Thanks, I will give that a go tomorrow when the light is better. Good thinking. I forget I have a Speedlite....

I had my camera on aperture priority. Looking at my crap blurry ones. ISO500 and SS 1/400 I don't like pumping my ISO as I hate noise.

I am completely crap at movement photography so please bare with me and my stupidity. I want to get a piece of cheese going down Rocco's throat jumping at the camera looking down on him. I tried in bright light but the shadow was all over his face and I hate blown out sun exposure on his coat. So I moved him around the other side where it is shaded but no shadow on his face. Because I have lost some light I have to open my lens up right?? So I open it up to it's fasted at 1.4 but then I am loosing DOF and the cheese is out OOF and anything past his nose. But they all turned out blurry anyway. I have to use the 50m as I am holding camera awsell as throwing cheese. I need a light lens. So basically could someone explain to me best settings for capturing crisp moment in my situation or what I can try to get this image to work without having to buy the Bega cheese factory.

Love_ASD that sky and colour is lovely.

tlc if I was you I would be learning your camera and getting it off P. Start on A for aperture priority and just start reading your meter. Hopefully LukeW might pop in here to give you some tip's. If not maybe PM him as he is really very helpful.

I use photoshop and lightroom. Love these programs. yep that pic of Zero could do with a bit of "retouching"..........

Some good work since I last look. tlc thanks for filling me in on your breeds. I really had no idea. They are all very cute. TerraNik agree with iltby on the DOF with the book. Todays was Roc and mine last photo. We did not make it to 30 days but for two reason I am finishing it. Firstly, Roc has been so patient through all of this and I can see him tiring of it. I dont want to make him unhappy forcing him to be in photo situations. Plus I prefer to be behind a camera not infront. We might still do a few now and again. But not everyday. Our last... Today I got some "in the moment". Time out for Ralph and sister. Asleep. This guy was sleeping in the toilet doorway at the gardens. He had a smile on his face that was so captivating due to his situation. I did ask him if I could take his photo. He just shrugged, nodded and went back to sleep.

 no I dont think you would be flickiing out your 70-200 in the house.

Shell nice work on the cat, it's really lovely. Great minds think alike as I have been 50mm practicing on getting a perfect shot of Calvin. I love this lens for Calvin but not so sure I am sold on it with the dogs. I actually don't like using it on the dogs. Is there really that much of a difference in the 1.4 and 1.8?
-
Thanks everyone. Bindi was that cloud forming and the light like that when you took the photo or is it PP? Very cool.
-
What is your budget? If you want fast great glass you could look at the 70-200 f2.8 VR. You would def get some nice action shots on this but it's not cheap. There is the 80-200 f2.8. I was considering this and I think so was Rugers  at one stage. Could look into this. Good luck.

Love_ASD. Lovely sunsets you have captured. Leopuppy04. Your dog is stunning. I am not really a shepherd, collie/cattle dog person, but I have a bit of a soft spot for a Australian Shepherd. Two really nice ones that go down to the local park and they seem to be a nice solid build. I like very much. Darien. Nice strawberry potter. I am sure it all adds to the flavour. Bindi great shot of the horse and cart. Very nice. tlc, love them all cooling down in the sand. Great capture. What breed is your dogs? TerraNik I like the morning after. I find it always helps in the morning to wash the panadol down with a glass of whisky..... Day seventeen. Cuddle cluster. I was having a day where I just didn't feel like getting the camera out. Been feeling a bit down about my photography at the moment and thinking of packing it away. I am sure we all get like that. Day eighteen. Insignificant. Since owning Rocco I have learnt I how insignificant I really am. He is a very impressive dog and catches a lot of peoples attention. I could be jumping around in a rubbish bag and no one would notice, it's all about him.

Rainy the moon shot is really well captured. I like it. Bindi good work on experimenting with the PP. :D tlc your dogs must be so well trained. They all seem to sit well for a photo. I would never trust Roc n Ralph like that in open space. CM nice, I think I made comment in flickr. PC Darcy is just so cute and you are getting some very nice pictures of him. Itlby welcome back. great shots. TerraNik I like the pub shot with the light. Day 16. Macca's. I only had one chance to do this as I didn't want to be feeding him up on crappy Macca's for perfect photo. When we go to Macca's he usually gets a cheeseburger and since that was the closest place I could find for a coffee fix this morning, he got a treat. Plus a photo for "one moment" as I haven't posted this little guy in awhile and I walked Ralphie today and stopped for a quick photo with him.

