Guiness Is Gone To The Bridge
InspectorRex replied to dogbesotted's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
DBS, my thoughts are with you at this very sad time. Taken well before his time- Run free at the Bridge Guinness. -
I agree with other posters. Contact a few Pug Breeders( I can give you the details of one here in Vic who is reputable and sometimes does have dogs to find forever homes) who may have a "pet" puppy for sale, that way you know what Mum and Dad are like and will usually have full back up support. Personally I would not take on another "rescue" given your past experiences Unless you have seen how the dog reacts in all situations etc. A dog is for Life so the choice you make means that the dog should be a family member for many years and not to be rehomed again because things did not work out. If a dog comes into this household it stays whether or not it makes the grade in the show ring etc or illness takes it from us.

I agree Ceildh and not everyone has a computer, especially the older exhibitors. Once a decision is made is should stay. At 9am this morning in Cranbourne it was already 30 degrees and it is getting hotter all the time so I personally think they should have left it at 7.30am start, Have to congratulate my dearest friend Katrina Staniland on getting DCC and RUBOb with her Intermediate Collie Rough "Guinness" aka Kinrina National Velvet . Guiness has been quite ill recently so this was an achievement . He is a beautiful tricolour Lad. His litter was hand raised after the dam had to be PTS when the litter was only 4 days old after massive complications with her whelping.

at 5.30pm the Cranbourne weather site today(Friday) was showing 36.6 degrees. Glad I am not going tonight- too hot!!!!
-
I was reading from a link the CFA have.
-
Bureau forecast at 5.30pm for Saturday is still 38 degrees. Local CFA have predicted it may get even hotter in the area as neighbour's brother is in CFA here.

Awesome win LMWS May there be many more to come

A Vic breeder of Keeshonds makes and sells these(great quality) and would be much cheaper than buying from overseas. If anyone wants details please feel free to PM me.

Desexing An Older Dog - Risks?
InspectorRex replied to mr.mister's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I had my boy desexed at age 10.5 years ago and he had no issues. My Vet at the time used the anaesthetic they use on prem human babies and also did the pre blood tests and gave IV fluids. He was over 14yrs when he went to God. -
If you do have the endoscope done at least you will know for sure whether or not you are dealing with IBS or IBD- two totally different conditions. My girl bounced back well from the endoscope but she was severely affected with the IBD and we could no longer so her suffer. She would eat her food and get weak in the legs and then you could hear her tummy gurgle away and you knew what was going to happen next. She was my Heart Dog so it was very sad to see her so ill.
-
Stitch, has your Vet even mentioned referring you to an Internal Medicine Vet? I ask this as there is Irritable Bowel Syndrome and there is Inflammatory Bowel Disease- this one can be only diagnosed by endoscope. My late Ch Bitch, Maggie( Rough Collie), had IBD diagnosed by Endoscope performed by an internal medicine specialist. She never got the anal gland issues that your are having. I had to feed her on boiled turkey mince and mashed potato and she was put on a small course of prednisolone. We also tried I/d and the other prescription diets and even tried complimentary medicine. For Maggie her case was severe and nothing was working and we had to give her her winga at age 7.5 years. I myself have IBD so I know exactly how your furkid feels. With me my food range is very limited. A lot of it is trial and error. if it were me I would be asking for a referral to an internal medicine specialist to see your furkid. Please keep us up to date and paws and fingers crossed here .

