  1. ^^^ I totally agree with sandgrubber. Such a sad, preventable situation. Everyone involved messed up, dog should have been on leash, kids should have been better educated, parents should have been supervising. And the dog and the 3YO are suffering for it. But I know when I was a kid, I remember being told repeatedly not to approach strange dogs but still thinking "but its okay because I am GOOD with dogs" I cringe at those thoughts now. I own a Border Collie, I might even describe her as "timid". She has no problem with polite interactiosn with adults or kids. But to her a polite inteaction is a scratch under the chin and thats it. She doesn't even like a pat on the head much and a hug would send her reeling backwards to get out of the way. I'm always watching like a hawk when I'm around kids with her to intervene if I need to and tell them how to approach her properly, I don't want her to get frightened and ever give a nip.
  2. What a sweet update. I don't sleep well unless I have Buster cuddled up on my bed, and Quinn sleeps about half the time in her crate in my room and the other half in my bed cuddled under the blankets.
  3. I can finally get in on this thread, we've been waiting for my mums new puppy for about 6 months now. The puppies are on the ground, now to find out which one is ours. She's getting a Koolie pup to add to our rabble. Pups are about 1 week old atm. :D I'm so ridiculously excited.
  4. I started in a corner and just shaped her slowly, at first it was any movement backwards, then any small movement to turn behind me, then I got that solid so I could use the corner differently. Then I danother turn and got that solid, then another turn and got that solid and started moving it away fromt he wall.
  5. lol, I just got home from work actually and Buster's licking my toes right now.
  6. saw the big brown again thismorning, Quinn woke me up barking int he house then came into my room and pointed it out sliding rihgt by my window. Puting a snake catcher in all our phones and going to try to keep an eye on it next time and get it picked up, making us all very nervous, have seen it 4 or 5 times in the last 3 weeks. Poor dogs have been stuck indoors for 2 weeks now other than walks and in the backyard on long lines under supervision or at dusk/in rain.
  7. I'm not an obediance person (yet!) but I LOVE teaching tricks, Quinn was clicker trained and free shaped from day one so now at 17 months old shes got quiet a reportoire of cute and useful tricks. I also find because she's so aware of her own body and she has such a big "vocabulary" of behavoiurs to offer it makes training easier in every other aspect. Her newest trick is and one of my favourite ever is "Kiss Buster" where she nose touches the side of his face, it cracks me up everytime. Its so easy training her now because she has so many things to try. She will offer nose touches, paw touches, mouthing, retrieving, back up onto something, walking around it, lying down in various positions, circling me back or forwards, finding heel, sitting between my legs etc etc. My next challenge is to teach her to show me differnt part of her own body (wheres your nose? tail? paw? etc) because it will be a bit of a new concept to her. Sorry for the kind of highjack but I think trick training can be so useful for so much other training.
  8. I got Quinn as a sport dog, agility specifically but also to have a go at anything else I was interested in. As far as her agility skills I'm very happy with what I've done with her as my first agility dog, we have a lot to learn but I'm proud of where we are. But I'm pulling her from training for a few months to work on some other issues we are struggling with (movement reactivity, distraction and loosing drive under distraction) and I'd rather pull her out now and deal with this at 16 months old then persevere and not let her reach her potential by not dealing with these issues. So next year is to get into agility, obediance and would really like to train for flyball but seeing as Quinn seeing another dog running currently turns her into a lunging, barking mess I think we'll wait and see on that one. I would like to get Buster (almost 9) into obedience or rally-o just for his fun but we have more than enough aggression and anxiety issues to sort through before than. I am already dreaming of my next BC baby, no rush though. That will be 2 years away at the LEAST and probably not until Quinn is 5 or so. I already have things I would do differently in regards to raising and training Quinn so I want the time to learn as much as I can from her first. I know by the time Quinn is 5 I'll be thinking "if only I knew then what I know now" so I don't need 2 dogs in training right now.
  9. Oh and I just found this one, taken for Quinn's 1st birthday. Mac about to steal the cake, buster looked utterly defeated and Quinn looking deranged because she doesn't share food well with other dogs but she knows she has to hold a sit and eye contact before she can eat. lol
  10. This is our current pack. From L to R. Quinn is my 16month old BC. Mac is my sisters 5.5year old kelpie/mini foxy mix. Buster is my 8.5year old cattle dog mix. Adding new puppy by christmas, should be born any day now.
  11. I have a border collie and a cattle dog mix, I live with my sisters kelpie/mini foxy mix and we should be getting a koolie pup just before Christmas as my mums new dog.
