  1. Noodle does this with our 6 year old .. she often holds the chew (a huge advantage a few days ago with the Elizabethan collar on her head .. not be trusted stage where she would be at her stitches but made holding onto chews impossible as the collar obstructed her paws from holding it ... can have it off for eating now though) while Noodle tried to curl up in her lap ... more like plonks herself on top of Tara's legs for a good ol' chew and getting patted at the same time. If Tara sits on the floor Noodle goes to get her chew and goes to sit somewhere on her .. see picture .. big sook!
  2. Hi! Yes the crate is a must ... ours in in the tent with us at night and at home Noodle sleeps in the crate in teh kitchen .. basically she will sleep where ever the crate goes which is an enormous advantage. Yes, they flat pack and you can get them from the pet shop although I bought mine (with a canvas cover which is waterprrof too) from a seller on Ebay .. saved heaps compared to the petstores and they don't sell the canvas covers most of the time. There is a thread going at the moment about crates so have a look at that as lots of members have put on links to where they got theirs (definately worth checking it out). I am in Mlbourne and bought mine from 'PuppyPower' seller on Ebay .. great price and I saved $25 going to collect it myself. Might be a good idea to get puppy used to the crate before you go away too. Our penned area, may look a bit cruel but it was good itme out for our pup when she was exhausted from running around on the beach and a good way to keep her contained without tethering and also to give the kids and her time out. Noodle spent a LOT of time with us when we were away but she also needed time for a nap and to eat etc.
  3. We took our Puli pup (also definately NOT a lap dog) camping for 5 days at Easter this year at nearly four months I think she was. Not exactly the length of time you are going for but I had enough 'stuff' for four weeks I reckon ;) We have a 10yr old and a 6 year old (at that time they were 9 and 5) We also took two pens for outside and the dog crate for her to sleep in our tent with us. Note in the picture there are actually 3 tents which are ours (you probably can't see the Green Coleman (huge) peaking over the top of the smaller yellow (storage tent with bokes, chairs, esky ... general junk), also the gazebo. We bought an 11m tracking lead (Black Dog - they have a website so you can Google it) as Noodle's recall was not the best ... great for those strolls along the beach and they are much freer to romp. Microfibre towels and chamois to dry off puppy ... much quicker to dry, absorbant and light to carry.
  4. Tom is 5 and in prep so out most of the day and Holly is 4 and only in 3 year old kinda once a week so in most of the time with me. At the moment they say a firm 'Daphne No Bite' and stand up but she just keeps on doing it. She jumps lots too, and we say 'Daphne No, Down' but this isn't working either. She's brilliant at sitting for food, and when she knows we'll play fetch with a toy, even in doorways but she just isn't getting the 'stay' and 'no nipping & jumping' rule. It doesn't seem to affect the kids too much, Tom just gets disappointed with her and I explain that she'll grow out of it and Holly cries if she gets hurt but then forgets about it and says how much Daphne is 'her baby'! They've never lost their temper with her either which is good; I just keep explaining that Daphne is only a baby and we as a family need to teach her how to play nicely. Any advice you can give me would be great! Great to hear your updates of Daphne. This is what we did with regards to the jumping problem .... (I took it from one of my other posts).. Lots of visits out and about (safely of course .. the mental stimulation of just going out in the car can be enough to subdue a pup and in addition good socialisation and getting to 'show off' our people magnet (people are usually suckers for pups so the pup gets rewarded for four paws on the ground .......gets you a pat from people). Noodle is still not free to roam the house (she is 6 months as of last Saturday). She is sitting on the kitchen floor as I type this (off leash) .. the computer is in the kitchen and this is where all of us spend 85% of our time. She only comes off inside when I do