  1. Rubbish! Its the dog within the coat, breed, and the body that is of importance along with confidence that you give the situation.
  2. Can't you play with the baby in another room if you must use the floor???. It's not a bad dog because it jumped over the baby and takes some compromise to include both dogs and small children in the household. You can't expect a dog to automatically understand how it needs to behave around children and I would suggest to have a trainer assess the situation with the dog first before you make a decision to send him back. It's a amazing how some good training can alter a dog's behaviour and provide you with control. The dog didn't cause the baby harm, you caused that yourself I am sorry to say and the dog is not to blame for the incident. A smaller dog in the same situation that couldn't jump as well could poke the baby in the eye etc etc. Any dog can cause a baby harm if the baby is put in a vulnerable position in the dog's presence. Only you can control that scenario effectively. If you must use the floor? Many dogs are fine sharing floor space. All 4 of mine have been, A Goldie, a Belgian Shepherd, a Whippet and a White GSD. Some dogs are too flighty and unpredictable. The floor sharing is supervised, but that doesnt stop a flighty overly excitable dog from causing damage. The ages of the dogs in this situation were Belgian 6yrs, Goldie 10 years, Whippet 5.5 months, WGSD 12 months. Whats the point in having a nutbag dog locked a way from your life, or a baby locked away from a nutbag? Nutbag will be perfectly suited to someone else.
  3. That's a bit rude, a full on teenage Wei is not for everyone. Finding the dog that is suitable is all that is needed. I dont know about that... I'd probably be pretty defensive if it was my breed too. The dog is only behaving exactly the way you would expect a dog of that breed and age to act. The OP made a mistake in choosing a Wei (or any large breed, high energy dog) if she cannot/does not want to deal with that kind of behaviour. But no point in flaming now, the deed is done, she is returning the dog and I think she has learnt her lesson too. I disagree, just because one individual of a breed does not suit a situation does not mean the OP shouldn't have a dog. This dog also sounds as if it has not had a lot of groundwork put into it before the OP took it on, if it had it could well have been much more suitable. head to the wei forum & read there A wei might not be the right dog for this person, but it doesn't mean they shouldn't own any dog. I couldn't handle a wei but have two well loved mini schnauzers. Also, rescues have settling in periods for a reason. During that time it is perfectly acceptable - even encouraged - that if someone isn't happy with the dog they return them. It isn't rehoming the dog - it is simply not going through with the adoption. Even if it was rehoming, there would not be anything wrong with it if the dog posed a risk to very young kids. The dog would be perfect for someone elses situation. If you put the right amount of effort in to rehoming, thats one less dog in a shelter and someone else in the right envionment gets themselves a perfect dog for their situation. Im not advocating for everyone to rehome their dogs because its 'too hard', just situations that are 'at risk'. In my opinion its the best outcome for all involved if you go about it the right way.
  4. Every dog has its own characteristics within the standard breed temperament. My White GSD was older pup, but I knew her history. She is a very placid bombproof girl who can manage excitable or unpredictable situations well. If I'd known she was an over the top highly strung girl then I would have waited for something more suitable. Rescues can be unknown quantities. That being said, another dog of the same breed and age with unknown history could have been perfect. Its just the luck of the draw, then the ability to mould the dog to its environment without stress on both parts. Years ago, I returned a rescue that I was assured would suit my 'horsey' lifestyle. It didn't, my horse hated that particular dog and there wasnt time or an effective way of managing the situation as I didnt see the point in having a dog who would be left at home majority of the time. I knew he would have been perfect for someone else, it broke my heart at the time but then decided to get a pup and that worked a lot better. every dog is different as with every situation it enters in to. Your a good person to put the dogs needs ahead of yours and not shut it away from your life. I am a mum of 3 very young kids and I can fully relate to what you are saying. Dont discount the breed because of that dogs individuals characteristics. All dogs are different. I had 2 Rottweilers at my daughters 4th birthday and a whole class of kinder kids! Something perfect will come up and fill that hole SOON. Maybe look up some breeders who have older pups or dogs that have come from families. There are plenty of them around that need a good family home.
  5. :D wow, hes beautiful. Ivy wont know herself!!
