A friend of mine has a dog who used to get very scared and agitated during storms - digging at the carpet, drooling, very anxious - and she purchased a Thunder Coat for the dog. Well, after three times of wearing in during storms and it reducing the anxiety level greatly, now the dog just relaxes much more during storms even without the coat on!

At least some adults these days still see the dog's side against their own child when their child does something stupid: my step daughter's mum told my hubby that her little dog had bitten the daughter that day. She then went on to say that the dog was not told off as the little girl was actually trying to PUT THE DOG IN THE OVEN when she got bitten! She certainly learnt her lesson. There is one thing that pisses me off at shows though - show people who allow their kids to run riot, ie running fast and shouting at each other, up and down the sides of the ring while the dogs are in there. At the Canowindra show about 6 weeks back the baby puppies were in for Gen Specs and this family had their daughter swinging a large stick around outside the ring and spinning around with it and falling down dizzy every now and then! I think it's worse when it's show people who aren't stopping their kids doing this as surely they of all people should understand the effect this might have on the dogs trying to do their best in the ring!

Re Tollers and not even being listed on the results pages - that's the same with the Clumbers, but the Royal seem to only list breeds once they have results to post - rather than just displaying the list entries from the start, then updating the page once they have results. Anyway - great explanation but we are still none the wiser re the Toller and Clumber outcome!

Anyone got the Clumber results please? Even just BOB? They are not up yet on the official site.

I looked on your council's website and here is the link: http://www.canadabay.nsw.gov.au/environmen...eash_areas.html It does not say if any of the areas are fenced or not, but at least you know if your dog will come when called and is well behaved that they can go for an outing legally in one of these places. I know in North Ryde there's a fenced dog park on Blenheim Rd but that's a bit of a trek for you. Hope this helps

How To Reduce Coat Loss Due To Phantom Pregnancy?
poppop replied to poppop's topic in Breeders Community
Thanks for the replies. We actually did have her thyroid tested prior to the first mating, when we did hips and elbows, and it was in the normal range, but I think we should look at getting it done again now to make sure it is still ok. DANCINBCS - we are in the northern suburbs of Sydney. I will do a search on Chinese medine up our way - thank you for the recommendation. Did you ever breed from your girl again after using the herbs? Basically, as we plan to try again next time we can't use anything that might interfere with that. Thanks you all. -
Ok, please help! We mated my bitch last year and she did not take - but she then had a shocking (much worse than her usual) phantom pregnancy and lost about 50% of her coat - patches of baldness plus general severe thinning all over. She also did her usual hiding under tables with toys and growling at the others when they came near, and also her usual big boobs. The coat loss was the worst though, and it took 6 months to grow back to normal and look mostly ok for the ring. We recently mated her again and unfortunately again no pups. Her coat is now already falling out again, and I am worried we'll go down the same path as last time. She's a coated breed so it's a real pain. Any tips on what we can give her to help with the hormone flux that I assume causes the hair loss would be amazing, or any supplements you have used and would recommend to help. The boobs and toys thing only lasts a few weeks and we can cope with that if we have to, but it's the coat loss that is the big issue here. Any tips or advice greatly appreciated. Thank you, DOLers!

I bought those Deals Direct ones when my youngest was a pup - she's a medium-sized to large breed (30kg full grown) and while they were basically good, she managed to squirm under one panel and escape up the stairs inside (and was too scared to go back down) and weed and poohed everywhere - oh, and chewed through a fan cable which thank god was not on. The way each panel attaches to the next is by a long skwer type thing, so each panel can be lifted a few inches without moving the whole thing, hence how she escaped. After that we used cable ties to join each one so each could not be lifted separately, and also tied chunks of cement to each one to prevent her lifting them! You can imagine how attractive this all looked in our house! With a small breed my problem would not happen, and they were good panels - at a good price - overall.

If there are no medical issues and it's just a case of getting weight on, I have found the best thing is dog roll - the one you get in 3kg rolls in the pet food fridge at the supermarket. I cut it in to thick (1 inch) slices, then into 9 bits so it's in pieces. When my 30kg girl drops to 28kg I do this for her for a few days - I give probably 2-3 slices like that per meal, and she has 2 meals a day. This has given me results with a fussy eater who sometimes needs a bit more weight on her.

In my opinion - ie using my experience as a guide - I think it'd be a good idea for you to get a second dog. In our situation we had one dog who was happy most of the time, but sometimes she seemed depressed. We had all sorts of tests done at the vet, and the outcome was that she was lonely and needed a buddy as we were at work all day! We used to feel quite guilty leaving her alone all day and when we got the second dog EVERYONE was much happier. They adore each other. The other thing we found was that when they occassionaly go to kennels they are together and therefore much happier in that situation than they might have otherwise been.

Yep, have used Polaramine tablets for my 28kg dog when she had itchy, swollen eyes for a few weeks, which we were not able to find the cause of. The human dose is 2mg (one tablet) either once or twice a day. We were told to give her 6mg (!) twice a day, as the 2mg once a day that I'd been doing was not having any effect. Well I did the 6mg only once a day and it really helped her. She also was happy to just eat the tablets from my hand which made it all so easy. The thing that cracked me up was the large warning on the packet saying it can cause drowsiness at the 2mg dose for humans, but at the 6mg dose for my 28kg dog it did not even put a DENT in her usual high energy! ------------------------------ I took Honey to the vet to treat a skin allergy today. He said that over the counter antihistamines from the chemist are fine. Has anyone else used them?

