All White Bulldog - Skin Problems/issues
Paganman replied to 4ngi3's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I dunno about skin problems but youll have to keep it out of the sun, my mates white bully gets sunburned on his nose and his stomich and the end of his ears. If hes ever got to be out in the sun he has to have cream put on that they got from the vet. Vet says they can be prone to skin cancer if they keep getting burned. Im talking bull terrier here do you mean an English bulldog? Not that it makes any difference all all-white dogs can get burned in the sun -
Yeah my girl marks and even cocks her leg sometimes, shes just as bad as my boy. I dont let them wee on peoples gardens but they do wee on nature strips sometimes I think most peoples dogs do. I always pick up the poop in a bag but I dont really worry about wee usually its just a dribble anyway.Dogs like to wee and poop away from where they live its like not messing in their den I think, my two will even hold on sos they can do it down the road or at the oval.

I dunno, if you havent got the first one trained youll be struggling if you get another one then youll have two dogs wanting to chase but I dont think you can blame dogs for wanting to chase rabbits theyre natural prey. Chasing horses is a no no if the dog ever gets out and chases other peoples stock it could get shot.

Sorry carnt remember it was a while ago now, I think they just got a bit red and then she started worrying at them and thats when it really got bad, the vet had to put her on cortisone so shed leave it alone and she even had to wear one of those wide collars for a few days till the cortisone kicked in. She started off with hard skin and then it got real dry and bits started to break off leaving soft red skin underneath and thats when she started. Most of the damage was done by her if shed left it alone shed of been ok I think. Oh the orange red fur is caused by licking I think.

Leaving Meat Out To "cool" To Room Temp
Paganman replied to WinGus's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I got all my dog meat frozen in portions and I get it out the fridge every morning before I go to work and just leave it to defrost, its usually well defrosted when I get hime but the dogs have never had a problem with it. -
One of my dogs got sore elbows from lying on concrete and I had to stop her doing it coz she got calluses and the hard skin started to break off and she got sore.I put a big mat on the concrete that she couldnt scratch up and it gradually got better, took a few months but.

From what Ive read from all the pro trainers on this forum this isnt something thats reccomended, I think this is called an alpha roll and is a very outmoded thing to do, used to be done in the old days but thought to be very old school and dangerous now. Im no expert but Ive been researching buying a staffy when one of my oldies passes away and Ive talked to a lot of breeders and they all said I should get a different sex to the one Ive got at home as a lot of the bull breeds can be (Please dont flame me but most breeders said this) aggressives to members of the same sex and you can get some really bad fights. Also none of them sell pups until 8 weeks so maybe you got yours a bit to young. As I said im no expert just going by what I was told.

I think most puppy preschools are closed in Dec and Jan I guess a lot of people go away and its not worth them keeping running a lot of obedience schools close as well.

hahaha my two both did this in the end they grew out of it. I fenced off the washing line for a while.
-
Could be a possum but probably its the cats, could be both. Maybe move your dogs out of the laundry where they can probably hear everything thats going on outside.

I reckon you should go to the vet, my boy had smelly ears last year and I tried to treat it myself didnt go to the vet and it got real bad, I ended up going to the vet and it took a few months to get rid of it once infections in ears get a hold theyre real hard to shift I didnt know any better at the time now Id go straight to the vet and not mess about. It was hot weather at the time and that made it worse it didnt really clear up till autumn came.

Aw thats shocking, poor puppy how cruel. All thatll happen is the pup will be scared of him.
-
Thanks SparkyTansy someone PMd me so I have an answer. Eyes have to be checked as well Ive been told so hell have to get back to the breeder again.
-
My girl did this sometimes when she was a puppy and she grew out of it she just used to get overexcited wasnt her fault she was just a baby. You dont ever punish pups for weeing inside and you NEVER EVER rub their noses in it thats a real old outdated thing cruel and barbaric and nobody does that anymore, if puppy has an accident inside the owners should rub their own noses in it for not being more careful and keeping an eye on the pup LOL. Edited to put LOL in sos it doesnt sound like Im being serious.

A guy at work is getting a chocolate lab puppy for his kids so of course I warned him about hips and elbows so he asked the breeder. He didnt want to was a bit embarressed about it but I kept on about it told him that they can get diseases that can cripple them and that the mum and dad should be xrayed. Anyway the breeder told him that the mum has hips numbered 3 and 5 and the dad has 4 and 8. Mums elbows are 1 and 1 and dads are 1 and 2. Are these ok?I think I remember reading that hips musnt add up to more than 6? but Im not sure on the elbows. He says that there arent any champions in the pedigree so does this mean than the breeder is just breeding for colour?I dont want to meddle in his busness but he picks up the pup next Sat and I want him to get a healthy dog. Sorry should this be in the health forum?

Is there some reason why he carnt stay home? 5 days in such an intense sort of environment would be pretty stressful on a young pup Id think. I mean I can see that you want to socialise him but 5 days a week seems a bit OTT, he must be worn out.

My dogs would kill chooks if they could get them its what dogs do. Make sure that the pen is dog proof and make sure the wire is heavy duty, if the dog jumps up at the pen all the time and all its got is light chook wire it will eventually break and the dog will be in. My dogs love people and kids and their fine with other dogs (most) but theyll kill chooks or possums or birds or rabbits if they get the chance, doesnt make them bad dogs just mean their behaving as dogs do. Keep dogs and chooks seperate and you wont have any probs.

LOL bullyluvr I was the same I just didnt comment on it is all. It looks really funny when you first see the topic on the board

Thanks JulesP sounds like a good option Im imagining a hydrobath without the pump. Would definately make bathing the dogs easier.
-
Hey sounds interesting what exactly is a booster bath, kinda like a hydrobath?

Rabbits are a dogs natural prey I wouldnt take the risk if i were you. My two are oldish and trained and easy to handle but no way would I leave either one of them alone with a rabbit or cavey. One bite and the rabbit will be gone and I dont know that you could blame the dog. Best keep the rabbit in its hutch and just let it out when the dogs inside or out for a walk. Or better still keep the rabbit out the front and dog out the back I reckon thats fairer on both of them the dog wont be tempted and the rabbit will keep its neck.

K9force Dog Handler/training Course
Paganman replied to Griffo's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
K9 Force Ive been told that a couple of years ago you came down to Victoria and did some private consultations over a week or so. Any chance that youll be doing this again at any time in the near future? -
How much vegetables are you feeding, my dogs get gas if I feed them left over vegies anything more than a spoonfull or two gives them gas.
-
I use advantage not frontline and I put it on straight after a bath and it works fine. My dogs are sort of medium sized and I put one between the shoulder points and one between their hip bones. For a bigger dog I think you put in on in three places.
