  1. Read my way through a bit of this thread, so many lovely puppies! I haven't even picked a breed let alone a breeder yet and I already want my puppy now !
  2. Tried setting up a shot for once (instead of just photographing what comes along) Not sure how it turned out, I really like it.. Thoughts? Edit to add second version with more definition around Ricky (the jumping GSD :D)
  3. Ahh the things dogs do. Why do we love them again ?
  4. In my opinion, I would personally not be touching his bone if he was growling. A growl is good, hes warning you. At the moment its just a warning, but by continuously taking his bone and proving that yes he does need to guard it... could end with a bite I think that this is one of those behaviours that is really best witnessed and advised upon by a professional, rather than just something you read over the internet. Simply because there could be a whole heap of other factors to it that we cannot see, and that you may not even see.
  5.  I'm glad to see I'm not alone. Left the dogs alone today with a bunch of toys and some boxes for them to destroy, come home, toys are not touched, boxes are in shreds. Apparently only things you aren't supposed to destroy are fun
  6. Currently in the running we have Riddick the Labrador! (helped by his buddies Ricky the GSD, and Rover the Lab). Without his usual afternoon walk and training due to me, his idiot owner, having to go out unexpectedly, Riddick decided to througly amuse himself by emptying out the bin. All, over, the house. My favourite part was the shredded chip packet, that he took into his crate. Because all dogs know that the Only way to lick clean a chip packet is whilst in the comfort of ones crate. Closely followed by the Ice-cream container that was totally spotless on the inside, and all 3 dogs smell of ice-cream. Yummmmm! Any contenders :D?
  7. I don't see anything wrong with having a colour preference, as long as that preference doesn't compromise your choice of puppy when choosing one that suits your home.(Eg, picking the energetic black dog because you wanted black, as opposed to the calm yellow dog that is much better suited to your family) I prefer a black lab, but if a breeder was to say to me "this boy is yellow, but he is exceptional and will fit you perfectly" I wouldn't say no, and I wouldn't love the dog any less because of its colour.
  8. As a last resort maybe not as a first. I guess it depends on what you have available to you at the time to try and break up the fight and save your dog. This is true, but when a dog is on the throat of another dog. Especially something that would be as powerful as a boxer x pitbull. I think the situation is about as serious as it can get. I would say so, considering the owner knew they would attack the other dog.
  9. Maybe I'm harsh but I would considering shooting a dog who was literally latched onto the throat of my dog fair.
  10. http://www.dolforums.com.au/topic/197754-name-some-dog-myths/page__p__4587036__fromsearch__1#entry4587036 Here ya go. 18 pages of myths Some of the best/worst/funniest "If a dog wags his tail, he’s happy A wellness indicator in a dog is how dry/wet hot/cold their nose is. Feeding a dog raw meat will give it the taste of blood and make it want to hunt & kill ( Love this one) "Soft drink bottles full of water will stop dogs peeing on your garden." Because the dog will know it's fresh water and so won't pee or poop there or Because dog's can't see clear things, so they think the water is suspended in the air, and get scared. The bull breed "lock jaw" myth! GSD's, Rotties, Pittbulls have been known to turn on their owners due to a chemical imbalance in their brain, If you hold a pug upside down their eyes will pop out. If you let your dog take a tug toy from you - you will lose alpha / leader status in that dog's eyes. (even if the dog brings it straight back?) or If you play tug with a dog - you encourage aggression and dominance behaviour in the dog. Apparently the Stafford's skull needs to "be" split.....eg, you split its skull yourself.....or it can die as the brain grows too large for the skull. And then there are all these which are just so random that maybe I should add them too. To do with Looks If the roof of a dogs mouth is black or has black markings means he/she is stupid. OR I have heard that if the roof of the mouth is black it means they are a pure breed OR if your dog has pigmentation in their mouth it means they will become aggressive. OR the black roof of mouth meant the dog was really smart Don't trust a dog with orange eyebrows. Only dogs with three hairs growing out of the freckle under their chin are any good as pets. Dogs with light or yellow eyes are evil. Any dog with wrinkles on it's forehead will attack you "
