Poor kids I know what it is like. I took my girls to a few dog shows, they are a lot yonger than yours but it got them excited again. Best of luck with it, I really feel for you. COuld you get to a flyball competion, kids love to watch things like that, or agility? I know quite a few rescue / adopted older dogs that do sports. Maybe you could visit a shelter with them? Might lift their spirits a little.

K9 Behaviour Specialist Required In Melbourne For Rescue
~Shepherd~ replied to ~Shepherd~'s topic in General Dog Discussion
Might be easier if I called you if thats ok, do you recall the cost of the op? The owner gave us all the information, apparently the training acadamey that went bust mentioned the dominance problem. The owner is a really lovey person but unfortunately has to go OS in less than a month. Are you still Geelong way? -
Our White Shepherd rescue group is seeking the services of a K9 Behaviour Specialist to assist us in working with a new surrender. We need the service by mid next week and will require ongoing support and advice for this particular dog in one of our group members home. The dog will be in Bundoora and we need to have the assessment done in the temporary home and possibly support through the transition to the new home. The dog has some dominance issues that need to be assessed and worked with. Just wondering also if Lort Smith would be the least expensive option for a desexing operation requiring the removal of undescended testes. Our last rescue was a very expensive boy so we dont have a mountain of money to spend but he was well worth it. Thanks in advance. ETA we are also looking for Shepherd Savvy Foster Carers.

Touchy Subject But Need Advice Or Help.
~Shepherd~ replied to Danielle's topic in General Dog Discussion
This has to be one of the most extraordinary assumptions ever . How on earth can you say something like that when you have absolutely no idea. The lady who has the dog now didn't "make a reasonable assessment". No one would take a dog if it attacked them. That is what I am saying. -

How does a pup being intimidated by other dogs (if true) explain it running from people and biting any human who approaches it (if true)? In the end we are both speculating. Someone who knows their arse from their elbow in terms of dog behaviour needs to see this dog but frankly I don't think that's going to happen. Perhaps she doesnt have the $300 floating around in her biscuit tin to hand over to have it assessed. She didnt get to meet the dog prior to it being dropped off at her place, the person who will be taking the dog will make a reasonable assessment based on whether their extremities are still in tact by the end of the conversation. Correct. But "dozens" recommended its owner have it assesssed by a professional so that its prospects for rehabilitation could be assessed. The advice was not as simple as PTS and a lot of folk noted that there was a young child in the house. The OP posted seeking help. Gutsy call by someone who hasn't met the dog either Chewy. You have no more knowledge of what's motivating this dog's aggression than the next person. Without professional assessment and help this dog might well be an accident waiting to happen. No one knows and that's the whole point. The woman said in her ad her dogs were causing it grief PF, that was not an assumption. from the ad. "She's just not suited to our home and I don't want to scare her anymore with our other 4 dogs.. " Danielle started the thread with good intention to help her friend but should have nailed it when the assumptions started flooding in. I wouldnt be dumping a friend over a dog I hadnt met. It was a play on words Earthdog, tasty ones. THis dog has been read its death sentence by the OP and dozens of others. Nobody has met it, the owner cant even tell us what the problem is, and is obviously in the dark about the DOL consult and the monster she has become. -

Why on earth would the mother put her child at risk. The dog is obviously locked away from the existing dogs and the family. If only people would put their concerns, passion and efforts in to the rescue forum rather than carrying on like a pack of vicious red kelpies. Imagine what could have been achieved today. -

Danielle, what mass hysteria over a dog you havent met. Your friend now looks like the worlds biggest arse hole and hundreds of obsessed dog people who are very angry now have her number. Not one person here has met the dog. The dog is obviously scared shitless and is trapped in an environment where it is totally threatend. I wouldnt mind ringing her myself and alerting her to your thread so she can speak for herself. SHe may be in the wrong, but who knows for sure. -
Must be. I'll have to look up the ingredients I think. Hyperactive and sooky all at the same time.

If I run out of Artemis and have to buy dog roll "Platinum or VIP" I swear Charlie May becomes a massive pain in the arse mood change wise. She bullies the WGSD and bolts at her 100kmph at the park and smacks her around without being overly aggro (if that makes sense). She hangs off me like bad smell and her stealing increases. When I verbally reject her (like piss off) she goes and hangs off the 4 year old. Anyone else have similar mood changes with temporary diet change? I havent check the roll ingredients lately and chucked the rest of the one in the fridge. Im wondering if there are preservatives or something in them? The dogs are with me 24/7 in winter in the lounge so behaviour change is quite obvious. She is desexed and goes months without food change and is very steady and bombproof. She is almost 3.5. Might be better off with a tin of Natures Gift next time. No change in the Sheppie.

