  1. Video I made on how to do this
  2. Dont worry we have all been there! Your baby will be fine
  3. Sounds great. Be sure to come back on here if you have any issues! Best to sort these sort of things out while they're young and not set in there ways!
  4. http://www.compliantk9.com/rawImages/CK9%20Resource%20Guarding%20v1.pdf Just found this, seems like a pretty good explanation on resource guarding. Have a read through that too
  5. How long have you had him for exactly? He is a new puppy in a new environment you have to remember. Start with TIT immediately. Don't be taking his food off him or switching the bowls, this could make him anxious. Ie. You're doing what he is afraid of, taking his resource away. Something I would do would be give him something pretty low value like biscuits, and whenever you approach, walk past in any way, drop a piece of higher value food next to him and the bowl. So get some mince, or chicken wings cut up, Pieces of raw meat that are much higher value and more delicious that biscuits. This is saying, Hey every time mum walks past, come near me, I get MORE food, and its ever better!
  6. PLEASE DEAR GOD DO NOT DO THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! What horrible advice. You do not want to tell him off for growling, hes warning you atm with growling and snapping, you start telling him off at the wrong moment for growling and snapping, he may stop growling because hes afraid to, but that just means he will skip this step and go straight to biting you outright. This is NOT about being the boss, hes a 8 week old puppy FFS, do you think he gives a crap about "dominance"?
  7. From what you said here. yes you can. When are you planning on going? If it in sync with one of mine, I can help you with the bits and pieces. Just send me a PM or email and we can go from there. Nothing can happen dodgey from the Australian end as AQIS oversee anything that leaves Australia anyway. There is actually very little the transport companies do ex Australia, apart from act as a go between for AQIS and the exporter. So dont worry about leaving Australia, that never is a problem. Misquoted here. Hopefully that explains it
  8. Hey, what? I dont get what you mean. Shit a brick last time I spend two hours looking stuff up for someone. nononono! I meant that she quoted something YOU said as something I had said. As in I wouldn't do it without a proper transport company helping me. I appreciate the help! Really I do! :o
  9. I am going with Rover because its way more expensive and confusing to try and send them on there own. And no way would I do that! I'm organising things and getting more information because they have been given nothing helpful over there and don't have the contacts I have here in Australia.
  10. Just jump on any of the shanghai expat websites, LMSW. Heaps of stuff on there but I just did a quick skim through for you. I think Lilli's advice is the best - get lots of info from the people on the China side to make your entry smooth. Once again I think Lilli nailed it - make sure it's all what the Chinese authorities need as far as paperwork getting Rover's entry approved, and AQIS for paperwork getting Rover's exit done. Out of curiosity, what's the conflicting info you and your parents have been given? It might help someone else down the track to know what sort of bureaucratic nightmare they might be facing like you are now First it was the rabies shot, AQIS said it only needs to be a week before going. China said over a month at least. Then Quarantine, first it was a month quarantine on arrival in china, then got told by people here that there was none at all, then told 7 days minimum but chinese side of things. Heard a lot of conflicting stories about what the quaratine situation was like over there, from its a basic kennel to its a horrible hole in the ground where the dogs don't get fed. Been told the key is just to bribe people, then told dont even think about bribing anyone because they are cutting down on that in shanghai and if you're caught they'll confiscate your dog. List goes on! Basically everything anyone has said has been repeated differently by someone else. No it's not hearsay and it's not guessing Jet Pets, Dogtainers and their Oz staff don't know and do not have the access of a local agent. China is one of the countries where the Australian way is a hindrance not a help. Go local, stick with the can-do know how Yes they do. JetPets have an affiliate agency in China that they deal with for dogs travelling into China. I have dealt with JetPets a lot and they deal with their Chinese contacts a lot. It's easier and safer to get a company like JetPets to arrange the travel from here. Do you have a actual contact you could name for me so that I can speak to them directly? No they will speak to their contact in China, but you will pay Aust. Dogtainers/Jet Pets for the privilege. And because you are going the Australian way, everything will take longer and be more bureaucratic. Probably you will fill more forms in also. Seriously just contact someone in Shanghai. Do you have any names / contacts for agents in China? No not yet! I have been recommended a company called Globypet, but have to wait for mum to get in contact with them as I can't call them from here. Also world pet transport or something like that, another chinese based company. What month are you looking at going? Go to the Air China website and click on one way, depart SYD arrive SHANGHAI direct flight. yes you can. I never actually said I wanted to do it on my own, that was from something Raz said. But I really seriously appreciate any help! Its very confusing when you have never exported a animal so I will send you a PM. I'm going beginning of September we think.

  12. Thanks everyone for all the info! Its really helpful and I'm passing it all along to my parents as we try to sort this situation out! I have had a look on the Air China website and it seems they only fly direct to Beijing? You are the second person to say they fly direct to shanghai so hopefully I am missing something! Do you know this for sure? The only flight we have found that goes direct to china is through Qantas, and their flight arrives late at night so there is the added worry of all the quarantine staff in China will have gone home by then! Apparently you can "convince" them to stay with extra money, but to idea how to go about that. When I spoke to Dogtainer, whilst being very helpful about everything they have said that the second the plane hits Chinese soil its no longer their responsibility and they basically have nothing to do with it on that end. They can however contact a local agent and then you work togethor from there. Im not sure if that would be better than using a company based in China? (worried that they will be dodgy on this end!) I will send these details across to mum! Awesome thanks, there is a lot of these companies it seems, the problem is finding one that is professional on both ends! Currently making a list. No it's not hearsay and it's not guessing Jet Pets, Dogtainers and their Oz staff don't know and do not have the access of a local agent. China is one of the countries where the Australian way is a hindrance not a help. Go local, stick with the can-do know how Im finding this to be true, the australian transport companies dont have any sort of control once the dog actually gets to china, so whilst they may be fantastic on this end, I'm a lot more worried about what will happen on that end.