  11. I did a thread on this a while ago. Dog myths.. will see if I can dig it up
  12. I don't think you should tell people, now I have even less chance of winning!
  13. That's a pretty powerful dog. Trying to justify it with stating the size of the dog doesn't make sense to me.It's not your concern why they had their Police Dog with them....a Police Dog is a Police Officer. I don't think this is correct. My understanding is that a service dog is normally considered to be equipment, same as a gun, taser, pepper spray etc. Disabled persons' assistance dogs are legally medical appliances, not humans. Dogs are territorial by nature and it would be normal for many dogs to challenge another dog coming onto their territory. They do not have the wit to discern the difference between a police dog and an agressive stray. All dogs are not territorial by nature, and there is a large difference between barking to say "Hey this is my space" or trying to drive off another dog, than going to kill another dog that is on your front lawn. I hardly think its at all in any way normal for a dog to try and kill another dog who is on leash and under very effective control. They where out the front of the house, what if someone just happened to walk down that street with their dog? Is it "normal" and ok if their dog gets killed because these other dogs are just territorial? The police where called because there where people fighting, in my understanding they often send K9 officers to these sort of disturbances because they break up a hell of a lot quicker with a dog around? (I could be wrong here). The Boxer X connected with the police dogs throat (where he has puncture marks), he was shot in the head and died instantly. Seems fair enough to me.
  14. LOL reckon they would give the Mal a run for her money :p!
  15. I adore Malinois <3 <3 <3! But I have 99.9% sure they would just be way to much dog for me! Are the show lines any different to the WL? They are just beautiful dogs, and the way they move brilliant to watch.
  16. Wooooooow you can't help yourself can you? Ok fine. Assumption 1 I have no knowledge of dog sports and never had anything to do with them Ever. I have been training dogs in Obedience for over 4 years. Training my current boy in formal obedience since the day I got him, and whilst I have not competed officially, due to the fact I will not put myself and a dog into the ring until we're 120% ready, I have done many mock trials myself. Been to trials and helped assist during trials. I wouldn't call myself a great trainer, I would hesitate to call myself even a good trainer, but my dogs are exceptionally well behaved. A fact which is commented often by the people who meet them, and considering I trained them myself, I would say I can take credit for that. They didn't magically come trained. I am also friends with a number of people who compete in dog sports, and have been to dozens of trials, competitions, exhibitions etc in a wide range of activities. I have helped trained and handled friends dogs in agility, as well as assisted at the local club. The reason I asked about starting agility is because I have never trained a dog in agility from foundation upwards, and was hoping for some good tips on where to start. I'm sure I could list a lot more things I have done regarding dog related activities/events, using fancy training terms and big words, but I hardly think its necessary. Not sure if that "qualifys" me to have been "doing dog sports" for long enough in your eyes, but quite frankly I don't actually care Assumption 2 I have 2 young dogs. I actually own 1 Labrador, and am looking after my parents dog Rover.(see the signature.) They have been setting themselves up overseas so he has been with me, but he will be going to live with them within the next 3 months, so I will only have 1 dog again. Riddick does indeed benefit a lot from all the training we do (clicker training, games, formal OB training, classes, events, competitions to name a few..) thanks for mentioning The GSD, is my BFs dog. Hes not mine to train or compete with. Assumption 3 I have put no thought into my decision. Considering this is a thread for RESEARCH................... Where did I even say I was getting a new dog soon? Its a thread asking people for their ideas on breeds that might suit the situation I described, so I can RESEARCH them. (Using capitals so hopefully you don't miss out on the obvious, Again.) In fact I mentioned a number of times how it was about the research for me, (I'll save you the quotes, surely you can go have a look for youself ) Assumption 4 (this is probably me going out on a limb, but oh well) I am apparently a animal hoarder who collects dogs until she finds the perfect one Cause I'm obviously one of those people who just buys and buys till they get that super clever pre-trained