Lime was my initial thought but that would mean you need to keep the dogs off the area for 24-48 hours. Maybe try Food Grade Diatomaceous Earth ...

Very cute ... they grow up soooo fast

I would talk to the vet about it but if he is in good health then I would have him desexed. As the male gets older you can face issues with the prostate and desexing reduces this.

I use it but tend to spread it while it is raining ... and the dogs are locked away ... so it is washed off the surface of the leaves. We have had no problems with it.

Which Is The Better Style Tracking Harness
Tilly replied to Tilly's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
These were the 3 designs recommended by his trainer ... but I can't decide which is better. Initially I liked style 2 but now I can't decide ... Our older boy would track in anything but the pup is just starting out so I wanted to find the best harness that is not going to restrict him in any way. So far style 3 seems to have the preference ... -

Charlie In Hospital - Tick Paralysis, Level 2a-b
Tilly replied to Jennt's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Jennt - try to think positive. You got Charlie to medical attention quickly and now that he is shaved you can be certain there is no more ticks. He is in the right place for the moment and he needs to rest and recover and hopefully will start to pick up in a day or two. Stay strong ... -
Charlie In Hospital - Tick Paralysis, Level 2a-b
Tilly replied to Jennt's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
My older GSD boy got a tick and it was more then a week before it was found - we think he picked up the tick on the Monday or Tuesday. He collapsed on the Friday and it wasn't until the Sunday that it was found - up until the tick was found it was believed to be related to an ear infection. By this stage his breathing was laboured, he hadn't toileted since the Friday. The poor boy was in a really bad way and the vet was sure we would loose him. He got the drugs and a mild sedative and I took him home - because leaving him at the hospital would have been too stressful for him (and for the staff). He slept for most of the day, that night and most of the next day ... and the next morning he took his first steps in days. He walked up to my brother (about 6 steps) and sat at his feet. It was another 2 weeks before he was back to normal and we babied him for another month after that just to make sure he was completely back to normal. I am sure Charlie is a fighter and won't let that little tick win. Wishing you both the very best ... and I am waiting to hear some good news in a day or two. -
I don't have any really nice photo's of my little boy but these were taken in October. I was promised he should mature to about 45kg but he will hopefully mature to around 50kg. He seems to have thankfully slowed down in his growth at the moment. I forgot to feed him him his normal breakfast one morning (but I did give him a small bone) and by the next morning he looked like he had escaped a concentration camp. Poor baby - he has a bad mummy ;)

You can buy a flea rinse (I use Fido's Free-itch Rinse in the hydrobath but there is a herbal version suitable for use with monthly treatments) and give her a bath (no need to rinse off) or maybe spray with a flea spray ... maybe check with vet if something like Frontline spray is suitable with Advocate. I hate ticks. I use Permoxin ($60 per litre) on my boys and they are drenched in the stuff every week.

My guys get whole fish (gutted and scaled) from the local fish guy - 1 or 2 a week. They love eating them frozen solid like a fishy ice block. Sardine in oil is added to their raw food once or twice a week. My guy is not quite 9 months and 42kg ... he is almost as tall as our full grown boy but not quite as long.

Appointments Or Walk-in At Vets...
Tilly replied to stormie's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
While I definately prefer appointments ... I think having some flexibility to squeeze someone in is also important (even if it is not considered "urgent"). When it came to having my rottie boy PTS I rang our regular vet in the morning and explained the situation but I couldn't get an appointment until 6pm that night. I am sorry but that was not good enough - we had made the painful decision but I couldn't sit around for the day and watch him in pain and suffering. I rang another local vet and they basically said to bring him in any time I wanted - which I really, really appreciated. Another similar situation with an elderly lady I know (same vet). Her large breed dog took a turn for the worst (terminal illness) and couldn't walk. She called the local vet (whom she had used for more then 15 years) and explained her dog had collapsed and couldn't walk and that she had no way of getting him in the car to get him the 2 blocks to the clinic. She asked if the vet could call in and give him the injection to PTS and they refused ... even though the vet drives past her place on his way too and from work. She ended up ringing a vet from a couple of suburbs away that she hadn't used since she moved 15+years ago ... he was there within 1/2 hour. I believe it is the little things that really count.... -
Maybe try washing him in some medicated shampoo like Masaleb ... if that doesn't help then I would be taking him to the vet for a check-up and looking at diet.
-
Start by taking him to the vet and get staff to ignore him completely ... just walk him into the clinic and treat and praise big time and then leave. Slowly build up to the staff giving him a treat and praise ... again leaving without anything bad happening to him. Once he is comfortable about going in to the vet maybe start working on having someone touch his paw and give a treat (again nothing bad happening) - even something like shaking paw. Just take each little step slowly until he is comfortable and doesn't just associate the vet as a place where bad things happen. I always take my young dogs to the vets on a regular basic just for attention and treats from the vet staff ... otherwise they would only go to the place for needle and nasty stuff.

Another "how's My Barf Recipe Sound?" Thread
Tilly replied to Lucy's mama's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I feed minced barf mix but also feed approximately the same amount as digestable bones. So if I feed 250grams of the BARF mix I also give approx 250 grams of chicken necks or something else they consume completely. Usually brisket bones, chicken frames, chicken necks, chicken wings, turkey necks, rabbit etc They also get recreational bones a couple of times a week - large bones which they chew on but don't eat completely. I have heard mixing raw with dry is not a real good idea as it has different digestion rates ... -
Skin Off On Paw Pad - Will This Heal By Itself?
Tilly replied to Dobeliscious's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I usually use PawPaw ointment (red tube/tub in chemist). Our pup cut his toes on the hedge trimmer and I used the cream 2 or 3 times a day. I also used a little bootie on his foot when I took him out for his walks or let him run around as this helped provide some extra protection to the foot. I was told it takes atleast 6 weeks for a foot to heal fully .... not sure how true that is but I kept the pup's boot on for that long just to be on the safe side. -
Just Found A Lump On My Gsd's Underside
Tilly replied to myboy's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
We have had a lump on our GSD removed. It was like a squishy marble size ... which turned out to be a fatty lump but it had me very worried at the time. It was removed when he went under to have stitches in his leg. Best to discuss it with your vet. -
Cover the fish tanks in cling wrap before spraying. Make sure you turn off the pumps and remove any hoses etc that may prevent a good seal into the tank. Remove any fishy items (eg pumps, food etc) from the house and make sure you air the house before starting the pumps again. We had no problems with the fish tank after setting off the bombs

Maybe try bi-carb soda instead of detergent and vinager in the rinse cycle...

Well done Daisy (and huski) ... glad she was doing so well. Some people need to make fools of themselves by making silly comments like that - it makes them feel better and helps hide their own inadequacies. Don’t give up on training in public. I often feel silly acting like an idiot in the local park trying to get my boys attention.
-
We started training last night ... and he did brilliantly. Must admit is was in the house and he is normally good in the house but it is a start

Kramar have a harness called a Roadie - I have heard good things about them but haven't tried them.

The joys of puppy pre-school ... When I attending puppy pre-school with our latest little brat I was hoping for a certificate or something like the other puppy owners ... but unfortunately my little brat didn't pass Apparently barking at strangers in the carpark next door (and his owner praising him) didn't get him a pass ... or maybe it was barking at the instructor when she came too close behind him when he wasn't looking (he was focused on the treat I had in my hand) ... or it could be because he found it difficult to sit still for an hour and just wanted to keep moving and doing something. We didn't mind that he "didn't pass" but it would have been nice to have at least a certificate to say we had attended But at least (hopefully) he will pass his security dog training and be really good at it ... he is loving the training so far :D
