  1. Thanks Stormie. You are very knowledgeable I have still not had a reply back from Dr Salter , he is very busy, but I am thinking the procedure used by the Vet in QLD is maybe not considered safe and thorough?? Will let you know if I hear anything.
  2. Thanks Anne. That was exactly trying to type but it didn't come out right-sorry. Sighthounds are on my list from Washington University in USA so that is why I included them. It might be only in USA there are affected dogs??
  3. Yes know all about Thiopentone as an !@@! Vet used it on my Ch bitch in 2005 and caused a skin slough and forgot to advise me of this and it burnt 4inches of her skin She could not even weight bear on her front leg and I had to carry her in and out to the toilet She had to have daily change of Jelonet and the like(like for human burns) and she had complications from this and died from osteomylitis, only aged 7.5 years. ( The head of the Vet practice was furious and the practice bore all the Vet costs and the vet at fault was given marching orders, as he said even a Vet Student would have known the Thio had sloughed and immeditely flushed the skin thoroughly) Is Isoflurane an IV GA or gaseous GA?
  4. me too JulesP. The bitches own health could be at risk and if anything happens to her Bonduca will be devastated and also left to hand rear pups which is damn hard.
  5. Thanks Cordelia for the name of the GA that greyhounds etc use. Luckily my girls teeth are hand scaled on a regular basis but at least I now know the name of the GA.Much appreciated as to why my friend has her dogs teeth"cleaned" every 6 mths via this way-It is the dogs being shown and the geriatrics. I don't know the exact diet her dogs are on but she is 100% confident in the Vet's opinion EFS
  6. Michelle- DO NOT use Revolution on your Sheltie puppy UNLESS you have it DNA Tested for Ivermectin Sensitivity and the DNA Result is CLEAR! Revolution contains a Mectin based drug and if administered could prove fatal, if you pm me your email address I can send you heaps of information on the ivermectin sensitivity which is cause by a mutation of the MDR1 gene in these breeds. Stay with daily Dimmitrol, not the Chewables as they contain Ivermectin, much safer as they do not contain Ivermectin.
  7. Just to let others that use Dimmitrol Daily for heartworm prevention that there is a new form of Dimmitrol and it DOES contain IVERMECTIN so should not be given to Ivermectin sensitive breeds( Collies, Shelties, Aussies, OES, Akita's, sighthounds and others); Dimmitrol Monthly Chews. For the prevention of Heartworm Disease in dogs. Contains Ivermectin 136 mcg/chewable. One chewable per 12 - 22kg (26.4-48.4lb) bodyweight given monthly. Easy to administer and extremely palatable in a unique bone shape. Available in convenient 50 pack You can still purchase the original Dimmitrol that DOES NOT have Ivermectin
  8. LOL erny about "Spring Street" I have Collies which have been DNA Tested for Ivermectin Sensitivity( this drug and relatives of it are in most heartworm prevention products) and they are Affected so cannot have Heartgard, Revolution etc. I use Dimmitrol daily for Heartworm Prevention and have no problem remembering to give them each day as I keep the Dimmitrol next to their food bowls but be careful as Dimmitrol have now brought out a "Chewable" tablet and it DOES contain Ivermectin so for my dogs I stick to the normal Dimmitrol Tablets. ( in affected breeds , Collies, Sheltie, Aussie Sheps, OES, Akita's, sighthounds etc Ivermectin can be fatal even after one dose). As for worming I use Popantel All Wormer and have done for many years,in the late 1980's I gave one of our dogs Drontal and he threw it up with blood in the Vet surgery so did some research with the Vet and ever since then I have used Popantel every 3 months( not always to the day) as they are exposed to heaps of things at dog events and on their walks. For fleas- I use Frontline Plus( they say every 4 weeks but sometimes this is longer) as we have cats around and also the dogs go out to events etc. I would rather use prevention than try and treat a dog with Flea Allergy Dermatitis( had to do this many years ago as one of the dogs would break out in hives from just 1 flea and it was a nightmare for the dog and for us). It comes down to what best suits your dog's needs.
  9. Thanks Kelza Do you happen to know who owned the Collie Rough that won Minor in Grp 5 and the dog's name? Thanks
  10. I think the Vet should have at least examined your girl prior to dispensing antiboitics given that she has diarrohea also. Let us know how things go
  11. Melt- that is what I am hoping Dr Salter will find out, ie the procdured MUST be safe to do.I would not want one of mine undegoing a procedure that was not deemed to be safe either. GoldenRules- the Vet Opthamologist I use generally would give a dog GA to unblok a tear duct as would the normall GP vets.
  12. I had this happen a few years ago and all it turned out to be was a faulty "on,off" switch. Electrician replaced the switch and it is working fine. even if the element do go I would just do what Rysup does and bucket hot water in.
  13. This is what I am hoping Dr Salter will clarify when he speaks to the Vet who is doing this in QLD. If he does not think it is safe and thorouh then we will know.
  14. I agree with the others- Vet asap. If she has an infection and the pups are still feeding you run the risk of the infection being passed to the pups viaher milk.
  15. Thanks Rappie. That is what Dr Salter is trying to find out, ie how is it done and is it safe to do for both dog and Vet alike. Mine have their teeth hand scaled on a regular basis and then our Vet checks them in "Dental Month(August here in Vic) and decides if Vet dentistry is needed and if not their files are noted as such .
