comes with me every day, but he still loves running into the consult rooms and standing for his examination!!! He thinks its great fun!

Orbs has just started school and I can't recommend it enough. Not only does it teach you how to inform the basics, but it teaches them to listen to you in a situation with a lot of distractions too. Our club also holds interclub comps and does basic agility too so its great fun!

Skin Condition On A Hairy Dog
stormie replied to Wendysdarwin's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Hi Wendy, Has your vet actually diagnosed it as staph under a microscope? Could also be yeast? Or fungal? Also, the dermatologists recommend that the course of antibiotics needed to completely deal with a skin infection needs to be done at the high dose and done for atleast 3-4 weeks continously. 7-10 days just isn't enough these days. Something has occurred to break the natural skin barriers and let the bad bacteria multiply and take over. Pyohex shampoo is great for treating staph infections and malaseb is for yeast. Sounds like you need a long strong dose of antibiotics to deal with the infection. It is possible that it hasn't resolved from the first time and just keeps recurring. ETA: Orbit suffers from itchy skin which sees him with constant staph and yeast infections from his scratching damaging his skin barriers, and thus makes his itchings worse. After the recent seminar with the dermatologists, we've started him on a higher dose and his skin has never looked better with not a pustule in sight... -
I am not sure I can post it here :D I got it from www.k9katzkitchen.com.au (they are the distributor) I ordered the lg puppy today too! Orbit gets terrible gas from his food and also has the skin itchies, so am interested to see if we see any improvement on this food!

Maybe try and reinforce a calm behaviour during these times of high excitement? I have seen plenty of dogs where this became a habit and they never grew out of it and continued to do it well into their adult years...

I just discovered this was now available in Australia and was wondering if anyone had used it and what they thought of it?

Rimadyl and Metacam are both contraindicated for animals with kidney disease, liver disease and any sort of gastrointestinal illness. Older animals should have their kidney and liver functions tested prior to starting to ensure they are well enough, and should continue to be monitored throughout use of these drugs to monitor for any changes.
-
sounds a bit weird to me.. its unlikely a vet would administer injectable metacam (and 50ml???? I don't think so!) and give rimadyl to take home - the two are not meant to be combined like that. You either give metacam injectable with take home metacam, or rimadyl injectable with take home rimadyl. And it is NOT recommended that you give CPR to an animal or person for that matter, that is breathing and has a heart beat as you can cause further damage.

Emergency - Labrador Swallowed Fish Hook!
stormie replied to elsastella's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
it's done by vets! -
Happens to Orbit when his are full. His don't empty normally when he defecates like most dogs do and instead they fill up. When he's asleep, his anus relaxes which can expose the openings to his anal glands and the liquid can spill out. Very gross when it happens on my bed. I generally have to empty his glands every 4-6 weeks or so.

i'd go to a vet too... if the nail is broken it will likely need to be pulled out. I wouldn't try it yourself as nail injuries can be really painful to dogs. If they are causing problems, I too would consider having them removed.

Strong Smell Coming From Rear
stormie replied to Mum 2 Bailey n Chelsea's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
yep, i'd go with the anal glands. my pups don't empty automatically and tend to 'overflow' when they are full and you can smell it a mile off (specially when it comes out on my BED) you can sometimes feel if they are full, but might be best to have a vet show you where they are and how to feel so you don't end up being squirted in the face!! -
totally agree... don't worry about the fine needle aspirate - no point putting her through two procedures. Have the lump excised and sent away. Shouldn't take too long under GA either. We operate on dogs and cats >15yo quite often without complications. Vets are also very aware of effects of certain IV anaesthetics on greyhounds and similar built dogs like whippets, so can easily just use the gas to put her under, which also means a much faster recovery time.

Which Antihistamines Have Worked For Your Dog?
stormie replied to Mango's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I might be wrong here, but i'm pretty sure Iramine is pretty much the same as Polaramine? Iramine is chlorpheniramine, where as Polaramine is Dexchlorpheniramine and I don't think there's much difference between the two. Might be better off trying a completely different antihistamine with a totally different active ingredient... -
Am I Able To Do Agility With My Merel Great Dane?
stormie replied to greatdanes's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
The dane in Qld is Ch. Thunderfire Brilliant Csaba. Remember that a 10month old dane still has a lot of growing and developing left to do. It's best to keep things gentle with them until they have stopped growing. You can still practice tunnels and do a few small jumps here and there, but best not to do anything too hard for a growing dane pup. -
Really, the best thing for a dane pup is the commercial dry food that has been specifically formulated for growing giant puppies. A diet too low in calcium can have disastrous effects, as can a diet too high in calcium. There is much more to it, too. A great site for the great dane owner can be found HERE Hang around in the dane thread, greatdanes. Sas knows her stuff when it comes to barf - she'll have some advice for you.

I've seen it... I don't buy into those money making schemes very much There are people here on DOL who can give you much better info for free!
-
My breeder has a dane who is 12yo... she feeds a combination of dry food and raw meaty bones. I hope the recipes from that E-Book have been developed by someone with knowledge in dog nutrition.

Thanks! Not sure how we'll cope going drug free for the time necessary before the testing, but if it means having an idea of what to avoid, then its gotta be worth it (assuming its something we can stay away from!!)

hmm you raise good points, Zayda. I think we'll be heading down the path of the intradermal testing shortly - everything else has been covered!
