Thanks Lablover. It has been a real roller coaster, what with having to PTS our 9mo pup July '04 due to severe genetic problems, losing Mum Nov '03 and my old Collie April'03 it has been a nightmare to say the least. At least our 8mo pup is fighting fit and eating us out of house and home . -

Update 20.6.05- Spoke with Maggie's Specialist this morning over the severe attack of diarrhoea at the weekend. he suspects the Z/d was the culprit and that Maggie is super allergic to Chicken) Z/d is chicken based ). He has suggested we try the Eukanuba FP(FishNPotato) and see how that goes. Our Vet had to order it but should be there Tuesday, tomorrw. so for today it is back to turkey mince and potato. If the FP doesn't work then we have to try the Hills Prescription Turkey and Rice. Geez if that one does not work then I give up. -

Maggie had a set back overnight. She had severe diarrhoea, real thin, brown watery muck. rung my Vet at 12midnight who met me at the Clinic. Maggie had a temp. of 40 degrees and was very distressed. Vet gave her scourban and kept her in for observation. He was concerned too. Maggie came home around 3pm this arvo. He is like me, at a loss as to why this happened. She had lectade in her water at vet's and an antibiotic injection and he will see her again tomorrow morning. This had to happen today, the young 7mo pup had a very big show 2hrs drive away so only had about 2hrs sleep. I just hope and pray Maggie's IBD issue resolves very soon or I will be in the looney bin. Apart from Dad, she is the last link I have to my deceased Mum. Please everyone, help me pray that Maggie recovers asap. -

With the form of Inflammatory Bowel Disease( much different to IBS) that my girl has she didn't have cow-pat stools, hers were well formed. it was just this really bad gurgling tummy and severe weight loss of 8kgs. A qualified Naturopath that I have known for ages that also shows dogs Agreed with me to stick with Vet Advice, and he has known this dog since she was 14wks. -

Sorry Trifecta, i do not beleive in all that stuff. IBD is not a food allergy, it is an inflammation of the bowel and gut. My Vet and I suspect we know what caused it but I am not prepared to go into all that. My girl is alot happier today now that she has "real food" in her tummy. Bega is a bloody long way from where I am. I only use Qualified Practitioners on my animals, same as for me.My Vet in Qualified in Bowen Therapy and has a Masters Degree in that and veterinary chiropractics and she does Not think it will help. She is a Senior Lecturer in this field at Melb Uni /RMIT so I think she knows ehat she is talking about it Edited for spelling errors -
How To Reduce Scaring, Creams Etc ?
InspectorRex replied to Maverick's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
when the stitches are out the Calendula cream will encourage the hair to grow back. My Collie was bitten on her"stop" by a wasp 2 wks before a big show and witht the use of Calendula cream she had hair in that area by the time the sow day came. I swear by it. -

Update 14.6.2005: Spoke to the Specialist today. He agreed that Maggie could go on to Hill's Ultra Z/d and back on 5mg prednisolone daily for 2 weeks whilst changing over from the Turkey and Potato. he also said the Eukksnuba FP was ok. As my vet has the Z/d in stock and we have used it before we have chosen that. Gave Maggie some Z/d and she smiled as if to say" real food, yummy!" If all goes well within the next 2wks then specialist will put her on 5mg pred every other day. Thanks Rappie etc for your input, much appreciated. the food bill should be a lot less now and I won't get so exhausted from cooking 8kgs potato and 3kgs turkey every 4th day! -
How To Reduce Scaring, Creams Etc ?
InspectorRex replied to Maverick's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I have always used Calendula Cream ( from the health food shop) for any wounds on both the dogs and ourselves with great success. and the good thing about it is that becuase it is all natural it will not harm the dog if it licks it. Trick- out the cream on just as you are about to feed the dog then it has at least 10minutes to absorb into the skin -

Castlemaine out of the qusetion as I am in Gippsland, would be about a 5hr drive each way.Bad enough going to the specialist in melbourne, 2 hr drive in way. Not fun with a sick dog. Holly, I will speck to the Specialist about the products you have mentioned. At present she is esting me out of house and home and I am only on a Carer Pension and her food bill is 1/2 my fortnightly pension! She hasn't had diarrhoea for many months but her poos were bright yellow, yukky subject I know. The colour now is a bit more "normal" brown but the day she didn't have her cortisone she had some yellow ones again. I am exhausted, this battle has been going on for many months. -

