  1. Ewww... How foul. Just because behaviour is accepted in some countries doesn't mean I want to be hearing jokes about it here.
  2. Sounds like you're doing a great job with your pup. And don't let the, 'are you sure that's a lab' comment get to you, people just accept and even expect dogs to be badly behaved. I have a doberman and just the other day, someone asked me what he was whilst they were patting him (and he was being his usual beautiful self I might add), and when I told them, they were like, oh aren't those the vicious dogs? And how can they not, when the people who're supposed to know something, Eg. The staff at a pet store. Have a on heat dog that tries to rush at other dogs.
  3. One thing we did was buy a bean bag and put around half the suggested amount of beans in it. We've had one for 2 years now and its still going strong! Buy a few single bed sheets and cover the beanbag. Then swap when they get smelly!
  4. Did you see Bedazzled's earlier post about putting the food in your hand, holding your hands out and rewarding when the dog makes eye contact with you? That's what I did and I find it useful because it teaches the dog to look to you for the food. Yes I saw but, How do I get that continued focus on me, even after I mark and move my hand. If I am just marking a good behaviour and not treating him for it, I don't want him breaking that focus. Also, So more advice I should have said.
  5. Small world hey!! Well, you should be proud of Riddick - he did great!!! I never would have picked him as a shy dog. I just thought he was a very well behaved boy considering he looked to be quite young! Yes hes only 5 months My baby boy. A lot of training has gone into making him that way so I love hearing you never would have picked him as a shy dog :D Have PMed
  6. Love that motto ;) I can PM you the store and location if you feel like strolling up. As long as you tell me when so I can listen in to your educational chat :D
  7. Was nice meeting you too! How funny! (glad my story isn't some kind of lie or you certainly could have caught me out! ) Yes he used to duck and run if a stranger approached him, Not body-wag his way up to people like he did to you (is very proud of her boy !) Which is why he gets much praise and treats whenever he does it. They encourage you to bring your dog, there's a set of scales to weigh them too.
  8. So should I complain? As well as being bad advertising, its seriously unsafe!
  9. So I took Mr Riddick (5 month lab puppy) to a pet store today (One that doesn't sell animals). I'm exposing him to every situation I can think of ! I walked in, and was strolling around, letting him sniff about. I started heading towards the freezer section, when one of the staff members says casually "Oh don't go near there, shes on heat and doesn't like other dogs." I look around and see that the "she" being spoken of is a large staffy cross, sitting on a tucked away bed next to the freezer. She spots Riddick, starts growling, then rushes at him. I pulled Riddick behind me, (he basically shrugged at the whole situation, :D for my chilled out puppy ) and was stopped by her very long lead (consisting of 3 or so lead tied togethor). The staff member walks out and yells at the dog "Grr No!! On your bed!!" Dog slinks back to her bed. I was pretty much shocked and didn't really react. I didn't expect to walk into a pet store and have another dog, Owned by a staff member no less, to try and attack my puppy! Just thankful I wasn't closer. I walked off down a aisle, Riddick trotting along with me, investigating things. Thankfully having no reaction to being rushed by another dog. A couple minutes later the same staff member approached me to say "Oh she is on heat, shes normally not that bitchy". I asked "Oh are you a professional breeder?"(wondering why this dog isn't desexed), staff member replies "Oh shes not mine, she belongs to another girl" and walks off. I had a conversation with a friend who works at the store, dog belongs to another staff member who breeds from her. We where chatting when the staff member in question walked up, She bent down to say hi to Riddick who walked up to her doing his body-wag thing (again at my puppy who used to run away, approaching a stranger!). She then says "What is he?" Me: "A labrador" Her" oh, is he purebred?" Me. "Uhm, yes." Her."oh, you sure? Labs don't usually act this way." Me. "Well hes from guide dogs lines, they're supposed to act that way" Her."oh ok, you sure?" Me."YES!" sheesh I found this kind of offensive to be honest. She was questioning my dogs breeding, in a fairly insulting manner.(Or that is how it came across at least.) She then bitched about how she hated labaradors, even though mine was "ok". I just left after that. Fairly pissed off about the whole situation. A staff member insulting one of my favourite breeds, and who breeds her cross dog for god knows what reason. I want to complain to the company about them having a aggressive dog in store who was on heat, and could quite possibly have bitten my puppy! And maybe add something about promoting backyard breeding. Would it be over reacting to complain? Not happy with it at all. Don't want to go back to that pet store now!
  10. So so so!!! My boy Riddick (who is so adorable at 5 months, I may just die from the cuteness!!!) Working on eye contact! He's got a habit I noticed today, of when I recall, he orientates himself towards my right hand, which is where the treat comes from! What are ways to work on stopping this? It goes side along with eye contact. He only gets the treat if hes looking at me. But how do I gain steady eye contact, At the moment its, glance at eyes - to right hand - to eyes. Even if hes staring at me and I mark it, when I mark he then looks at my hand, waiting for treat. Today I started treating him from my left hand instead, but I figure hes gonna just start staring at my left hand instead. So, TEACH ME!!! What can I do?
