  1. I have used Advantix and tick collars ... thought they were doing ok until we nearly lost our older GSD to a tick. We now use Permoxin. I mix it in a spray bottle and spray the dogs once a week - more when they are heading into an area known to have ticks. So far no problems.
  2. :p I took our youngest GSD went to visit my brother one night (he was about 14 weeks) while he was at work (security) so he was more familiar with different noises, equipment, surfaces etc. The little guy was very brave and explored everything without any hesitation ... and then he heard a noise (a cricket or something) and growled menacingly and carried on big time. We were looking for what had set him off ... only to discover the object of his attention .... was a large rock in the garden. Once we had convinced him the rock wasn't a serious danger ... he peed on it
  3. Not much longer now ... so who is going?
  4. My little boy is now "Open" ... We won't be at the next lure coursing day (25 July) as we will be at the Tailwaggers camp
  5. My boy just looks at me like "it wasn't me" even when he is caught in the act ... and when I do tell him off I get the "but you still love me" look before he does zoomies and cuddles up to me. If I am really really mad at him I do ignore him ... he he just runs off and finds something else to amuse himself with before coming back for a run-by cuddle.

    Kongs

I put a bit of peanut butter in the small end and then put small piece fish (or sardines and the juice) inside and freeze - I find the peanut butter stays in place better if it is frozen before adding liquid. Sometime I freeze with a piece of cord part way into the kong (which I use to tie the kong to the clothes line) - when the kong partly thaws it drops down as a "surprise". Mince and yoghurt or even just yoghurt frozen is a favourite of my boys.
  7. Just push the end back through - they can be a bit stiff but they can be removed - we remove ours from time to time.
  8. What has been coming out of him last night was just liquid (poor baby was crying for an urgent toilet break at about 1am) ... he has been given chicken and pumpkin yesterday and today and it is starting to be a very soft pudding. Hoping he will be back to normal tomorrow. Once he is back to normal I will give him a couple of days and then add the extra vege's ... then slowly introduce the Gold as Gold - he has brewer yeast, eggs and olive oil in his diet normally. How much potato and pumpkin should I give him?
  9. I am afraid I would be running a mile if the "breeder" wanted to hand the pup over at 6 weeks...
  10. I didn't give the youngest his dose this morning as he has the runs ... rather bad. I think it might be the rolled oats (as he doesn't tolerate dry food - I think it is the grains) so I am giving him another lot of pumpkin tonight to see if the is any better this morning.
  11. Second dose this morning ... no change yet
  12. I have been feeding my youngest just under 5kg ... and he is finally putting a little weight on (he is actually looking good now so I have cut back again). When I was feeding him 3 to 4kg he was rake thin!!! I have been giving him raw but the lamb flaps have been helping.
  13. Mmmmm ... not sure if she is cute you might need to post a few more photo's so I can decide
  14. A couple of million would be nice ....
  15. Really, and keep a dog tied up when you aren't too sure how often it is being checked / fed / watered? Another example of human stupidity What would you suggest then - let the dog off the rope so he can jump the fence and get hit by a car instead!!!! No one said the dog was being left unwatered or unfed - they just said the owners were away. There could be someone coming in to feed, water and walk the dog.
  16. Just shorten the rope by about 1/2 metre and that should stop the dog getting close enough to the fence to jump it .... thus preventing a possible disaster for the poor dog.
  17. My youngest GSD doesn't have a bed during the day ... it would end up shredded or worse. He has managed to shove the metal frame under the side gate and it took 2 guys about 20 minutes to remove it (we had to remove timber palings). He has his dirt hole and a kennel (which had carpet for about 2.5 seconds!!!!) ... but he prefers the dirt hole. At night he is in his puppy pen on his bed - thankfully he doesn't chew his bed during the night.