Hi there I am 99.9% sure she will grow out of it. I had the same prob with my middle dog as a pup - and we travelled to shows every weekend so there was no avoiding the car. It must have been at about a year old that she stopped drooling and vomiting. What I did was to give her a supermarket own brand ginger biscuit 10 mins before travel, and when she refused to eat them (she was SO fussy!) I gave her a child's Dramamine tablet half an hour before travel. I am still not sure if it made her a bit subdued for a few hours or whether that was due to her disliking the car travel, but it certainly did not send her drowsy or to sleep. We used to put a bib on her so the clean up was easy, but really I'd say try the ginger biscuits yourself, and if no luck with them then see your vet (as the other post suggests) for the new anti travel sick medication. Good luck - it WILL stop at some point! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Hi all, I'm new to the forum and just wanted some opions and experiences from other dog owners out there. I have recently purchased a lovely Blue Heeler puppy. She's very sweet and well behaved. She does however suffer from some car sickness. I do not feed her prior to planned trips and she travels in a crate in the back of my four wheel drive so she is safe and secure. She does however vomit when I am driving through a lot of corners etc. She seems to be ok on freeways. She has just turned 9 weeks and I thought she was getting better as the vomiting had ceased somewhat but now she is starting to salivate and drool while in the car. my question is this, will she grow out fo it? I know part of their ear canal does not fully develop until a few months of age and this can affect travel sickness. Do any of you have any experiences with this you can share?

Oh my, I have 2 Clumbers and they shed twice - every day and every night, 24/7, 365. They just shed non stop. They stand on the table at the vet and it's like it is snowing. On the plus side, the vets have often commented how wonderful and relaxed they are on the table (one fell asleep while having her sore leg manipulated, and the young one fell asleep as a pup during her first vaccination!). I have no tips for minmising shedding - other than getting rid of my dogs - but given they are essentially my kids, I think I'll carry on keeping the makers of the sticky roller things in business! Cheers -------------- Hi everyone, Just curious about different dogs and shedding. I know that German Shepherds are supposed to be champion shedders, so how do their owners minimise this? When you hug them does the fur get all over you? Is the amount of hair comming out tollerable? What breed of dog do you have and how much do they shed? What are your shedding minimising tips and tricks?

I had this with my large breed pup - intermittent limps on any given leg - it seemed very random and would last a few days per leg. During the course of a month we had trigger point therapy done to her and after each session it was gone - and then permanetly gone after the third session. This must be at least a year ago now, so she has grown up and has never had another instance of the limping.

I have not stopped thinking about poor Jed and the dear dogs since yesterday, and am about to make a donation for her and the dogs who are now being looked after. Everyone on DOL has been wonderful and it is lovely to see the dog world coming together to help one of our own.

Healing Vibes Needed For My Aunty's 2 Dogs (photo Update!)
poppop replied to lovemesideways's topic in General Dog Discussion
Dear Max and Zack I feel so sad and angry at what happened to you both in the park, and the useless owner of the other dog who clearly feels no responsibility for her own, viscious dog. I hope to god the authorities find that dog. More importantly though I wish you both speedy and full recoveries for this horrible ordeal. We will be thinking of you both and wishing you well. -
Anyone Had Any Bad Experiences With This Company
poppop replied to labsrule's topic in General Dog Discussion
I had to laugh as I too had a similar experience with this company in November last year. I was impressed by their pricing so ordered food and other stuff and got an order confirmation. Then after a week I haad heard nothing so tried to email (no reply) and call (phone number no longer in use). I was really worried and then got a despatch advice, and probably a good week after that the goods arrived. At no stage did the company reply my my emails about the process and order (just got the auto order confirmation and despatch advice). You may have another 5-7 days to wait til your things arrive (now you've been told it's despatched) but I truly believe you will get your goods; it's just a stressful process and I won't be ordering from them again. -
Dry Shampoo For Dogs.
poppop replied to spoilt lab lives here's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Go to a chemist or Priceline and get a human spray on dry shampoo (they are in a can). Or if your dog is pale you can use potato flour dusted through and brushed out to freshen him up. -
Thank you all so much for your swift replies. It's lovely to have this forum to go to for advice and opinion. My girl is a Grand Ch anyway so it's not for points but more for particular judges - I just wondered as we will be showing our younger dog anyway til the pups are born, then plan to give shows a rest for 6-8 weeks to avoid risk to the pups. That means we miss the Sydney Royal - which I have already spent $82 on - but the pups are far more important than anything else. Thank you all again.

How far into a bitch's pregnancy would you keep showing her? Assuming she seems happy and up for it, what's the 'best practice' and safest thing to do? I found a thread about how soon after whelping you can show her, but what about during pregnancy?

Anyone Used Alpha Keri Oil In Dogs Bath?
poppop replied to 4 Paws's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I too was recommended it by a skin specialist and it seems to have made the dog less itchy and her coat is in better condition to the touch now. She is 30kg and I bath her weekly, and after shampooing and rinsing I mix 1-1.5 teaspoons of Alpha Keri with water in a 2 litre ice cream container and I sponge (or flannel) this all over her til it's used up. I thought I'd state her weight so you can see the small amount of AK used for a medium-sized dog. Then towel dry but try not to rub. -
