If Only It Was This Easy......
B-Q replied to leopuppy04's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
lol you shoudl market this. Make your own DVD. ;) -
Thanks kja. One more question while I'm here though. I've seen a couple of camera's I might be interested in, display models and stuff but they don't all seem to come with the computer software/USB cables etc. Is this easy to buy seperate?
-
Thanks guys. Are there any other models you'd recomend as a good entry level camera? Not overly expensive, don't want to spend over $800 tops (looking at secondhand models aswell) but will give me a fair bit of flexibility?

Don't agree with it, I've been vego for coming up on 4.5 years now and vegan for almost a year. I did look into a vegetarian diet for Buster, not because I think dogs shouldn't eat meat but because he honestly doesn't like meat very much. not as much as he loves his vegies and I've seen him pick tofu over chicken before, he's a weird little dog. He's funny about food and he thinks meat is icky. He's got better over time though. I decided not to, I'm vego for ethical reasons and imo its unethical to force an unsuited diet on an animal that needs meat. If she wants to do that why not get an animal that doesn't require meat. I do think a dog could survive on a vego diet but thrive? And I would worry too much about problems cropping up later like bone issues from not enough calcium and stuff like that.

lol our poor 4 constantly get batted and swatted at when they get in the way... honestly they are too scared to stare the Siamese in the face, its hilarious.

So I'm a total beginner but I have really wanted a decent DSLR for a couple of years, I finally have some money to play with and have a few big family get togethers coming back I wouldn't mind having it for plus photo's of Buster etc. I've decided I probably want a Nikon D60. I don't want to pay over say about $800 tops. Saw this on Ebay, would you suggest I get it? I havn't had a chance to get into a shop yet to check their prices and probably won't be able to till next week atleast so thought I'd ask here. http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi...e=STRK:MEWAX:IT

10 Things I Know About Buster 1. He's my first dog My family have always had dogs but he;s my first actually all mine dog. 2. We found him in a car park Someone dumped him in the middle of town when he was a puppy, poor little thing was about 8 weeks old, covered in fleas and ticks. We couldn't find his owners and then when he tried to give him away no-one wanted an ugly cattle dog puppy (he really wasn't very good looking till he got older) but he tried really hard and fitted in really well so we kept him. 3. He has a "happy run" its where he runs flat out, mouth wide open, back end tucked in tight and his front legs flying high in the air. Most entertaining thing I've seen in ages. 4. He's happy to wear clothes You can dress him in nearly anything and he just tolerates it 5. He's very finicky about food As soon as he is stressed he stops eating, he doesn't eat very much to begin with and he never really overeats. 6. He's very reserved when he first meets people But once he's decided they're alright, he loves the attention 7. When he was younger he used to "save" us from the pool We'd start swimming and he's swim out, grab our hand and drag us back to the step over and over for weeks until he relised we were atually okay. lol 8. He's not a barker He very rarely makes noise, if he does, you always pay attention 9. He is severley DA but as soon as a dog walks INTO his yard he's fine with them. 10. I love his tail Its so awkward, the one bone on the end sort of swivels like a joystick and he hates it being touched.

