Could Any Of These Cause An Allergic Reaction?
InspectorRex replied to BaaabyFlynn's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Have you had a Vet check him to see he hasn't got a foreign(sp?) body such as a grass seed stuck in one of his nostrils? This can cause what you are describing. That is what I would be doing first and foremost. Also it is hayfever season and yes dogs do suffer from hayfever etc and your Vet can prescribe an Anti-histamine like Polaramine which is quite safe for most dogs -
Lynn Leach Herding Clinic

Bummer! (only 45 mins from here )This I would love to attend(PreTrial) but I will have only just come out of hospital after surgery about 10 days prior. Hope all goes well for those that get to go -
Hi Kris A lot of us Aussie Collie owners are already DNA testing our dogs for the Mutant MDR1 gene. I have and mine are Affected. My Vets are very knowledgeable on this topic as I have bomarded them with mountains of information which they keep on their Clinic file. Note if your dog is either Affected or Carrier for Ivermectin Sensitivity they should also not be given non-steriodal anti-inflammatory drugs such as Rimadyl and Metacam. Intersting to note that Akitas, GSD's, Sighthounds also has the MDR1 mutant gene issue but not many in these breeds know about it. another useful site is www.dogsadversereactions.com

Has your dog been allergy tested by a Vet Dermatologist? Then you might be able to overcome the problem with allergy vaccines. Melb Vet Referral Centre do the testing

Getting Mack Into The Car
InspectorRex replied to macksowner's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
If you find an answer let me know. My girls loathe the car but once at the destination they are fine( I had been ill for most of this year so they have not been in the car much) -
why not try using Dog booties? My friend is USA does this for her Cocker Spaniel who has the same problem- everytime the dog goes outside on go the booties. Far safer than any sprays. Do you have wndering jew in your garden as this is a common cause of problems like these?

I know Southern very well. Always ask for permission- most clubs will allow you to do it and some may even offer a person to run you through. Also at the Club you train at do you have "ring run-throughs" so you can get more practice? Club Comps are good for this too.
-
Thanks Helen- it was the best advice I was ever given
-
Glorybea- I learnt this many years ago from a very well respected Judge and when I did it it works- If your dog mucks up an exercise at a Trial, wait till the rings are finished and before they are pulled down go back into a ring with someone to call you through the exercise. I will back it in that your dog will do the exercise correctly and make such a fuss of your dog; reasoning your dog has now associated the "ring" with a positive experience. When I was Judging trials I used to actually take the time after Judging to help ppl with this and it pays dividends. For me , my Brodie in Open Class would Stand at the post for Drop On Recall. We did the above only once and the very next trial he got his first Open pass, drop on recall 29/30 and 2nd in the Ring, then he gained his other 2 passes at the next two trials( all in just five weeks) Just let one of the officials know what you are doing so you don't get told off

you can buy Peptosyl from Pet Network( advertise on DOL) but make sure the dogs are vet checked for anything nasty first

There a two very good trainers in the area( I have trained with both) You have Aldyth Adams at Devon Meadows( who is a full panel obedience Judge) and you have Lea Cogley at Hampton Park who also does Thursday nights at KCC Park. I can recommend either of these very talented ladies -