  18. I use Warm salty water or betadine - our vets uses an iodine wash usually
  19. I just want to be able to get the youngest boy out on to the lure coursing field without ending up bruised and battered ... in his excitement We have found the 2 person collar lift and drag method is working ... but we are still getting the bruises
  20. I brought some Good as Gold last night from a horse place at Browns Plains. I get my brewers yeast from a health shop in the city (because I work there) - I have to grab another bag of Brewers Yeast this afternoon for my boys. noisymina so did you want me to see about grab an extra bag. I also live on the southside of Brisbane Both boys were started on their mix this morning .... how long before I can hope for better dogs
  21. Wish my older boy was like that wuffles ... When our older boy was about 18 months - 2years he turned on our rottie (they had been fed seperately and I had just let the rottie out to go to the toilet but was standing between them). The GSD had finished his breakfast and without warning turned on the rottie - ripped his face open. Not long ago I was getting both GSD boys their breakfast and was sorting out some bones in the garage/freezer. Older GSD was with me and the younger one was in the backyard. The younger GSD had just had a drink and was heading to his bed (about 3 metres away) to wait for his breakfast when the older GSD turned and went for him. Normally I could seperate them verbally but this morning the older boy ignored me. I managed to grab him by the back legs and dragged him backwards off the pup (and into the puppy pen) before he could cause too serious of an injury (thankfully only some small holes in his face and bruising). Needless to say he got no breakfast for that behaviour. I have to be extremely careful about feeding my boys - they have set feeding places. The older boy has his table and the younger on is either in the puppy pen with the gate locked or in his side of the yard. I never allow the one dog near the others bowl even when they are empty. If I give the boys bones while I am at work then I need to do a complete yard sweep prior to letting them in together otherwise there could be a fight about a bone - which is why I usually only give them bones they can eat fully.
  22. I was thinking it was Maisie ... as that face looks far too sweet and innocent :D I am ready to kill both of mine... My beautiful yard is looking like a disaster zone with holes, temporary fencings etc just to protect what is left of my garden. I need to keep my dogs seperate during the day as they can fight from time to time - so they are only together while I can supervise them. For days I was coming home and finding the older dog in the same side of the yard as the younger one. I paid about $500 for a chain link fence between both side of the yard - he was either digging under it or actually pulled the chainlink fence until he ripped a hole in it. He has also destroyed the temporary chainlink fence (attempt to protect a hedge along the back fence ... and just when I thought I have finally managed to fix every hole and block every possible entry point - I come home tonight to him on the other side of the yard again. I think he is having a mid life crisis!!! Trying to be young again to show off to the younger boy... The pup is not innocent either ... he started digging a hole under a bush (I let him have it as a sleeping hole initially) ... it has now extended to under the pavers that sit under the gate area leading into his yard. It was so bad that you couldn't walk on the pavers on the left hand side because they were just sitting on a thin crust of dirt. They are now gone and the hole is over a metre deep - his trench is now heading under the garden edging towards what is left of my lawn. Filling it in previously has just been a waste of time. I am now going to have to buy about 2 or 3 cubic metres of dirt to fill this one hole (don't know where all the dirt has gone) and another load of large rocks to stop him from digging in that area again.
  23. My two boys have the same issue. My older boy is food aggressive around our youngest. We have known that from when he was a pup and despite trying a number of things it just hasn't worked. I never put our boys in the situation where they could fight over food - making sure they are fed in seperate areas. Even when they go to bed at night (older dog on the veranda on his bed beside the pup in his pen) I have to hang a sheet between the boys while they eat their bones otherwise the older boy will try to intimidate the younger one even though he can't get to his food. It is definately safer and easier to feed them seperate in their crates or in seperate rooms - this way food won't be allowed to spoil a otherwise wonderful relationship.
  24. Wishing you all the best Jed - it is going to be a long and slow process so be sure to take the time to live each day to the fullest and try not to do too much to soon ... no matter how frustrating it may feel. It is wonderful to hear you are improving and making great progress. I really can't believe some people didn't wish you well ... because I could never wish upon my worse enermy what you have been through.
