  1. I don't know. I don't think its fair if you get a dog and never take it out. But my Buster rarely gets walked, as soon as he leaves the yard he is stressed to the max, we are working on it but probably nto as much as we should. We are on 10 acres and he is comfortable in teh paddocks so I take him out there most days and we train a few times a week. Quinn I have to get out atleast 5 days a week, preferable everyday and we have to train and play everyday, I knew I wanted a dog that took more work and its paying off. Buster is most comfortable in his yard where he feels safe, I don't think he's suffering one bit, doing as little as I do with him with Quinn would be sending her nuts.
  2. Good on you for being so responsible about him. I do kinda hope if I ever have kids its while Buster is still around, I don't let him meet kids or anything now because he hasn't had much to do with them and I don't know how he'd react with their unpredictable behaviour. Although he has had a kid run up behind him and pat him without warning and he's had no reaction. But I think once he relied which kids were "his" kids he'd be an amazing dog to have around.
  3. we used to put out saucers of beer I remember.
  4. Merry Christmas Troy!!! Thanks for another year.
  5. Lol. Thankfully Buster stays away from scaly things, Mac's terrier comes out in her though and I worry about her with snakes. Yesterday we found a half grown bush turkey in the yard. Quinn proceeded to bark her box off at it in terror and Buster came zooming out of nowhere to take it out. Thankfully he stopped when we yelled and it made haste getting out of the yard.
  6. It took Quinn a while to catc on but she's easy to walk now. I used "be a tree" and lots of reward when she was in the right space, short, low distraction sessions a couple of times a day and she's started excelling. I also used kikopups videos as a reference.
  7. I was just looking at the thread in the breeders sections on homing pups with people living in apartments and I was kinda shocked that it was just a flat out no for a high energy breed. I lived in a house without a fenced yard with Buster last year and aslong as I got him out twice a day for a walk he cruised around fine. I would also happily take Quinn into apartment liv9ing so long as I could get her out atleast 2-3 walks a day and atleast 1-2 hours of offleash time she'd handle fine. Whats everyone else think re: raising dogs in apartments.
  8. There are vids like that all over youtube. It scares the crap out of me. I did lots of work with Quinn when I got her and in all the time I've had her she has quietly growled once at me around food. The other dogs were hassling her and then I came over a patted her from behind and I don't think she relised it was me. h was a bit snatchy and not keen on me coming near her food but we worked through it and now don't have issues. I could never make a joke of even a quiet growl.
  9. Its a desexing tattoo. Its done with a clamp and ink when they are knocked out.
  10. I had this problem with Mac and Quinn. Calling them in every time wasn't working so one day when I noticed the kids out I called the girls up, started a distance away from the fence and played with them, played a bit of look at that and slowly moved in over about 15 minutes. I was prepared for much more work but they seemed to get over it pretty fast and its not really much of an issue anymore.

    Adolescence

Quinn turns 7 months on christmas day, I am nervous about her naughty teenage stage but I think if you put in good groundwork before, keep implementing rules and boundaries when their being pains in the butts and do what you hasve to to keep them safe during this naughty time. (ie: keeping the dog onleash as it might not come when called) you just have to wait it out and keep consistent, they'll come through it. 4 years ago we had 2 puppy around 8-10 months old on christmas, we lost a few presents from under the tree that year.
  12. Ofcourse, I left Buster at home for 3 months last year, I flew him down to NSW to meet me, watched him get off the plane. As soon as I went over to his cage he looked all confused for a few seconds and then I saw it click and it was all back to the same as always, I definetly wouldn't worry about 4 weeks.
  13. Yes, they get some sort of meat/bones 5-7 days a week. All types except cooked, started as soon as we get them. This was Quinn's first night home. Spoilt thing dragged it into the middle fo the kitchen floor and got away with it. The cat gets wings and necks occasionally aswell, we had to teach him to eat them when we got him at 9years old, he didn't know what they were for.
  14. Oooh, nice, where did you get that from? xxx I have not even started my shopping yet, for anyone Will get on the net and start tomorrow(for doggies), later for everyone else! :D I got it from http://animalaffair.com.au/ I don't ususally like s=designer type things but I love the Hamish Mcbeth stuff
  15. I bought them a leash each at the beginning of November but I caved and gave them to them early. So now Buster has a tuff toy and Quinn has a new collar. This one.

    Toilet Training

I had a close eye on Quinn, took her out whenever she got up and started sniffing around, woke up, finished eating, got a drink, went near the door etc. It took me a while to get into routine and I lost a lst of sleep for the first 6 weeks but she's reliable now. She's the first puppy I've trained without being harsh, previous dogs we rubbed their nose in it and they got in trouble. I didn't want to train this way and this time I was really gentle, took her out and set her up to do right, when she had accidents we quickly raced outside and she did catch on.
  17. I'm hanging to get a Ruthless one when Quinn is grown up. For now she and Buster have their leashes from http://www.ellaslead.com The woman that makes them I know from another forum, she strted making strong leashes for her very DA APBT so eventhough they arn't leather, I trust them completly. She's moving into leatherwork now and she made Buster's leather collar aswell.
  18. Thats scary, I always keep my dogs on lead because if something crazy happens like this I want the legal leg to stand on. Buster is DA and very controllable offleash but he never gets off because if another dog runs up to him and he's offleash I have no defence. I'd suggest maybe clipping the leash to your belt if it doesn't make a difference whether the dog is loose or not, but it will to the law. As I found out recently, the law is there to protect the stupid people that don't have dog sense not the dogs trying to act like normal dogs. So just make sure you know the laws back to front and follow them to keep your dog safe.
  19. I would hate to have to desex a dog before 12 or 18 months old, I'm so appreciative that I can wait with Quinn.
  20. A crate, Quinn is the first puppy I have raised with one and I will never go without again, it made hosuetraining easier, her sleeping patterns better and she's 6 months old now and we havn't come home to find the loungeroom destroyed because she hasn't got the chance. Collar, whatever food you are going to go onto, bedding, toys (you want something that your puppy CAN chew on and play with, provising something else means its easier to teach them whats appropriate and not appropriate to play with) find a good puppy school. Socialise, socialise socialise. Quinn was my first puppy, we've always had them at home but she is the first one I've had to put in the hard yards to raise. The first few weeks were very hard with 5 hours sleep a night, lots of play sessions and frequently going outside for toilet breaks, training everything from scratch (sit, stay, lie down etc) but now she is an absolute joy, worth every second and growing into a gorgeous dog.
  21. I always hate this, it hasn't happened with Quinn yet which I am SOO greatful for because she is so shy and I've done so much work trying to get her confidence up with other dogs and when out and about. A dog only has to give her a hard stare from across the road and she's on edge. I don't know if she could come back from being rushed like that. Buster ont he other hand will fight anything and everything that gets within his striking distance, thats why the "he's friendly" excuse shits me to tears, I don't care if they are friendly, Buster is not ... mainly due to so many "fiendly" OTT dogs rushing him when he was a baby.