the training sessions inside with her and late at night when the kids are in bed and the house is quiet. Outside she has full reign of the backyard. Update: Noodle is now offlead in the house about 70% of the time now and when the kids are around too now .. .she stays close by and refrains 95% of the time from jumping up. In the morning when she is inside (after she has been outside from 6 - 7am) and the kids get up (and she is hyper and excited to see them) she is on a long lead attached to the kitchen drawers (Update: still doing this .. she is still hyper in the mornings)... kids take one step back when she tries to jump and they are out of range. No nipping .. again out of range .. same with my husband and I. Lots of reinforcing back turned, arms crowwed and looking at ceiling .. kids have it down pat, admittedly older than your daughter. Four pwas on teh ground gets you a pat. Our six year old was fearful of Noodle's mouthing but is now very confident and Noodle only occassionally tries to mouth .. usually if she is very excited or losing teeth ( the situation for the past 2 weeks). Update: She has a lovely set of adult teeth now and there is a marked drop in her need to mouth at all. I would definately recommend a pup being restricted inside until they learn good manners (not jumping or mouthing or nipping) and toileting is 100% successful. We have had no damages either inside or outside with Noodle chewing things she shouldn't. As an aside a friend of ours had $3000 worth of damages in the first month that they had their lab pup at home ... I kid you not .. yes, you counted the zeros correctly..... chewed up a Blackberry her husband had for work and then chewed up his designer glasses ... great when he was giving a presentation the next day to 350 people! That pup was getting very close to being re-homed LOL (tongue in cheek .. they knew it was their fault not their pups) Our pup only has access to her rotated toys of which there are many. Lots of home training .. doggy push ups now (our ten year old son does this with her .. sit, reward, drop reward .. up down up down ... she loves it and the tiny bits of cheese she gets). This puppy training is incredibly hard work but as others have said it has dividends of having a social dog that everyone loves and is a part of the family. keep looking around the DOL site .. there are plenty of ideas that will assist you.
  5. Valium!! Yeah well it is ME that needs the valium!! Three nights now of waking up to toilet her at 4am!!! What's with that ... probably knocked her urethra/bladder in the surgery .... whatever ... I am running on empty .. Yep! Well it was definately a case of the sulks!! Proved it this evening! I took Noodle's Elizabethan collar off this evening and took her outside for a pee/poo as usual and then a wipe down of her mouth/neck ...brush etc.... same as ususal but this time I have kept it off longer. A few times she tried to go for the stitches (to lick) and she was growled at and I got a look of 'Oh dear! Mummy saw!' .. after a few similar growls she has not done it again! I have given her a chew knot to keep her happy and she is thoroughly enjoying herself after not having really chewed for a few days. Evey now and again she looks up at me and sees me looking ... heavy sigh 'Mummy is looking so I don't want to be growled at' kinda look .. well, that is my interpretation of her nose cos that is all I can see except for a big black mass of fur! Also been wagging the tail tonight (always pretty tricky to see butit was there and the mouth was open .. happy mood. The collar will be going back on when I go to bed tonight ... still not to be trusted. She was in the pen all day ... no escaping as there is nothing to climb up on now as the kennel was removed after her little antics on Sunday. Can I also say I saw her moving .. looked a bit like limping .... strangely even after the collar was taken off. The absolute ripper was that I got some tiny bits of grated cheese out of the fridge and got her to sit, drop, sit drop, stand ..... no problem with her gait ... completely normal even with walking. Maybe this whole speying is uncomfortable but boy she turns on the 'Poor me' attitude pretty thick! I should get the video out and tape her ... perhaps she has good acting instinct The change in persona is amazing!
