Day 4. My new rescue kitten, "Riot"

My boy Roscoe is from Beychief, I would highly recommend sending Christine (the kennel owner) a email and asking her any questions you have :) She's generally happy to fly puppies interstate, or she may recommend a breeder closer to you :)

Warning: Very loud puppy sounds! Puppies are very loud and very talented at sounding like they're about to die at any moment :p They get over it. As long as, they are not cold, have been fed, had a drink, recently been to the toilet, then just ignore it and it will pass. Roscoe (who is now a LOT bigger than that video) was very unhappy about a crate, he got over it, he now puts himself to bed in a crate when he feels like it :)

Roscoe brought me a tennis ball.. into the shower. The door of which he figured out how to open. Evil genius dog :p

I would use a prong collar long before I would touch a halti, just as personal preference, comes from experience though at seeing the damage a halti can do . I would suggest seeing a trainer before you potentially waste a bunch of money/time on tools that may or may not be effective long term. You want to train a new behaviour, you don't want a bandaid!

I've never seen Umina busy, for the size of the beach, I'll come across maybe 4-5 dogs the entire 2+ hour I am there, and thats on a busy day. Half of them are generally on leash too. Before I was working full time I would go in the afternoon on a weekday, so 3pm till sunset. And on the weekend, I'll go 2pm onwards. Same thing. Maybe i've just been lucky?

So my friend and I went to the council yesterday to make our official statements! The ranger has been really good with how seriously they're taking it, and very helpful. The next step is that they will go find the other dogs owner and give him the chance to make a statement. I've no doubt the guy is gonna lie through his teeth too. I'll have to contact a lawyer about the vet bill though, see how I have to go about getting that paid.

you might want to check out Umina beach, its up in towards the central coast. I am like you and do not like by dogs being near strange off leash dogs, but this beach is HUGE, and you can easily see any other dogs coming for at least a km each direction. Its not very busy either :)

Currently I'm waiting to hear back, they have to confirm with police that this is a council matter. When they have that confirmation they can start moving forward.

I thought about this but I was advised it could potentially jeopardise my case against this guy. Especially if I have to take him to court over the vet bill. I'm going to wait to talk to the council and see what they say first. I spoke to them today so I know everything is moving. Hmm maybe a flyer with a description of the dog, the guy and his car wouldn't count as deformation... I am honestly afraid of what this dog will do to a smaller animal, or one that can't defend itself like Riddick It was seriously scary how intent it was on damaging my boy.

"I don't know why that other dog was so angry mum Was it something I did?" His poor ear. Shaved by the vet. She said he'll always have those 2 chunks missing, but luckily bitches love scars ;) So at least it will help his manly Rep. Hehe

Yeah! Antibiotics and anti-inflammatory for a 30 kilo dog. Plus a chest xray (he got seriously bashed around and is very sore around his chest area, thankfully just bruising!), after hours fee because it was on Saturday, plus general shaving and cleanup of his ear.

Hey Everyone, thanks for the replies. Riddick is doing really well, his ear is a bit swollen, and hes sore in general, but the vet gave us some anti inflamatories so he's not in any pain. Hes such a lover, even when this other dog was trying to go after him, he never once turned around and said "its on". He just dodged and defended himself the whole time. He's also not showing any emotional damage from the attack which is AWESOME! Thank god for solid dogs! I met up with a few friends on sunday, and he was happy as ever to say hello to everyone and their dogs :). I reported everything to the police and to the council, and we went to the vet straight after. So everything is being recorded and I am going to make sure this guy gets what he deserves. People like that shouldn't be allowed to get away with ruining it for the rest of us. I've seen him there every weekend and his dog has come growling up to mine, but I never reported it as the owner always grabbed the dog before it could do anything. This was the final straw and he will be paying. I feel sorry for his dog, but honestly its a serious danger to other dogs. I know serious intent when I see it, this dog wasn't stopping and I shudder to think what would have happened if it had been a smaller dog, or one less able to defend itself. I did have Roscoe my GSD with me as well, but thank god he just stood back and let me handle it. He was, according to my friend, circling us the whole time, but the second the other dog was caught by me, Roscoe just stopped. The vet bill is over $600 for one thing. Waiting for my phone call from the rangers today.

