Getting A New Pup, What Do I Need?
Kylie and the black Lab replied to SteveMachine's topic in Puppy Chat
I vote Kobe too. That is a cool name!! -
Hi there - I gather you have a choc lab???? We have a blackie (jee - did the name give it away!) . She is 18 weeks and ever since we brought her home we have been feeding her Royal Canin Junior Labrador. She really likes it and we have never had a problem with her having the runs. It is expensive, but I highly recommend it. She likes it that much we can even use individual kibbles as training rewards. Are you feeding your lab anything else to give it softies?? We noticed Jedda was a bit softie when she had a large bone with marrow in it. Now she is just on chicken drumsticks, lamb cutlets and lamb necks and they all agree with her. I like that the Royal Canin is breed specific so at least you know it is especially for lab's. Good luck.

Teaching A Puppy To Walk On A Lead
Kylie and the black Lab replied to rooster78's topic in Puppy Chat
Puppy preschool actually recommended a "gentle leader". We got Jedda used to the lead (even though she still trys to chew it when excited!). But she was pulling heaps with just a collar and lead. Then we progressed to the gentle leader. as it goes around her nose, she didn't like it at first. After 2 walks she was used to it and is sooo good on walks now. Sometimes she still needs to be conned to put it on, especially if she is hyper... bit of cheese does the trick. Cheers, Kylie -
Off Leash Dog Parks...

Thanks everyone for your feedback. The reason I ask is that Jedda is at Junior school at the moment and she is definately a social butterfly, just loves playing with other dogs.... Can definately see that some owners are morons - even see that just walking her in our neighbourhood. I think doggy play dates are definately a better idea. She already has a "boyfriend" at Jnr school whose owner is keen for them to continue socialising once school finishes. Can you believe that the other morning a guy was walking a retriever and a cattle dog and was carrying a large pole. When they tried to lunge at Jedda on the other side of the road, he started hitting them to control them!! I was gobsmaked and yelled out to him how wrong he was to do that. I have a fair mind to follow him next time I see him, note where he lives and report him. As for Jedda, she wagged her tail, sat on command and I rewarded her with a piece of cheese. Positive reinforcement hey!! Cheers, Kylie -
I too agree with the inside thing. Jedda only now sleeps outside at 4 months and she is comfortable with it. Even last night we brought her into the laundry at 11pm because of the big storm in Sydney. She slept right through. What about baby gateing off a part of the kitchen if the laundry is too small??? Even still with the laundry... our laundry has only around 3m x 2m moveable space and at 12.5kgs, Jedda is happy to sleep in there during rough whether. Please bring your lab inside... though not for good... at least give the poor pup a migration period to the great outdoors. That's what we did and it worked really well. Cheers, Kylie

I'm Bored At Work - Can You Tell
Kylie and the black Lab replied to Kylie and the black Lab's topic in Puppy Chat
JEDDA went to the BEACH yesterday!!!! She was a classic. We kept her in her harness and on lead so she wouldn't do the bolt (still mastering recall!!). She loves the car - sat all the way to Collaroy with her head on the window and then dug and ran on the shore. We then carried her in the water and hubby stood 5 metres away from me and Jedda swam straight to me!! Funniest little dog paddle. We were both absolutely cracking up! She went back in like 5 times. What a fantastic day for our fur child!!! She was totally pooped and slept until 7.30am thismorning!! Just thought I'd share!! Cheers, Kylie -

Jedda photo's are coming...... I am on hol's from work and on a library computer so i can't upload any photos' . Promise there will be some soon as she is a beautiful girl -
Jedda is now 4 months old and quite big (12kgs). She finished puppy pre school and is now at junior school. She is quite headstrong, but not aggressive at all. She just loves playing with other dogs whether they are puppies or not. She even played with an old cattle dog on our walk thismorning. I was wondering if she is too young to go to the off leash park in our area. What age do you think that dogs are ready for this?? She has just about mastered the command of "come" from a distance with distractions (she does it at Jnr school) Thanks!! Kylie

