  1. I'm curious to hear more about this too. The main reason the animals are put under GA is to keep them still and to minimise the discomfort. The plaque often goes up to the gumline and builds up in the little crevices in the teeth, so getting to those places can be fiddly. I would imagine that even the laser technique would need the animal to be held quite still and would have to be ok with someone holding their mouth open for a long period of time to get to the plaque on the insides of all the teeth, not just the outside. I just can't imagine a process which could be done thoroughly which could be done with a dog completely awake but more than happy to have it explained!
  2. We can offer the two for $85 - thats to come in, pull blood, transport etc. If you wanted a consult with it, would work out about $110 That's a good price. I had one of my Cavs to the vet a couple of weeks ago and had blood test done for a baseline to have on record. While I was there I asked about titre testing and was told the senior vet would phone me with the info...which he did. He said I would pay for another consult fee plus the extra for taking bloods and all up it would cost me $300+ per dog ;) He said it would be sent to WA for titre testing. He then pushed vaccinating the dogs, which isn't going to happen. It's amazing the difference it makes sending directly to WA. If we used our standard every day lab, which I'm pretty sure sends the blood on to WA themselves, it would cost clients about $170 (not including a consult) for the Parvo and Distemper. But by us opening an account directly with them means we can do it at over half the price!
  3. Pennant Hills is in the Hills District - a couple of suburbs away from Hornsby. I'll update this thread when we're ready to start sending...

Pennant Hills. We only just got the ball rolling today by opening an account etc, but we expect to be able to start sending samples within the next week or so. We were thinking that maybe if we had enough people interested , we could do a titre testing day and send a whole batch off at once
  5. I'd also love a kennel name etc for Pax so I can recommend clients to her

  7. Here at our Sydney clinic, we're just about to start titre testing for Parvo and Distemper but I guess before we jump right into it, wanted to know if there are many people who are keen to do it. Because we're going to be sending blood directly to WA, we hope to be able to offer it for considerably less than I've seen people quoted before. So, are people still keen on getting titres done?
  8. Course - we should just do it out of the kindness of our hearts right (and out of our own pockets)? Yes $8+ for a small zip lock bag, one white sticker label to go in it and the very difficult task of counting tablets is a rip off. I suppose you could also count the lifting of the pen to write the dogs name, dose and time on the expensive white sticker label as well. Wish I could get paid $8+ each time I count a packet of S8 drugs at the end of each shift at work cha ching. You forgot the cost of the printer, the annual fees/subscription for running the computer software, the ISP fees for internet etc etc etc. Obviously there's just general staff wages, which as I'm sure you know for both vets and nurses is very low, but hey, we should take a pay cut so that we can help you pay for your medications. And what about the patients we see where people can't afford treatment, so we do it for 'free'? And the rescues we see for 'free' and operate on for cost price? We donate our time and skills for so many people every day. People so often bitch and complain that we should treat animals for free if owners can't afford it, because 'we should care'. And we do. But yet people like you whing about your measly $8 which helps to recoup all those costs. You expect us to pay for your medications and see rescues and wildlife for free, but you won't donate a simple $8 to help towards such things.

  10. Most of what you said comes under the consultation fee, I would think. The dispensing fee is about the drug handling - the counting of pills, printers, labels, dispensing bags. When someone comes in for a repeat dose of medication, they generally don't require to be seen unless they haven't been in for the last 6 months or so. So the dispensing fee helps to pay for the nurses time entering date, counting up pills, typing labels etc. I am surprised they write the dispensing fee down as a sep amount. Mostly its just part of the final amount. And those who complain about dispensing fees, I hope you complain at your local Pharmacy too when buying your own medications.
  11. It's up to the vets because each clinic will have different overheads. Some might put a much less mark up on their medications, but put a larger dispensing fee on. I think it's pretty crazy putting $15+ on medications. I get that the computer programs and label printers are pretty expensive (we just got quoted for a printer which is supposedly the 'most compatible' with our software, for over $2k) but I think in that instance, you just suck it up. You could hand write the labels essentially and I don't necessarily think it's fair to charge a massive dispensing fee to justify all the spiffy software and hardware. I'd rather charge people an extra $20 on top of their surgery fee and have an awesome high-tech anaesthetic monitor!! Ours varies between $6 and $9 I think it is - $6 for if you just buy a standard box, or $9 if we have to count out pills, use seperate dispensing bags etc.
  12. still haven't decided yet, though last I heard they really liked Sparks Fly. Looks like Sparky has kinda stuck as the call name though. suppose I should repay everyone with some piccies..
  13. It would depend on the actual dew claw. Some have dew claws that have no actual joint, but are just attached to the skin, so they flap around a lot more and are more prone to being hurt. Removing the ones without the joint are really simple, however taking one off that is a proper joint, is essentially an amputation. On breeds that are regularly groomed, it might be more encouraged (even if there's a joint) as they can apparently be difficult to clip around. But on a Golden, if there's a joint, I would personally leave them.
  14. Congratulations! She's a real cutie!!!
  15. 2.7kg of the EP Holistic is about $27 WHOLESALE from memory. So once you add GST and markup, about $38 sounds right...
  16. What about funny ones? Like.... "I love my Great Dane" with a photo, and then on the back "even if he is a bit different" Or, "I love my Great Dane" then on the back... "And clearly he loves me too" :D
  17. I have a desex allbefore they leave me, the only ones that leave whole are dogs in joint names. The main reason breeders desex pups at an early age (8 - 12 weeks) is that people have been known not to keep to their word, the limited register alone does not stop people ( reputable or not, reg breeder or puppy farmer) from breeding with a dog. Thats my answer anyway, others may have their own reasons. Limited register prevents ligitimate breedings that could effect the breeders bloodlines as such, but as for unpapered breedings, BYB's etc, I can't see how that effects the breeder to the point of requiring a desexing clause???. Puppy farmers will breed regardless, so perhaps breeding from quality stock instead of breeding just anything isn't so bad???. I wasn't aware that puppy farmers generally purchase papered puppies for breeding, but perhaps they do??? because each litter than is desexed prior to homing, is a litter of dogs that cannot reproduce, which otherwise may have gone on to contribute to the number of dogs in pounds etc. Also, I think most responsible breeders don't want their bloodlines associated with BYB's and puppy farmers. BYB's and dodgy Reg. breeders will cash in on the good breeders lines if they manage to obtain a dog from that kennel. And people buy it because they know that 'Awesome' kennels breed dogs, but may not have puppies available, so they go to 'Shonky' kennels who advertising their puppies as being from 'Awesome' lines. Plenty of people believe that because they have a purebred with papers that it must be worth breeding with, so they do, with no idea on what they're doing, other than making puppies, who in turn go on to make puppies and potentially living in puppy farm conditions.
  18. Toughgirl, as hard as it is, I think you need to forgive yourself for letting your friend do what he did. Living with allergies is very hard, on both the dog and the owner and maybe rather than thinking of it in a bad way, you should try to think of it that your friend gave his dog the ultimate gift by setting him free of his constant discomfort.
  19. Um Danois, a bottle of what exactly? PM me through what you want and we'll put in a bulk order yeah? So far I'm getting the pipettes, the seb shampoo and the calming spray.
  20. Under 15kg we're $301.65, over is $311.75. Prices include everything. But obviously we're a bit more than you've been quoted We prefer our girls to stay overing (Ian lives here so they're not unattended) but if owners really want them home and know what to look for, which I'm sure you do, they can go home that night.
  21. I have pyjamas for Orbit for winter - they are great for his skin!
  22. I'm planning on ordering from here - http://www.discountpetdrugs.com/nedoprbyso.html
