  1. PW - I was thinking it would cost about $200ish.. So as long as it's not like $500!!
  2. Thanks Ness. Like I said, we've never really noticed anything before and just thought her sitting like that was due to the polished floor boards as Leia used to do it as well. But in saying that, they are both from the same litter so if it's genetic, they could both have it. We were only just saying on our drive down the coast this morning that we haven't been to the vets in a while, we must be coming up for a trip! We didn't mean it literally though.. Ari - I'd rather be safe and go and have it checked out, than just dismiss it as something someone said and her be in pain because we didn't think twice about it.
  3. Can anyone suggest somewhere to go on the south side of Brisbane? Or do I need to go through my vet first to get a referral?
  4. We just have a few concerns at the moment with hip displasia with one of our beagles (Sally). I posted this photo below on a beagle forum and one of the members raised concern about the way Sally is sitting. They advised that they've been told by a vet this is a sign of hip dysplasia. Can anyone confirm this? I always just thought it was because she was sliding out on the polished floor boards? She's always done it even from when she was a wee puppy. I can't say we've noticed it whilst outside on the grass, or this morning at the beach. Today while we were at the beach, we noticed that she was sometimes running with the "hop" that is one of the signs of HP. It wasn't always, just sometimes. We'll be booking her into the vet for next Saturday, but I just wanted to ask a few questions here first to know whether we are worrying about nothing. Is there something else we should be looking for? Any other symptons?
  5. I have this vision of a beagle flying through the air backwards with their ears covering their eyes! Oh the hilarity. Dedrei, I hope Ruby is okay!
  6. We got our puppies in January this year and left them inside in the aircon as we were concerned that they wouldn't know what to do if it was hot. Thankfully they've done a lot of their growing up during the cooler months and when the hot summer days hit again, they'll be 12 months old and hopefully will know how to take care of themselves in summer. We have a doggy door that leads into the laundry and a gate to block the laundry off from the house. It's tiled and they loved lying on it earlier this year as the tiles were nice and cold for them. I'll be going to buy a clam shell and filling it with water (from a tank of course) to see what they do. Other than that, we'll be doing the ice bricks with treats in it as they LOVE ice.
  7. Thanks for the directions too varicool, we did find it after we nearly fell into some of those holes in the dirt road. We thought that the bar may have dropped down and we drove around the back.. but just weren't to sure. Will definitely be attending another day soon!
  8. Wow, that was awesome! Our little champion Leia, I didn't think at all that she would be the one interested in the lure. At home if a ball is thrown, Sally chases first and Leia follows. I thought thats what would happen with lure coursing. Nope, Leia (even with a sore tail) ran the course in full on her first run and scored 111 points for one run. Sally got about half way and decided to cheat and run down the middle and meet Leia back in the barricades. On the second run (they were very tired), they both took off, but just as the lure took it's first turn, Sally stopped and looked back at us and I called and I think Leia herd me as well as she stopped and turned around. We were told not to call out, but I thought Leia would be further enough away to not hear me. I'm very proud of their first efforts at lurecoursing. Once Leia's tail is all better, we might take her out to an all breeds day and see how she goes.
  9. Thanks varicool, I gather they only open that gate/metal bar when there's an event on and you can drive further in? Is that correct? We went driving the streets around the park to see if there was a trickier entrance that we couldn't see. Lets hope we know where to go tomorrow. I hope there's signs, or just beagles with their noses on the ground sniffing
  10. For all those that go to lurecoursing at Wally Tate Park, can you let us know how to actually get to the park? We have a beagle club lurecoursing day there tomorrow and we thought we'd go for a drive this afternoon to make sure we know how to get there and we still aren't sure. We went down behind the train station and into the carpark near the Wally Tate Park sign and there didn't seem to be a dog park in sight. We went for another little drive down Beenleigh Road and found the park a few hundred meters down from where we were. Problem is, that road that goes down beside the train station for the park is closed due to the construction on the railway station. Can someone who's been there in the last month or so, please let us know how we get from the carpark near the mosque, to the dog park that looks like it's behind a skate park and some bush? Thanks
  11. They say there's a 90% chance of it happening in the other eye if it happens in one. I was just hoping we'd be in that 10% that it didn't happen in both
  12. ERGH, dog dammit. Sally just came inside after playing outside with Leia and her right eye has now popped I just massaged it back in and it's okay now... but looks like she's going to need the operation on her other eye too! Least the operation on the left eye has held!
  13. I just thought I'd update this thread with some photos I took before and after the operation. Sally is still doing well, only thing is she has a lot of tears on that side, so I guess the gland is still working! This is what Sally thought of me taking the photos! This is after the operation:
  14. I know, that's whats worrying me.. my beagles are borked They don't skoff down their food!! What's wrong! Not that it's a totally bad thing because they won't become obese.. but it's a concern that they aren't hungry most of the time. ETA: Maybe I should go buy a big bag of ziwipeak and add a few pieces into their dry food, might get them to eat it.
  15. hesapandabear, where is Nutro sold? I'm honestly not sure what food we'll put our girls onto as I have no idea... I do know though that they go nuts for ziwipeak as we use that as treats for training.