My beautiful Labrador Riddick was attacked today, and has several puncture wounds in his ear as well as possible chest injuries. The attacker was a large black male Labrador (or lab x Rottweiler judging by size and head shape. Possibly entire). Happened at St Ives show ground today (06 october) around 3pm. The dog first tried to attack my friend Jason's GSD Rogue who was on a leash, when Jason pulled Rogue back, the Lab turned and full on went after Riddick. Riddick defended himself while moving away from the other dog, but it was seriously intent on hurting him The owner, finally managed to catch his dog after I pulled it off Riddick. This is probably the 8th or 9th time I have come across this guy and his dog. It Always runs straight across the oval and goes after my dogs, it had tried to attack my friends dog on several occasions and it is seriously intent on injuring the other dog. Riddick defended himself but continuously moved away from the other dog, trying to get to me and stop the situation. The other dog kept going 100%, trying to bite. The guy called me a "stupid *#%*" and said "it's your dogs fault". Despite the fact that his dog ran all the way across the entire St Ives oval (easily 200 Metres), straight at my dogs. His dog went after the ON LEASH Rogue, who tucked her tail and tried to get away. It then went straight for my incredibly friendly well socialized exceptionally well behaved Labrador who whilst defending himself, tried to get away and retreat to me the entire time. Not once did he turn and go after the other dog. I am SICK of assholes like this, and their poor dogs who have 0 chance in life because their owner is a complete moron. I am doing every thing I can to make sure this guy will be paying for this. He refused to apologise, calling me a bitch and a "stupid f***ing *#%*", he refused to provide his name or give me his details, despite the obvious blood on my hands that came from Riddicks puncture wounds. So I have taken a photo of his car and rego. He has been reported to the police and to the council who will be contacting me Monday. People like this guy need to learn their are consequences for bringing a obviously dog aggressive dog with a extensive history, to a off leash park and letting it go. He will be paying the vet bill at the very least, even if I have to take him to court. Just warning anyone who goes to this area, be wary of a 40+ year old man, with a very large black entire Labrador. The dog is always on a long check chain. Has 0 recall and goes straight after any other large dogs if it is off leash. This is the reason I don't go into parks It was raining and empty however, and it is so huge I thought we would be fine. I should be able to take my dog into a huge oval like that where they are legally allowed off leash, without having to worry about a large dog attacking them with the intent to seriously injure. Very sad Hard to see the damage, but 2 small chunks are completely missing and there are 4 puncture wounds in the ear. There are not other visible injuries that I could find, and the vet couldn't find any either. Thank god for my awesome dog and his avoidance and defence skills, otherwise there would have been way worse injuries .

Roscoe figured out long ago, that if he would put a toy in my lap, I would often throw it for him. Its a little annoying at times, but pretty adorable and convenient if I want to play with him and do a bit of work/read a book at the same time. Watching him get super frustrated when I gently place the toy about 30 cm away instead of throwing it, and he picks it up and plonks it in my lap over and over again is always hilarious :D. I was asleep on the couch, and when I got up, about 8 toys fell off my back. It seems that Roscoe has been carefully placing toy after toy "Maybe you'll throw This one..hmm what about this one?" not understanding I was sound asleep.

I love this moment..Am I a bad person for deliberatly setting up a mirror so I can have a giggle at the puppy going "WTF!?" :laugh:

I really wouldn't worry about it! Sounds like you dealt with it well. Probably just something weird that hes never noticed (if hes still young he could only recently have gotten to a height where he can see them?) and it well an truly freaked him out. I remember when Roscoe was about 6 months old and he suddenly noticed his reflection in the tv (when it was turned off), funniest thing watching him bark at himself, the run to me for reassurance, then bark again, then run back :laugh: I have a video of it somewhere too

So what would be the difference between diffusing a situation and protecting a "pack member"?