  13. Wish I saw this sooner! had no idea it was on
  14. Its a bit hard to relax when I keep getting told a lot of horrible things. Trying to though! We haven't yet got a proper agent in China, looking for one that comes recommended. Seems so far they have thought mum looked like a easy target to get some extra cash and shes been quoted a lot of bullshit. So looking for a company this end who has actually dealt with someone that end. I don't know anything about a import permit? Just been told that the pet relocation company will waive the need for a residence visa apparently. I think the airline is Qantas as they're the only one with direct flights to shanghai, everyone else you have to go through hongkong. Thats the other issue, the flights arrive fairly late and we've been told that if you arrive past a certain time, the quarantine guys have all gone home so the dog gets stuck in the crate with baggage for another 10 hours or something because you aren't allowed to bring them out without quarantine and customs dealing with it. and my parents have a house there, so no hotel. So they say someone from my dads company will be dealing with my visa and everything. Not sure if they'll be helping me clear customs. Yeah, all very confusing! Thanks :)me too!
  15. What is the point of this post exactly? To try and freak me out? Rover is going to China, I don't have a choice as he is not my dog! Saying things like hes going to die or get eaten are just horrible. They do NOT eat dogs in Shanghai, I cannot say anything for some of the rural villages, but it is not common practice to eat dogs in China. There are a lot of pet dogs in Shanghai, parents have been there about 3 months and seen many dogs. Its becoming more popular as time goes by. Mum is going to be joining a upcoming pets as therapy group that has started there. And Yes that's correct regarding the quarantine, 6 months in a approved country before then coming back here for further quarantine. But like I said, they won't be bring him back as they are not returning. I'm travelling with him. Thanks for the link! Will add it to the information I have sent across already.
  16. One way trip They aren't coming back for a very long time otherwise Rover would be staying here with me as the quarantine to return is just crazy.
  17. All this this great info. Thankyou! Really helps. I'll be printing it out if anyone has links to studies too please post them.
  18. No it wasn't redirected aggression, the dog was not aggressing, just wanting to go for a walk, when the mild correction was applied the dog swung around and bit him. I believe the dog was worried. The dog was far less stimulated than I had seen on many occasions before and after (including aggression) that didn't end with the owner copping a bite after him giving a correction. Unless I'm somehow reading this wrong, how is a dog biting someone NOT aggression?
  19. Will PM Wayrod and give Jetpets and Dogtainers a call tomorrow! Ive spoken to AQIS already, and the information they have is different to what the chinese goverment told my parents on their end. Its all very confusing!
  20. Tried one on myself, as hard as I could yank it, and I DO NOT support any ban. The skin and muscle structure we have for our necks is a lot different to the sort of skin around a dogs neck. I'll happily shake my dog around during play by scruffing him on and around his neck, I certainly would never do something like that to a person because it could damage them a lot easier.
  21. I am going to be flying to China with my parents dog Rover in September, but on the chinese side of things my parents have hit a few snags and are confused. Whether or not I need a specific type of visa to bring him with me is the main one currently. has anyone ever flown a dog to China? Or knows where I can get 100% ACCURATE information. So far the Chinese have said something different to what the australian quarantine people have said every time. Please PM! Thanks
  22. So I am a believer in never feeding a dog cooked bones, always told they will splinter and saw it myself when our family cat stole a cooked chicken bone out of the bin and the splintered bone got caught inside his jaw I got it out and he wasn't harmed (couple nasty scratches for me) BUT my partner does not believe this. His family have had GSDs for years, and always fed them scraps and cooked bones and "they where always fine!" Now he won't feed any of our dogs cooked bones, I've talked to him about it and told him all the risks but I know he still thinks that because his previous family dogs where fine, it must be ok. He won't feed any of our dogs cooked bones, but if he takes Ricky for a visit to his parents house, I know he still gets given the occasional cooked bone there. They even save their cooked bones and put them in a baggy to give to us every week or 2. Even after me telling them I will never give my dogs cooked bones and they just go into the bin. So some actual facts, horror stories, real information on why this is a bad thing would be much appreciated.
  23. I feel like I remember a thread like that. Was it this one: http://www.dolforums.com.au/topic/139457-are-prong-colars-illegal-to-sell-in-nsw/page__p__2787547__hl__%2Bimport+%2Bprong+%2Bcollars__fromsearch__1#entry2787547 No two ways to interpret that... There are always going to be conflicts in interest between welfare and control/safety, I think. Take horse bits, for example. LOL cause K9: It is a Federal offence if you import restricted goods without a permit, even in parts. is Obviously the same as telling someone how to import a prong collar in parts, and put it togethor, and use it  Thanks for the link Corvus.
  24. Yay for prong collars I would go so far as to say that in a lot of cases involving aggression, a simple flat collar is going to be MUCH more painful and damaging than a prong collar. Dog lunging against a flat collar repeatedly is going to cause a hell of a lot more damage to itself and its handler than one lunge and self correction (which are NOT painful, uncomfortable yes but not painful) on a properly fitted prong collar. Edit to add: Not sure if this is gonna be OT or not, but something people forget to think about it its not just about the dog, its about the handler and their abilities too.
