  1. G'Day Trish, Sorry I thought that any interaction with other dogs before she was fully vaccinated was a big no-no and asking for trouble. The LAST thing I want to do is risk Sam picking up something when it could be avoided. I am located in NSW, south of Sydney in Picton. As a after thought, one of our best friends in Perth has a beautiful female GSD that was well trained and my wife and children absolutely adored. The same as meeting the sire and dam when visiting our breeder. I dont think they expected puppy "behaviour", although I did warn them. Regards, Rob Hi Rob! If you chose the right puppy school you will be fine. All puppies have usually only had their first vaccination and they are held inside where the floor can and should be cleaned. I prefer ones that are not at a vet (less exposure to sick dogs) but most are held at vets. I don't know your area so cannot recommend anybody specifically but check out the Delta website. Here you will find a list of positive, reward-based trainers in your area - both puppy school, obedience clubs and private trainers. Good luck!! I think everyone has the "OMG what have I done?" moments when a new puppy arrives! It just adds an extra stress when the whole family is not together on how things need to be done. Trish
  2. Rob, Some good advice here. Just thought I would add that your pup does not need to be fully vaccinated to go to puppy pre-school. The idea is that it is somewhere they can actually go before they are fully vaccinated to get some socialisation and for you to get some education. I would also advise a visit from a trainer to your home while your wife is there too. The trainer will be able to give you specific information to your situation by observing the pup and your families reactions. Where are you located? Trish
  3. WOW - thanks for that puggy - that is exactly the info I have been looking for! I went to a talk by Ian Billinghurst on the weekend and it was very interesting. I have been thinking about going raw for a while and now I have the info I need to do it. My only trouble is my Greyhound who doesn't have many teeth left (13 actually!) - trying to work out what to do in place of the bones - or safe ones that he can kind of suck on!! He does have his canines so can pick at bigger bones but no molars on the top so he cannot actually chew any. My concern is that he will try to swallow a piece that is too big. The Poodle is fine and is currently munching on a brisket bone as I speak!! Trish
  4. Hi Karen! Yep - she has had a few clips by now!! The breeder did a couple while she was a baby and since we have had her she has had 4. I haven't clipped her myself (yet) but plan to try in the future. She is still in the proper puppy trim and I don't want to ruin it yet!! We are going away for a couple of weeks in November and her coat will need to be clipped shorter then. At the moment I am having to brush her every day or 2 - don't think my brother will be too keen on that while we are away!! She is quite good at chewing so haven't had the same issues with necks as you. I am in the process of switching over to totally raw so am just working out what to give her. Tried her on some fresh liver tonight !!! She played with it a bit and spat it out twice - until our other dog came into the kitchen for some - she swallowed it pretty quickly then The dogs in this house LOVE sardines - mixed with their morning yoghurt!!! Yuck!! We would LOVE to meet you when you are over this way again - let me know! The trouble we are having at the moment is Noodle loving her Mummy a bit too much. She is developing a bit of seperation anxiety especially when we are out somewhere and I leave her with Steve and walk away - should hear the carry on. Time for Daddy to step up bit I think!!! Trish
  5. Hi Noodle Nut  Must be the name Noodle - ours is doing it too!! The last few days she has not been bothering emptying her Kong. The new thing I am doing is giving her a chicken wing - which I guess is a fairly decent meal in itself. Her Kong is stuffed with a chicken neck and her mince mixture. We have stopped giving her dry all together. I am not fussing about it and my guess is that her growth is slowing and she doesn't need so much. Trish
  6. Yep - from what I know of Alexis she is lovely and I am sure her classes will suit you perfectly. What area are you in? Trish
  7. I too would be concerned that there is something more going on - the fact that she is still so adament about getting to those stitches is unusual. I am dreading the time our Noodle needs to be desexed - the way she jumps up on our bed makes me cringe! There will be lots of time in the puppy pen then! Trish
  8. Hi NoodleNut! These Noodle's are trouble!! If it is a UTI she will need antibiotics. Noodle had 2 courses. The cranberry and yoghurt is a preventative measure not a treatment. Although, she did seem to be starting to pee a lot again a few weeks ago so I gave her a couple of extra doses of cranberry and that did seem to stop it. So, maybe if it is caught really early it may help. Goodluck catching some wee!! Put her on lead and follow her around with a container - a frying pan is said to work well as it is flat and has a handle!! Trish
