Chicken Mince From Leonards Chicken
rose of tralee replied to a topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Oh really? How many in a box approx? My Pointer puppy is a food gulper, but a whole frame would be OK for him? I bought a box last week, I'll go count them. $10 a box here (Mackay) ~ 24 frames, tossed in freezer asap. I usually ring ahead, make sure some on hand. Never disappointed in freshness nor experienced contamination. Minced anything has more exposure to air, handling etc The Lenards frames appear to be off younger birds compared with some I bought from a butcher. -
Lamb and pork bones are off young animals, aren't that dense compared with beef. Could be ditto for veal therefore. As for size, always bigger if in doubt/ a new style of bone for a particular dog. A butcher who knows you may be happy to keep you whole lamb necks. I make lamb neck stew for the humans...and the chooks get the neck bone still in one piece to clean up afterwards.

Very welcome!

princess nat, Mackay Wholesale Meats, the main one in Alfred St, had today small trays of pig larynx and associated soft tissue for $3. Approximately 7 pieces/ tray. Previously I have seen similar sized trays of organ mixes: lung, spleen, heart, in small pieces. Staff member said the composition of these does indeed vary depending on what's available. They also had pork bones, going by the price humans may use them for stock. Lenards at Mt Pleasant for fresh chicken frames. Tried frames from one butcher recently, though fewer/ box and therefore cheaper/ box, the frames were bigger and harder....not necessarily an issue, just figured I preferred the Lenards ones. Woolies do lamb and beef heart, beef cheek etc as do many butchers. You may find fishy bits at fishmongers. Cheers!

Well done you for being smarter than Tango because despite what some uninformed say, Dallys are really smart critters. We've not had a male; our girls have always wanted to keep tabs on their humans, that requires a pretty flexible neck when you're racing the waves down a deserted beach :nahnah: So happy this fella has a life now.

cazxxz, I've given up asking butchers if they will halve pigs' heads tho' refusal doesn't offend Only one ever did, and the other day my current favourite explained it's the teeth that damage his bandsaw. I either take to the head with an axe and remove the lower jaw for sooner or later; or, allow the head for ~ 20 minutes, retrieve, hose off and refrigerate for tomorrow or the next day. Depends on when garbage collection day is.

Finding It Hard To Find The "one"
rose of tralee replied to italmum's topic in General Dog Discussion
Oh, excellent! -
It's these sorts of language questions that entertain my family. Wonder what Roly Sussex (talkback language guru) would have to say!

I feel (irrationally) that just about any action is justified if it stops the disposable dog behaviour. If the new baby is the rels' first child, I imagine the standard of care of any current dog is going to deteriorate more as well.

Help Please! Problems With Going On A Walk
rose of tralee replied to Alison Ma's topic in General Dog Discussion
It's great that your plans are going ahead, Alison. We have a 9 yo dally (also Lola) whose walking manners are improving as well. Never too late! Can you imagine how I felt last night to hear OH winding her up (as if the sight of us putting joggers on wasn't enough) saying, Do you want to come WALKIES, Lola?!! DO you? -
I am pleased with the outcome of frequent vacuuming + monthly Program + Fido's rinse when and if required. That was every 5-6 days initially, 3 weeks between the last two. We have carpets, most of which are accessed by the dog. She isn't an itchy girl but will give the classical hind leg scratch/ vocal bite at the rear if a critter turns up. Plan on staying on Program while we are in this house in the tropics. Oh yes, and we love not having spoton contamination. Fido's quite acceptable.

So very sorry

This is timely as I managed to lose herself's Halti when I took it off towards the end of a walk. The Halti seemed to stimulate her to poke her nose out and I'm keen to try a harness. Lola's specialities have been lightning fast reversals of direction (oops, missed that smell) and equally rapid lunges to the fence line on the right.

Farewell, Toby, beautiful heart. The rotten start ones so often are gold for their owners. Sounds as though his friends have handled this in their way. Worse I had was a young Anglo gelding who stood in the top corner of the paddock and vocalised over a few days for his mate, who succumbed to secondary C.

Hi, lost a reply to you yesterday. Main points were to by all means go for the ones that don't specify no dogs as well and be prepared to walk the talk. We're on our fifth lot of renters with animals on our acreage place; nothing has put me off though I do like to be informed/asked, don't like turning up on an inspection and being told that the Lab I saw roaming along the busy country road was theirs on trial Although The Dog was not your topic, perhaps you'd seriously consider starting with a mature animal from a reliable source since presumably it will be home alone in working hours. Good luck!

Safe Bones For A Young Lab
rose of tralee replied to 16Paws's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Some follow a rule which says the meaty bone should be bigger than her head to prevent rash attempts at swallowing pieces that may choke. Another way of saying what you said ;) Complicated cartilage-y, meaty bones, maybe with skin still on (e.g. unsmoked pigs' trotters) will provide chewing interest and take time, be of some nutritional value. Putting 'everything' in her mouth may be reduced somewhat by your providing suitable bones. Please avoid so-called recreational bones, usually well-stripped beef thigh bones...too dense and hard. Chicken frames are popular tho' quickly disposed of. A whole chicken maryland/ half small chicken could double as a meal. -
A Few Questions About Feeding My Dogs
rose of tralee replied to FranVT's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Associated with much-loved horses since childhood, I can handle horse being used for for pet meat when it is slaughtered locally and with good welfare and humane practices but I'm not comfortable with unwanted/ unsound/ unrideable animals left in droughted paddocks or 'dogged' to distant abattoirs. I do understand the cultural leap it takes if you allow yourself to think about the horse as companion animal. Which by no means all horses are. 'Nuff said. It's a good protein for some dogs as part of a varied diet (raw meaty/boney/slightly organy for mine). I didn't reread your post but it seems camel is available again? I am excited about that, stocking up at the outlet you mentioned has been on my list. Sourcing grass fed beef for the more favourable omega 3 is a good thing. Breeding stock culled for age/ infertility are normally straight out of the paddock. -
I am afraid the common sense and knowledge-by-osmosis that used to be commonplace has largely disappeared and when will that be coming back?
-
What dyzney said. I find staff at specialist irrigation shops generally to be helpful and interested in coming up with solutions, even for small dollar jobs.
-
Woolies Andergrove, Mackay Today, turkey drumsticks @$3.99/kg, 2/ pack. I'll be going back for a couple more packs tomorrow.
-
Raw roo tails seem popular for all the right reasons. Discrete observation with any new kind of raw meaty bone may be a good thing with particular dogs. Mine takes it slowly and I can mind my own business
-
May I ask, what kind of bones does she get? I like large cartilagey type 'bones'... butchers market beef femurs for recreation...scary! These have a certain notoriety for damaging teeth and some dogs develop a bone attack style which puts extra mechanical force on molars.
