  1. Can this manufacturer be named, Stormie? I didn't realise that ANY manufacturer of the vaccines had a change of protocol on vaccination frequency . I'm pleased that some have though .... that's a bit of progress, isn't it? Or am I somehow confused about this? Intervet (who make Nobivac) and now Pfizer have C3's with longer than annual registration. Pfizer have actually got an open registration on theirs, meaning the Vet can decide to make them annual, two yearly or three yearly. And the vaccine is EXACTLY the same as when it had annual reg. Virbac are still advocating annuals. They are behind the Disease Watchdog idea, which I do think is a great idea, but I do wonder if part of their plan is to 'scare' Vets, by having them able to see how close Parvo is to them and convince them to keep vacc'ing annually. Personally, we prefer to listen to the Specialists on the subject, who agree that vacc's are still important, but we need to be vacc'ing more dogs less often (ie getting those important puppy shots done) rather than the same about of dogs more often! For anyone interested, the following is a great read. It's the latest information I can find on the protocol change as issued by the WSAVA's Vacc Guideline Group. The second link, the PDF, is long but is full of information on their recommended guidelines for a whole range of circumstances, such as age, pound dogs etc... Ok firstly, here's a bit about the WSAVA's Vaccinations Guideline Group http://www.wsava.org/VGG1.htm And here's their latest guidelines from 2010 http://www.wsava.org/PDF/Misc/VaccinationGuidelines2010.pdf
  2. There's one manufacturer of vaccines that still insist on vaccinating yearly (and even claiming that the AVA has apparently realised they made a mistake with the new policy and have reviewed it ). So whilst this is still happening, those Vets who are the least bit tentative to change protocols will most likely be swayed by this and continue to want to do annuals, because they're still being told it's very necessary for the health of their patients.
  3. When you say mange, do you mean Demodex or Sarcoptes (Scabies)?
  4. This. A PCV is the most common way to diagnose HGE. If it is HGE, they really should be hospitalised and put on fluids.
  5. Just for future reference, caffeine is toxic to dogs, like chocolate is. So in the event of eating some like that, I'd probably er on the side of a vet trip for an emetic if you catch them in time.
  6. Hi Sonny, Sorry to hear about your girl. Personally I'd probably be asking for a referral to a Specialist to not only try to get to the bottom of the fever, but also make sure you're on the correct treatment. Have they looked at her joint fluid?
  7. This is mostly for when they have been on cortisone long term. If it's just been a short course like the one the OP has mentioned, there shouldn't be any harm in a sudden stop like that. I would resume from where you were up to.
  8. These happen with any form of injection, not just vaccines. They are more commonly seen with vaccines because this is the most common injection dogs receive.
  9. Orbit's penis has actually shrunk considerably since being desexed He was done at 18months of age and is now coming up to 4.
  10. According to my Emergency Med notes, a 10kg dog would have to eat 200-400g of dark chocolate to result in serious illness/death. Obviously though not all dogs follow this rule and some can be more sensitive than others. It would be too late for them to have an emetic, but if you were really worried you could insist they keep them in for obs just in case.
  11. 100,000 Brians now that the Australians are out of there. And say it takes 2 years for conditions to change, that's over 1 million that will suffer. edited cause I suck at maths
  12. Which are to do with animal cruelty and ways to fix it. So why do they only have proposals now? IF they've known about the issue for 'years', then these proposals shouldn't be current, they should have been done when the issue was first uncovered and then implemented. If they've known about it for years and only just got some proposals happening now, who's to say it's not going to take another few years for them to make changes? How many innocent animals are allowed to suffer until changes are made?
  13. Apparently the MLA has known about the treatment of these animals for years. If that's the case, why hasn't something been done sooner? There's all these talk of 'plans' the MLA have to improve thing, but where's the action been?
  14. Raz I genuinely don't understand why we need to keep sending cattle to improve the welfare? Surely we can still work with Indonesia in order to improve conditions and once standards have been raised, exporting can then resume? Wouldn't the initial ban to the 13 or so abattoirs mean that those cattle currently in the feedlots WILL be sent to the better abattoirs?
  15. Palpating the abdomen is usually one of the first things we would do. You can feel the intestines and work your way through them and often feel if there's a hard bone or something stuck. You can also often feel if the intestines themselves feel firmer Keep in mind that price was for a Giant, so a lot more of everything was needed!! I hope it's just a bug or simple upset that passes quickly for you!!
  16. The last one we did came to about $1500. That was from initial consultation until home, for a giant dog. Included consult, xrays, some in house bloods, surgery, fluids, pain relief, AB's and a couple of days in hospital. Hope it's nothing serious
  17. The Blackmores Multi Vit is marketed by PAWS - they are owned by Blackmores so you might have better luck searching for it under that name
  18. You're misinformed. Islam does not condone an animal suffering anymore than it should for food purposes, infact the Indonesian clerics have condemned the acts of the abbatoir workers who were cruel to the animals as sinful. It's Australians who are using religion to have a go at the big bad Moslems They may not condone animals suffering but it is in their religion that an animal be alive when its throat is cut...so it can be properly bled. They have been sinful for 20 years this isnt something that has just happened overnight. Did you look at the link I posted earlier? If done properly, the animal does not register as much pain as it apparently does when a bolt gun is used.
  19. RnB I just found this explanation on a website MuslimVillage.com. It's quite interesting and explains how the Halal slaughter really shouldn't see an animal feel stress at all. But another thing to consider, is that I imagine a lot of the cattle we export have been raised on massive stations with very little human contact, so I would imagine that many abattoirs would be dealing with some pretty wild animals that would be pretty stressed just with being handled?
  20. The treatment of these animals have nothing to do with religion or tradition.
  21. If he's fine, then I'd just leave him be for now. If they're still the same/worse tomorrow give your vet a call for a dose rate and/or further advice
  22. Nope that would be hives. Orbit is a pretty allergic dog so gets them from time to time when he encounters something he's allergic to. It may have been the soap, or a plant Oskar's brushed against. The line sounds like a scratch maybe? When Orbit plays with his friend, she often leaves lines down his back from her nails and the hair stays raised for a while. So I wonder if Oskar's scratched himself on a plant that was a bit irritating? With any luck they'll just go down, but they can become itchy and end up with a secondary infection due to the breakdown of the skin barrier from all the inflammation etc. Do you have any antihistamines on hand?
  23. Orbit told off one of my chickens. They share the backyard and one day Chicken got brave and decided to try and go for a bit of Orbits dinner (which was chicken ). He growled first which she ignored, then when she went in for the grab, he very swiftly pinned her to the ground with a bit of noise and let her go again. Checked her over and no injuries at all, just a bit of slobber. She keeps her distance now.