  6. Sounds like Noodle needs some pain relief, I would suggest ringing the vet and organising for something to be picked up if possible. Mutilation or irritation of a wound is frequently a pain response, the reluctance to walk simply reinforces the presumption. My new philosophy is if unsure, give analgesia, if we are wrong it won't hurt (pun not really intended). Thanks for the concern Lucknow .. Noodle is on half a tablet (analgesic) twice a day since she came home from the vets. Her little antics yesterday has probably exaserbated (spelt that word three times and can't get it right .. where is spell check when I need it!!) .. made worse ... by leaping off the top of her kennel!!! I have been speaking to persephone off line and I think she is having the 'sulks' as her demeanor changes once the collar is off. I took it off tonight to dry under her chin/neck as she was getting a damp spot on her coat and the plastic of the collar wasn't drying it out enough. Interesting to see her mood change .. BUT she was trying to get at those stitches and even tried with her back leg to scratch the area. I brushed out around the neck too as it was getting a little matted and then put it back on after I had taken her out for a piddle/poo. She had the collar off about 15 minutes ... she is now back to the 'sulk' position
  7. :D ;) ;) Took kids out for 2 hours this mornign while OH working on the house .... Noodle managed to get the collar off!! We now have it threaded through an oold collar of hers so she has two on now so I hope this will prevent it coming off again. Put Noodle in the pen out the back 1 hour later .. within 5 minutes she was out sitting on the deck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WHAT THE!!! Put her back in teh pen and fixed teh collar up - lots of electrical tape as she had managed to try and rip that off too. Put her back in teh pen and looked out the window .... within 2 minutes she was climbing up teh side of the pen (between the pen and her kennel) and pulled herself up on the kennel!! Then when I came out the back door she took a flying leap off it!! Any I was sorried about stairs and the back deck (groan) Removed the kennel and put her back in the pen. Stitches still look to be in place thank goodness from what I can see although a little loose Noodle aka Houdini!!!!! She is now carrying on out the back in the pen .. it is gonna be a lllllloooooong 2 weeks! ;)
  8. I wont be taking that collar off believe me! I just have to ensure that my OH doesn't!! He has already talked about taking it off in a couple of days ... grrrr!! NOT! I do not want her going through it all again and I also value my sleep as I can guarantee that it would be in the wee small hours of the morning that she would get into the stitches if the collar was taken off .. three guesses who would be going to the vet and departing with the hard earned cash?!! Moi!! It ain't coming off no matter how sad she looks and I feel for her.
  9. Thanks for the advice Persephone .. I do fret when she is unwell or the kids are sick ... groan ..... hate to see her dragging herself around. The vet nurse seems to think that some dogs just do not like the dragging sensation of the sutures when they walk .. fair enough I reckon (brings back childhood memories of having my appendix out and trying to walk!)
  10. Noodle was the same ... ate the Advance rehydratable when she came home for quite a few months and then 'Nope! You have GOT to be kiddin' I ain't eatin' that stuff!!" attitude started .... I tried all sorts of things to try and get her to eat it ... veggies mixed in, rice etc etc ... NOPE! Little rat bag would nose the kibble out of the food and leave a pile of it!! But,.... her archilles heal is chicken mince ... so I now mix the Advance rehydratable/Eagle pack mix with the chicken mince .... BINGO!!! Have not had to resort to the Macca's of dog food
  11. Noodle was speyed yesterday ... different reaction from the others ... she apparently is the 1% that DO care about the stitches groan. She was in overnight and is home this afternoon ... ate well tonight and drinking ok but not happy about tryign to walk and when I take her outside she just sits on the lawn. There is no redness at the stitches site but she is also wearing an Elizbethan collar .. not my idea but the vets. I asked about this before she was speyed and they were of the opinion that most dogs do what you have all described ... except her ... she continues to be 'UNIQUE'! Noodle is inside and crated at night and inside when we are at home most of the time. As the weather is mild and beautiful days I have put two of her pens together (not used since camping and since she was a baby) with her kennel inside it and she will have to be in there during the day. Once she starts feeling better I am concerned she will be up to her old antics of 'flying' off the back deck!! Any advice as to if I should try to wipe down the wound site with saline or the like or do absolutely nothing? PS Our vet did give us aftercare instructions (printed) but I did not get to ask this question as OH picked her up. Also our vet has an AH number which is fabulous!