dog My huuuge number of dogs that I own. How many was that again? Oh yeah, 1. I waited 3 years and went through quite a long and emotional journey before I got Riddick. Obviously someone who just buys whatever dog hey ;) Assumption 5 I will dump my dogs if I cannot find a rental As truly touching as your concern is, I have a have large number of options regarding where I can live if for some reason the rental I currently have (with its long lease and great relationship I have with the landlords) falls through, and I am unable to find a new rental with 2 dogs (though I managed to find this one in under a week..). So thank you for your concern, but I would do anything before I gave up my dogs. And some other tidbits, As far as I know (I'm sure you'll correct me if I'm wrong), we don't "need" to own dogs. We want dogs and their companionship, therefore we own them. So why the Want to buy another dog now? Well firstly I'm not getting another dog right now, I'm RESEARCHing breeds (again with the capitals) I have the time, space and money. Rover will be gone, so I also want a companion for Riddick. Again I could go on with reason upon reason, but really its none of your business. I want another dog because I want another dog. End of story. Good thing I only have 2 dogs then (soon to be one dog.) And I can't understand nuclear psychics, or why you won't just let this thread stay on topic and stop responding? Another mystery of the universe I suppose. Love to know where I was extremely rude? Was it that off hand remark about stupid comments? Sorry if anyone took that to heart, but in my own personal opinion, making massive assumptions based on nothing over and over again is stupid. And as far as unwillingness goes, the only thing anyone asked as far as I saw, was you making a comment about where I was with Riddick regarding agility. Which you obviously knew the answer to from going through my posts? And I ignored, because I didn't feel a reply would assist me in the purpose of this thread. Which is, once again, to RESEARCH (more capitals) dog breeds that are suited to dog sports.
  17. I didn't start a thread on why I want another dog, I started one for suggestions on dog breeds to research. Maybe you should try reading the original post again? Here I'll help Yes. Unless you explain your situation with dog sports currently, it's hard to suggest which breed (if any) may fit you best. Woofen's post explained it well. I'm getting another dog, because I want another dog. Regardless of what I do end up doing with that dog, whether it be a sports dog or a simple pet who knows a lot of funky tricks, I'm getting another dog. I'm not getting a dog that is suitable to dog sports because my current dog isn't, or because I'm not going to train my current dog and want to trade him for something "better". I'm getting one that's suited to sports because I want and am getting another dog, and I will be doing training and possibly competing with it. and I would like this thread to stay on topic, since other than you quite a few people didn't seem to have a problem with being helpful and suggesting breeds for me to research based on the information I provided. If you feel the need to list the reasons based on your continued assumptions as to why I should not get another dog, feel free to message me or start your own thread.
  18. I didn't start a thread on why I want another dog, I started one for suggestions on dog breeds to research. Maybe you should try reading the original post again? Here I'll help
  19. Your response about kelpies was really helpful (And I love seeing photos/hearing about your guys :D) I Love the look of the Akita, but it is again a breed that is not quite what I'm looking for. I need someone I know to buy one so I can get some akita puppy lovin' That video is hilarious, looks like my sort of speed too. I'm waiting for the day I trip and go flying cause I'm running too fast, knowing me it will be during a competition of some sort and I'll land on my dog The people who posted seem to be under the incorrect impression that I have never trained a dog of any sort, or participated in/competed in any sort of dog sport. And that I own 2 young dogs myself that have not been trained or done any sort of dog sport. So I think the problem is the idea of someone who knows nothing about dogs and training, going and getting another dog "for sport" because they read all about the super cool sounding stuff people do with their dogs and want one of those magical breeds that come pre-trained and able to do all that cool sport stuff. Showing is something I have considered as well. I have quite a few friends who show and Ive really enjoyed the shows Ive been to and participated in. Maybe if the right puppy/line/opportunity shows itself ( not that I need another thing to buy dog stuff for...)
