  1. Bakari hiccups because he eats too fast!

  3. My sisters 2 labs both shake & hi 5 and quite happily sit perfectly until given the command to lift their leg to do either - I think it's all in the training. Are you going to be doing obedience with him - does him lifting his leg while sitting matter too much if you are just teaching manners/tricks????
  4. He's sooo cute! Ok crate - Maybe one of the soft ones would be better for a little dog (and seeing as he should be out of the puppy chewing stage), they would be a lot more portable than a metal one if you need to take it anywhere.... I have a metal one as I'm going to have a big dog and he's a chewing machine! You can get them on ebay http://search.ebay.com.au/soft-crate_W0QQf...QfromZR8QQfnuZ1 or just do a google search for soft crate and heaps of links & advice come up! Lifting the leg - someone mentioned the other day that they saw their boy lift his leg for the first time - and he's 11 months Not too sure about the lipstick though and the fact that he's never humped I don't think that's a bad thing - hopefully it stays that way! Hopefully someone else can give you some more ideas!
  5. We are in week 2 of our class - Week 1 - she let them free play, 3 pups at a time in a pen, pass the puppy (as described above), obedience - sit, come, stand, look (focus on owner), stopping biting & chewing hints Week 2 - testing of obedience trained last week, free play - let 3 pups off leash for them to go play with whoever if any pup still on lead got scared up onto owners lap, obedience - heel, drop, stay, toilet training hints & collar/harness discussions Next week I think is testing of the previous weeks obedience stuff and First aid - ticks, checking pulses, what's normal what's not etc Week 4 will be graduation and a bit of agility play They've given out handouts that I could fax to you if you want them or if you want to know how she taught any of the obedience stuff PM me and I'll try to describe it!
  6. Oh Sh#t - You mean I have this crap to deal with for another 8 months
  7. Thanks for that - we do want the crate door closed but have been slowly trying to get him used to it - he's going to be a show dog so has to get used to being locked in - I just didn't want him to hate it by locking him in straight away - the instructions said to do it slowly for a few minutes at a time until he gets used to it.... I'll try locking it tonight and will try the lead - I don't think he likes me watching him though as he seems to hide when doing it - I think it may have been from us picking him up and taking him outside to where we want him to go for the first few days.... Now we don't mind where he goes in the yard as long as it's not inside!
  8. Where is the very tired emoticon? Bakari is still crying a lot and we don't know if he's crying cos he's alone or crying for the toilet - when we do go out he has already toileted on the tiles and just seems to want to play? There doesn't seem to be a time frame either - poos can come before 12 or before 3am. We've been concentrating on praising him when he goes outside that we haven't been giving him the command to go so when we do get up to take him out he doesn't get why and just wants to play so we know we need to work on that. He sleeps in his crate (with the door open) in the lounge room (all other rooms blocked off) but he doesn't like being locked in his crate - he'll sleep in there fine doesn't mind the door being closed but freaks when he wants to get out and realises he can't get out/can't see us.... And will jump around bash his head, scratch & chew at the crate so much so that we think he'll hurt himself - once he's settled and we let him out he doesn't need to go either - just wants out! Normal routine is dinner 6.30pm, bed 10-10.30 (we normally have to wake him to see if he'll go but can wait more than half an hour without anything) up at 12, 3 & 6am... I took him out after every sleep, every play, every drink yesterday but he didn't pee for nearly 4 hours! He's getting better during the day and will generally go outside as we leave the door open for him but nights are the issue. Any help would be appreciated!
  9. I tried the paper towel thing... I've been spraying with glen 20 when he does go inside to try to get rid of the smell... He doesn't seem to show any signs - he wanders sniffing all the time then he will just look like he's sitting and then I see the puddle forming!
  10. I'd love to have him in our room but as he isn't toilet trained at all OH doesnt' want him on the carpet! Any toilet training hints? He seems to wait until he's back inside on the tiles before he'll go? If I grab him while he's going and put him outside where I want him to go I can wait 40 minutes and he wont finish! ETA Piccies - his food gets on his ears and all over his face... Then there is the look of innocence!
