Shy Dogs Are Dogs That Were Not Properly Socialised?
B-Q replied to laffi's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
i agree it can be both. Mac is a bit timid and her socialisation wasn't great. She's okay once she has a while to meet other dogs but she's not dog park material it would just freak her out. weird thing is, once she knows the other dogs well (like the ones here) she's an absolute bitch to them. Attacks harry on a whim now. -
Saying Hello To Other Dogs
B-Q replied to charlie mouse's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
keep working hard on recall and i wouldn't let him off till your confident you can call him back. Last thing you need is for him to run up to a dog that isn't happy about large dogs bolting up to it and you could have a lot to handle. I take buster to the dog beach on occasion, but leave when I see another dog coming, basically because I'm scared of someones dog runing up toit because i know he won't welcome it with open arms -
ARGH, i love rough coated JRT's. stripped or not their gorgeous.
-
we made a mini a frame a while back, we use that as macs turning board. our jumps are mil crates with star pickets beside them so she knows where to jump. she's a littl star
-
we don't really do it consciously. if we run out of food they miss out soemtimes. But Harry gets sooky and grumpy when he's hungry, we're feding him less to get some weight of him and he isn't very happy

my unce had a kepie that i just clicked with. I moved away from that town about 8 years ago. But when i go back every 2-3 years, i think he remembers me. So i think it woudl be the same dog to dog. He is the reason I fell for Kelpies.

I plan on going through Delta i 2009. if buster is trustworthy enough by then I'll take him. I've been considering crate training him anyway. Just incase I ever need it, it would be very conveniant.

Buster has some serious DA issues that need resolving and I need a trainer I had one lined up to go to see in Redcliffe, then my mother said she couldn't be bothered driving me down for it. She got recomended one that comes through here sometimes by the vet, but frankly, i don't know anything about them and I would rather be confdent the trainer will not be doing more harm then good, plus I'm not so great in the finance department atm so don't want to use my cash trying out different trainers. I also found an add for atriner that comes to your house, all it says on it is that her name is "abby" and it says she trains for everythign including aggression. I don't mind having to spend a fair bit, espcially if it means he can be compltley rehabilitated. but I don't know where to start.

What Should I Have Done? Did I Do The Wrong Thing?
B-Q replied to perrin's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Sorry I havn't got a lot to suggest, maybe its still pretty fresh in his mind and over time lost of love, he'll forget about it. i was playing wiht Buster one day out on a walk. He picked up his lead and started swinging it around, shaking it and such. At first I didn't stop him because it was one of the first times he's relaxed enough in public to act like a normal dog haveing a game. Jsut as I thought, okay, i better take thet before the metal clip hits him. I was just reaching down and the clip hit him on the face. I felt awful for letting it happen. He yelped, poor little guy. if anything, I'd say probably spend lots of the time playing with him in the same situation with the same things so he finds out it was an accident and isn't an everyday occurence. -
okay. first busters bit. i had to go buy fish food, so i took him down. I went at the same time my sister had to catch the bus to school. I was waiting at the bus stop with her, and a cute little SWF came up barking at him through a fence about 8m's away. I had Buster sitting beside me, and he looked at it, whined a bit, but didn't move a muscle when i told him to stay. I got him to lye down and stay and after a couple of minutes he started looking around and getting out of his tunnel vision thing. I even got a couple of glances from him when i told hm to focus. All thats very good, i know i can trust him pretty close to fences wiht barking dogs offleash. But onlead i didn't expect it to be so good. Then i got the chance to practice his offleash recall around something that might distract him, there was a bush turkey wandering around when i had him off, i know birds isn't something he's interested in chasing but he has been thinking mayebt hey are okay since he noticed harry is a bird dog. But he listened well and ignored it. And last but not least. there are some short gates in this paddock thing i walk him across. Just to stop cars so they arn't too tall. I let him off and sent him out and he was almost about to go around him and i gave him his command to jump and he just flung half sideways to get over it. I'm pretty happy with him this morning. Now to the other thing, bloody mac. I locked her in the garage when i left, i was going to e 30-45 minutes. When i left the barked, barked, howled, yipped, barked, yipped and barked. I figured she would stop after i while when she relised i wasn;t going to come back and apologise for forgetting her and take her to. But when i turned into our street on the way home, she was STILL GOING! how do you fix a dogs barking when she only barks when everyone is leaving the house with atleast one other dog and not her?

How To Treat Canine Pack Members?
B-Q replied to KitKat's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
i usually inforce what i see as their pack structure. I don't want to throw it out whack by maybe making mac seem like a top dog and getting her hurt over it. When they are being fed, i go with sophie first, then buster, then harry, then mac. That said, Buster gets most of my attention and i do usually ignore the other dogs to pay attention to him because we have the strongest bond. -
i packed up all his stuff today. his food, his litter tray, his bed/box/hideaway that i only made about a week ago. yesterday i was more numb. today i just feel like crap
-
I found him. beside the house. i can't believe it. he's always been healthy, well fed, well cared for. And i don't know what happened. He was the absolute love of my life. I've had with for almost 3/4 of my life. I've known him since the day he was born. He went missing yesterday, i was going to go to school today but i got there and told mum i couldn't go so she just took me home. I went for a walk to find him, but couldn't, got home and remembered the dogs acting funny aroudn the side of the house yesterday, i walked down and could see him lying on the ground. i don't even remember what happened next. I remember i kept screaming and i ended up sitting on the floor in the kitchen crying. I don't know how this could happen to my special boy, i've had him since i was 7. I still remember carryign him home in the cat cage, he was only a kitten but he was so heavy. At first we thought the dogs had killed him, but we looks at him, there isn't a mark on him. So i don't think they did. Maybe he was poisoned, maybe they scared him to death, i don't know. but my Panda is gone. When my sister got Daisy, i got Panda. they were the 2 animals that saved us form everything that happened when we were kids. he was only 10! we had antoehr 10+ years together. I don't know what to do, I imagined him as an old cat dying in his sleep. I hate this. Its not fair. I know he had a good life but it feels too soon, I don't want to loose anymore pets. He'd just got so sweet the last few months, he'd come for walks with us if we walked slow enough. all four of the dogs and him down the street. i've never met a cat like him, he was everything i coud ever want and i'll never see him again. about a year ago I started getting sad because i knew he was getting old, so I've been trying to enjoy every minute i've had with him. But he was still too young. I love you Panda, I'll never forget you, don't ever forget me.

I love Schutzhund. I can only imagine the amount of training would go into a successful dog. And i don't believe its encouraging aggression, i think its teaching controlled protection. the dog doesn't know its being aggressive, its doing what its trained for. I also think its a great way to "work" dogs that were bred for (or are largely used for) protection work, like GSD's, Rottie's, Dobes etc. I'd like to get into it one day but i think there would be a lot of training just for me first. lol

in katherine we had high jump comps. But they seemed more "jump and scrabble" and buster loses heaps of confidence if he touches a jump. some of those dogs were amazing, we were gonna enter mac in because she's a great little climber. But we left town when she was about 12 months and didn't want to hurt her while she was still growing. One of my friends catte dogs won 3 years running, jumping 3m or something. We were gonna enter buster but I don't think he's even attempt it.