New Puppy With Young Child? Am I Asking For Trouble?
~Shepherd~ replied to vernie's topic in General Dog Discussion
my dogs go nuts when the pram comes out and get in to position. I have seen the odd tool tie their leads to the pram though. BIG no no. I used to put 2 leads on Squid, one for the kid to hold and one for me. The dog for some reason behaved even better, obviously predicting the unpredictable child tendencies -

Oh wow! Do it! Both kid and pup will be in heaven. Are you familiar with crate training? If its not up your ally then any type of confinement for dog is fine so he can get some rest and time out. Our Whippet and WGSD are the best thing ever for the kids. 5 months old, 2.5 and 4. I wouldnt have it other way. Would love to see pictures when it happens. I'm too excited for you -
Saggitarians shop is awsome. Its 4 paws and more maybe?. I think there are 2 of them now. Also the pet BAth Shop in Diamond Creek is the best, they sell my Artemis and beautiful statues, collars leads and coats. They have a DIY path and are all breed groomers too.

Our own GSD's 4 EVER makes them and she is in Victoria. I cant recommed them highly enough. They are perfect to go in your pocket as they are dry, and small enough to take lots and fit between your fingers for training. http://www.happypawstreats.com.au/home.cfm

well done. What a fantastic effort

You are an amazing selfless person. Well done.

Crap Kirty, What a sh!thead of an animal. I have a crate you can use if you need it. I couldnt deal with behaviour like that, just shows your strength of character and loyalty pursuing a pet dog who can sometimes exhibit extremely destructive behaviour especially with kids in the mix. Your a good woman and I'm really sorry about your stuff. I'd like to help you replace some things for your rescue you work so hard at. What was destroyed and what do you need?
-
SO very sorry. RIP dear Leo . I really hope you will be ok.

Most dogs would be in their element with a pack like that, and that environment. I would avoid hound types in a rural environment off lead though. Long coats are a PITA out in paddocks and the bush with burrs and things attaching to coats.

Women Injured And Animals Killed In Overnight Fires (caboolture Qld)
~Shepherd~ replied to Boronia's topic in In The News
Just had a chat with someone close to Jed and she has suggested we hold off for now as there is no where to put any of this stuff. Unless someone can donate free storage space??? The biggest concern is paying the bills mortgage etc. I didnt want to throw the fundraising out of whack and that can sometimes happen when personal items are requested over monetary donations. I saw this happen a lot down here with the bushfire recovery. Glad everyone is excited about the wish list though. I'm sure it will be required in the near future. -

I'm not shy. Talk to me great, would you like to post a list, perhaps in the fundraising area? The longer the better I think. From Scissors to staplers, sticky tape to irons, plastics to hair dryers, toasters to jerry cans. If people dont want to leave their name perhaps mark it with an x? DVD player, Stereo, choppping boards. There are some excellent mid year sales on atm!! -
That's use to happen when I had my huskies!! But, not too many because one of my husky was a big dog and once the kids saw how big he was, they backed off. I will tell the kid to stop but Emmy is usually trying to run away at this time... I have to sort her out first before dealing with kids. Definately, sounds like you need a few more positive experiences yourself for your own confidence. Can you access kids in a controlled environment? My friends bring their kids around.. and Emmy is totally fine with them. But, only because she got to say hello to them first, and the kids know what to do and not to do. We went through the same thing when I got Charlie... but Charlie loves and adore kids. So even before I say 'let him come say hello to you first'.. he is already in their face and begging for a cuddle. But, yeah, maybe it's my body language I have to look at. I get tense when I see kids when I walk with Emmy and not realising it. Because I see kids walking with Emmy, i just think 'Oh crap'... but when I see kids walking with Charlie.. it's all good. He goes over to say hello first. Perhaps you could source some calm kids at a park with their parent around, ask parent if you could approach kids for a pat. Confidently trot your dog up to the kids have a happy chat to start then encourage them to give the dog a confident solid pat, perhaps finish with a ball chuck? Good luck