This is how I feel Bec! I like to Think thats what happened, but I don't really believe it. What do you reckon? Agreed. One of my bitches here diffuses situations, both here & at other places & she does a damn good job of it, bless her. Interesting! What sort of situations does she diffuse? My parents Labrador Rover used to diffuse situations a lot, I saw it happen on a number of occasions. He would let any dog mount him and just stand there without a care in the world, yet when a fight would start to break out, he would barge between the two dogs and interrupt it. A dog would try and pick a fight, posture up to him growling, Rover was perfect. He would turn it into a game, or just turn into a sheep and ignore the other dogs existence 100%. Worked every single time.

Hmm I'm not sure. Roscoes temperament is not like that. Hes had dogs big and small have a go at him, jump on him to try and make him play, nip at him or growl. His reaction is always turn away and ignore. He's not submissive, he just doesn't give a shit. Hes never once reacted to any other dog in any way. Thats why this was out of character and so interesting to me. Hes had a full grown entire male malinois race up to a fence going off his nut, and Roscoes reaction was to just wag his tail, lick the other dog and say hello :D (hes entire too btw!)

Something really interesting happened at the dog beach on the weekend, and Im not 100% sure of why it happened. This is about just friendly discussion on what you feel are the reasons behind the various dogs actions! So I have my Working line GSD Roscoe, who is 1 years old, doesn't really have any value for other dogs except for his brother Riddick. He is a young dog though so will occasionally get excited by another dogs toy or someone elses game of Zoomies :p! My almost 3 year old Labrador Riddick has a great love for any and all other dogs, but hes got great manners. He will recall away from other dogs on 1 word, doesn't barge up to strange dogs, and always approaches or doesn't based on the other dogs behaviour. I went to the beach on Saturday late afternoon so it was pretty quiet. I always do my best to avoid any and all other dogs, because I'm there to play with my dogs and let them play with each other. I dont let them play with strange dogs and I dont let them approach strange dogs. I was down at the very end of the beach and a woman is walking towards me with her 2 small dogs and large labrador cross (im guessing). Roscoe is chasing his ball and Riddick is just doing his thing, sniffing and peeing on stuff. I move further down the beach away from the lady, but she keeps approaching me and her dogs are way ahead of her. One of the little dogs charged up to Riddick, whose body language changes instantly. He was not comfortable, ears pinned, hackles raised a little, tail straight out behind him. I know his body language and this was basically him saying "Im really not sure about this dog" and hes ALWAYS right. I hear a growl from the little dog, and its friend comes racing up to join it also growling. Riddick whines, takes a few steps away and then moves to bolt back towards me as the 2 little dogs arc up growling and barking (for 0 reason, they approached Riddick who did nothing but stand there). At the moment I start to run towards him (I don't care they're little and couldn't do much damage, I will ALWAYS protect my boys!), I see Roscoe come racing past me. He cuts between Riddick and the other dogs, effectively shouldering both the 2 small dogs out of his way and away from Riddick. Then trots back to me with his shoulder right against Riddicks, right up until he was infront of me, at which point he ran off to retrieve his ball that he dropped. The little dogs retreated, looking startled and confused. And I was able to cut past and move away down the beach with no further incident. Roscoe was back to his usual complete lack of attention for other dogs and brought me his ball. Riddick stuck near me for a little while then went back to doing his own thing. Now I found this really interesting, I like to think that Roscoe was protecting his brother by diffusing a bad situation, but is that humanising something that could have been completely by accident? If Riddick sniffs another dog, Roscoe will often check it out on his way past and maybe have a sniff as well. This is pretty much the only time he'll pay attention to another dog. Yet it seemed to be more than that, he ran behind Riddick, cutting off the two little dogs, and then stayed right next to him. What are you thoughts?

I found a super breeder that I just loved, I went and met her and the dogs on a few occasions. Took 5 years till I was in a position to actually get a WL GSD, went back to the breeder who put me at the top of her list :D Loved the bitch, loved the sire. Researched the lines both dogs came from and found a lot that I liked. Then went to see the litter, Roscoe was the one who wouldn't leave me alone, he nommed my pants, latched on and wouldn't let go, then rolled onto his back for a wriggly belly rub <3

Sorry I didn't update, Its been pretty hectic! well Roscoe is back home again, his new tests all came back clear (thank god). Hes on easy food for the next few days and fingers crossed I can start easing him onto his normal diet again. More tests later in the week, just to be sure everythings ok.