Thanks Rappie, will be ringing the Specialist forst thing Tuesday ( Monday is a P/H here) to ask about the foods you have mentioned. I don't mind feeding here the turkey and rice but it it not satisfying her hunger. Right now she is sitting beside me wanting more food and she has already had her dinner tonight plus 2 other plates full! -

She has been on Metronidazole as pulse therpay and also Hills I/D bboth dry and wet but still got the grugling tummy. we live in Country Vic so hard enough to even get the Turkey mince let alone duck. I am at a real loss. -
My Collie was diagnosed( after endoscopy and biopsy) with Inflammatory Bowel Disease. Her tummy would gurgle after she had eaten and at several times throughout the day and she would be haunched over. after many symtomatic treatmens she was referred to Specialist who did all the tests. Once correcttly diagnosed she was put od cortisone- first 20mg daily for two weeks, then 10mg daily for 2 weeks, then 5,g daily for 2 weeks and now she has gone to 5mg daily every second day. The only food she is permitted to have is boiled turkey mince( reason-not in commercial dog foods) and boiled potato. A very expensive diet costing me about $80pw to feed her. My questions are: has anyone had a dog officially been diagnosed with IBD; how long did it take for the the dog to be able to eat normally again, if ever? My girl will be 8yo this August. since she has been on the every 2nd day dose, the day she is not on cortisone she seems depressed and wants to go poos a lot. I am doing the right thing prolonging this? I am at my wit's end. This has come on top of nursing, then losing my Mum to terminal Cancer and then having to PTS a 9mo puppy with severe health issues.

Yes and the dogs behave so well for "Aunty Kate" when she does their nails, LOL not like they behave for their Mum. Good luck to all of you going to the Collie Champ- bring home the bacon guys Colleen

2 years today our beloved Rough Collie "Brodie" aka Nauglamir Seabrooke CDX left us for the Rainbow Bridge at age 14yrs. He was a fit and healthy boy whose sudden passing was brought on by a cruel act of a local teenager . Brodie, the Police and RSPCA, are still fighting for Justice for you so that your death was not in vain. You were my best worker in obedience, you just loved the dumbbell. Nanna is now there with you and you can go and give her one of your famous hugs. My sable "son" now working trials at the Rainbow Bridge. Love Mum( Colleen ), Poppy and your tri girl " Maggie" XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

I agree with ML, wouldn't use it. what breed do you have? if Brodie is a Collie or Collie-type breed such as Sheltie, Aus Shepherd etc avoid it at all costs as it has a related drug to ivermectin which can be fatal if given to these breeds. go to pricelesspets.com and you will but Sentinel Spectrum ( which does all worms. heartwom and flea control) for heaps cheaper than anywhere else

From another Collie lover point of view, here is how I like to train; Have your dog ready for Novice before you enter Encouragement: once you have achieved that then start introducing things such as dumbbells and jumps. That way when you have acheived CD title it won't be long before you can compete in Open. Dogs get bored very easily and need different stimuli to keep them happy. The best time to teach your dog the Articles for UD and dumbbells is when the puppy is teething as the metal articles soothes the sore gums and they accept it easier. Tess you are doing superb with Reilly, give yourself a huge pat on the back

Allergy testing is not painful for the dog. The Dermatologist gives the dog a light sedative then pin pricks the skin with allergens to see if any reaction. It is called Intradermal skin testing. Need to speak to your Vet. I agree with the others , the "hamburger" thing could create more problems. What state are you in?
-
Ask your Vet about Atopy/Atopic Dermatitis- sounds very much like it to me. Do a google search and read up on it. I have had first hand experience with a dog with it.

How time flies. I remember when Lassie passed away Lynne, she is up there looking after our Fergie Baby Lady( sable 9mth old Collie, passed away 7/04)

I agree with Scales to have your Vet check this out with faecal analysis as it maybe clostridial endospores or some othe sinister thing. I would not muck around with guesswork here
