  1. Messages on Pet Rescue. I believed these enquiries were a duplication of what was being sent to our email address. But looking at them we have not received all of them. I'm not sure if some are coming through or people are also sending separately to our email address. Has anyone worked this out. Or are you reply directly to the enquiries on Pet Rescue.
  2. Thanks for the replies. Dog has scored well on hip tests (apparently a problem with the breed) and has been living with young children whom he adores according to current owner. They are downsizing. Dog is middle aged. Good looking dog who has been desexed.
  3. Is there a rescue for a black Cane Corso. This guy has been back tothe breeder but says they are not interested as the dog is desexed.
  4. does anyone have any contacts around Sale that could do a property check at Denison asap please. Thank you Trisha
  5. Thanks for all the advice. We went to the physio where he used to have treadmill but she has advised he is beyond that now. He has two or three short 10 to 15 minutes walks a day and in the evening gets up to a little run. He still has quality of life but because it's distressing for us to watch him doesn't mean that it is time for us to give him a needle. He loves his food, still scavenges in the park for scraps, watches the little foster doesn't steal his bones, and barks frantically when he knows its walk times. Yes he is aware he soils inside and he waits outside till we clean up. Husband gets up three times a night for him as he tries to go outside sometimes when he doesn't need too. If we can delay the end we will, till he doesn't want to get up one day or he refuses a meal. We'll probably try acupuncture and bowen to see if it helps. And will look at the B12 injection. Thanks for that.
  6. Our lovely boy has just had 12 months since he was diagnosed with anal gland cancer. He had a horrific operation to remove a tumour that had squashed his colon so he couldn't toilet at all that involved breaking his pubic bones. This was followed by chemotherapy. He tolerated it well and apart from occasional incontinence bounced back well However with the last treatment the oncologist pointed out that the increasing incontinence wasn't from the operation but from spinal myelopathy. This was confirmed by our vet. On vet advice we have him on a huge dose of Vitamin E and are just getting a compounding mixture that has shown signs of some success overseas. He has also had a course of cartrophen to help with any residual arthritis. He is dragging his left leg and slowly getting worse with his hind quarters lowering. Has anyone had any success in delaying the inevitable with acupuncture, bowen massage or anything that stimulates the nerves.
  7. Is anyone able to do a property check at Yarragon or Venus Bay pls.
  8. I'm not sure if you are after a specific breed rescue or not. We cover Melbourne but are concentrated bayside and are an all breed rescue with a particular interest in sighthounds. We have a lot of adopters, carers and local support down that way, and a drop off point at Mornington.
  9. Is anyone could do a property check aroudn Bonnie Doon over easter we would be grateful
  10. We are preparing a submission on microchips and registration. It's all haywire in victoria.
  11. Is anyone available to do a property check in Mortlake as soon as possible
  12. You are lucky not to have kennel cough from Mildura before. It's a particularly nasty strain that some vets down here don't even recognise as kennel cough. We've had dogs it's lasted for months. Vet in Mildura has offered to test the strain it is so virulent to see what best to treat it.
  13. I do not respond to harrassment. We have also retained your mother's voice message. Trisha Taylor
  14. can anyone do a property check in swan hill pls
  15. Is that the RSPCA Burwood Aphra? Is there anywhere I can see that written. I had always thought 8 weeks was the minimum age. I have heard of desexing at 600 gms but didn't know any shelters that did it. It's a catch 22 isn't it. We think 3 months is the ideal age for desexing but certainly before section 84ys were routinely risking lives by desexing early as otherwise they would be killed anyway.
  16. Sorry I was not clear. To rehome a pound dog without desexing is illegal in Vitoria. With a surrender there is a moral and ethical obligation to vetwork the animal before rehoming or you are not a cfc network. This is the problem wiht rescue in Victoria - there is no Code or regulations for groups to follow except of course for DRAV who have their own Code. And of course when criticisms are made of cfc networks and rescue groups the examples that will be used are of those 'groups' that are not vetworking before rehoming.
  17. yes a step at a time. But we will get there. Registration, ownerships/microchips are two important issues to be sorted on a state basis not a council by council.