  6. Maybe go a mature dog. Soooooooooo much easier and less stressful. Kids seem to show a great deal more respect too. I was very lucky with my older pup with kids but the whippet drove us in sane as a young pup.
  7. Who are you smooth? Very fresh and new?
  8. There are heaps of Whippets in my area, usually attached to a toddler. That was my first choice in dog after my Belgian passed on. I have a Whippet and a White GSD I have a 9 week old baby, a 2 year old a and a 4 and a half year old. Couldnt be a better mix. My dogs are mainly indoors, crate trained, but now not crated indoors at all. They spend a good part of the day outside playing with the kids on the trampoline or in the cubby making mud pies.
  9. Would you be better off doing made to order? I dont think of ever seen an adult wearing a T with a dog photo on front? Maybe they do, just havent seen it?
  10. Yes I to have whippets desexed at around $120 -$150 each. ......and yes to the questions that are going to follow. The vet does do blood tests, give pain relief, has modern equipment, uses proper anaesthetic techniques (I won't use a vet that uses benzo's with sighthounds), has a return check up in a week plus is the only reproductive specialist in the state. Be interesting to know that, as with other services, if demographics plays a part with fees. ie: richer areas v's working class areas and prices. I think ACA did a segment on this a few weeks back. Is a very pricey area. They just want dogs desexed to stop unwanted pups so that encourages people to do the right thing. This price includes everything except pre anasthetic testing. The neighbouring clinics are at least $100 more
  11. Whippet cost me $160, Shepherd $180-$200 at my clinic
  12. onions are poison to dogs, most gravys contain onion powder. Also even if it doesnt say MSG, Hydrolysed vegie protein is also MSG, but in a natural form.

  14. And this is what happens to a depressed White, feeling like a social outcast
  15. The addiction worsens when you can view Off Topic. Some amazing stuff happens in there. Be nice to have a few newbies arrive, the old mob seem to have left the building.
  16. I hate the sale of live animals in pet shops and dont support puppy farms, but how the hell would registered breeders support the demand for dogs in todays society? Become puppy farms themselves? Whats the solution?
  17. Cancers as you probably know can make dogs act a little differently than they normally would. Other dogs who are healthy and are not aggro can become a little bit that way, and dogs who have cancer can act up in defence. Unfortunately I saw it all when my boy had hermangiosarcoma. I know you have delt with all sorts Woofter and will be the best person for the job Best to email or ring Julie. Still dont think she accepts PMs
  18. MadWoofter has offered to foster and is in Sydney, she has offered to pick up the boy also. Woofter is a legend and is a very experienced foster carer. Go to OT Steve. http://www.dolforums.com.au/index.php?s=&a...t&p=4450626
  19. donation made, if dog can come to melb I will do it
  20. I never started rumours about Myzchev and her dogs. Another breeder over East told me incorrect information and a friend who has Belgians cleared this up for me. I never said anything about this on DOL, never! While we're all at it .. anyone else want to have a go at me? Feel free, I'm already feeling very low so going a little more low can't hurt. I'm feeling pretty darn useless and I'm sorry for all the shit I've stirred up. I know I'm very much hated around here, so I'm going to leave Dol. Good luck to all and feel free to kick dirt at me if you ever see me in the streets. By the sounds of it, I deserve it. Enough with the sympathy seeking, own your mistake and leave it at that, then the others who are bagging you will come undone in their own time. May I add that there are some excellent Belgian Breeders (including yours BB) in the East who don't gossip. Dont throw them in the same basket as the person who caused trouble. Your Breeder is an excellent example of a good ethical breeder who is always open to communication and DOES NOT bad mouth other breeders or listen to bullshit about prospective puppy buyers. She is having a bad enough time at the moment due to the sudden death of her 'Buddy' without being implicated in a gossip ring due to poor wording such as "I never started rumours about Myzchev and her dogs. Another breeder over East told me incorrect information" For those who think BB is a fruitloop and wouldnt sell her a pup, thats bullshit. BB stayed here for over a week with little Ivy. I wont say any more than BB has publicly said about herself, that being, she has confidence and communication issues with new people as MANY 'doggy obsessed' people do. They more often than not make excellent dog owners, but perhaps not the best communicators with people. Glad its sorting itself out. We all live and learn, but some take a hell of a lot longer than others.