  11. Ok last night wasn't AS bad. Put him back in the lounge room and blocked off the other rooms - so he was in a room that he knew. Russ got up to him a couple of times after he'd been quiet for a bit to go out to wee. The 2nd time he got up he came back in laughing - Bakari couldn't hold on so had peed on the newspaper at the front of him crate and then was barking because he couldn't get back in his crate without walking through it! I had to go out this morning and apparently he was a right little shyte - he's starting to get comfortable enough that he's starting to chew - so I bought some brisket bones, chicken wings and he's got his kong so hopefully we can keep him busy with that! Thanks heaps everyone for your suggestions. And Erny - you can have him if you train him and give him back in a month or so I'm sure he'll put you off at least getting an RR puppy for a while!
  12. Thanks everyone! The tough love part is hard! I didn't think it would bother me so much! Hopefully we have a better night tonight.
  13. Thanks Poodlefan. Yes it's covered with a a big blanket. I tried the hot water bottle but he kept trying to dig at it - I thought it might be too hot so left it out and put it back in next time once it had cooled down and he still didn't like it. We did intend on having the crate in the lounge room but didn't want to freak him out about the crate by locking the door on him the first night and didn't want him running around anywhere on the lounge, dining, kitchen which is all open plan in case he got into something... We don't really have enough room for the crate in our bedroom. We thought we might try to keep him awake most of the day so I hopefully he'll be knackered tonight... Should I leave a light on? Tried leaving the tv on in the next room but that seem to make him think that someone was still awake and made it worse.
  14. We bought our little boy home yesterday... if he fell asleep on us we'd put him in his crate - he was fine with that until we wanted him to go to bed at 11.30pm - I had been closing the crate door while he was asleep then when he woke up open it and take him to the toilet (wouldn't go waited up to 20 min - would wait till he came inside then pee in front of his crate) we put the crate in the laundry and left the door open so if he did need to go then he could (planned on getting up a couple of times for toilet breaks but there doesn't seem to be a routine yet). He cried - and I don't just mean whine - screamed, jumped, cried, barked, jumped into walls you name it... Tried to do the tough love thing until 1.30 but our neighbours do shift work and he was so loud there was no doubt he would've been keeping them awake too... Russ went in and calmed him down and put him back to bed - he slept until 3 then cried again for another half hour - I went in he crawled into my lap wouldn't go in the crate until he'd fallen asleep and I put him in there then the same at 4.30am... I don't want him to hate his crate but now he's crying as soon as he can't see any of us - I don't want to get this into a habit. Help please!
  15. Maybe they think the pretty lettering will put the product in a league of it's own and be exempt from the competition
  16. You made the right decision Choppa.... Although I can't begin to imagine how hard it would have been for you. ;) Ignore those Others ;) You did the right thing by Dolce....
  17. What happened? What did I miss??? You gave her love she'd never known.... Nothing to be sorry for! RIP beautiful girl!
  18. I went and picked up toys this afternoon for my soon to be pup - a $5 rope chew toy (about 40cm long) and $27 for a Large puppy Kong...
  19. Welcome to DOL! There is heaps of info and knowledgable people on here! I think normally 8 weeks is about right. I know a couple of breeders that I spoke too when I was looking for my pup kept them until 12 weeks if they were going to be a show dog, but 8 weeks for a pet. Woohoo that was my 100th post
  20. I saw some solid rubber bone shape toys at Kmart for about $10 last weekend....? Being solid rather than hollow they might last longer than the squeaky ones? I'm picking up my puppy in a couple of weeks and was thinking about getting a Kong - but i'm not sure if I should just get him the adult one - wonder if it will be bad for puppy teeth? At least then he wouldn't grow out of it in a few months at $40!
  21. We will be using the vet that our breeder uses - Manly Road Vet Clinic at Wynnum - apparently a lot of the Ridgeback breeders in Brisbane use them so it'll be great to know that our vet knows the in's & outs of the breed (and has treated mum & dad ;) )
  22. Hey Just Interested. Here is a link to the breed sum forum Wei thread http://www.dolforums.com.au/index.php?showtopic=106104 Can we see some piccies? I think they are gorgeous dogs!
  23. Went and saw them on thursday... eyes are open and they are so adorable - breeder sent me some stacked photos at 3 weeks... well mostly stacked  We know that we are getting a boy but wont know which one until 8 weeks. This is 4 out of the 5 possibilities.
  24. Thanks Seita, do we have to register or anything?
