A beagle would tick all the boxes if you allow for a few more kilos in weight. Guaranteed to get on with your other dog, the cat and the baby. I promise you not all beagles are crazy like people seem to think. Many are very calm in personality. Most are somewhere in between. A good breeder will be able to tell you which puppy is best suited to your situation. They are as active as you want or the best couch potatoes ever. They love to be indoors with you but will happily spend time outdoors especially with a canine friend. A brush once a week is all they require. My grandson and a few of his beagles LOL

We won a bag so I used it. Most beagles will eat just about anything so they aren't a guide to palatability. I couldn't stand the smell either and was glad to finish the bag

Our experiences: Manly Road Vet First pregnancy - they were able to tell me there were 6 puppies implanted but only 4 viable (no heartbeat) so they would be absorbed. Second pregnancy - I was told there were 4 puppies but 5 delivered. Big ultrasound machine intended for humans. Gerry at Greencross Did my last ultrasound and he said 2 puppies - she delivered 4. It seemed very unclear compared to the Manly Rd Machine. Xrays are not always correct either. Last bitch was x-rayed and told 9 but she delivered 11. Many breeders don't scan but will x-ray in the last week. I prefer to have a rough idea on how many puppies early on to feed the expectant mum accordingly. Some bitches when pregnant would eat none stop if you let them :D

Congratulations to all with puppies born - they are beautiful So sorry to those who have lost bubs!

As she still has possibly 8 days to go I will say Eleven :D

I too would be feeding four times a day - 4 times her normal food, plus adding puppy milk or formula to her water several times a day if that will make her drink more. First food early and last meal late. I think you need to supervise all feeds to make sure the pup not gaining is getting the best teats every feed. At least you will know quickly if this is the problem or not. :)

Vet Practices? Does This Sound Right Or Wrong?
hilaryo replied to Partipaws's topic in Breeders Community
Around 3 years ago I paid over $2,000 for an c-section in the middle of the night at a Emergency vet clinic. I hate to say it but I would imagine this is fairly typical of most after hours clinics. I feel bad for your friend loosing 2 puppies and there shouldn't really have been such a long delay -
Older Dog Drinking More Than Usual
hilaryo replied to Stitch's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
This is pretty well what I thought when my then 6 year old male started drinking more than usual. I took him to the vet and they tested his urine first up and this showed the expected dilution. Blood tests which included testing for cushings revealed nothing..... -
Hilaryo, it is when the face and feet are quite reddish and almost looks like blood under a translucent skin. Probably most apparent in a white face and paw. I thought this was quite normal and soon pinks up in teh first 24 hours. Liz so you mean really red not the normal pink? I've never seen what you describe :)

Help Please - My Rottie Girl Has Terminal Osteosarcoma
hilaryo replied to Noire's topic in Palliative Care Forum
So sorry about your girl Noire - you must feel so sad I'm sure others will reply with some sensible advice re the cancer and pain relief. Some years ago now we had to put our 14 yr old german shepherd to sleep due to arthritis. We kept him going for 6 months with treatment until we knew it was time....I'm sure you will know with your girl when her quality of life is gone and it is time to let her go. -
Actually if you do a bit of research (which I have just done  ) the most frequent incubation period is around 2-5 days. I did find one link that said 2-14 days but most said a shorter period of time. My own experience with Canine Cough caught at dog parks with obviously infected dogs () was around 3 days. It's a pain in the arse isn't it and worrying even though most dogs will recover with no treatment!

Looks like lots of puppies coming your way :)

Interesting... I always considered this normal and healthy I would be worried if their muzzles and feet didn't go pink. When we lost a pup last november the pink fading as she was dying

Fungal infection perhaps? This produces scabs and spreads quickly.

Perforated Intestine - Update: Peritonitis
hilaryo replied to Lisey's topic in General Dog Discussion
Oh no! So very sorry Lisey Run free sweet Lola xxx -
Napisan - buy the one for nappies. I use it regularly to get rid of doggie odours and if we've had had any puppies peeing on bedding. Make sure it's the correct strength versus water and rinse particularly well. If something won't fit in the laundry tub, I soak overnight in the bath, or if you have a top loader, in the washing machine.

I am looking for suggestions of people who can film and produce a quality DVD / video of a specialty show in Brisbane. Any suggestions will be appreciated!

Ours are 3 weeks old tomorrow. Poor Blondie  and just because she's a little bit special (taken 5 days ago) Mum has done a great job with no need to supplement although we will start weaning early to help her out from Monday.
