Yeah the little bastard.... Wouldn't you say that its still ignoring though, a known command (Come), basically a STFU to whatever I've said, I'm gonna make you chase me instead yayyy? There isn't anything about being outside that is bad, he looves running in my yard. I don't really know why exactly he would flip me off and decided running through the house is better, might in fact be the personal attention. My problem is I couldn't really safely let him run around my house without me inside. There is some equipment and cables in different rooms he could hurt himself on... I'll have to try shutting the door in his face and walking off if he tries it again, Interesting what you say about corruption, I handed over the lead to his owner this afternoon after he walked beautifully on it all the way up to her car, the second I handed it over he starts to drag her off.. Maybe I gotta have the owner come around and teach her some stuff too. I don't have any problem with proper use of correction, Except how can you correct a dog when hes bolting in the opposite direction off lead? Also I agree that I may be overestimating how much the dog really knows. Taking his owners word for a few things that he may not Reeaally understand which makes any kind of correction pretty redundant.

Yep thats what I do with puppies to start with. I always have my treat bag on me anyway when Ive got dogs around! Yeah thats what Im thinking.. I don't think they ever faded luring! ( I think it was a case of, the guide dog people will do it when they get him.) If he knows the commands, should I still start as if he is a puppy do you think? It wouldn't hurt, if it turns out you can raise the criteria very quickly at first then that is a bonus. I don't even put the cue on until I have to, no point changing what it means all the time until it's right IMHO. Yeah good point. Thanks

Well I didn't have a lead, I grabbed him by the collar and its not going to hurt him. He is not at all soft in any way, shape or form. One of my lab boys is very soft, so much as raise your voice and he winces (we call him Snap dog, Sensitive New Age Puppy) so I know what you mean about shutting down.

Know him since he was a puppy, nice dog, he goes into excited waggy labrador motions every time he sees me . Gets along great with my dogs, though he is a bit obsessive with licking Rovers face. He has had all the basic training, sit, down, stay, come. But he completely ignores his owners most of the time unless there is food right infront of his nose. It is their first dog, he was supposed to go to guide dogs but couldn't because of issues with one of his legs. The owner is fine with anything I want to do with him, I wouldn't do something she was not ok with. (she is a friend). Plus it wasn't anything over the top, collar grab, pulled outside and given a timeout. I may have over dramatised it before. Edit to add, this isn't the first time he has been here and I have already gone through and established what commands he knows. So its not a case of hes ignoring me cause I'm not "Pack". He listens to me more than his owners (or atleast thats what his mum tells me!) Its more a case of, I can ignore any and all humans without consequences.

So I'm looking after my friends dog once a week and the biggest problem I've noticed is that he will basically flip you off 99% of the time you tell him to do ANYTHING. Example, We where all headed into the yard, I walked out with my 2 boys, turned around and He is standing in the doorway. I say "come on, outside" (outside being the command that he knows). He looks at me, then bolts in the opposite direction into the house (EDIT: Just adding, I then said Come after Outside when he ignored it) . Now this was probably the wrong reaction, but I followed him inside, cornered him (after about 5 minutes) and then dragged him by the collar and threw him outside, alone, and shut the curtain. Gave it a minute, he was totally silent, then came outside and stood with my arms crossed ignoring his existence until he went and laid down. Then I called him for a pat. I'm wondering how I should approach this behaviour as well as the whole flipping off at every basic command unless bribed by food thing.. I will be looking after him weekly and I don't really think his owners will do that much at home with him. Any suggestions on how to work on this? My thoughts so far are that I need to go back to very basics with him. Always on lead so he doesn't have the opportunity to get away like that. Maybe do training sessions with him throughout the day while hes here.

Pet Resorts is another good kennel. Steve and Vicki Austin who own it are awesome.

Looking For Some Advise On Right Type Of Dog
lovemesideways replied to adogisforlife's topic in General Dog Discussion
Another option would be a Labrador! Either a older lab that is settled down (there are plenty in rescue!), or a puppy from a good breeder that will be able to pick the temperament for you. My 2 boys are both from guide dog lines and they are incredibly calm for labs. Coat is not high level maintenance, though they do shed quite a bit (less with lots of brushing) A few hours of exercise a day (which Im sure they will get with all the kids!!) and a lab will make a great dog! I prefer bigger dogs around small kids because they are a lot less breakable (the dogs I mean ) Our dogs are bomb proof so that even when my 5 year old nephew decided it would be funny to smack on of them with a pillow, they just lay there and ignored it. Plus most labs I know would have no idea what to do with a guinea pig besides lick it -

Dealing With Someone Elses Dog Humping Yours?
lovemesideways replied to freundhund's topic in General Dog Discussion
I will literally throw another dog off my dog by the scruff of the neck if it tries to hump. Another method I've found is if you knee the dog humping in the right spot, they will spring off. (Which I know you have to be careful with) Ignore stupid people and do what you think is best for your dog. -
Ah yes, indeed. And the loo. Yes! And God forbid if I try to sneak away to the bathroom without Riddick knowing, (so he can sit and watch, making sure I don't sneak away through the secret door he knows is in there..) No sooner have I shut the door, then you hear SNIIFFFF SNIIIIIIFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF under the door frame.

Should I Or Shouldn't I? Any Thoughts Appreciated.
lovemesideways replied to spottychick's topic in General Dog Discussion
He never shuts up truth be told :D Oh except most times I try to capture it on film I wish I'd shut up during the vid tho - I hate my stupid laugh in it - but I cant help laughing Thats the EXACT noise that My labrador puppy Riddick makes! He likes to "talk" when hes super happy or playing or just wants attention. WOW!!! Really!!!??? Even that hilarious wobbly chin noise hahahahaha!! yay! That's so cool! There's another loony dog out there :D We should record them and play them to each other then watch what they do to see if it's a special wierdo dog code. I'd love to see a vid of Riddick doing that actually I'll have to try and get a video of him doing it ;)!! -