Kidney Disease & Fussy Eaters
InspectorRex replied to greytpets's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Sheridan, where did you hear about Hills Z/d Ultra has run out in the US? My girls are on it for a few more months and they absolutely love it. They have a mixture of the dry and canned and they woof it down. -
Revolution Reactions
InspectorRex replied to temperamentfirst's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
If your furkid is a Border Collie you should NOT be using Revolution UNLESS he has been DNA Tested for Ivermectin Sensitivity as it contains one of the "mectin" drugs that can be fatal to an Ivermectin Sensitive dog. I would cease using it immediately . The DNA test only costs about $60 and unless he is CLEAR( if he is Affected or Carrier DON'T use) then do not use any drugs that contain any "mectin" based or related drugs. I have Rough Collies who are DNA Tested and are Affected so I use Daily Dimmitrol tablets for heartworm prevention, frontine plus for flea control( only because we have quite a few cats in our street) and then 3mthly allwormer.. If you look at www.busteralert.org it will give you heaps of information on what drugs NOT to give your dog and what breeds are affected. Feel free to PM me for further information -
You can always PM Charles Kuntz( DOL member and Specialist Vet) and he will gladly assist you with information on the condition. It is actually noted to be inherited in several breeds too from the research I have done for my cousin who may have a dog with it.

How To Make The Righti Decision
InspectorRex replied to janiJ's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
My thoughts and prayers are with you. It is a damn hard time when our furkids get health issues. If it were me I would seek a 2nd opinion. I have ghad a 13yo male operated on to remove a lump on the face and the Vet used anaesthetic that they use on premature human babies and you would not have known that he had had a GA. He lived another 1.5 years. Send Charles Kuntz a PM( he is a specialist Vet Surgeon and get his view on this). Whatever decision you make you have given your furkid 14 loving years and they never forget that. -
healing vibes coming your girl's way

With my furkids if they get diarrhoea and it doesn't resolve within 24-36 hrs with Peptosyl( animal version of KaoMagna) then it is off to the Vets.I would rather err on the side of caution than lose of of my furkids. I always also check the capillary refill of the membranes( push your finger on the dog's gums and see if it refills quickly or whether it is a dull pink colour that doesn't refill after you take your finger off- this is an indication the dog is dehydrated). You can even telephone your Vet and get some advice over the phone. EFS

What Does This Sound Like?
InspectorRex replied to WildatHeart's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I agree with Poodlefan- x-rays and possibly and MRI. I would want a full blood panel too If this Vet won't do the x-rays then go to another. If the Valium was given by IV then the Vet must be suspecting a seizure of some sort as this drug is often used when a dog is in what they call Status Epilectus( sp?). PM Charles Kuntz( DOL er) who is a specialist Vet and see what he thinks. -
I agree with others- straight to the Vets as it should have clotted a lot quicker. I myself ahd a back molar removed about 2mths ago and within 1 hour all bleeding had stopped. Hope the furkid is okay.

Good Luck with Mandela. You will have to let us know how things go with him.

If you are willing to travel to Morwell Dr Kate Haines of LaTrobe Vet Group is qualified in accupuncture, Bowen therapy and is a Masters in Veterinary Chiropractics( she teaches the chiro students at the Vet uni's) . Also we have a mobile vet here now who worked with Dr Haines and is qualified in Vet Chiropractics. PM me if you want details. Hope Mandela soon heals for you.

Keratoconjunctivitis Sicca
InspectorRex replied to Miss Squish's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Yes I too would steer clear of Atopica- can bring the immune system down. Not allowed in this household either -
Yep I 2nd the cold tea option. The natural Tanine in the tea is very soothing for eyes and has natural healing properties. If no better by tomorrow have the Vet check it as sometimes they can get grit etc in the eye which can then scratch the cornea and the eye then becomes infalmmed

Keratoconjunctivitis Sicca
InspectorRex replied to Miss Squish's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I had a dog with this many years ago and the thing that worked the best and actually cleared the problem was to make up a pot of tea, cool in fridge and then dip some cotton wool in the tea and bath the eye twice a day with it( this was a suggestion from our Vet). The natuyral Tanine that is in tea is very beneficial to the health of eyes. She was on Optiimmune but yes it is very expensive so Vet suggested the above and within 2-3 weeks her eyes were "normal" again and then I just did a "maintenance" of bathing her eyes in the cool tea every other day and the problem never reoccured. I always keep tea in the cupboard now for the "just in case" situations but is it always important to have a Vet examine the eye/s first for foreign bodies, scratches etc.
