Kaine is a GSD so he was competing for the Shanett Trophy ... I was shocked to find out he did so well as really he is still rather young. I don't really understand the whole "Lure Coursing" thing - we just go because it is something for him to do and he seems to enjoy it so much. He would probably do a lot better if he didn't waste so much energy just getting out to the course :D

Some days I am gone 12 to 14 hours but what time I do spend at home ... I spend with my boys. They have each other for company when I am away, get walked twice a day and playtime with me most days ... and they are always so excited to see me when I do finally get home.

My youngest absolutely loves his Turbo Chook and Home Alone (and me) ... the older boy loves squeaky toys or food

I think I read somewhere online that dogs need at least 2 hours of sunlight a day for Vit D ... Found a linky ...

The little brat is called lots of things (most can't be repeated in public) ... but he is also called "Kaine". :D I did go a ask what his score was (just out of curiosity) ... and he came in second place. pixie_meg - "so intense" ... is a nice way to describe his nutty behaviour

My little brat had 2 excellent runs. He was in fine form with the vet (OMG the carry one!!!!) and then the carry one reached new heights on the way to the course. Thankfully all the staff understand his behaviour and left it to the last minute to call us to the gate ... so the crying and vocalising was kept to a minimum (didn't want to scare off any first timers ). During the vet checks his heartrate was 160 during his initial check and reached 194 after his second run!!!!

Paw Pad Conditioning For Roadwork?
Tilly replied to Staranais's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
When our boys started working security the first couple of shifts of walking on concrete and roads often saw them have "sore paw". With our last working dog - when we started him at work we rubbed PaPaw Ointment on the pads (morning and night) and this really helped him. -
My little brat got his invitation ... and I have entered him. Not sure how he will go as he is used to a big rest in between races but hopefully it will tire him out Hopefully I can get his "vet check" done well away from the gate otherwise they will think he is having a mental breakdown ...

How big/strong is the dog? I had to fix the eaves of my house after I screwed a hook to hang the Turbo Chook under the eaves ... and I am going to need to replace my clothes line which is only just staying upright - some of the arms had to be re-attached and are seriously bent ... just can't wait for the little brat to grow up.

I have used Preventic and Killtix on my older boy - and still ended up with a tick .... even one under the collar. I was replacing them every 3 to 4 weeks (I think they are supposed to last 3 months) and it made no difference. We were using Advantix when the ticks were bad and washing the dogs in Fido's Fre-Itch Rinse in the hydrobath (this only offers 3 days of tick protection). Neither worked as we nearly lost our older boy to a tick .... thankfully I had taken him to another vet as this was when we found the tick (regular vet said he had an inner ear infection). After this I did some research, asked around and discovered "Permoxin" ... it is $60 - $100 per litre but we mix in a spray bottle and drench the dogs in the stuff. Normally they get sprayed weekly but if I know they are going into a tick area I usually spray them before we go and then do them again once we are home ... I use a cloth (spray onto cloth rather them on the face) to wipe around their face. So far so good ... but every treatment still recommends you do regular checks ... particularly around face ... especially the eyes, mouth, and the ears.

Not Sure Whether To Persevere With Obedience Classes
Tilly replied to aussielover's topic in Puppy Chat
Is is possible to move further away from the others when you are not working. My youngest was rather reactive around other dogs when he first started so most of the class we were quite a distance away ... over time we slowly moved closer until eventually we could join in. When he carried on I just walked him away and got him to sit (with his back to the distraction) waited for him to calm down and then moved back. He soon learnt that if he wanted to get closer to the dogs he needed to be calm. -
My boys love their whole fish ... heads and all

I had never had much to do with crate training until I got my last pup ... and I think they are fantastic. My youngest will happily stay in his crate for most of the day and doesn't fuss - he just lays down and relaxes. It was great when he had a foot injury and needed to be restricted until the paw healed. I can even take him camping and know he isn't going to be stressed when he needs to be confined. Our older boy (who isn't crate trained) was a nightmare when he had an extended stay in hospital - he hated being confined and became more and more frustrated and aggressive. I did find it interested on "me or the dog" the other day that they didn't recommend the crate as it was "boring and cruel" to confine the dog. Previously that would have been my view but aftering having a lovely crate trained dog - they are wonderful As far as the food - you should feed what your dog does best on. I have previously fed dry food but found our dogs now do so much better on raw. Other dogs do well on one brand of food but not so good on another - only you can make that decision.

When my older boys was in the ICU ward I get a phone message asking me to come to the hospital immediately ... turns out my little darling was extremely cranky and broken out of his cage ... so he was locked inside the ICU ward (running loose) and none of the staff could get in to check on the other dogs in the ward ... but I was fearing the worse as I made the dash to the hospital.

If it is dry food then he is definately going to need water to get it through his system ... don't with hold his water.

Do Any German Shepherd Owners Have One Of These Beds?
Tilly replied to heroeswit's topic in General Dog Discussion
I don't have one ... my boys have the shadecloth and metal frame beds. Looking at the sizes ... my boys would need the XXL -
I have alway left my guys with water - it didn't make toilet training any more difficult.

From the moment I arrived at the airport to collect my youngest I started to think what was I getting myself into. I could hear his whining from the vehicle moment he arrived on the back of the trolley thing ... there was no way he was going to be overlooked or forgotten. Then to open the crate and find a very smelly puppy and not the little cute thing I was expecting. Then there the was constant crying all the way home as we stuck our heads out the window to get gulps of fresh air to stop ourselves from vomiting from the smell. He was rushed into a nice warm hydro bath at 11pm at night before being bundled up into towels and taken inside ... all the while crying which was upsetting our older dog who was carrying on big time trying to find out what was going on (we were not prepared to introduce them at that time of night). He then cried almost constantly that night and would only sleep when I was laying beside his crate with my fingers through the bars ... I think it was almost 3 days before I would sleep more then an hour at a time. Then the runs started ... If his breeder had been closer I would probably have taken him back within 24 hours!!! It wasn’t that we weren’t prepared or knew what to expect with a pup … but I had just never had such a vocal dog I wouldn’t swap him for a moment now … ok maybe I would think about it for a moment

When my older boy was at the emergency hospital / specialist for an extended stay - a couple times he was sent home for weekend visits because he was getting extremely aggressive towards the hospital staff (he was fed up with being confined and medicated). One afternoon when I was taking him home but had to wait in the sitting area to be given his medication before going home ... there was couple with their little fluffy on a long line and they just let it wander all over the place. My boy was muzzled and extremely cranky (he was clearly unhappy about having the unknown dog near him) so I got up twice and moved further away before I finally lost it and told them to get their dog away from us ... and then I had to ask them to move their dog away from the entrance so I could actually leave. Their dog was "friendly" so they just couldn't see why it was a problem ... With our local vets it usually isn't too much of an issue as the staff tend to give us quiet times when there isn't many dogs around. I had taken our rottie (gone 3 years now ) for an eye injury and it took myself and 2 people to hold him still so the vet could look at his eye (he needed to see if the eye itself was scratched or just the outside of the eye). Even though he was muzzled, one person left a dent in the consult room when the rottie gave them a muzzle hit. This poor old boy hated the vets and hated anyone touching him that wasn't his immediate family. When we came out of the consult room the previously full waiting room was completely empty - everyone had gone outside as they thought he was going to come charging through the door any moment.
