Hope this helps out...I do the cavs myself usually when they are in the bath....as it relaxes them and also softens the skin which makes it easier........yukky subject but if you keep a routine you shouldnt have any trouble.....cheers What can go wrong with anal glands? In modern-day domestic pets, anal glands can often cause health problems. Sometimes the anal gland secretions are not released naturally and build up - leading to thickening of the secretion, clogging of the duct and sometimes even infection and abscesses. You may have seen your pet with his tail up, dragging his behind across the floor. This is an attempt to relieve the pressure and discomfort of impacted anal glands and is called scooting. Scooting can cause damage to the anus and indicates that your pet is having trouble with his anal glands and needs some type of intervention. When bacteria find their way into the glands, infection can occur and lead to an abscess. Your pet may whimper or cry when attempting to defecate - this should alert you to the possibility of infection. Abscesses can also be extremely painful for your pet and will require the attention of a vet and possibly antibiotics to clear the infection. For this reason, it is best to prevent complications as much as possible. Prevention and treatment Anal glands should be regularly checked and expressed when necessary in order to empty the build up of secretions from the gland. This can be done by your vet, groomer or even by you - getting the knack of this is not difficult especially once you have been shown the technique. To express your pet’s anal glands use your fingers or a thumb and forefinger to gently apply pressure on either side of the anal opening - on the outside of the glands. Press inwards and upwards and you should see the fluid being expressed.

She also knows when I set up the Glucometer and the strips - she lays down and does this big SIGH - gets a treat - stab - hears the beep beep and looks for another treat then trots out to look for the cat...... Her routine is fantastic and I am sure if I missed the three hourly test she would drag me into kitchen and point to the equipment.....LOL

Thank you all for your replies and advice. I saw the Vet yesterday with Hope and have to do 3 hourly bloods for 12 hours for 2 days so I can get a better idea of the peaks and drops. Hope is now on 2 injections per day so I will be plotting a graph. This morning she was much more stable - yesterday she was very wobbly and her front legs just kept buckling - I cried and lay on the grass next to her while she drank. Today she walked straight out and has been ok....had her bloods/inj/breakfast.......now I am working out the start of the graph....LOL I know I can do it but have to get more coffee in for the brain to start....LOL Thanks for the site Anthony I will definately go and have a look. Cheers all

My post was a bit scattered, Hope is getting daily injections of Caninsulin 21units until Thurs when she will have another fasting blood taken, this could mean another injection per day or who knows. We have had donated a secondhand Blood glucose monitor and I have the strips ready, then she will apparently once stable be on urine tests. Also a 15kg bag of Nutro Choice Chicken and Rice dry which was recommended by Pet Supplier. i have just posted in Hope's thread about the goodies we have had donated ......here is the Link http://www.dolforums.com.au/index.php?show...3273&st=270

I can't imagine my cavs jumping up for a nail clipping......but I am going to follow the advice about touch-treat-clip-treat........Cavs should do anything for a treat......they are hungry gutted little girls......LOL Thanks for the site on nail clipping......it is very informative. regarding the dremel, I had one given to me yesterday because I am going to get all arty in the New Year ... So I turned it on near the dog and she bolted...and it is quiet....they don't mind the hairdryer so I might try them both on at once to get them used to the noise....ummmm Merry Christmas One and All

If u can get hold of an Aloe Vera plant......cut it in half....scrape the gel out and this will sooth the itch.......cant do any harm either......Keep it in the fridge as this makes it cooler......cheers
-
I have found bits and pieces of anything you can name in my dogs poos......Cavaliers eat anything that they can get their jaws around....My daughter lost a packet of chewies out of her bag the other day when visiting. Please take note that if you Dog ever eats anything that you think may be TOXIC the quickest way to get them to vomit it up is SALT.......this is for Chocolate especially around Christmas etc..... Just open their mouth and put a teaspoon of straight SALT into their mouth ....they will vomit within minutes and save u a rushed trip to the VET........cheers.