Cool thanks Ash, let me know because if I can I would love to join. I might have to build a pool room for all my awards................. Almost missed that one Rocco1, it'll be slightly more obvious at 17, decreasing as you move towards 35. You might already have a feel for it with the 24 end of yours. It all comes down to personal preference. I don't mind a little bit of distortion or Big Head (Or Other Body Part) Syndrome, especially with portraits; Platon uses it very effectively, check out his portraits of Clinton, George HW Bush, Pat Buchanan and Rev. Al Sharpton. Eta: And go look at Christian Bale, Jim Carrey, Prince, Alexander McQueen and Paul Smith. I actually don't mind the distortion either. I like it. RD I am starting to like you more and more. You have such great taste in photographers....... Platon huge fan. Not so fussed on his fashion/advertising work though.

Thanks RF for the samples. Takes a nice picture. But comment on the edges and keep in the middle, that is only if I am shooting at 17 right? Thanks Ash. This is my goal one day. Hopefully with a few more years experience. Ash do you guys use a 17-35? I know Alex's switches between a wide angle and his 70-200. Just cannot remember what your guys wide angle is now.

neutral or portrait here.

Darien, the little girl in the Easter hat is so precious. Day fifteen. Roc and myself love people watching. We don't sit at our doorway watching people as that could be a tad weird. But I did find a good way to avoid annoying junk mail. A couple delivering junk looked up and saw Rocco looking down at them, sheepishly asked me if it was OK to put junk in our mail box..............

I was told the 50mm can distort as well. How much distortion are we talking here with a 17-35? RD, Dorothea Lange's Migrant Mother is one of my favorites.

Advice On New Camera - Which Canon
rocco replied to Kirra_Bomber_Zeus's topic in Photos, Photos, Photos
That is true - I know that sometimes I look at someones photos and go 'wow they are awesome' what camera do you use? and its the same as mine - or a model down. Then I have to go 'oh, mine should be that good - no excuse!' I have to agree with this. I see peoples work and think I need to upgrade all the time. But reality is it's not my gear it's me. Look through flickr and then check out peoples cameras. Some of the most amazing work on that site is done with point and shoots. -
I think I have to agree. No hi-res files but a nice print and web viewing file of the photo, otherwise find another dog....... At the end of the day they are getting your time for free!?

guys I am not going to make comment on the "ideal" street photography method. As I sit in the middle on this. I do think what Luke mentioned in you cant be shy and it's something I need to combat. But after alot of consideration I have decided on the 17 - 35mm f/2.8. Purely as what I have found is I have never come across a situation in my work were I have needed length yet. But I have needed more width and to be closer to my subject. I am hoping to do a bit more work for a magazine in covering some local journalism (only a small magazine, but you have to start somewhere right ) so thinking this might be a more practical lens at this stage. Also with the wedding work I have helped Ash out with I have noticed width is my problem, not length (thank god I am not a man writing this or it could all get a bit daunting :p ). So the 70-200 can wait for end of year. Thanks for the help guys and you given me some great points to consider. I just have to figure out my style, but what I do know is it's "people" I want to concentrate on. Oh and get as good as Ash so I can win an award.............. :D

PC do you have the 50mm as well? If so how different do you find that from the 85mm? My friend always ask peoples permission before he takes a photograph. His style is more about interesting people he finds out and about. I dont think I would slink around peoples children with any lens, communal showers at camping grounds are far more exciting. kidding............

tlc, I like "Whos that". Fantasy feel to it.

I am getting no where with this thread I keep changing my mind. I was going to buy a prime 35mm as they are pretty cheap. What would be the lens you use most for your street/photojournalism? I have a friend that does a lot of street photography and his work is divine, he mentioned he used a prime 85mm 99% of the time, hence why I am considering it.

I was wondering were iltby was. I hope she is enjoying her holiday. Everyones work is looking good. TerraNik I'm enjoying your month of medicine. Are you studying to be a doctor or nurse? Day 12 Day 13 I thought I had made the light, but ended up using the flash, hence my wide eye...... I m not high. Day 14 Found this wall that projected a great shadow. I didnt have my tripod with me otherwise it would of been a better shadow. But I cant be bothered going back there.
