  1. no luck here either. Apparently the same thing happened last year and people who emailed were allowed to submit late entries.
  2. TLC - can you please cut and paste that into your opening post and change the title of the thread, then PM Troy and ask him nicely to pin the topic? ;)
  3. I'm here. I only had two hours sleep a couple of nights ago then I was out last night and today I've been working. ;) NOVEMBER CHALLENGE Back to basics - Practicing on portraits (human or animal) for Av and capturing movement for Tv - if you are shooting manual, the world is your oyster! Spread the word that this is a great time for people to jump into the challenges. This month will be re-examining shooting in AV and TV modes and for those who have a good grasp; you will be shooting in M mode only. AV - Av is the aperture priority mode on your camera. Essentially, the smaller the number, the larger the opening/aperture is. In Av mode, you select the size of the aperture and the camera will automatically set the shutter speed Tv - is your shutter speed. If you are shooting something in motion, depending on the speed of your subject, you will want a shutter speed of at least 1/200th of a second. If you start playing with slow shutter speeds, you may want to use a tripod. When using the Tv mode, the camera will automatically set the aperture. Manual - you need to set the ISO, Tv and Av yourself. The best way to learn manual mode is to keep it SIMPLE, check your results in the back of the camera and practice. I'll post more about Av and Tv modes a bit later but right now I'm taking my human kids for a walk.
  4. I'm off to buy props so I can do one of my shots tonight. I have had to alter my plans. Casey was originally going to model for me but he's at his dad's house so I need to use Alex... only thing is the size difference. A little bit sad I don't get to do the photo I wanted to do but will give this new angle with Alex a bit of a try. Got to be in it, to win it
  5. October hasn't been a popular month so November will be revisiting the basics to catch up new people who might want to join in
  6. You've done really well. Loving the photos
  7. I have an idea for glasses but I can't convince either of my kids to model. I'm thinking I'm going to go with plan two... similar theme to plan one but not so complex.
  8. I don't know who she is considering putting her to but I do know she won't be interested in using one of the dogs and I don't think she will be interested in the other dog either (but I'd have to ask about that one.)
  9. oh crappity crap crap. I better get a move on if I want to enter some photos!!!
  10. Thanks everyone. It's all food for thought. After a couple of pm's I thought I'd clear something up. Kayo is my girl and I call her my 'liver feral' because she is extremely active and somewhat destructive although she's getting better as she's maturing (as you'd expect.) Kayo is in joint names with her breeder and will be having one litter with me before heading back to her breeder for another litter. I do have the option of having another litter with Kayo after she comes back from her breeder, but I'm also planning on breeding Kayo's mum one last time and I simply won't have room for more dogs - hence why one litter only for Kayo while she's here. If I somehow win lotto and can afford a few acres, this may not be an issue. Jerojath - I'll contact you for more info in a few days. Bogged down with work at the moment but would certainly love to find our more from your friend.
  11. My liver feral bitch will only be having one litter with me so I'm considering trying for dual sired. She's is one of 12 pups and my girls average 8/9 pups per litter so I think she will carry a decent sized litter also. I have access to both sires I'm considering and being a maiden bitch I'd prefer natural matings (my girls never have issues with matings - they're terrible hussies). Most of my girls have had their large litters with only a single mating. I've been doing a little research and it seems that, for even litter results, it's suggested to take semen from both sires and inseminate at the same time, but as I said, I would much rather a natural mating. If trying for natural with both sires, what would be the ideal way to go about it so that there is an even chance for both sires to produce puppies? Also what are the steps that need to be taken for DNA testing (as I've never DNA tested before)?
  12. Well, that sentence doesn't make much sense in the end. The police were unaware the dog was dead? Well then, who had the dog pts? And whose job is it to tell the police that an appeal was lodged? Were they just supposed to know? It doesn't sound like a police stuff-up, it sounds like a solicitor or court stuff up and if that's so, then the police are not to blame. I somehow doubt they're psychic. poor sentence structure. It should probably read something like this: Sam was already dead as the police were apparently unaware that an appeal had been lodged
  13. I love Cameras Direct and use them BUT be aware, they are still gray importers. They say that you get an Aussie warranty but it's not a factory warranty, it goes to their repairer instead (ie- a canon lens with an issue doesn't go to Canon for repair, it goes to a local repair agent that Cameras Direct deal with.) If this isn't an issue for you, then I highly recommend them. Our last lens purchase was second hand from another photographer - she listed it on Facebook and I happened to see her status update within 3 minutes of her posting that she was selling the lens. Lucky for me because three other people also jumped in to say they wanted it. First in best dressed Other than that, shop around and don't be scared to play camera stores off against each other. We just bought a Canon 5D Mark II for $400 less than the advertised price because we waged a war between two retailers.
  14. We use Pic press all the time. Good quality.
  15. click on the image you want, above it click on "all sizes" select the size you want to post and click on it grab the photo's URL (scroll down the page) come back here, paste it and put (without the spaces) done ETA: You figured it out... oh well, other people might find this handy.
  16. Okay... after some heavy duty shooting, I am in LOVE with the Sigma 24-70 2.8 HSM lens (the one without macro). I went shooting in low light conditions and pushed the lens to it's limits and have been very happy with the results - the lens didn't struggle to find focus at all. There is a small amount of softness with the lens at 2.8 with lots of light but that is more user error than anything else (I should have gone to f 3.6 or 4 to cut it out. I knew it was going to happen but ignored it anyway.) It gets a from me. We are purchasing one (or two). ETA: I have a couple of photos to post but that will be later. Will show one with backlighting and one in dark conditions so you can see the difference.
  17. This should be an easy month for people. This month is all about sunrise and sunset. You can take photos of anything or anyone you want, but the rules are, it must be taken within 20 minutes of the advertised sunrise or sunset times AND there is to be no flash used (unless you are backlighting and using it as fill flash). Keep in mind, that the beautiful rich colours of sunset are usually happening about 5 minutes after the advertised sunset time. You can go back over your knowledge of previous months to explore landscape, backlighting, movement, aperture etc. This month I would also like to encourage people to talk about the settings they have on their camera and why they chose to shoot the way they did (you don't have to, but it can sometime help the process to understand what you are thinking as you shoot.) Good luck and have lots of fun.
  18. Ahhhhh!!!! I JUST had an idea for the hundreds and thousands I just need to get my hands on a decent macro lens now. I'm excited. I have an idea for the glasses but need to rope in a model. No ideas for anything else as yet though.
  19. That looks like an ambient light meter. These are used for metering for available light. Totally relevant and still able to be used often with better results than in camera metering. Nowadays you can use them when you have too many distracting features in an image that will confuse the camera... (eg - lots of black or lots of white that your camera will automatically attempt to over or under expose). Set your ASA (ISO) then your desired aperture and the meter will tell you the correct shutter speed to set your camera on.
  20. He saw cats and ignored them. He was too good for them. He wasn't aggressive at all, but he was protective.
  21. Lovely dogs who can be very protective of their favourite member of the family. Our shiba, at times, used to bark to keep the kids away from me (at which he was promptly put in his place) :D . Very independent dogs who like to do things in their own time - Ashi also only like to be touched on his terms. If he came and sat with you, you were allowed to touch him, if you went over to pat him, he'd walk away. They also have their clown moments. I can remember a game of hide and seek that went on for about fifteen minutes with lots of bow-wowwing at me and the kids.
  22. they are only interchangable with a lens adaptor - otherwise, canon only fits on canon and nikon only fits on nikon. You can buy generic brands like Sigma or Tamron that are cheaper than genuine Nikon but still do a decent job.