What Do You Feed Your Dogs
B-Q replied to encouraging_angels's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I did part raw/part Orijen with Buster, he did okay. I switched to completley raw for a few months and it wasn't great for him. Now he eats probably 50%raw, 20% Artemis kibble and 30% restairant leftovers. I work in a bistro so a couple of nights a week I bring home Eye Fillet, Rump Mignon and Porterhouse for him lol, aswell as fish, chicken breast, leftover vegies etc. This works really well for him, lots of energy, loves his food and I've seen a big difference in his coat condition. -
Loose Lead Walking - What's The Best Way?
B-Q replied to poochmad's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I tried the "be the tree" method with Buster, aswell as the "turn around and go the other way" method and neither relaly helped too much. I ended up with a clicker, a couple of small steps C&T and working up over a couple of weeks. Now he is a pleasure to walk, I'd prefer him walk closer back beside me but seeing as he still genuinley seems to enjoy pulling on the leash, he seems more comfortable out ahead of me and I can live with that. -
I love my clicker. Its helps me be really clear with Buster and helped him come out of his shell. Its such a positive experience for him. He doesn't like to fail so its great for taking him through baby steps and i LOVE that look on his face when I see him starting to work something out in his head. http://www.clickersolutions.com/ is a good site to check out. I really like its articles. Make sure you arn't making "Good Boy" your release word. I did this with Buster without relising it, because as soon as he'd finish a stay or a good heel or whatever I would say "good boy" and praise. He was doing exactly as asked because I'd taught him that as a release word and as soon as I said "good boy" he'd think the stay/heel etc was over. I went back and taught him "okay" instead and added a no reward marker, which is good for him because its not harsh, it just gives him another chance to retry. A clicker is only a marker, so you could even use a ball point pen as the marker if you wanted. Also practice first with timing games to teach yourself better timing before you start with the dog, like throwing a tennis and aiming to click at the peak of its ark.

I gave Buster one and Mac one last night, neither had a clue what to do with them. Mac was scared of hers lol. I ended up cooking them into stock, grabbing the bits of meat I coul for the cat and keeping the stock to put over thier biscuits every once in a while. Atleast they didn't go to waste.

Awesome! He hasn't had anything fish thats not out of a can or dinner scraps so this will be interesting.

I just saw salmon heads cheap at coles and bought a couple, thought I should check firs that they will be right to feed to Buster?

Aggression And Natural Protection.
B-Q replied to Just Midol's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Hmm, I might not know wnough to answer this but heres my opinion as of now. Harry, he had all the right socialisation with dogs and people. He was treated well by us and didn't have any bad experiences. But a combination orf poor breeding and whatever happened to him before we got him at 4months old and he has matured into a dog that can only be trusted with one other of our dogs, me, my sister and my mother. I do think what he has is a lot of fear aggression, he is insecure in a lot of situations and he shows that. However the difference is that thanks to good leadership, he doesn't act out when with my mother. He can be in the vet surrounded by people and dogs and just lie on the floor at her feet. He can walk past people and other dogs fine but in no way are they to get in his face. On top of that he has a massive protective streak. A point where he is different from "I'm agro because I'm scared", in some situations, he is very confident in himself, situations where there could be an actual threat. He is your typical ACD in that I have no doubt he would give his life for any of his people. He's the most interesting dog I've met yet behaviourally and he's in no way that perfect controlled protection but he's a good dog and he tries really hard. -
This video was made by someone on another forum I'm a member of, it gets to me everytime and always reminds me how much we'll be missing out on if we loose these dogs. I love how versatile they are. http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=btMoqE-ZKrQ Thought it was worth a look.

Using Food As A Training Tool
B-Q replied to persephone's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I use food with Buster. I'm happy with it, he isn't really into praise, and not very interested in toys, especially outside the yard. I don't have a huge list of things I can use as a reward but I do sometimes use letting him get into the car as a reward because he loves the car more than life itself. It took me a couple of years to get him confident enough to take a treat from me when we were outside the yard, now he will ocasioanlly chase a stick or play a short game of tug but he's a long way off being able to use it as a reward in training. I also clicker trian him a lot because I've seen a massive improvment in him since I started and its much easier to click and throw him a small treat than play a game of tug. -
RIP Xander. I saw your post in the Dane thread last night but had no idea what to say. My heart goes out to you at this time. He was a special boy.

Unsociable Habits - Help Or Opinions Welcomed
B-Q replied to emmabelle's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
What about enrolling in an obediance class? I can feel your pain aswell, Buster can be really difficult, he can be so not drivey it drives me crazy, and other times he's so into it all. He's coming up to 6 years old now and has just learnt to loose leash walk, which in turn has helped with his dog aggression. His recall is 99% good except every once in a while he just decides "meh" and walks away, always makes me go wtf? -
won't be making it this time, too short staffed at work to have time off on a weekend.
