8 sleeps til the big day! I know! Can't wait!!!

Well, after a couple of months of planning to bring a corgi into our lives my OH, (god bless him but he really has no idea) mentions in passing not wanting a dog that sheds too much (seriously we spoke about this a gazillion times already), and I said, why the hell are we getting a corgi then? You do realise they shed ALOT anyway, back to our original list of dog breeds we went, we discussed whippet and greyhound but he doesn't want a dog that has to live inside for the most part so instead we've agreed on a curly retriever which suits us down to the ground and my OH has lived with one before so he knows what they're like. lol anyway, the even better news is that we don't have to wait as long! We pick HER up on the 13th!!! so excited.

its a great idea. We adopted an older cat well before they had this when my OH and I first moved in together, we were planning on a kitten, but they only had one 9 year old cat, and we didn't have the heart to leave her there. She has turned out to be the best cat ever. Oldies nearly always get overlooked but they often make the best pets, I hope that more of the older pets get adopted because of this, they really do make wonderful additions to the family.

Travel is the reason I don't want a huge dog. Though, I do like quite alot of the larger breeds but for the moment at least, it really isn't an option for us. We've been researching breeds for over a year trying to find one that is suitable and that we agree on. We always seem to come back to the corgi. Well..whatever you do, do not go an meet any Vizslas!!! You will end up with one!! A Vizsla is the most engaging dog I have ever owned. (Mind you, I had a half corgi half lab which was also a brilliant dog! The milkman ran him and nearly me over and he broke his pelvis. In those days it was PTS time unfortunately. But, yeah, he was an amazing dog. We lost him in the bush for 6 weeks and found him again.....a little skinny, but he survived-He jumped off the back of the ute somewhere out the back of Western NSW, probably chasing a roo or a Rabbit.) Go the to RMS this year and walk through the dog area. You get to see a whole stack of different breeds all in one place and sometimes, when the owners are OK with it, you can interact with the dogs and perhaps gain some insight into a breed you may not previously have considered. We were planning on it, with the hope to meet up with some corgi breeders.

You've def made me see whippets differently. The only thing that I didn't like about the breed was the timidness of the ones I'd met and I worried about it growing up with two boisterous boys (and planning on adding one more human baby to the mix at some point in the future). I hope to meet some less timid whippets in the future.

how easily do greyhounds travel? When we get a dog we'd like to be able to take it with us on holidays. (we only ever go to my inlaws house. Which is about four hours away)

Greyhound rescues do sometimes have pups. ;) Something to consider :D

The responses to this thread reminded me of the only other breed that we discussed that we both agreed on, which is a greyhound, we considered adopting one through GAP. I don't know what happened to this idea to be honest, maybe something to think about again. Though, I think we'd prefer a dog as a pup rather than an older one.

My mother in law has a couple of kelpies and they're fantastic dogs they always seem happiest when they're working. :D

saint bernards? Lovely dogs, but I wouldn't be able to cope with the droool! lol

That's cool. What sort of corgi are you looking at - Cardigan or Pembroke? If you've not seen or heard of them, add the Swedish Vallhund to your list - awesome little dogs and you could have fun showing one. We're going with a Pembroke mostly because thats what I had growing up. I was looking at Swedish Vallhunds the other week and they're def on my list. :D

We are def getting a corgi. They're not too big, they don't drool, they're active, good with kids, intelligent and we can take it with us in the car. All the things that we're looking for in a pet who is to be a member of our family. There are loads of other breeds that I really love and it took my husband and myself a long while to come to this conclusion! I was just curious what everyone else went through to pick their breeds and was it as ardous a process as it was for my hubby and I. lol Stack can I just add a note of caution. No dog is born "good with kids". If you want a dog that's tolerant and behaves appropriately around children, it will involve training and supervision. That's stating the blindingly obvious but to be quite frank working breeds like the Corgi arent' the first dogs that spring to mind as "good with kids". Don't change your choice by any means but if you don't want to live with a pup that wants to nip and herd your kids, you're going to have to work on it. Sorry, your quite right, my statement was ill thought out. I realise that our corgi will need work, constant supervision around our boys (any breed obviously needs these things), Our first corgi (I was about 6 or 7 when we got her) liked to try and herd us, she did with training stop, but she stilled liked to herd the cat . We plan on taking our pup to puppy school and dog odedience through our local club and of course our kids have been learning from day dot how to treat animals.

Haha, my OH wanted a dalmation. I kept saying "noooo, stay with a Spitz breed" and I won in the end. Why did your OH say no to a lappie? I'm assuming it's the amount of hair? Having lived next door to Corgis for most of my life, a lappie doesn't shed any more than them. A Husky on the other hand... my house is full of white tumbleweeds from her, you NEVER see lappie hair though. OH is just picky with dogs. He didn't say WHY he didn't like it, he'd probably like it more if he met one. I figured they wouldn't shed much more than a Corgi, lol when I was living at my parents there was fur everywhere! He loves Corgi's cause of the nature of my parents Corgi. Other than that he grew up with Kelpies and JRT on his folks farm, he'd much rather own a cat (which we already have an iam allergic too).

Its interesting to hear why everyone likes their respective breeds so much! and I know the pain of not being able to decide on breeds, lol. OH wanted to get an Irish Wolfhound or a Pharoah Hound, which isn't suitable for us due to our fencing not being appropriate and our car being to small should we want to take the dog with us on holidays. lol, then OH said he likes Dalmatians and Whippets, which I honestly don't know too much about but most of the Whippets i've met have been quite timid so I wouldn't think appropriate with children. Corgi's I know, so its easy for me to say yes corgi, and the fur doesn't bother me at all, OH fell in love with my parents Corgi so thats why he has agreed to a Corgi as well. I really am fond of most of the spitz breeds, I would love a Finnish Lapphund but OH said no. lol

I probably would end up going with corgi's if I was to show. I just wanted to see why people picked the dogs they have or came to love the particular breeds they show.
-
I'm curious as to how everyone made the decision to get the breeds of dogs that they currently have? I really love dogs in general for the most part, but I grew up with corgis, and coolies. We're getting a corgi at the beginning of next year which we can't wait. A corgi is the only breed that my husband and I could agree on. (hes not a dog person.) But theres a pretty long list of breeds that I would be happy to own. I haven't mentioned it to my husband yet, mostly because I know the response i'm going to get haha, but sometime in the way way way further down in the future (many years away), I would love to maybe show dogs and while I do love corgi's, there are so many lovely breeds!

Do Breeders Like To Hear From Their Sold Puppies?
Stack replied to a topic in General Dog Discussion
I hope that when I get my puppy early next year that our breeder doesn't mind us updating him. Should I ask him before hand? I know that if I ever got into breeding I would love it if puppy buyers updating me on how they were doing. -
lol that is so adorable.