  20. Do you think it is influenced by being on DOL though? Normally people would join their agility club and train their dog and it wouldn't be until they started competing that they decided they wanted a more 'competitive' breed. By that time they would probably have seen all these 'competitive' dogs train or compete. But here they see the pictures, video's etc of these breeds competing and decide that is the best way to be competitive? Rather than how much it just comes down to training- plenty of the 'competitive' breeds fail to make it to competition because they are trained incorrectly..... I am not saying this is the case with the OP- there have been plenty of similar threads in the past few month. Where someone has got a lovely pet and decided that they need a more competitive animal before they even know the limitations of their current dog- be it in agility, the show ring or flyball? Asking what is the right breed for them when that is something that should evolve from what you learn from your first dog. Lists are made from the dogs they see in the ring, not based on dogs they actually want to live or train and in some cases I have just despaired at how little people have understood about the dogs on their list.... Perhaps it was a little OT Not talking about you directly Woofen. You actually know me IRL so you don't count, I think you even know where I live! but I would appreciate it if we can keep the thread on topic please.
  21. Wow ok, for everyone making assumptions about me, my dogs and my life based on small snippets you read on DOL, my personal reasons for getting another dog are really none of your business. I asked for breed suggestions, not stupid comments based on rather massively incorrect assumptions about me. For everyone else who have been making really helpful comments regarding the actual purpose of the thread, thank you I am reading everything and you've given me a lot of ideas
  22. "Not a great deal of grooming" is probably still going to be too much grooming. Belgians are beautiful though, but just too much coat for me! Thats awesome. I love how they both sort of came to you at the right time! Hopefully something similar is going to happen to me with all the research and going along to shows/trials I'm doing :D Lovely breed, but yep, too much coat work!
  23. Love all the photos. Always love hearing about what your 2 get up to :D. I can see that they would in theory fit It's always consensual eating, though ... It looked consensual Great advice, and I agree with Vickie also. Its all in the research for me at the moment. Picking a breed is hard enough when theres so may choices, and then finding the right fit within that breed makes it even harder Not being a party pooper, that is a valid point! But the rental is no issue, I have thought very long and carefully about this.
  24. I would be interested to hear more about Tollers also! They are one of those breeds I have heard of but don't know anything about! Tollers would suit most of your requirements though I was wary about recommending due them needing to put up with body slamming. My guys do it too each other and play rough enough that it sounds like they are killing each other but they are a smaller breed and wouldn't take getting body slammed by a GSD too well. What is the GSD like with smaller dogs? Does he still hit them as hard as he does your Lab? I am talking about mine though, I am sure there are some out there giving their all back to bigger dogs. Apart from that, they are very owner focused. I have two here who are so intent on me that I've had obedience competitors say they wish their dogs were like that....and I haven't even trained them to pay attention. They are an active breed mentally and physically but mine are more than happy to sleep the day away if it's raining/cold but if you mention going somewhere they are by your side before you know it! :p They will wait quietly in the car or their crate while I am training one of the others and then be raring to go once I ask them, well except the puppy who will scream at being left out but we are working on that! They do drop coat a bit but have a very easy care coat, a once a week brush will keep their coat in good shape In regards to being outgoing and confident, I would be meeting the parents first preferably not in a home environment. There are a few Tollers that are pretty nervy but picking a confident puppy and then socialising would ensure a confident adult. That being said, if you tell the breeder you want to compete in dog sports then you should be given an outgoing confident puppy. Both the GSD and the Lab will play alot more gently with other dogs (and they do play gently with eachother when not outside, ), but picking a breed whos play style is going to slot into what already goes on in my house seems more fitting than choosing a breed where they just obviously do not suit. They sound like a great breed, what are the differences between them and say, a Border collie, or a australian shepherd?