  9. Thanks! She is a Mini. Our 3 year old daughter named her and if we got a boy he was going to be Scrap!!
  10. This is our Noodle!!!! I don't have any recent (last couple of weeks) photos - what a bad Mummy I am!!! She is badly in need of a bath but she is off to the groomers Friday so won't bother! She is 23 weeks on Friday. Trish
  11. This Noodle is doing really well thank you!! I agree on the t-shirts - how funny would that be!!! We have had people asking what a Noodle is - we say her name is Noodle and she is a Poodle!!! Noodle graduated from her Basic obedience class on Thursday night - with a score of 100/100. I am a very proud Mummy!!! So I guess the environmental enrichment isn't doing her too much damage!!! I promise I will post a piccie of her soon - would also love to see a recent one of your Noodle! Trish
  12. Hi NoodleNut! Our Noodle (who IS a Poodle!!!) gets treat balls and stuffed Kongs. She gets some dry food and yoghurt in a bowl in the morning and the rest of it is in these objects of torture!! She is obviously suffering as she is a very well adjusted puppy, she doesn't resource guard, we haven't had anything destroyed, she doesn't bark, and is quite happy to curl up with her Kong when we go out! In my opinion this is better than leaving a bored puppy to her own devices during times she needs to be left alone. Roger the Greyhound also gets a Kong and haven't seen any ill effects there either. Different strokes for different folks I guess! Trish
  13. Sounds very interesting - can you post a piccie? Trish
  14. I agree - Noodle hardly ate anything the first few days but then she started and we have had no problems. Just give him some more time to settle. Don't fuss about it or try to tempt him with something special - you may well create a fussy dog!! Trish
  15. It can be a few things. In our case we think it had a couple of factors. Noodle doesn't like to wee when she is out and the first time she developed a UTI was after her first visit to the groomers. Whether she held on too long? This combined with the size of the dog. She was only about 3kg at the time and our vet said that because in little girl dogs the vulva and anus are reasonably close there can be a transfer of bacteria. Sometimes it is just the anatomy of the dog. So, in our case she is on cranberry supplements and natural yoghurt daily - so far so good. She has been fine for about 6 weeks now. As she grows the risk may reduce? Our vet has also talked with us about letting her have a season before she is speyed as he says this can help the anatomy develop better and decrease the risk. Much more common in girl dogs than boys I believe. Trish
  16. Yep - urinary tract infection. Our 5 month old Mini Poodle pup has had 2 in her short life. Best to pop her off to the vet as if it is it can cause problems if left untreated for too long. Trish
  17. Hi Joelle, This would actually worry me. Yes, your son was at fault and IMO at 5 years he is old enough to know better (my 3 year old certainly knows to let sleeping dogs lie) BUT it was a fairly significant reaction from Jake. Are you taking Jake to obedience classes - different to agility? If not, I would get him into that soon. Definately look at your (and everyone elses in the house) leadership and really step it up - he gets nothing unless he works or it first. My 3 year old gets our puppy (21 weeks) to sit and drop before she throws her a toy or gives her a treat. I am also helping her teach the puppy some tricks - she has got her walking through a hoop, spinning, giving a paw and crawling. All of these things help to reinforce to the puppy that the 3 year old is a leader to her. Of course this is all done with supervision. The puppy will still occasionally chase her and grab her clothes but my daughter "stands like a tree" and then we redirect the puppy. And lastly supervision. Good luck, Trish
  18. NoodleNut - can I just say that you sound like a FANTASTIC owner. It is so nice to hear of someone who knows what they are doing and is doing all the right things. As a trainer I see the results of people who have no idea and it is really encouraging to hear how you are raising Noodle. Trish
  19. I say use a chain lead for now until she gets over this stage - then you can use what you like! Trish
  20. Hi Ralphy! The easiest thing to do is keep him on lead in situations you know he will jump. If he is on lead and you are controlling him he will not be able to jump on people - the less he practises it the better. Ask people to ignore him when he is jumping like you do. You can also teach him an alternative behaviour, for example to sit. Have him in a sit before the other person gets too close and as they approach keep him there by feeding him something really tasty. If he gets up, ask them to move back, get him sitting and try again. If they get to him and he is still sitting just get them to say a quick (2 or 3 second) hello / pat and walk away again. He will soon learn that sitting is so much more rewarding! Same thing for not coming when he is called - keep him on lead. If he ignores you gently reel him in and give him a reward when he gets to you. Do not give him the opportunity to ignore you. I would also be looking at your leadership. Good Luck. Trish
  21. If you saw our Greyhound (35kg) and Mini Poodle puppy (now 5kg but 2kg when we got her) playing you would be horrified!! But they think it is great fun. It is actually the Greyhound who will end the game if the Poodle gets too rough - he just gets up and walks away. Re the crate overnight - the puppy was sleeping through (7 hours) by the time she was 10 weeks old. They get used to just sleeping and I think the metabolism slows down overnight too so they physically do not make as much urine - no water in the crate either. To start with you will need to get up to let the puppy out but it isn't forever and the benefits of having a crate trained dog far out weigh the hassle of geting out of bed for a couple of weeks. Good Luck Trish
  22. Hi Cassie! If you find the magic way can you please let me know??!! I usually walk mine separately - but today I couldn't be bothered going twice so they both came. Roger (Greyhound) is a dream to walk but Noodle (17 week old Mini Poodle) is crazy!!! I mostly had them both on the left but she was in front, behind, left, right, under Rog, across Rog!!!!!!! Think I will just do 1 at a time if possible until she learns some nice walking manners!! Trish
  23. How cool is that!! What colour is your poodle? We named our Puli as the cords she will have when she gets a little older 'may' resemble noodles Here is Noodle ...she had a bath today ... the very WET look and then the lovely fluffy look after being dried with the drier, face trimmed, ears plucked, feet trimmed ... LOVELY ;) Oh she is beautiful!! Our Noodle is also black! I will post a piccie later today. Trish :p
  24. Hi NoodleNut! I just wanted to say that we also have a Noodle!! She is a 16 week old Mini Poodle - Noodle the Poodle - named by our 3 year old!!! I wouldn't have thought it was a common name so it is funny to hear of another almost the same age!! Congrats on the crate training thing! We love crates and puppy pens in this house - Noodle does too (now!!). She has been in her crate in our bedroom up until last night when we moved her into the lounge. I expected a protest but we didn't hear from her until our daughter came in this morning at 7.30! Trish
