  1. I have been spraying my lawn with Bin-Die to get rid of the weeds. Normally I keep the dogs off the lawn until it is dry and then supervise them for the next 3 or 4 days (they are grazers). We are lucky to be able to restrict the dogs from the lawn as we have fenced the backyard to break it into 2 areas ... specifically for this reason. Can you put up a temporary fence and restrict access to the sprayed area for a couple of days?
  2. I brought similar barriers ... and found them a complete waste of money. I just couldn't get it tight enough that it couldn't be pushed out of place. I was looking at Walky Barrier which secures onto the .headrest
  3. I have used Advantix and Permoxin together on our GSD with no issues ... personally I prefer to drench him in the permoxin and save my money on the Advantix. We nearly lost him with a tick and he was on Advantix and using a tick collar at the time ... made no difference.
  4. My guys poop is normally a well formed consistency ... if the older boy get too much bone then his poo goes hard and crumbly. He needs a higher meat content so he is getting about 60 to 70% meat/veges etc and only about 30 to 40% in bone. I found my guys normal poo is darker on the red meats; lighter on white and a yellowy colour on turkey.
  5. We put a tarp over the top of the clothes line to create some shade when we put the pup out that side of the yard. The grass eventually died so we replaced it with a piece of shadecloth ... but he still had a kennel to protect him from the rain and wind.
  6. I am looking for a dominant dog collar for my GSD ... but don't want to buy from overseas. I would prefer some place in Brisbane were I can double check the fitting before I buy ... Can anyone help?
  7. When my brat sliced his foot - I used a bootie when walking him in public etc so he didn't pick up any nasty infections.
  8. Mine don't even get off their beds when I go outside ... unless I have food in my hands or I look like I am heading into the garage where the food is kept!!!!
  9. I would be reporting the find to police ... maybe they could analyse the bait so they know what is being used and maybe help someone else later down the track. Hope they catch those responsible.
  10. We have 2 GSD's who are both a little crazy ... the older one has driven me crazy for almost 8 years and then ... just for fun we added another working line GSD pup just as the older one started to settle. After a fair bit of landscaping and redecorating over the last couple of weeks (mainly by the youngest) I was glad when the older dog came out of retirement and returned to work. So this weekend I have had only 1 dog at home ... which I thought would be fantastic to spend one on one time with the youngest to work on some of his training ... but with the miserable weather I didn't get to spend as much time with him as I would have like. But I have noticed since the other dog isn't at home ... the youngest has been an absolute perfect angel!!! He hasn't been landscaping or redecorating ... in fact when I am not outside with him he is asleep on his bed. The neighbours were worried he was sick or something because they often sit on their back veranda and watch him amusing himself during the day - that way I get a report on who destroyed what in the backyard. So now I am convinced the older dog is setting the younger one up ... maybe he is hoping if one dog ever has to go it would be the little "trouble maker"
  11. I used Betadine on my boy when he cut his paw ... also I put a bootie on his sore paw when I was walking him in public as I didn't want to pick up any nasties and it provided a bit of extra protection.
  12. I have a first aid kit for each dog and it basically remains with the dog ... so if I have 2 dogs then I have 2 FA kits. I brought a animal first aid book and then went through it looking and what types of injuries my dogs could get and then made sure it contains everything I would need to treat that injury. I looked at things like snake bite, cut/stab/shot, hit by car, poisoning, broken bones etc - and then made sure there was sufficient supplies to treat these injuries (they are working dogs). Apart from the regular bandages etc it also contains doggy pooh bags, tick removers and advantix. I have the FA book put out by Animal Emergency Centre (written by Carole Harvey-Stevenson) called "The Animal Emergency Centre of Brisbane, Guide to First Aid for your Pet". I brought mine from our local vet but I have seen them around ...
  13. Got home to clean up the mess and discovered it wasn't just the bed cover that needed replacing ... some of the legs on the steel frame are not pointing in the right direction ... so the whole bed might need to be replaced if I can't get them straightened. The weld mesh fencing panel is bent at about 45 degrees and one of the legs on the BBQ is slightly bent ... but thankfully not too bad.
  14. Yes ... they got a walk, romp around the off-leash area and some training ... They are obviously not happy that I had spent a good hour this morning cleaning all the mud off the concrete (from all the recent rain)
  15. The moved the BBQ which had a 9kg gas bottle sitting on the base ... I have trouble moving the thing!!!! And that was the new bed cover that I brought on Saturday morning!!!! I had only been gone for 3 hours before the mess was discovered by my brother ... thankfully he is returning to security work so they will be going back to work
  16. I found another idiot on Saturday. Was out walking they dog when I came across a guy walking a young cross breed dog that looked thin and pregnant. The dog pooped and the guy went to walk off without picking it up ... so I called out to him and even offered him a bag to use ... then I noticed the poo looked like it had worms in it. I casually started up a bit of general doggy conversation when I asked what he was using for his all-wormer ... and he looked at me strangely and said he didn't. I nicely suggested he get a good all-wormer as his dog looked like he had a lot of worms (pot belly) ... and he tells me he doesn't need to do anythng because the dog was pooping them out. I have a very serious concersation and explain about the need to worm and use heart wormer ... and explain some basic general care. The guy obviously loved his dog but had absolutely no idea on how to look after it.
  17. We use Inner Health Plus (human from the chemist) probiotics - it can be used with antibiotics.
  18. We use the larger 75 - 100mm size riverstones ... they can pick them up but are too big to eat.
  19. How is he doing not? Hopefully he is going even better
  20. If you are in Queensland then you will find them here .... and yes you must be able to provide clear access to your front door (or at least some method of contacting you such as in intercom system - like for gated communities)
  21. I use Permoxin as a preventative before going bush ... and again once I am home (as I am paranoid). My youngest GSD is a bit sensitive and had a reaction to a spray (can't remember the name of the top of my head) I had put on him to repel flies from his ears - he has had absolutely no reaction to Permoxin. My borther had sprayed our older boy with the Permoxin and used his hand to rub over the dog etc while he was spraying it (so we could sure the dog was well covered in the spray) - my brother did get a bit of rash on his forearms (but he didn't wash his hands after application) ... but I have never had this reaction.
  22. tez - maybe look into TTouch ... this is something that doesn't need to cost any money, won't cause any harm and might be effective. When I first started looking into TTouch I thought it sounded like a load of bull - that it seriously couldn't work ... but I recently attended an intro workshop and there was some amazing changes to the behaviour of many of the dogs after only one session. It is also fantastic for creating a close bond between you and your dog.
  23. I am sure "normal" GSD's are better behaved ... my poor unfortunates are both working line so they take every opportunity to amuse themselves when left home for a minute longer then they deem necessary :D The other bed was removed to the garage last night so there wasn't a fight over the only bed left ... unfortunately for the older boy that created a problem this morning. He normally takes his breakfast back to bed ... so this morning he was left running around the yard looking for a place to eat. He kept giving me a dirty look when he came back and there was still no bed in his normal place. So I guess I am off this weekend to hunt down a new bed cover - I did have a spare but it is for the smaller bed (the one destroyed was only replaced last month).
