What Would Be The "right" Thing To Do?
lovemesideways replied to lovemesideways's topic in General Dog Discussion
Have you been able to get an update on the injured GSD ? and just for my 2 cents worth if my dog injured another I would offer to pay the vet bills Was a husky, and nope Haven't seen him and none of my friends who frequent the park have either. Hes a well known guy and so is his dog, so hopefully someone will hear something. -
What Would Be The "right" Thing To Do?
lovemesideways replied to lovemesideways's topic in General Dog Discussion
Just gonna add that the original topic of discussion was, do you think the owner of the staffy mix should have stayed and offered to vet fees, or whether due to the husky growling first, they are exempt of that responsibility.. This wasn't about dog parks. This was a question on responsibility. I'm with Corvus on this one, I think some of you guys need t-shirts.... -
Haha we call it open mouth bitey face here :p!

What Would Be The "right" Thing To Do?

I don't really know what your problem is but you seem to have the opinion that either by very big I mean kilometers, or maybe I just have horrible eye sight? I was wearing glasses. It isn't hard to see a dogs behavior across this oval. There was nobody in the way and I was watching the gate at the time. Also my friend was standing right nearby when it happened and confirmed what I saw. So that comments about "how could you see" aren't really necessary and if you think that the thread is bullshit then why are you even commenting? Must have been a very loud growl for you to hear it from the other side of the oval too. Note the part about my friend standing nearby? Yeah, she heard the growl. Sheesh whats your problem? -

What Would Be The "right" Thing To Do?

I'll be back at the park today, so hopefully the elderly gentleman will be there with his other dog and I can ask how the husky is going. If the staffy mix is there I will be getting some photos of them and their names to report to council. Not when its a almost empty oval with a clear view across. I blame the owners of the staffy mix because they brought a dog who was not under any sort of control to a dog park. When their dog then tried to seriously injure or kill another animal, they left. I have no doubt they will come back to that same park with the same dog, and the same this is going to happen again. Report the owners for bringing a dog who was not under control to a off leash area where they legally need to be under control (even though most owners ignore this) And so hopefully this same situation can be avoided. Its like if you're walking down the street and somebody bumps you, and you say "Hey watch it!" and that person who bumps you then turns around and pulls out a knife and stabs you. Thats not a appropriate response. Dogs are dogs, but there is a such a thing as proper manners. If my young lab sniffs a older dog who growls and tells him to piss off, my dog walks away, thats a appropriate response. Not trying to kill the other dog. If I saw a kid trying to seriously injure or kill another kid I would be calling the police. Not shrugging and saying "oh well kids will be kids" This wasn't a little disagreement, and yes I do know the difference. This was a serious fight resulting in injuries that will cost a lot of money to fix. There is no excuse for your dog trying to seriously injure or kill another animal. That dog should not be in a off leash area with other dogs and children. What if the other dog who growled had been the little jack russel who was being walked by a small girl? That dog would be dead and potentially the girl seriously injured if she had tried to grab and pick up her small dog. -
So I was at a off leash park today and I saw a dog fight :( , unfortunately I was on the other side of the massive oval at the time otherwise Im pretty sure I could have stopped it a hell of a lot quicker than what they did. (which was screaming and hitting the dogs with their leads) A Husky and a large Staffy x got into a nasty fight, the Staffy X was let into the park, very excited, ran in and bumped the husky. The husky turned around and growled at the staffy X, and the staffy x went back at the husky in a big way. Husky was screaming and trying to get away from the other dog, not fighting back just trying to run away, cowering ect. The staffy kept going at her, biting and trying to shake her. Nobody was helping and really it was just awful. Someone grabbed the Staffy X finally and stopped it. The owners of the staffy X VERY quickly clipped it on lead and hurried out of the park. I went over to see how the husky was, she wasn't in a good way. yelping and shaking, with either bruising or puncture wounds on her back in 2 different areas that where visible. She has the massive husky coat so that protected her a lot, there where chunks of the fur missing. I helped her owner who is a elderly gentleman to get a leash on her and just chatted to him, he took her off to the vet straight away so hopefully she'll be alright. SO! My question is, who is really responsible for this? The husky was the one who growled first at this dog bumping her, but the other dog did not react in a appropriate way. This wasn't a, "I'm gonna pin you down and show you whos boss!", lots of noise but no contact sort of fight. This was serious, there would have been really nasty wounds if it was a dog with less coat than a husky. Even with all her coat there was a small amount of blood visible and some marks, and lots more that wouldn't be I'm guessing. so should the staffy x owners pay for the huskys vet bills? or because the husky growled first at the dog bumping her, should they be exempt from all responsibility? I personally find their behaviour of running away to be disgusting, no matter who growled at who first I'll be getting some more info and reporting the staffy mix tomorrow. No I don't have any sort of breed prejudice BTW, love bull breeds. Any dangerous dog needs to be reported cause what if the next dog who growls at this dog is a small terrier...