  16. We were always told that puppies should be switched to Adult food when 12 months old, so when they reached 12 months we were going to swap them to royal canin or science diet or something like that. Optimum is what the breeders were feeding them and we just kept it. Hrm, once the two bags of food we have in the cupboard are gone, we might try swapping to another brand of puppy food gradually and see if that makes a difference. Thanks!
  17. OH and I had a discussion at lunch about moving the girls to an adult food. They don't seem to eat the puppy food much anymore and are eating more and more poopies. I'm wondering whether their puppy food (optimum puppy) isn't giving them the nutrients and diet they require and there's something missing? They'll be 8 months old at the end of July. We decided from when we got them that we'd leave them on the optimum until they were 12 months old, then switch to a better quality food. Is it too soon? Should we maybe be changing to another puppy food until that 12 month mark then going onto an adult food. Thanks in advance.
  18. I'm having trouble putting the cream in her eyes. It's not a liquid, more of a cream and they said that I needed to pull her eyelid out and put a line of the cream on the inside of her lid. BUT, that's easier said than done Going to have to wait till OH comes home to do it. I'm at work at the moment covering the other lady for her 1hr lunch break. I only live 3kms from work so it's alright. Just means I had to kick the puppies outside off the warm lounge.
  19. Wow, I took the day off to look after her and she so doesn't need it! But I won't tell my work that... Day off to sit at home and slum around in my jarmies
  20. She's all good We think if was her who had a little accident in the cage because they were both covered in poo so we had to wash them again. Now the poor little girls are shivering in front of the heater. She's very spritely, doesn't look drowsey at all. Her 3rd eye lid is partly covering her eye, but that will go down within the next few days as it's just the imflamation. But other than that, just some ointment in her eye twice a day and she should be good as new in a few days!! Thanks for all your concern
  21. I still haven't heard I just phoned but the receptionist hadn't heard and the specialist was still in surgery. She said they had 3 major surgeries on today and would get the lady to give me a call back.. That was 45 minutes ago... Now I'm worrying
  22. There aren't really any symptons as such, just the gland pops out and looks like this below: (This isn't Sally) It looks horrible but apparently isn't painful to the dog. However they can see the obstruction in their vision. It started off in our girls as the T piece cartlidge in their 3rd eyelid folding over, and because the 3rd eyelid isn't as strong as in other breeds, the gland can dislodge from where it's located and "prolapse" which is what has happened. Very rarely it can fix itself by being massaged back in and may not happen again. But, most of the time it needs surgery to correct it. The specialist advised me that she will remove the gland, create a little pocket in the 3rd eye lid where th gland is meant to sit and suture it in. From there, it's just a case of whether it's going to work or not. If it pops again, you can try more surgery to try and correct it again. After that, I have no idea, remove it all together? But it produces 30% of their tears so it's no advisable to remove it straight away as it causes dry eye conditions later on down the track. Isn't it amazing when these things happen, you know NOTHING about it. Now by ringing different specialists and reading up and listening to what others have said, you sound like to know what you're talking about! hah It is apparently a very common thing to happen. I have full faith in the specialist, she was very good in explaining what happens.
  23. Well, I made it! And quicker than I thought I would as well. I left home at about 6:30 and was over at the specialist by about 7:10, left there about 7:30 and was at work by 8:10, so I think that was some pretty good going! Poor girls didn't want to get out of bed at 5:30am when I got up though, so I left them in bed. Silly me because when I went outside to get them to go to the toilet, they thought they were going for a walk so kept jumping up at the gate. Didn't do wee wee's, but did them in the car Lucky we've got our dog protector cover there. Sally has seen the specialist (they just rang) and she's definitely got cherry eye and they'll be operating on her about 12 today. She said there's about an 80% success rate. There are two different types of dogs that get this, the smaller ones (like shitzu's and malteses) and then there's the big dogs (english bulldogs and mastiffs) and she said that the operation isn't successful on big dogs, but the smaller dogs have an 80% success rate which is the category beagles fall into. She explained what they do and what we can expect and if it happens to not work, what we are to do then. They don't shave their eye to do the operation, but do shave their leg a little for the drip. I said it was fine, just do what ever to make her better, she's more important. So, I'll update later today when I get the phone call to let me know how the operation has gone. Fingers, toes and paws crossed it's all good!
  24. Thanks for the offer, but unfortunately there won't be any time to waste. But if you've got some tips on how to get back to the freeway the quickest so I can make it back to work on the southside through peak hour, that'd be very helpful!! Thanks Julie, I'll let you know how she goes. I can't wait for Thursday to roll around. OH and I both said last night that she's just not herself. She's freaking out easily, very quiet and just not herself. I want my old Sally Wally back I realise after Thursday she's going to be a bit drowsey and still not herself, but hopefully once it heals, she'll be back to her normal self. I hope they don't shave her eye. That dashes all hopes of them being in our wedding!!
  25. Thanks for the recommendations guys, it makes me feel heaps better knowing that they are a great place to have treat your puppy. Will be a long day on Thursday as we live on the southside of brisbane, I'm treking over there at 6am to drop the girls off, then having to go back again that night. But it's all worth it if my little girl is fixed
