  1. I would love to go, Quinn will be 9 months in Feb, would her being young be a disadvantage at all?
  2. I love teacing tricks, Buster doesn't like doing a lot. He stresses if I take him outso I tend not to, he doesn't do any sports and he's pretty lazy but he loves shaping games. Quinn I've probably taught as much as Buster already and she's only 4 months old, I figured I;d just get her to start learning while she was a sponge. She needs the stimulation and I love watching her learn. Plus its impressive at puppy class. lol
  3. Thanks Monah, I'm pretty partial to her myself. I can't wait to see what she looks like all grown up.
  4. I was looking at koolies aswell but was originally looking for a BC, decided to just keep looking and wait for the right puppy to turn up and it was her. Heres a couple more pics of her but she's still only a baby.
  5. Yea thats a concern, probably not practical to cram them into a backpack or the back seat of the car. We did know a woman that was crazy about her QH's, in the big flood in '98 her husband came home to find she had moved as many as she could to higher ground and bought the rest upstairs in the house.
  6. We flooded when we lived in the NT in 2006. We were lucky that we had a friend on the dry side of town happy to take us in. He already had 2 dogs of his own, so they were tied around the front of his house. We had our big girl Sophie and Buster tied around the side of the house so we didn't have to deal with intro's etc because none of the dogs were overly lovey and it was a stressful time. We also had puppy Mac so we kept her inside with us, along with the JRT another guy had that was staying with him for the flood aswell and our cat that we kept locked in the bedroom, we had 2 rabbits in seperate hutches that we took with us and another woman we had staying aswell had her budgie. Not easy, but they were the first thing we packed up. We had a bag of clothes each and the computer in the car but we felt awful we couldn't take the fish from the back pond. One thing that worries me now is that if we have an emergency now we have the horses to take care of aswell.
  7. Yes, my little Quinn is. She isn't conformation bred though.

  9. Buster is very reactive towards dogs, he's come a long way in the last few years but his behaviour is the same every time. It used to be whining, pulling, yelling etc. Now its a very intense stare and a bit of tension on the leash, same every time, more intense as space is decreased.
  10. Buster wanted to kill Elliot when we first brought him home, like he would jump up and try to grab him out of our arms. It was a week before we even allowed them in the same room, Buster on leash, closely supervised and Elliot (the cat) loose. Buster was rewarded for anything appropriate. ie: not looking at Elliot, looking at me, trying for friendly interaction, not being quiet so intense, relaxing, lying down etc. It took about 2 months before i started letting him offleash under strict voice control when directly supervised. Probably another 2 months till I was happy to leave them alone in a room together for short periods of time while I was in earshot and probably another 2 months till Elliot was not getting harrassed when in the backyard. A lot of work but honestly, it paid off. Buster is now bombproof with him. He won't even look at Elliot incase he gets a paw to the face. lol. Elliot is a brilliant cat though, he knows how to keep a household of 4 drivey dogs under control and all of them now have a very healthy respect for him. Every once in a while as they walk by he'll grab one of their legs and try to bite them, he's never extended a claw to them but he does raise a paw to them if he think s their out of line, rarely touches them though, he's been here almost 3 years now, couldn't imagine life without him now.
  11. Only 3 other dogs in my street. 2 are working breed mixes like our 3, one is a lab.
  12. Be prepared for a 15 year commitment. We give dogs the time we can spare, the space we can spare and the love we can spare. In return they give us their all. Its the best deal mankind ever made.
  13. I like http://www.ellaslead.com thats where I get Busters leads.
  14. I go every 6 - 12 months. Especially now that Buster is 7 I don't want something sneaking up on us. Especially since we lost Sophie I'm more paranoid, I took him in last week for blood tests because he's drinking more, eating more and the lightest he's been his entire life. I feel bad about Sophie, she was fine right up until the night before she died. Happy, herself etc. She whinged a littl ebut we thought it was her athritis so we just gave her her painkillers. The night before she was restless, the next morning she was off her food and obvisouly in pain so we took her into the vet that mornign and she was gone before midday. Turns out she had a tumour the size of both my fists wrapped around her aorta artery. We didn't even know.