  18. Can you explain this further? What about a person running a rescue group that has dogs on their own premises, and out with other foster carers. Most people I know keep a few foster dogs themselves. Many keep the dogs for a quarantine period, then get the vet work done, then place in a foster home. What is this person's position? If you have foster dogs of your own and are obeying the council bylaws that is permissible. You cannot be keeping and rehoming all dogs and cats from your own home and be a community fostercare network. The entity is based on groups having their dogs and cats in various foster homes. Once you are over your council's limit, and have unregistered dogs you have a problem. The problem area in Victoria is that councils will not give a set time in which you can keep a dog on your premises without registering the animal. This needs to change so we know if we can keep a dog a month, two weeks, three weeks. And it varies from council to council. And we have found that councils are tougher on foster carers than 'normal' dog owners if that dog is found outside the premises for any reason, even if it has just arrived. I don'[t know if that answers the question or not. But if you are rehoming all your group's dogs from your own home you are not a cfc network. You are then basically kennels and a DAB.
  19. I have no idea why it would be illegal anywhere. We run a foster care operation. The dog is in foster care. It is rehomed when desexed. We are the owners of the dog. we pay for all vetwork. We are responsible for returning completed paperwork to the pound. I cannot image why or where it would be illegal. To rehome the dog without desexing the dog would certainly be illegal in Victoria. Perhaps you have misunderstood something. But again I repeat we routinely do early desexing. We are talking about special cases only here.
  20. I should also point out that we routinely pay for any'extras' at our vet if needed - pre-bloodwork, iv fluids, hospitalisation. And we are blessed with having a vet that does such a great job on tiny animals that one carer on picking her up rang us to check she had been speyed. Such a tiny little scar, and no external stitches to be removed. Unlike one other vet we used where it was more like 10 stitches. We no longer use them.
  21. I think that is the most sensible option for sure. I am sure people will present the dogs at 6 months for desexing rather than face losing them permanently. I dont know why some rescue groups feel it is essential to spay regardless of the age, size and breed, it seems that the attitude is "better dead than bred". Please do not misunderstand. We do not suggest this is an alternative to early age desexing generally, but only in specific cases where the dog or cat's life or future well being is at risk and where this had been stated by a vet. We would never be involved in passing on an undesexed rescue dog where there was any risk of the animal having a litter. And if we had an animal in the early stages of pregnancy we would always abort.
  22. We've had a few emails from groups querying this. Here is the situation. Under the Domestic Animals Act amended as at the end of December 2011 Community Foster Care Networks (CFCNs) are for the first time given a legal definition as follows community foster care networks means an organisation that - (a) arranges temporary housing for cats or dogs in private residential premises instead of other premises; and (b) seeks permanent housing for the dogs or cats. This is very important as it is the first time we have been recognised as entity in the Act. The definition DRAV provided was accepted pretty much as was given. Under the amended act: CFCNs can have a Section 84Y with Council (but council unfortunately is not yet obliged to rehome or give a Section 84Y) that allows them to take unvetworked dogs One CFCN can pass on a dog or cat to another CFCN but ONLY if vetworked; that is one group cannot take advantage of the Section 84Y of another group. A CFCN can pass on a dog or cat to a shelter WITHOUT vetwork as they are bound by their own Code to vetwork those dogs. This was a grey area before that we are pleased has been clarified. CFCNs can operate as foster carers for a pound or council direct as can individuals. This would be applicable to a local organisation in particular wanting to take care of say an ill dog till it was recovered, but again is dependent on the goodwill of the Council to allow foster carers. Any group that keeps multiple unregistered dogs and rehomes from their own premises is not covered under the Act as they are not operating as a CFCN, are not entitled to a Section 84Y, and are in fact operating as a Domestic Animal Business and come under that more onerous Code. This is very important when some small puppy farmers are beginning to call themselves rescue groups and rehome to gullible members of the public as such. No doubt the new Code being looked at for Breeding and Rearing Establishments will look closely at this issue too. Councils are getting very edgy about the number of unregistered foster dogs being held in their area and this needs further attention by both the government and the rescue groups themselves. The status described above was granted on the basis that CFCNs acknowledged their responsibilty to obey the voluntary Code of Private keeping of dogs and cats.
  23. We routinely desex all animals before adoption. However in a case where for some reason such as serious health risk where operation should be delayed, we do make sure we have vet advice and we place the dog as a foster dog with the person who is intending to adopt it, that is they become our foster carer. Microchip and paperwork remain in our hands and no money exchanges hands until the animal is desexed. The foster care agreement acknowledges we are the owner of the dog.