  16. That is the aim of trying to get something in Vic that won't require a GA. It may or may not happen but Dr Salter is listening to the concerns of those of us with breeds that do not blend well with GA's and he will try and get something happening and he has promised to get back to me. Even if it had to be done with 'light sedation' that would be far better than a GA. Dr Coles and Dr Inglis at Sandringham operated on my old Collie boy at age 12yo to remove a tumour on the face just under the eye. it was done with light sedation ( it needed 5 sutures) and my boy , well apart fromthe wound, you woldn't have known that he had even been given sedation. Maybe if DOLers are interested in something like this they could at least ring the Clinic( now known as Green Cross Vet Hospital, Bluff Rd Sandringham- used to be Sandringham Vet Hospital) and that way we will have more chance of getting a safer way to have dog's teeth clean and healthy as Dr Salter will then know there is a need for this.
  17. SilverBlue- I always have pre-bloods with a GA but my breed and several others are extremely sensitive to GA's. My friend in QLD has her dogs done this way and if the dog is used to being"mouthed" it is not an issue. As I said before it may not be feasible but if it is it will lessen the risk factor for those of us with GA sensitive breeds. Even if it could be done with light sedation would be less risky as a GA IMHO
  18. The Vet who does this in QLD is Dr Scott Heinemann at Ascot Vet Clinic. After speaking several times with a fellow Collie breeder/owner who takes their Collies in for a 6mthly scale and clean I have been trying for months to find someone here in Victoria that can do this. I contacted my former Vet, Dr Stephen Coles , as he specialises in Vet Dentistry but is only at his clinc in Sandringham a couple of days of month these days. I left all the details with the Receptionist and one of Dr Coles associates( Dr Rod Salter) who specialises in Vet Dentistry and he called me today to obtain all the details for the Vet in QLD and he will be contacting him to find out what is involved and if it is feasiable to do and a better options for breeds that do not blend well with GA's. I also contacted the other Vet Dentistry here in Vic, Dr David Clarke, 2 days ago and I am still waiting for at least a Courtesy call back Years ago I had a Collie stop breathing under a GA(routine procedure) and it was only the quickness of the Vet that she came too and made it through. Several friends have lost Collies and Shelties uner GA's for routine procedures so anything that will lessen the risk is worth looking into. From the way it was explained to me it is very similar to ones done under a GA with much less risk. Collies are especially obliging when having things done to them. My beloved Maggie aka Ch Colbeau Go Get Em legal, had a blocked tear duct and most would have to have a GA for this. Not Maggie, she sat there and let the Opthamologist prod and probe etc all under a local anaesthtic and he had a Vet over from Germany and she was so amazed that my Collie just said there that she recorded it on her camcorder to show the Vets 'back home' as they would not believe her. I will keep you all up to date as soon as i know any more.
  19. That is beautiful Julie Matey , you are now pain free at the Rainbow Bridge, watching over your Humans My thoughts are with you FeistyLady. All of us have had to make this decision at some stage and even if the dog is in it's senior years it still hurts At least with animals we can let them 'die with dignity' - alas we cannot do that with our Human loved ones.
  20. I am with Aziah here, a hot damp towel with get the dirt out of coat and you can always add a drop of eucalyptus oil to the water to get rid of any doggy smell(that is if your dog is not allergic to it).
  21. Stormie, from the way it was explained to me by a friend in QLD who has their dogs teeth cleaned this way it is a similar method they use under a GA just different techniques and the dog has to be used to having it's mouth inspected. Most Conformation dogs would be used to that as they have to have their mouths examined by Judges for correct bites and dentitition etc and I think most dogs owned by DOLers would be used to having their mouths 'looked at'/ tess32- the Vet specialises in veterinary dentistry and consults at many Clinics across the South Eastern Suburbs of Melbourne. The Vet in QLD that does it sees the dogs twice a year for their 'scale and clean' having a breed( Collies) that do not blend with GA's I am hoping that we can get this up and running here in Vic. I will keep you all informed as the the progress of this and crossing paws too that it can happen
  22. Well hello! Tell us all something we didn't already know. My Collies are extremely perceptive and when Dad passed away last year they "knew" when I was going to cry and I would have two adult Collies on my lasp comforting me. They know the signals if I take very ill and have to call 000, the younger one sits and yoddles at me. My beloved Maggie(Ch Colbeau Go Get Em Legal) was nick-named Nurse Maggie as she could pick up on anyone that was not feeling up to par and would not leave their side. Mine also like to "watch" TV- they don't chase horses etc when we are out but if they appear on the TV they 'tell' they to get out of their house and try and find them behind the TV.
  23. How many dog owners out there want their dogs to have a proper scale and clean but don't want their dogs having a GA to do so? One you don't like unnecessary GA's and two GA's make them drop coat! Also as our dogs reach their older years it can be hard to keep their teeth and gums clean and healthy Some dogs cannot have bones for whatever reason and mine fall into that catergory... I have been in touch with a well knownVeterinarian who specialises in Veterinary Dentist here in Melbourne and he is going to find out all about it from the Vet in QLD that does it and will get back to me as he is extremely interested in starting this up. A laser is used to clean the teeth so no GA as it is just like a vet consult and it is done usually every six months. So if anyone is interested in having this done could you please email me privately at [email protected] and I will keep a list and then if we can get this happening here In Victoria I can let you all know. Regards Colleen