;) Yeah I remember when Jedda was 8 weeks old.... i was the one with separation anxiety!! :D We were lucky it was over Chrissy and hubby and I were both home. I had rotties my whole life until now as hubby wanted a yellow lab and we compromised on a blackie. We are both stoked - she is the best girl ever. So clever and learning so quickly. Growing so quickly too!! And most certainly mooching for food at every opportunity. Last night we had leftover lasagne in a tray in the fridge... i left the fridge door open for a minute to get the milk and she was licking the cheese off the top!! (we still ate it though :p !!) I am a converted now - black labs rule!! Cheers, Kylie -

I actually wrote all our neighbours a letter advising them we were training her to sleep outside. Yesterday I saw 2 of them and they said they don't even hear her! We live on a corner block with a vacant block next door and one neighbour behind (who says he doesn't hear her) So I am a considerate neighbour!!! -

Walking My Puppy And Puppy School
Kylie and the black Lab replied to happystarz's topic in Puppy Chat
we use a lead called a "gentle leader" . puppy school recommended it. Jedda didn't like it at first, but after a couple of days she is used to it - and no more pulling or chasing at all as the lead acts on their natural instinct to move their head (no pain of course). We also use small amounts of cheese on walks - to stop at corners, sit and heel as well as "watch me" when a distraction walks past. Not rewarding every time, but most. Cheers, Kylie -
Patience and persistence!!! we just kept taking Jedda outside - like every half and hour and saying "pee pee's" until she went. After 10 mins outside and she hadn't gone, we would bring her back inside and immediately do a u-turn out again. We repeated this process until she did "pee pee's". We didn't play with her or praise her until she had gone. Pretty much the same process for "poo poo's". You will soon learn your own dogs habits of when they go. Now we just have to say "come outside for pee pees" and she comes. There are still a couple of accidents every few days and she still enjoys sh*tting in the front room when no one is watching. But we are getting there. Jedda is 17 weeks now and honestly up until about 2 weeks ago we were at a loss as well. Everything sort of clicks over with time as they get a bit older. Just pick one way of training and reinforce it all the time. Good luck, Kylie

no she's a Driftway from Doribank up at Raymond Terrace...... who has her owners wrapped around her otter tail!! -
That is funny Benny. Yes madam Jedda has a bit of a shoe fetish. Stole one of my work shoes and chewed the leather off the heel. Didn't realise the next morning, was in a rush and walked around the office all day with a plastic heel on one foot. When I realised, threw the other bl**dy shoe at her. I know I shouldn't have, but she is still licking out my foot odour 4 weeks later
-
Oooh, careful with the shoes. I once gave my cocker spaniel pup an old shoe of mine - the left one, which she loved. But, for the rest of her life she chewed every left shoe I ever owned. Sometimes when my foot was still in it !
-
Jedda also much prefers any belongings of ours! I have given her an old pair of Haviana thongs which she can lick my scent off and also chew until her heart is content. An old towel in the bed is also good. I think it is all about her having items that she can smell hubby and myself on.... For a heavily teething dog, those stuffed dog toys that squeek keep interest. Personally, Jedda isn't too keen on Kongs, but hey, each dog to their own!! Good luck.

Help - 4.30am Wake Up!
Kylie and the black Lab replied to Kylie and the black Lab's topic in Puppy Chat
It is still dark outside when she barks and we have a vacant block next door with no activity. At first we thought another neighbour may have his alarm going off which she may hear, but when the wake time kept varying we ruled that one out.... ...haven't quite mastered the quiet command yet! -
Hi everyone, My hubby and I have a beautiful black lab named Jedda who is 17 weeks old. She is training well, is very settled, goes to bed outside - basically does everything that you'd expect from a lab puppy except she wakes up and starts barking anytime between 4.15am and 5.30am. Does the ignore her thing really work - as we tried thismorning and she barked solid from 5.15 to 6am. Stopped for 15 mins and then started again at 6.15. We only let her inside when she stopped barking, but as soon as we let her in she started barking at my hubby again. We are walking her twice a day - morning and evening. While we are at work she has treats and toys as well as a shell pool to play in..... so is this just an attention thing???? Any advice is well received!! thanks heaps!!!
