I'll Just Throw This Into The Mix -
The Spotted Devil replied to persephone's topic in General Dog Discussion
Sorry I think that's a ridiculous statement (in the OP) based on someone's opinion and no evidence whatsoever. It's a waste of time trying to argue it one way or another. I am so completely fed up with this point scoring. Watch unedited videos of me training my dogs and look at my results, then make you're mind up! -
Vets Report Increase In Disease Amongst Brachycephalic Dogs
The Spotted Devil replied to Redsonic's topic in In The News
My favourite breed, the Burmese, which always used to be such an elegant, athletic breed is currently being ruined by the trend for short, snub faces. It's heartbreaking. -
Congratulations again! Lovely size litter. Are you keeping something? Go on..... :D Is the Pope a Catholic? Of course I will, although I need another dog like I need a hole in the head right now. The sensible thing would be to keep the only girl, but I will leave my options open and make a decision at 7 1/2 weeks of age. So far, and yes it has been less than 24 hours, Nina has been the perfect mum Does a one legged duck swim in circles? Yes you have a bit going on for sure! My baby is in season and Zig has lost his head...all I keep thinking of is the first-born boy, how much I loved him and how pleased I am that he's in an awesome home and I don't need to deal with his hormones right now  and just for good measure my other entire girl came into season last night I'm only laughing because I've just arrived home from training my Muppet and guzzled some red wine  Seriously feel your pain - Em is due any minute, is antsy with Ginny AND resource guarding around my crazy one-eyed cat. It's a mad house I tells ya! What's your house tally now? I can't keep up! ETA: And guess what has kept me going through 6 months of injures and pain...could not have stayed sane without my "zoo."

After all, you can't lead the tinfoil hat-wearing horse to water but you can at least make sure the water is there, just in case it eventually gets thirsty enough :D Stop it Maddy you're killing me -
I can't name pups/kits until I've lived with them for a while. Even though I bred Ginny her name didn't stick for aaaages.

Uh Think It's Time For A Fb Break...
The Spotted Devil replied to *kirty*'s topic in General Dog Discussion
Save yourself the stress and turn off group notifications so that you don't see the posts and feel tempted to reply. One of my own experiences.. A woman cross-posts a post about a woman in the north west of Tasmania whose dog has just died. The dog was convulsing in her back yard late at night so she called a vet. Vet said he/she wouldn't come into the clinic without a deposit of.. (here is where my memory gets shady) either $50 or $100 dollars for an after-hours emergency. Either way, not a huge amount of money for the life of her pet. She doesn't have the money and apparently has absolutely no way at all of raising it so the dog dies in her backyard, after two hours of convulsions. And, because of course, this is all the vet's fault and not only has she contacted the RSPCA, but also the police, to see about pressing charges of animal cruelty against the vet. You couldn't make this sh*t up. So anyway, I replied with some information from the Tasmanian AWA, which included the vet's obligations and the owners. To cut a long story short, the owner, as the person responsible for the dog, was actually the one who could be charged and I pointed out (as gently as I could) that this was why it's important to have a plan in place, especially if you're on a low income. The entire situation was unfortunately preventable. The collective reaction from the rest of the group.. "Omg, you're so cold" "OMG how about some sympathy for the owner" (for allowing her dog to die a slow, horrible death?) "OMG I hope your dog never gets sick" (I'd.. take it to the vet and pay for treatment? Like most people would?) "OMG Your [sic] a bitch" And so on and so forth. I was about to be upset by the responses (because I'd spent a lot of time writing a carefully considered response including references to each piece of the legislation) but then I remembered that it was people on FB, where collective intelligence decreases for every person involved in the discussion, until it has fully devolved into people calling each other names (see examples above), and at that point, can go no further. It mattered not one bit that I was correct, the people wanted to enjoy their internet outrage at the vet and when I tried to point out that the owner had to take some responsibility, that righteous fury got directed my way. At which point, I clicked the little [x] in the top right-hand corner and left it at that. As I've pointed out before, you can lead a horse to water but you can't make that horse not a complete moron. And FB is full of horses running around in tinfoil hats, calling each other names and licking the windows. QFT. for taking the time to type that out Maddy. Kirty you're a good egg. Seriously love your work. You can't save the world but you sure as heck do way more than your little bit. Block, unfollow, ignore - whatever you need to do because you do MORE than enough. -

Dogs (Vs. Bitches) Burying Food
The Spotted Devil replied to Scottsmum's topic in General Dog Discussion
My previous ACD girl buried her bones after she'd eaten them as did some of the males I grew up with - one wouldn't touch it until it had been buried for several weeks and if you walked too close to where he had buried it he would dig it up and move it when you weren't looking.. I have an entire male Dally and 2 entire female ESS and have never seen them even look like burying bones. But I mostly feed RMBs and shin bones are a big treat a few times a year when the girls are in season and hormones are rife. Like about now lol. As Em comes into her season her desire to hunt increases another notch - which is pretty wild when she's already off the Richter scale. -

It was a closed, ruptured pyometra with subsequent peritonitis as I read it? Yep - already noted. Just distracted by distracting posts. -

...maybe not for the OP, but perhaps for others. I know you like reading Willem so have a look at the forum rules. No.12 talks about respecting the OP and not railroading threads. -
My youngster is wildly active and drinks like a fish. She runs so hard I've seen her bark in frustration and exhaustion when she's lying on the pavers recovering and I won't let her chase her Mama - very crazy girl! So it's knowing what's normal for her. She had a couple of UTIs but she was squatting and straining really regularly so it was straight to the vet. I never restrict water.

Great Dane Easter Show Choice Irks Successful Breeder

Yes, this, so much this. I did my first Royal last year, we were performing five(!!) times a day! As performers we were of the understanding that we had to be benched but not showcasing our dogs to the public during in-between times as the dogs rightfully had to rest for the next performance. Still, the members of the public who insisted I pull my tired, sleeping dog out of her crate so they could take a better look, or take a photo, despite my numerous polite but firm "Sorry but no, she is resting" was shocking. I heard people complaining about the fact our dogs were sleeping. When we walked to and from rings, or out to toilet, people would grab at my dog, pull on her fur, kids would jump on her, all without asking. I had a kid run away from his parents right up behind us and smack her hard on her bum, gave us both a fright and I was so furious. The public entitlement at the Royal is like no other, it is truly an exhausting time for both dogs and humans. I've also done Dog Lovers and that was also tiring but I could rotate my dog very often and give her plenty of rest. As we were actually showcasing there I don't mind answering questions and people are also generally a bit more polite and I can make contact as they come up for pats. Slightly bummed I'll be missing Dog Lovers this year. That's quite a baptism of fire silentchild! Many of us don't even breed the dog we are showcasing either - it's simply a love of the dog and providing people with accurate information. -
Agree with Purdie - love Beagles dearly but they will escape from Alcatraz if they are looking for company. I don't think I'd have one as an only dog unless I was around a lot. My working Springers are very relaxed about being left alone but I work and train them hard - they are just happy when I leave the house so they can get some sleep :D