  12. Hi I had Noodle (Hungarian Puli) speyed yesterday (turns 6 months today) and was charged $140. She had already been microchipped by the breeder so that didn't need doing. The vet clinic/hospital also kept her over night at no charge as she was pretty upset about the stitches and they suggested she stay so they could keep an eye on her and they gave her some more analgesic. We picked her up this afternoon with a bottle of analgesic and only charge $36 so I think we did really well having read other people's posts. The vet also have an after hours number that you can ring at any time. I have just rung to check on what I should expect regarding her urinating .. honestly not sure if she has gone to the toilet as she just sits on teh grass when I take her out. She seems much brighter in herself this evening and has eaten two small meals in the past 4.5 hours and drinking well. Nice to know there is an experienced person at the other end of the phone. I reckon this is a must when looking for a vet. To be honest I think their service is better than the local GP! Mind you Noodle has an Elizabethan collar as she is not to be trusted with her stitches and I don't want to be back at the vets having her resown The stitches come out in 12-14 days .. no appointment needed and no additional charge. Noodle weighed 8.5kg yesterday morning. I feel so sorry for Noodle  .. pretty hard going to not be able to chew with that darn collar on .. our 6 year old was sittin gon the kitchen floor tonight holding a chew so Noodle was able to chew it as she can't hold on with her front paws like she normally does becasue of the collar.
  13. Yep, been doing this with the chicken necks too - sometimes 2 or 3 frozen together as other members have suggested .. only problem is I think she ferrets them away and hence they defrost! grrr! Little minx! Obviously tast better after a few days ... Ick!! I will ty the chicken frames and other cute people have suggested .. only problem is .. Noodle was speyed yesterday ... in overnight as she was getting into her stitches pretty much when she woke up and they gave her some pain relief ... Poor sweetheart. She is sitting on the floor looking very forelorn in an Elizabethan collar! Not a happy girl and no bones for her for at least a week or so .. pretty much impossible to eat anything with that collar on. I took her collar off for her to eat tonight and the minute she had finished she tried to go for the stitches so back on it went. I fed her a second small meal just now with the collar on but in a small dish I had to hold .... gonna be a LONG two weeks before those stitches come out.
  14. Hi All, After the saga I had with Noodle swallowing one of her chicken neck's whole the other weekend I have become a bit paranoid about giving her bones. As a child I had a dog that my grandmother (after being cautioned from my mother) fed out dog cooked bones and he ended up with a perforated bowel ... obviously not great memories and pretty traumatic as I recall. So, apart from chicken necks (now restricted to me watching her the entire time) what do other DOL's suggest I give her to gnaw on to keep those lovely new pearly whites clean, satisfy the urge to chew and not cost me a trip to the vet with a perforated bowel? Chicken frames? (read this on the nutrition thread) Thank you.
  15. Apples, apples and appleas and she REALLY likes cold carrots out of the crisper to chew on.
  16. Glad she's eating well It still may not be a good idea to give her chicken necks cut in pieces is not ideal..they don't get much of a crunch on the way down... and a crunch or two is sufficient to start the digestion of the bone.. breaks it up, so there is more surface area for gastric juices to work on Good point .. I watched her like a hawk and she did crunch so that is a good thing. I wont be giving her chicken wings for a little while though. Noodle is back on her food which is good .. the key was I bought some chicken mine and mixed that with a little rice and Eagle Pack and that seems to have remedied the situation. Will ween off the rice and just give her a bit of the chicken mince with the Eagle Pack as I have been changing her slowly over to Eagle Pack Puppy from Advance Puppy. I might consider making some sort of popsicle/largeish block type 'chews from the chicken mince and freezing it so as she has something to chew on and I don'thave to worry about her swallowing chicken necks! Just wondering what wouldbe a good mould? Ideas anyone?
  17. Ditto ... black wire crate also bought from Ebay mine was a great price and I also bought a crate cover too. I was able to pick up too from the seller I had (close to me and in Melbourne ... let us know where you are and then it is easier to direct you to the right place) so saved on the delivery costs. I also bought a few other things from this seller .. all good quality and no problems at all with the transaction. The buyer I used was 'PuppyPower'
  18. So far so good Blossom! I had a chicken neck tonight and cut it into three bits and mixed it in with her dinner and she is wolfinf down her meal ... about flammin' time as I have been really worried about her not eating much the past few days ... been to the vet and on teh phone to them again last night after the chicken neck fiasco ... :D I watched her like a hawk tonight and she chewed!! Yay!! I mixed rice with her Eagle pack tonight and the few bits of chickn neck and she is much happier eating .. finally!! Given me grief!!