  12. Quinn hates high 5's. Anytime she sees them or hears them she comes running over and jumps up looking all offended. She always had lots of oddities to do with noise sensitivity and high 5's are one that she isn't desensitized to yet.
  13. Our big girly used to mark everything, cock her leg and everything, she was top dog her entire life and marked as much as the boys do, if not more. My sisters bitch has never marked in her life, she's 5 now and when Quinn came into heat for the first time she started marking over Quinn's pee, she hasn't stopped and now wants to mark over the top of Quinn every time they go out, she still doesn't mark over Buster's pee though. interesting dynamics. Quinn doesn't mark but we are getting another female pup in a couple of months so we'll see how that changes things again.
  14. I prefer boys, my family has always had girls because my mum likes the bitchy dynamics and that extra independent streak. I prefer boys, I like that they don't have those bitchy moments and that they are more cuddly. I got a girl this time around because I thought in the long term it would work better with Buster, I adore Quinn but she's king bitch around here, her and my sister girl Mac tolerate each other but arn't crazy about each other, they spat over stupid things and generally just act like girls... especially when they are PMSing. My next dog will be a another boy for sure.
  15. She's gorgeous Vickie! You should be so proud. I've been checking your channel intermittently to look for an updated video of her and its nice to see how she's turning out.
  16. Maybe 3-5 hours 3-6 times a month. I work nights and my family works days so they usually have someone at home with them or it wouldnt work so well.
  17. Our 3 are indoors, my sisters dog is in her room, Buster has run of the house and Quinn is just now being transitioned from her crate to having the back room. We started it this way when we had 4 dogs and they didn't all get on, when the anti social dog died we just kept it this way, I was going to move my two to the yard this summer but having seen so many snakes around already including a huge brown I'm just going to keep them indoors. We're on 10 acres so we're lucky for that, my sisters dog occasionally barks when we leave but you pretty much can't hear it from the road.
  18. I havn't had a big dog of my own yet but grew up with a 45kg bull arab type girl. We got her when I was 7 as the family dog (my mum, brother, sister and I) but she was always just Mum's dog. She lived to 13 and still often got comments on being mums partners dog... mum was single so that was a hell of an assumption. I have my eyes on a Bullmastiff as one of my "one day" breeds, I'm 5"5 and not a big girl so will look forward to the comments.
  19. Saw the brown again yesterday. Quinn and I both just about stepped on it, we were out doing some training and she suddenly jumped in the air like a cat, when I looked up I saw the snake heading away as fast as it could, must have been 4 or 5ft long, did a big arc around the yard and into some bushes on the fenceline, Quinn followed it keeping her distance and barking the entire time, ignoring my calls which is a worry. Scared the crap out of her through, after all the excitement she was back tracking the way it had come, inches off the ground leaning forward to sniff the track and intermittently jumping in the air like a scared cat. She was panty and nervy inside for a good hour afterwards aswell. This week is for putting out new whipper snipper to the test and clearing out all the overgrown grass/weeds that got away from us during all the rain of the end of last summer. Snake Catcher, is there any truth to the idea that we're better off having one big snake around to keep out the smaller ones? Or are they just as likely to have all their babies around atm anyway. We're a bit stuck with what to do, atleast this one has the sense to try to stay out of the way and even yesterday was just trying to get away as fast as it could, but other than getting rid of the new rat family thats moved in to the feed shed this week and clearing away overgrown plants what can we do to make it a pretty unpleasant place to hang out? Pity their poisonous because their beautiful.
  20. I'd wait, 6 month old pups are easy because they have learned their manners and havn't tested out whether or not they can get away with stuff yet. She'll probably be a different story in another 6 months. I would also worry about the risk of the young dogs bonding more with each other than with me. My general rule of thumb is not to get another dog til you have the current dog pretty much where you want it in regards to training and bond. My boy was 8 years old when I got my new pup (wouldnt have waited quite that long but situation didn't permit new pup before then) Quinn is now 16 months old and no way could I fit in a 3rd dog, she just needs a lot of work still.
  21. We use Woodford, its an hour from us and not sure how far from where your daughter lives. We don't board often and we are paranoid about our dogs and we've been really happy with these guys.
  22. Our lot eat raw nearly every day, they usually have some sort of RMB 5 days a week, maybe one day of kibble and one day of leftover/cooked mince mix. My boy Buster still shocks the vets everytime they check his teeth, they look at his teeth then go back to their computer to check his age because they are surprised they look so good for an 8 year old dog. Ours get chicken frames, chicken necks (Quinn doesn't get these because she's a guts) turkey necks, chicken thighs, chicken wings, lamb and beef offcuts, lamb flaps, livers and heart. Pretty much anything that I find that looks interesting.
