  2. I am still waiting for my council to call me back re their DAB requirements. Yes, other councils want $300 plus a year, ABN, $10 million public liability and there are zoning restrictions. I am having a face to face meeting tomorrow with an advisor to an MP (parliament is sitting). I will fight tooth and nail for this.
  3. Nothing wrong with exciting rewards! If one or two steps is fine....try 3, then 5, then 2, then 7....etc etc.... :)
  4. why?...because I call a spade a spade? No not all Willem. But it's important to understand that it is more helpful to guide, encourage, educate and support rather than forcing a one size fits all approach (which you accuse others of doing). Not everyone has the patience and commitment that I do to training and competition. But if I can squeeze an extra 5-10% out of everyone I work with or meet then the welfare outcomes for the dog are exponential. And that person comes back to me seeking more education because they saw great results by making small changes. People need positive reinforcement too. If you come in too hard all you do is turn people away or they become defensive. With regards to desexing, I spend hours talking to prospective puppy buyers about why I would prefer them to wait until the pups are at least 12-18 months but they know I am the first person they can call if they have any behavioural issues. And whilst not all issues are fairly blamed on entire animals some are. Working with that takes skill and timing.
  5. Inside information is telling me that this is NOT in the spirit of the legislation. A face to face meeting is being organised between myself and an MP as soon as possible. It definitely is NOT to late to fix this so please talk/write to your local MP if you want change.
  6. Response from Dogs Victoria. They have been well and truly kept out of the loop: Dear Members, Management Committee understand that you are very anxious to know what is happening in regards to the Domestic Animals Amendment (Puppy Farms and Pet Shops) Bill 2016. These are the facts as we know them: • Currently, Dogs Victoria have been fortunate to hold Applicable Organisation status which, in brief, allows Dogs Victoria members to: 1) keep up to ten fertile females without having to register with their council as a Domestic Animal Business 2) be exempt from local government regulations that requires desexing of dogs owned in that council 3) discounted council registration fees • Dogs Victoria have been aware for several months that all Applicable Organisations are required to reapply for their Applicable Organisation Status at the end of 2016. There have been several meetings with Department of Economic Development, Jobs, Transport, and Resources (DEDJTR) where the ongoing requirements and obligations of Applicable Organisation status have been clearly explained. Dogs Victoria have formed a working group, headed by a consultant experienced in this field, to develop a submission to cover our application for renewal of the Applicable Organisation status. • On Wednesday 12th, Dogs Victoria was informed via a fact sheet (available on the DV website and Facebook page of changes to the exemptions offered under the Applicable Organisation status. This was the first DV had heard of these changes. • These changes will mean that ALL Dogs Victoria members who wish to breed a litter will be required to register their premises as a domestic animal business with their local council in the year that they breed the litter, and comply with the mandatory Code of Practice for the Operation of Breeding and Rearing Businesses 2014 (the Code). If the member does not breed a litter in any given year (April to April, to coincide with council registrations) they need not register the premises in that year. • It is important that Dogs Victoria is successful in their application to retain Applicable Organisation status to ensure that DV members are still entitled to the exemption afforded to members of an Applicable Organisation of not having to desex their dogs (even if their council requires it) and the discount on dog registration fees. • Representatives from Dogs Victoria met with Minister Pulford’s Chief of Staff Megan Berry and Dr Mariko Lauber from the Domestic Animal Unit yesterday (Friday) to discuss DV concerns and to clarify some of the proposals in the bill. • Dogs Victoria will continue to communicate with key representatives regarding this bill and represent members’ interests to the best of their ability Wayne Fleming President Dogs Victoria
  7. I thought Steve and Sheridan are talking about the bill amendment on puppy farms and the new restrictions in Victoria? I must have misunderstood, my mobile display is a bit funny on the ordering. DV is a horrible website ???? One time I wanted to know about a nearby show and they didn't put the schedule up until the day of! Ended up not going. I never know what's going on with DV or even what they're meant to be doing half the time. Especially frustrating when want to read about their media releases. Why only on Facebook? Facebook articles get lost or break all the time so hard to find older info. *annoyed sigh* a rant for another time and place sorry ???? Yes they are but the news article is referring to a PREVIOUS amendment :) But only the start of it is about the pet shop ban, the rest of it is about the other upcoming changes including the <10 breeding female restrictions that then leads into the DV statement. But also could be how the age is reordering things and the DV statement is about the pet shop plan but poorly located in the article? *mobilr correct argh Yes I do understand - but the new thing is that DV members have no exemptions. That if you own ONE fertile bitch and breed and sell puppies then you must apply for a Domestic Animal Business permit. Dogs Vic have been left out of the loop on these last changes so the statement that they approved those changes based on an article that is over 18 month old isn't accurate.

  9. Thistle that was from February 2015. This is a different and new matter.
  10. As far as I can work out, if you have more than 2 dogs or cats, then you have to apply for an animal permit and it is only then that they ask what for what purpose you own your dogs: http://www.yarraranges.vic.gov.au/Property/Pets/Keeping-Animals
  11. Not sure if you've seen this old thread: http://www.dolforums.com.au/topic/246787-is-suprelorin-100-effective/ I'd be leaning towards desexing if it's going to be hard work although he still may be keen to mate - is he due for a teeth clean by any chance? Do them at the same time...?
  12. Minister Pulford is talking about people registering as a Domestic Animal Breeder. But the proposed legislation talks about registering as a Domestic Animal Business. Seems Dogs Vic is seriously behind on this one - "seeking a meeting" is all they can offer.
  13. yes they have. Saw it earlier on their FB page. Cool - thanks Rebanne. Didn't appear in my feed!
  14. I messaged Dogs Vic and requested them to make a statement...no response as yet...
  15. Do you train or compete on live game? No - just as an aside :) I know people that shoot and Em either works the paddock or plays pick up dog. Retrieving trials are on dead game. Field trials are on rabbits but I don't compete in them.
  16. Try taking a working Spaniel on a shoot All I can say is thank goodness for all the impulse control training I've done. She blew everyone away.
  17. Premack is really about transferring value when a low-valued behaviour is followed by a high-valued behaviour. How fast a dog sits in order to be rewarded is more about variable schedules of reinforcement BUT it's very difficult to tease all this out in the midst of a training session and for practical purposes I don't. I want to see JOY in training, a continual increase in behaviours I want and a decrease in behaviours I don't. Job done :D
  18. Premack is so powerful. The Dalmatian that would always choose sniffing and peeling now loves treats and tug. The Springer that would choose a pigeon retrieve over cheese now will take whatever I offer her although she clearly has her preferences. And her daughter, who would rather RUN than do anything else, now loves to train....nailed food and half way there with tug.
  19. Poppy thought herding ducks was dumb. She lives only for sheep! Amber might like ducks judging by how she plays with magpies! It's funny how the instinct runs deep. The first time Em was faced with a duck retrieve she was a bit horrified - they are very strong smelling and are similar in that way to hares vs rabbits. However, pretty quickly she decided that ducks were second only to rabbits lol
  20. Yes, this one's been brewing for a while...didn't think it would come to pass so quickly.