  11. +2 I wouldn't want to offer advice without seeing anything, in case what I assume it wrong.
  12. She looks so serious Concentrating extra hard to make sure she gets every bit of heat...
  13. I would love a link to that study if you have one?
  14. The youtube channel belongs to Linny who used to post here a few years ago until she was banned for promoting DDs - she has her own forum now. No surprise to see she is posting the same drivel she was when she was on DOL Oh really... I suppose replying will be pointless then
  15. Hey check out the comments - all of them pro DD and anti PB, I bet the 'delete comment' button has been used by the uploader And look at the comment where someone claims to be Don Burke's close mate, interesting indeed. Going somewhat OT here, but I really couldn't let this reply pass. I tried to leave a comment. Which stated that DD's are mutts and the don burke is a prat. This is the reply I got. "Thank you for your comment on my video. However, I believe there is a good argument for breeding hybrid "designer dogs" as pets. All the scientific research shows mutts live longer and are healthier than purebreds. Most people just want a happy, healthy family pet. Say Boxer and vets think heart disease; say Golden Retriever and they think cancer. The incidence and severity of inherited diseases in purebred dogs increases every year, and yet traditional breeders continue with outdated practices (like inbreeding and line breeding) that continuously limit genetic diversity. The recent BBC program "Pedigree Dogs Exposed" did much to bring the health problems in purebred dogs to the attention of the general public (see http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseacti...deoid=44215931) In addition, changing fashions and fads in the show ring have caused some purebred breeders to exaggerate physical characteristics that make dogs more susceptible to health problems problems (bulging eyes in Pekingese, elongated backs in Dachshunds etc). Recently the RSPCA in the UK cut it's ties with the Kennel Club dog shows for "encouraging the breeding of deformed and disabled dogs" (see http://uk.reuters.com/article/domesticNews...63987020080916). However, hybrid "Designer Dogs", can provide the best of both worlds, purebreds and mutts: the ability to carefully select the parent dogs for health and temperament, and test for inherited diseases (like you can with purebreds); and the increased health and longevity provided by genetic diversity (like mutts). Certainly you need to be careful. There are puppy mills that have jumped on to the Designer Dog band wagon purely to make a profit. However, there are also many dedicated hybrid breeders whose main aim is to produce healthy dogs, without the genetic problems that plague many purebreds. They carefully select the breeds they use, and test the parent dogs for any possible inherited problems. They aren't trying to produce a particular "look", or compete with purebreds - these breeders simply want to provide healthy, happy family pets." ............................................................ ........ Don't know whether to laugh or cry?
  16. Dear sweet lord I want to punch this man in the face :p ;) ;)
  17. Max is currently being walked in very short periods and so far he isn't showing any fear! Which is a very good sign !!!
  18. My ex bartended at a function where Mr Burke was, and I've also heard he was a complete ass. He would order a drink and then Tell the bartender how to make it. Cause obviously they didnt know.... I remember watching his show when I was younger, had no idea then he was such a tool. On a completely OT note. My Lab puppy try's very hard to frolic with my friends IW! Drew (the IW) will be trotting around and Riddick will go bounding along beside him "Im playing with the big dog Woohoo!!". Drew doesn't even notice hes there
  19. edited to add newspaper quote I hadn't heard of this before. I will pass this information along!
  20. Update! My aunty spoke to someone from the council yesterday, apparently one of the men who helped pull the dog of zack needed to get 17 stitches in his arm!!!! They still haven't managed to find the dog or the owner.
  21. I would try soaking the paws in warm/hot water! Works for people skin and I don't think it will hurt your dogs paws? Edit to add, I would also be very careful about any licking or anything of the glue.
  22. Don't know if anyone has posted this, but here is one of the news clips that has been on 9 news. http://news.ninemsn.com.au/video.aspx?tab=...b2-e91bbb91868f
  23. I live in the northern beaches Oh, that's a little bit far from Blacktown for me to come take him for a walk. How long are you laid up for ? One little training exercise is a simple focus exercise where you either call his name or choose a command 'look', 'watch', 'focus' or something like that. This is cut and pasted from the web, but it's this kind of thing. Watch your dog's eyes. Whenever your dog looks at you, click or say your marker word, and give your dog a treat. Don't do anything special to get your dog's attention - just wait for it and capture it. Do this throughout the day.In addition to noticing your dog's attention to you throughout the day, do some rapid rounds of rewarding eye contact. For one minute, click or mark and treat every time your dog looks at you - as many times as you possibly can in one minute. Repeat this a few times. Now play "The Eye Contact Game": hold some treats in your hand and hold your hand out to one side. Don't say anything to get your dog's attention; just wait patiently while your dog stares at the treats to tries to get them (just hold your hand closed). The moment the dog tears his eyes off of the hand with the treats and looks at your face instead, click and treat! Thanks for that :p! Yes a little bit far for you. Im not sure how long I'll be laid up for! After physio today I am allowed to walk for 10 or so minutes at a time, but no sitting if I can help it! I'm hoping after a few days it will be well enough for me to go out and about. I pmed you! If you feel like bring your staffy over to molest my lab for a while, feel free Thanks for these! I will read through them now