My guys get washed pretty much every single week. They are indoor dogs but they get a run and rumble with friends dogs at offleash areas pretty much daily, plus drooling and chewing on eachother. I like them to smell clean. None of them have issues, and all have lovely shiny beautiful coats !

I actually thought of you when they where partaking in their morning bitey face, On top of the blankets that where on top of me. I think I prefer Emmy and charlie doing it to the 60+ kilos of dog that is Ricky and Riddick :p!! They aren't always this gentle! Ricky the shepherd goes over the top so hes slowly learning not to beat up his bro too hard ;)! When they're outside they do amazing zoomies, full speed growling running biting goodness, its great :D

Riddick and ricky having a vicious battle :p Around 20 seconds is where funniest bit happens :D

Not just annoying, downright dangerous and potentially cruel. Check out this page from the same site that turned up on a mailing list today: http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/articles/alphadog.htm I totally agree. I do think in some cases that dominance plays a part. But its not the cookie cutter ideal that is put across at the moment. That whole article is pretty scary.. "Through the walk the dog was whining in a very anxious way.", "When he was corrected it was either done in a passive way or done in an angry way and the dog would pee." How does that sound like a confident dog in any way, shape or form??? Poor dog. (Psst, I tried to send you a message regarding something Corvus but won't let me. If you feel like changing that I would like to send you that message.)

Agressive Dog In Brighton Dog Park
lovemesideways replied to toy dog's topic in General Dog Discussion
All inaccuracies aside, this dog BIT you. I don't care if it was redirected aggression. You should report this to the council with as much detail as possible regarding the dog and the owner. What if he attacks some kids dog next and then redirects onto the child when they try to intervene? REPORT IT. -
I get the, What are your dogs crossed with? They can't be labs, all labs are fat! And now with the BFs GSD, the look of utter terror when any small dog or child ventures near him. We where out at a cafe, Riddick the Lab and Ricky the GSD where laying at our feet completely chilled out and the little girl runs over and throws herself on the ground in front of Ricky. Everyone in the surrounding area literally took a breath, waiting for the vicious Shepherd to maul this child. Ricky leaned forward and gave her some really gentle licks on her chin, then went back to sleeping while she patted his head. Take THAT breed prejudice ;D!

Am I weird in being totally horrified by this video? I can't find a dog guarding something like that funny...

