We Need Some More Help Inthe King Lake Area
~Shepherd~ replied to Steve's topic in General Dog Discussion
This is a short term helping hand to get back on top of things. Perhaps they have over commited to a degree, but these are their pets and if people can help the owners keep them whilst they get back on their feet than that is the best option. If it is going to be a long term problem, then the owners may need help to sell or rehome some of their animals to make it more managable. Not fair to splash all the details on a public forum. Who knows, you may find yourself in a similar situation one day and just need a helping hand for the short term to keep your dogs? -
We Need Some More Help Inthe King Lake Area
~Shepherd~ replied to Steve's topic in General Dog Discussion
The counselor is telling us that everyone has moved on and there is very little help left for her clients. Ive no idea how the VCA are placed but I also don't know whether they will help horses etc either. There is HEAPS of feed around Kinglake and surrounds at the moment. Perhaps the horses could be agisted on good pasture locally and agistment costs covered. Most would only charge around $10-$15 per week. THis way it will give a chance for her pasture to have a break before Spring and produce plenty of good feed for the Season. It may cost around $300 per week to hard feed all the animals if they want grain, delivery and specialised foods. They will survive and remain healthy if they have an ongoing hay supply, it may not be up to the standards that enthusiasts may want, but it will maintain the weight and get them through. If the horses are not in work then they will be fine if they are rugged and fed good quality Lucerne and Grass Hay. Unfortunately a lot of people in these areas are in the same boat during Winter and there a still people living in below 0 conditions in caravans up in the hills. Sorry I cant be of any help atm with transport. I hope their situation starts to improve. This site will give you an indication of prices etc. Its the only online store I could find within 45 minutes of Kinglake. http://valleyproduce.com.au/store/index.ph...ex&cPath=37 -
awsome, thats a bargain. Same as Mitre 10 but half the price.

Pet Bath doesnt do kennels but Mitre 10 does. There is a cheepy shop near Mr Rooster that sells large kennels for around $80, plastic. They sell heaps of cheap beds too. I havent bought from them, but a lot of people do. There is a shop called Veronicas Pantry near subway that also sells cheap dog stuff. Its all imported asian stuff. We have a kids fold out sofa for mine and they are mainly inside. The pet bath has a DIY wash and acessories but only stock Artemis. The beds from the cheap places seem fine. I forgot to mention our local Pet store sells good quality items, beds kennels etc and a range of food. I think they are called DC Pet supplies. They are really good and also have a great aquariam.

We only seem to have the super stores around here, we are 10 minutes from you. I always use a mates shop The Pet Bath Shop in Diamond Creek or Mitre 10 DC. I feed Artemis Power and get it at a good price. Look on ebay for a kennel and buy your crate if you are getting one on line.(Deals Direct) or similar. Remember never buy PVC toys as they can be fatal if ingested over a long period as are colured glazed ceramic water holders. Eltham Stockfeeds or Doreen (if they are still there). Diamond Valley Dog Obedience sells leads collars and stuff near cost, and pup through to advanced obedience classes are only $50 for a whole year sundays 9am Poulters Reserve Greensborough There are 2 off lead large ovals in DC also. There is a monthly Dogzonline meet at Kepala Pet Resort you will find info in the social thread. Where is you pup coming from?

The breeder should be matching the pup to the owner as they have seen their behaviour for 8 weeks. Nervy behaviour IMO is genetic or caused from constant abuse. You cant have a dog that lives with you, who can not be around kids. Ever. As for your earlier post, you neverever let kids poke and prod animals, ride them or pull them. You can tell if a child is going to far then you stop them in their tracks. A child under supervision should only get to the touch stage if under supervision. NEVER any further to SEE how the dog reacts. Stupid and irresponsible. Its up to the owner to manage their dogs environment. If you see kids just about to ride or poke. Remove yourself and the dog. Simple.

I feel terrible for the owner. I would rehome the dog with a behavioural assessment, certainly not without one. Not worth it. Kids safety is more important and once the trust has been broken its impossible to get it back. Kids are allowed to be kids and enjoy their family pets, not be permanently separated from them or corrected each time they step foot within 20 meters. Not fair on anyone. As a mother of 3 kids 5 and under, I would find the situation too difficult to manage. The dog may be suited to a home where the behaviour can be modified and manged away from unpredictable actions of children. I have an indoor guardian breed with a bombproof temperament, if it wasn't bomproof, I wouldn't have her here. She is trained daily to maintain her manners. I know other people with guardian breeds who do as I do but sadly the temperaments have been the cause of the problem, not the environment. Good luck and I hope you get the help you need before it turns your life upside down.

Crate Training For An Entire Bitch
~Shepherd~ replied to lopolla's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
You're meaning to just have her crated for short periods through the day during her seasons, aren't you? she does mean that, she can reply herself to fill you in further. Her pup is beautifully trained and cared for, I can assure you of that :D She is just preparing for uni days if her housemates are not home. -
Those hairies are so lucky to have found you along with all the other fluffagumps that have been given a second chance due to your loving foster home. You are ace Woofter, Happy Anniversary furies.

what a ridiculous thing to say. They are paying for a dog? They were hoping for something within their budget. THey have said they may pay the extra? I dont have a vet emergency fund for my 2 dogs, but if something was to happen I would somehow find the money or borrow it. This is where pet insurance is a good idea. I dont want pet insurance PF

a lot of the imported kids crap, including bath toys are made from PVC, was just a gentle reminder.
-
My dog died possibly from PVC ingestion that most of the cheap dog toys are made of. Baby and toddler toys can not be made from this substance due to the possibility of sucking them. PVC or Vinyl dog toys are directly related to hermangisarcoma (cancer) in dogs as are coloured glazed water bowls. There are proven studies on this. Many countries ban these toys for dogs overseas but Aus is a bit behind in a LOT of things. Only buy latex, rope etc.

Wanted Pram For A Springer Spaniel 22kg
~Shepherd~ replied to Bilbo Baggins's topic in General Dog Discussion
The best pram is an emmaljunga as you can take off the seat and pop a bed down in the strong steel cargo holder only around 30cm off the ground. You could get an old one (the better ones) on ebay for less than $20. The coronado model is the best. We have a few dog pushers out this way that have the same set up. type A is the set up you want. The top seat lays dead flat and has a 5pt harness also. Just had a quick look on ebay and they all seem to be the newer black wheel style. You want the old white wheel model. The seat comes off completely leaving only the basket and frame -
We can do one here in the Nillumbik Shire area.

Woooooooooohoooooooooo, My vet clinic has offered to work with us ongoing and is going to do the best price possible for the group. Things are looking really good. -
Thank you I appriciate these ideas as I didn't even think of all the fun stuff like flyball competions even if it's just for them to watch. I have planned to go to a dog show in October just to have a look in the hope that the children will get excited and perhaps will have a new focus. I will look into flyball or agility. Do you have the flyball contacts for your state? My kids think its the coolest thing ever and we havent even started yet!

We have had a very kind offer of an assesment and ongoing support today including a few nights board, so thankyou so much for your responses. That offer fits perfectly with the time, financial and foster care restraints we have at the moment. Poor Bilbo has made about 6000 calls today re. vet work. Lort Smith cant do it for month and we need asap. Thanks again!!!!! -
5 months is a long time for a kid. I dont think you can put time frames on grief. I think what I was trying to say was get the kids around dogs that are here and now, do something fun and exciting and get the of enjoyment of dogs back again in real life, not just on a screen or paper. Getting back in to life is a great way to move forward, and having a family day out in the fresh air, having some lunch and watching dogs do something fun and exciting is great tonic.
