Not sure where in SA you are but you should speak to Adelaide Pet Dog Training. They use positive reinforcement and have recently had a deaf Boxer in their classes - and as far as I know it has been very successful. Good luck.

Puppy And Dog Training Schools In Adelaide
trishalouise replied to Kobi'sDaisy's topic in Puppy Chat
Try Julie from Nutts About Mutts. She does puppy school as well as adult classes and is fantastic! Good luck with your Vizla - they are beautiful!! I just recommended a friend with a Vizla to Julie and he has responded so well to her training - passed basic with flying colours and on to intermediate next year. Megan from Canine Interaction is also fantastic but not offering puppy classes as far as I know at the moment. Great for the next step though. -
I have a 3 year old speyed Mini Poodle who has recently started peeing in her crate @ night. She is fully house-trained. She hasn't had any issues during the day and she has a dog door to come and go as she needs. Her crate is in the loungeroom which is right next to our bedroom and she doesn't make any noise about wanting to go out (she is shut in overnight from about 11pm - 6.30am). She was speyed at about 9 months of age. When she was a baby she had a few UTI's but she hasn't had any since about 6 months of age. She id not showing any signs of a UTI in that she is not going out to pee frequently or straining. I will get her to the vet Monday but just after some thoughts. When does spey incontinance typically occur? Thanks Trish

You are not the only one!! Our Poodle was from a registered breeder. Did my research blah blah blah. Expected and discussed limited registration - turns out she never registered the litter as it was an accidental mating and the bitches 3rd litter consecutively and she didn't want the reprimand. Our pup had lots of urinary tract infections as a baby - when I asked if she had had anything like this before she denied anything - "Never had any problems". I later found out that genito-urinary issues are very much present in her lines She wasn't interested in us after we took the pup home and the few times I rang her with questions or updates her interest level was very low. A few months later she disappeared - no longer breeding - well not as a registered breeder as far as I know! So, even when you think you are doing the right thing it sometimes doesn't work out. Enjoy your pup and don't worry about the past now

I vote for high strength fish oil liquid - I give 5ml / day for a 32kg dog. I had him on Jointgard for about 2 years as well as fish oil capsules. After speaking with a human rhuematologist consultant I switched to just the fish oil liquid and I think he is a little better - certainly no worse. He has had 2 courses of cartrophen but I haven't noticed a real improvement with them.

Thank God Dogs Doesn't Hold Grudges Because...
trishalouise replied to W Sibs's topic in General Dog Discussion
I could here the Poodle crying one night not long after we got her. It sounded like it was coming form under the lounge (she was only 2kg then!). So I got my husband out of bed to help me move the lounge thinking she was stuck underneath it. Lounge moved - no puppy. Finally worked out that the noise was coming out of the baby monitor! Turns out she had followed me into my daughter's room when I went to kiss her b4 I went to bed and got shut in there!! She is now 2 and to this day she still gets locked in the garage regularly after following somebody in but not out!! She doesn't cry anymore - just waits patiently for someone to realise where she is!! I have also locked her in her crate and forgotten about her!! Trish -
No answer to my email either. Looks like they are going to miss out on lots of sales!!!

Completely justified. Poor Cody I wouldn't be able to stop myself from telling them what I really thought about them

Good on you - try to relax and Charlie will too!

We went camping on the weekend with our 2 for the first time. OH and I, our 2 children (5yrs and 3 months) and the 2 dogs!!! Dogs had to remain on lead as we were in a caravan park and it was fine. The Poodle can be a bit noisy in new surroundings but she did settle. Just did lots of rewarding quiet behaviour and minimising the opportunity for her to want to bark. The only problem with the Greyhound was at dusk when the rabbits came out - there were hundreds of them and his prey drive really kicked in!! So it was into the tent for him then!! Is Charlie crate trained? We found the crate a great tool for the Poodle - she settles beautifully in it and then we don't have to worry about her. Lots of long walks during the day and the dogs were happy to settle down. We have also now got an x-pen that we will take next time. A pain that the other people set up so close though - what a temptation for Charlie.

Yep - I have a Greyhound so you can imagine the comments I get. I had someone say to him the other day "Come home with me - I won't starve you". I just told her he is a Greyhound and meant to look like this!! Rude cow!!!