 I have TRIED to explain to them. Gently. In very small snippets. I carefully, carefully pick my times to say something and make sure I just say a couple of sentences at most with a really simple message. The fact of the matter is that they don't want to train him. They just want to manage him. So it doesn't matter what I say, if someone says something that sounds easier than what I've suggested, then they'll be naturally more attracted to that idea. They need a huge amount of training in their own behaviour if they are ever to going to get anywhere with him. Last time he was here I spent all week teaching him just to pay attention. I thought if I could show them that something could be done and he's not a lost cause that they might be inspired. I spent most of the week priming him just to take treats. The poor dog is scared to take treats because half the time when he helps himself to someone's plate he gets shouted at and it's such a strong punishment that he assumes food and people are by and large not a safe mix. It took me all week, but by the end he was eating every treat in the house and was beginning to get the idea that in our house there are opportunities to earn treats all the time. His owners were like "well, now we know he'll take treats" and I was like "seriously, you have to reward him every time he does something you like" and they were like "well, we tell him he's a good boy, but he doesn't care"... "No, you have to reward him with food. He'll care about that. Good boy doesn't mean anything to him." I may as well not bother. Last I heard he's gone downhill even further and is now on valium. He's an old dog, so possibly some of it is old age, but you have to wonder what kind of life he has if he has to be on valium to cope with it. They will find any excuse for his behaviour. It's not because they are trying to excuse him or absolve themselves of blame. They just don't know how to help him and don't want to have to change the way they do things. It's easier for them to latch onto reasons not to change, and I'm sure they don't even do it consciously. It's very frustrating, but I think this happens to plenty of small dogs. They might even Like that he has issues. Whether it be subconciously or not, some people like to have something to baby and look after. I have a friend who is like that, she likes her dog to misbehave in someways, because then she has the chance to coddle him and tell him hes "been a naughty boy". And in regards to the article. FFS if your dog jumps on you, it doesn't mean "hes the pack leader", it usually means he's been rewarded in some way for jumping and it gets him what he wants. Over use of the pack leader/ dominance stuff is really annoying.

*looks at her woeful attempt at macro photography..... looks at your super sexy awesome macro shots........ * love love LOVE the colour! 3rd is my favourite. Love the composition and really delicate colours. I think the 2nd has more potential, coming across as a bit bland I think maybe due to lack of contrast, nothing really standing out. -
OH and I left our boys sleeping in the backseat for roughly 10 minutes when we where away over Easter. Nice cool day, windows down a little, parked in the shade. When we got back, Ricky the GSD was sitting happily in the driver seat (Nice sand coating everything thanks to the fact we where just at the beach), apparently he decided we took a little too long so was gonna drive himself home :D

I Desperately Need Your Advice!
lovemesideways replied to Leelaa17's topic in General Dog Discussion
I wouldn't go near any DogTech trainer with a 10 foot pole if you paid me millions, and no way in hell would I let them anywhere near my dogs. I'm going to assume that there are going to be Some decent trainers, for such a large franchise. But the "trainers" we have in this area who use the DogTech name are completely horrid. Unless I got a number of recommendations for a specific trainer I wouldn't trust them, simply due to the name. One of my friends has a neighbour who called out DogTech for their small Poodle mix. After DogTechs "training" of screaming at him, throwing things, heavily correcting whenever he is on a lead, amongst a whole bunch of other techniques. He has now gone from barking at the fence and other dogs, to vicious snarling, attacking the fence, literally trying to dig his under it. He's bit his owners repeatedly and they're afraid of him now. Whoever thinks throwing things at a anxious, scared dog is going to fix anything should be smacked over the head. Another lady I know called them out, she is now considering dumping her Samoyed mix at the pound because she's terrified of him after he bit her over a piece of meat. I cannot say anything for your particular trainer, but I personally would wait to see Steve, and unless you have personal recommendations for this trainer, I wouldn't trust them simply because they're DogTech. -
THIS is exactly right. This is what pisses me off more than anything. How will you feel when your perfectly trained dog reacts to something, as every living creature does at some point, and happens to step into the road. Someone is driving past and they hit your dog. Its dead. Your beloved companion you've spent years training, bonding with, looking after, is not DEAD because you're a F***ING IDIOT who walks your dog off leash. Not only is your dog dead, what about the person driving the car who didn't have time to stop? They now have the guilt of killing your dog, because you're too much of a twat to put him on a lead! And you might think I'm being dramatic or over reacting, because obviously your dog is different. Well listen to this, A Sharpei I knew since he was a puppy used to come to my local dog park. My dog Rover grew up playing with Cooper. One day Cooper stopped coming, we didn't know why. My mum ran into Coopers dad a few months later and asked him how was his dog going. His dog was Dead because they always walked him offleash, and he had ran into the road for the first time in 2 years of offleash walking. It just happened to be a highway, he was hit by a car and died instantly. All it takes is 1 chance, the 1 time something goes wrong will be your last.
