I'm pretty sure these are taken near each other. No idea. All I know is that it was south of Adelaide. Alex says that Maslins Beach sounds about right...
-
So you know I'm not lying... I suck at landscape. In all my years, these are my best three efforts. All taken in Adelaide back in 2006 I peaked in two days and it all went backwards. I should stick to people.

Hey Everyone - the first post in this thread has been updated with some waaaaaaaay better and more detailed information, kindly given to me by renowned landscape photographer, Tom Putt. Please head over and have a read as it might give you some more ideas on how to go about shooting a landscape.
-
woohoo! I'm off to update the opening post with an exclusive
-
UPDATED: No nudes... landscapes Although I have seen nude landscapes before. Very clever and creative.
-
Sorry guys... had an email from his wife this morning. He is home sick. However I will launch the month and hopefully he will be able to give me something for you all when he's feeling better. off to update the OP...
-
I would except he's a very busy man and I still don't know if he'll have time to send me the information. I don't want to jump the gun. Alex will be calling him a bit later so I'll just find out whether the email he sent me was meant to have something attached.
-
They will send you your goodies in the mail after you have registered.
-
Sorry guys... the very lovely photographer who is contributing sent me an email without anything in it. I'm assuming it was meant to contain an attachment but he's left it out. He is home now, but I'll give him a call tomorrow and see if he can send it again. Please don't hate me for making you wait an extra day.

A very talented and generous photographer has given us DOLers a bit of an exclusive. This is an article that is to be published in the next issue of Better Photography magazine so we get to read it here first. Tom apologised for it being so detailed but I said that the people here would love it. UPDATED WITH THE CHALLENGE: THIS IS LANDSCAPE MONTH This is a short version of information about the author/photographer (taken from here: http://www.tomputtphotographicworkshops.co...amp;pageID=5136 If you would like to see some of Tom's work or read more details about him or his workshops, visit www.tomputt.com Also if you visit his blog, there is a recent video interview with him there... and yes, that is what he's like. Thanks for your patience everyone. Tom's been sick the last couple of days and has pretty much sent me this first thing this morning. He's very passionate about sharing his knowledge, so was only too happy to help out for this challenge. Happy shooting for the month everyone!

Difference of workflow. I rush through my lightroom batch process and get it exported asap. I used to do 'edit in photoshop' but I found that I wasted time playing around with too many photos. (which was great for the couple but not so great for time management.) So I got strict on myself - proof and export only in LR. Then I select a small amount of images to play around with in PS - edit them, process the whole folder with scripts and get out of there. Yep - so many ways to skin a cat. I'm sure I'll have a different way of doing things in a few months time.
-
because quite often I will go over images in photoshop and do a re-edit, fine tune or apply textures before I'm completely finished. I could add everything in lightroom but then I would be double handling as I'd need to do some of them again in PS. (ETA - not that I 'NEED' to, but I want to and like to. ) btw - have you seen the awesome new texture tool from Totally Rad Actions? It's called "Dirty Pictures". It will be my next purchase
-
I have only recently discovered it myself and don't know what I did without it! It makes processing so much faster.

Scripts are a very useful tool for batch processing large volumes and way easier than actions, but can combine actions if you wish. It works on an entire folder so ensure that you only have images you want processed in that folder. We use it after we have finished proofing in lightroom and exported the jpgs. We need smaller files to use for client viewing so this is the sort of situation where scripts come in. Click on file, in the drop down menu you will see "scripts", hover over that then click on 'image processor" The script box opens and looks like this: In that top section, select the folder that you want to process. In the second section you can select where you want the processed files moved to, if you select, "save in same location" it will automatically create a new folder - image processor will never save over the top of your images. It has a great safety net. In the third section, specify the size you want the images to be. eg. If you had shot on a 40D and wanted the images to stay at full size you would put in jpg 12 and 'resize to fit' width 4800 and height 4800. This is because a 40D shoots at 12 inches x 8 inches 400PPI. 12inches x 400 pixels per inch = 4800 pixels Because you want the processor to process both landscape and portrait orientated images, you need to specify how long you want the longest side in BOTH of the boxes. So say you want to process the images to a web size, first work out how long you want it (maybe 10 inches on the longest side) then times that by 72 pixels per inch. You would want both boxes to say 720 pixels and you'd probably want to save as jpg 6 or 7. As you can see, there are also options for TIFF and PSD, if you save multiple versions of the files, you can create all versions in here at the one time. Or you can simply select the option that suits your needs. Section four is the next most useful part - this is where you can apply an already existing action to the entire folder... handy for adding a watermark, making everything black and white, adding a border anything you want as long as you have it in an action and you want it applied to the whole folder. (or combine two or three actions into one single action, then add the new combined action to the box and let it do three things at once.) That's it! Hit run and let it do it's thing. LOVE scripts!
-
Are scripts like actions? Yep. Very handy for things such as creating proofs for clients, we can use a script rather than creating an action. Takes about 30 seconds to set up a script as the information is all right in front of you, no having to record the action and testing it first. Sorry for the hijack here for a minute...ok, I clearly need to figure out what these things are Can you save them to use over and over, like actions? My proof thing is an action at the moment. I'll get online when I have a few minutes to see what the difference is and how the heck to use them. And here I thought actions were pretty cool I'll start a new thread about scripts
-
Okay, you can go sit in the dirty purist corner then...
-
Does this mean I can call you a Drrrty Grrrl?

read again - nobody said you had a superiority complex. and again, so it doesn't get taken the wrong way, I'll explain that this isn't directed at Rubiton, this is information for those who might be reading the thread and thinking the wrong things about PS and Lightroom. PS and Lightroom aren't just about applying arty stuff and effects. Lightroom is a tool that can be used as a part of general workflow. Very rarely will effects be applied in lightroom (we do sometimes, but that isn't standard) - THAT is usually saved for PS. PS can also be used as a workflow tool. I have recently discovered scripts and they are awesome.
-
Don't be like that. It's all in your head. At no point have I been name calling or running down what anyone says or does. It's all personal choice. Just as you are defending someone who chooses to work one way, I am defending those who choose to work another - it is as simple as that and yet now you say you really let yourself down. There is nothing wrong with healthy debate, the trick is to not get caught up in it. ftr - Yesterday I had a look through every single image in the links you posted - great works and very touching. That Dzhoum (I don't know how it's spelt) looks like a very cuddly dog.
-
Do they no longer have fingers to type? You seem to do alot of talking for people lately?
-
correction - I would never say that someone has a superiority complex. That is just rude. As you can see by where I have quoted myself above. I said it could appear that way and to me it possibly means that. But at no point did I say that Rubiton had a superiority complex. I was very specific about the way I wrote it due to the fact that I have been on Rubiton's side of the argument and said the exact same things in the past. Please don't misconstrue my words.

ETA: Did I call you a purist? Or was that someone else? Damn. I loved debating at high school. People rarely like to play now. :D totally off topic - when I did the auditions for Big Brother many years ago, one of the tasks was a debate. I was put onto a side that I was totally against but I defended it right down to the line and our side 'won'. In the afternoon we had to vote people 'out' - one of the people who was on the same team as me for the debate said they were voting me out because if I was able to argue so strongly for a point of view that I was against, they didn't want to confront me about something I believed in. now back on topic - I honestly have no feeling one way or another over who chooses to shoot RAW and who chooses to shoot jpg. Horses for courses (I thought Rubiton might appreciate the pun). :p ;)