Gsd Arthritis Getting Worse
trishalouise replied to Kelpie-i's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Our Greyhound boy has been on Previcox for the last couple of months and he is a different dog. He has been on Joint Guard, fish oil and a course of cartrophen but it is the addition of Previcox that has made the difference. We give it to him every day and if we miss one it is quite obvious. Instead of moping around he is now much more interested in what is going on around the house. If it means giving them to him everyday for the rest of his life then I believe it is worth it (he is only 7 1/2 by the way). I am also interested in acupuncture so will be interested to hear your thoughts. Trish -
Your Dog's Unusual Food Preferences
trishalouise replied to poodlefan's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
The Corgi we had when I was little used to eat walnuts - managed to shell them herself!! Currently the 2 here will do anything for chicken poo - the Poodle especially follows them around obviously wanting the fresh stuff!! Trish -
When my Mini Poodle was a baby she had a run of UTI's. I put her on 1/2 capsule each day and voile - no more UTI's. I kept her on them until she was about 12 months old and never had a recurrence. Great stuff :D

Our 7 year old Grey had a dental last week. I am always concerned about anaesthetics with him as he had a very severe adverse reaction when he was desexed 4 years ago. I discussed with the vet which anaesthetic to use - he has had 2 since the adverse reaction so we stick to the one we know is safer. We also did pre-anaesthetic bloods as well as IV fluids. The vet also kept him on oxygen until he had fully woken up - flushed the anaesthetic gas out quicker. He woke up like he had been having a snooze on the lounge! Not woozy at all and the best I have ever seen him post anaesthetic. He was even happy to go back in there today for his Cartrophen injection so all in all I don't think it was too stressful! So, if you believe the procedure needs to be done and you trust your vet you should be OK.

Pretty sure you won't get green tripe in Australia unless you know someone at the source. I think it is illegal for them to sell it. Trish

Hmm - could try some turkey wings. Where did you get yours from? He is a bit of a swallower but they may be big enough. :D

Hi Jo! The trouble is that he has no top molars so it is more the placement of the remaining teeth rather than the number. He therefore cannot chew on either side at the back effectively. He does have roo tails that are huge so he can pick the meat off with his canines - but as far as the molars go it is a bit hard. The canines are fine because he has frozen Kongs everyday too so they keep reasonably clean - it it those pesky molars that get covered in tartar and inflammed gums - even with brushing - although I could be more diligent with the brushing :D xo

Hmmm - this has got me thinking about the vegie bit!! We have a Grey who is unable to have bones as he only has 13 teeth ;) So he has a mix of minced chicken frames, roo, various offal, sardines and vegies. His teeth have always been a problem and he has just again been in for a dental this week. So, now I am thinking that the plant sugars may be contributing? I am divided as according to Billinghurst the fruit especially is good for arthritic dogs. Any thoughts?

Check Chain Or Halti?
trishalouise replied to all that glitters's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I have dealt with a Staffy who completely shut down when his check chain was put on - so depressed he wouldn't even lift his head, let alone move. As soon as it was taken off he was a different dog. So it is not just a head collar that can do it. I rarely recommend head collars (prefer flat collars or martingales) but will do so if the owner is really struggling. If introduced SLOWLY and positively dogs do not have the aversion to them that you describe - it is just that they are rarely introduced to the dog properly. A lt of people wack them on and off they go. This Staffy happily walked nicely on a martingale after we swapped from the check chain. -
2 puppies and a good instructor is far better than 10 puppies and an average instructor - there should never be 10 puppies in one class at puppy school anyway! What would concern me a little is the size difference but, again, if this is managed by the instructor it won't be a problem. Puppy school is about your puppy learning about many things - not just a big playdate. There should be a nice mix of learning about places, people, noises etc, as well as some basic commands. Puppy school is also about you learning so if you are happy that the instructor is good then you will get as much, if not more, out of the class as your puppy. Good luck with him!

I could have written this post!! I have my poles gathering dust in the garage because I haven't been able to get my hands on the DVD yet! I have the day to myself today and was going to get them out - but after reading this thread I will make myself be patient and wait until I have the DVD!! Does anybody know the best place to get it from in Aus? Trish