  15. I want to undertake Cert IV in Vet Nursing next year, I was looking it up on the TAFE Qld site and all I could find was this. http://www.tafe.qld.gov.au/cis/index.php?s...p;course_id=445 I don't know if its just mycomputer illiteracy or what but I'm finding it hard to find info about it. I'm guessing looking at this I'd be doing it by distance which is cool, I remember reading somewhere that you need 15 hours a week paid empliymetn at a Vet's to undertake it. Has anyone here done theirs in Qld? How long is it? How expensive? Do you think it set you up well?
  16. Name: Buster Nickname: Buzzy Fuzzy Breed: Kelpie/BC/Cattle Dog/? Gender: Male Age: 7.5 years Where did you get them from? Found him a carpark as a puppy. How often do you exercise your dog? Everyday, usually just a run around the paddocks. Do they know any commands? The basics (sit stay down etc) rollover, bow, say please and a few others. Compete in any dog sports? Nope Favourite treat: Toast Favourite toy: PVC pipe Funny habits or quirks: Throwing himself violently into the ground and rolling in joy What's their personality like? serious, reserved and thoughtful Do they get along well with other dogs? He's fne with any dog that wanders into the yard but wants ot eat everything when I take him out. Are they scared of anything? Nothing What training methods do you use? Positive reinforcement? Corrections? I used a lot of corrections when he was younger, did a lot of reading on PR training and now never use more than a gruff voice, he's a very soft dog and I proibably did a lot of damage early on, thankfully he's very forgiving. Some piccies of me beautiful boy.
  17. When we were moving down from the NT it was amazing how many people were surprised we were happy to pack up 4 dogs and a cat and bring them with us. They all seemed so shocked. Now that I'm looking at getting another dog people keep enquiring about whether or not I'm going to get rid of Buster. wtf?
  18. I suppose I don't expect Buster to protect me but I wouldn't be surprised if he did. He's wary of strangers to start with but has never been pushed past his threshold. I do feel much safer with him though. When our old girl Sophie (RIP) was younger she was a fantastic dog. She was some sort of bull arab type dog, every evening at dusk she would do a lap of the perimetre of the houseyard just to check then come back to the house for the night. She once defended my little sisters maltese mix who was being attacked by another dog. She got in, stopped the attack and then backed off. She also once jumped between my little sister and a lunging dog, no fight insued, the dog backed down right away. She had perfect judgement, she never started a fight, she just finished them, I'd seen her stop dogs in theur tracks so many times just by standing her ground and looking at them. My sister and I used to take her out with us whenever we were alone from a fairly young age to keep us safe. I don't feel safe without dogs in the house, all our dogs have always been somewhat protective but we've never really had typical people-loving breeds.
  19. I work really odd hours, most weekends I don't get home till 2:30am, I sneak in quietly as to not wake the rest of my family and find Buser in my room, quietly wagging and waiting for me to open the door. We had tradies over today so I had him in his crate while I was having a nap before work (oh the joys of hospitality) and he whinged and whined till I let him out, once out all he wanted to do was jump up on the bed and go to sleep beside me. He calms me when I'm anxious, he reminds me whats important, I know he'll be there for me till the day he dies and his memories will comfort me even after then. I don't like being emotional around other people but Buster is a great shoulder to cry on. We give dogs the time we can spare, the space we can spare and the love we can spare. In return they give us their all. Its the best deal mankind ever made.
  20. I just got home to the same thing, I've only been gone 2.5 hours for work. Buster's 7 and its still such a joy to have him bounding around like an idiot just because I came home. Its not like he's been lonely, the rest of the family was here all evening lol.