  19. Ours is nearly 6 months and we have tried Barf and now back to the dry, eating raw chicken and chicken necks and apples and carrots and no difference at all. I haven't resorted to the pumpkin, pineapple ideas as I don't want to give her the runs .. hate wiping her butt! Sorry ... just telling the truth. The vets don't seem to concerned but it is a DISGUSTING habit! My girl looks very healthy great coat ... maybe I have hit on something here that is not negative :D Don't think it is saleable though ....................grin PS I can't follow her around all day with Bitter lime spray either even though she it not too worried about it anyway. Fellow poo eating puppy owner
  20. Before anyone out there misinterprets my comment above .. no they are not doing it deliberately ... it just feels like that to us sometimes but it is the same as a new born bub I reckon but no Huggies with no leak sides makes it frustrating ...
  21. Ohhh Chugo101!!! She is gorgeous ......and what a look of "Hmmmm what can I get up to out here mum!!" As someone said, she may follow you around now but watch out .. sooon she will be up to all sorts of mischief without mum in sight Have you tried putting her on a light lead when you take her out to toilet and standing like a lamp post in the middle of the lawn where she can't get to the stones? (mine got stuck into the bark chips so I know where you are coming from)Other idea perhaps to put one of the pens that you have in teh bedroom (minus the bedding of course) out on the lawn and put her in it for 15 minutes or so until she goes. Perhaps stay out there and watch .. if you see her starting to go mark the 'Go Wee' (or whatever cammand you choose) as she is doing whatever and then praise her and let her out? Just a thought ... not really wisdom .... I was the lamp post with young Noodle .... noting interesting happened until she went to the toilet. As Noodle got bigger I have continued to say 'Go Wee' if I take her outside before she goes in her crate for the night. Just persistence. Oh yeah,... 'Urine off' works well when cleaning up inside ... and paper towel ... I nearly bought shares in the company the first few weeks. PS Good to see you have the camera out too ...... I love seeing all the photos of the pups .... a lovely 'Ohhhhhhh' moment.
  22. Just saw this thread and thought I would tell you what happened tonight (relevant) for whatit is worth .. posted on the 'Wet Noodle" thread under Puppy problems...... Well the adventures of Noodle nearly came to a grinding halt tonight ... I turned around and I think she swallowed a WHOLE chicken neck!!! She wimpered for a couple of seconds so I rubbed her back and nexk and she stopped. Usually she chews them up! What is with the swallowing!!! She wont be getting those to eat on her own ever again!! Just been on the phone to the vet clinic and it will be a wait and see .. the advice is that the neck should be broken down But I am concerned about obstructions occuring....worry wort that I am! Noodle seems fine at the moment .. just lying her on the floor next to me...........................LIFE! It ain't boring around this joint with the Noo around that's for sure!! I reckon I could have another 3 threads going on some of the stuff she does at the moment !! Silly silly girl ... sitting in the bloomin' rain, swallowing whole chicken necks .. what is she thinking ????? or more to the point ... is anything going on underneath all of that hair of hers So, I had been freezing the necks but this one had defrosted as Noodle is a bit off her food at the moment and so I gave her the neck in the kitchen .. I was on the phone to a work colleague about 2 feet away and this happened in a blink of an eye.

  24. Hi Monkeymoose! You don't say how old your pup is? We have Noodle (nearly 6 months) always on a lead when we have visitors or out and about and tell them that she MUST have four paws on the ground if she wants a pat. They have to step back and not let her touch them the minute those front paws leave the ground. In the morning Noodle is also on a lead as she is terrible excited to see the children and like you I don't want them or other people to be bowled over by her exuberance. The lead means you can also reinforce good behaviour with treats and then ween the pup off to pats. It is as much training for other people as our pups I think. More often than not now Noodle will sit and then drop and even roll over on her back to get some attention that she so desperately wants. When I let her in when I get home from work she has to sit at the back door before I let her through and encourage calmness by giving her long strokes to try and calm her down. Sometimes if she is really excited I will have a few games of fetch in the back yard to take the edge off her before she comes inside or has to be social with others....more possibility of a slightly calmer, albeit crazy pup!
