white crumbly poo with my dogs means too many raw meaty bones...they often need something to soften it up a bit as some of them are uncomfortable with constipation when their poo is like that.

I purchased Pernease powder for my nearly 14yr old greyhound a couple of weeks ago and I also put my 7 yr old greyhound on it as he was showing signs of arthritis setting in. After about 1 week I have taken both of them off it again as I couldn't stand the stink of the wind they both had. The nearly 14yr old has many problems like demeture and horrible panting attacks which I have now put down to panic attacks and for 1 yr now she just drops her poop anywhere in the house and seems to have no control over it. Our greyhound vet thinks this is to do with the dementure. My point is for nearly 1 yr her poop has been huge and frequent but nice and easy to pick up, nicely firm formed mounds which leaves no mess and easy to clean up fortunately for me. Since she has been on the Pernease powder it is disgusting cow patty type mess which is really hard to pick up. The 7yr old has had the same wind and cow pats so I just wondered if anyone else has discovered this with Pernease powder?

We have had 2 of our old female greyhounds do that, it looks like they are nodding at you all the time. I have never taken any notice of it because my elderly mother's head shook like that for about the last 10 yrs of her life and she had no idea she was doing it.

The GAP VIC green collar only means that dog has been temp tested with small fluffy dogs and I think if they are extremely good with small fluffy dogs they then get tested with cats and chooks are another thing again.

That is a very rash statement to say every racing greyhound is fine because it's just not true.

GAP Victoria is a department of Greyhound Racing Victoria and there for funded by GRV. We have 6 retired greyhounds of which 3 are younger males and 3 older females. The youngest girl is nearly 10 and doing fine, the next is a 12 yr old girl with only 3 legs who has always struggled walking long distances but apart from that she is just fine until the last couple of months is really ageing. All she does is sleep and can only manage to walk 3 houses and she is exausted now. We bought her a lovely stroller/trailer but she is very nervous and just won't get in it so sadly only gets a drive for a break out of the house now. The oldest was 13 last September and the one who is really struggling and very sad to see like she is. She is also the oldest greyhound we have owned the last girl passed away at 13 and 1 week. I read a thread on here recently about old dogs and dementure and thought our girl was doing really well but since then she is really going down hill. If she goes out to the toilet by herself and doesn't come back inside straight away I have to go and find her as she tends to get lost in the small backyard. The worst thing is also the bowl problem. It was the occassional little parcle left around the house but we just don't walk around the house without shoes now because she leaves greyt big long fully formed sausages all over the place for us to step in. It is funny though the way she just squats and plop, plops right in the middle of her meal. And her panting is terrible and we just don't know whether it is pain related or not. They are the best dogs to own the dear oldies though.

Frontline flea spray isn't a permanent prevention neither is CAPSTAR they need to be repeated every day if that's all you are going to use. Advocate or any other flea product needs to be given every month not just as you remember for them to work if you have fleas that bad. Advocate also prevents heart worm so your pets should be heart worm tested before first application. The appropriate Advocate should be given for the weight of your pet like over 25kgs or what ever, as well a seperate one for your cats. Advocate is supposed to kill adult fleas but giving a Capstar first and treating all the surrounding enviroment plus doing all your animals at the same time is the only real sure way to get rid of a bad infestation of fleas. I have had my 6 dogs on Advocate and now sentinel spectrum and I often bring home dumped greyhounds for GAP who are full of fleas and so far they haven't spread to my dogs because they are treated as per directions on the packet. That was my thought - I have 6 large dogs and they do their's all over the yard especially the 2 old girls just squat right in the middle of the path even outside the patio door. I pick up twice a day and before each pick up the flies are terrible but after the pick up and poop bagged and put in a seperate bin and closed and pooper scooper put in a bucket of water there isn't a fly to be seen. Their poo's are nice and firm even to the stage they are white and crumbly if they have just had bones so there is no residue for the flies to hang around for. I also pick their bowls up and put inside straight after meals which helps keep flies away. Mozzies have been our problem this year but fortunately they don't seem to bite.

Our 13 yr old greyhound sleeps on a Snooza Ortho mattress and a doona on top, that's the only thing she is comfortable on. Keeping her warm isn't a problem it's keeping her cool is our problem, she puffs and pants all year around but even worse in summer. I see your group has a lot of oldies which is greyt...I love the oldies and think there is nothing nicer than to give an oldie a home for the last year or 2 of their life. The thing I'm curious about is who pays the freight as you seem to adopt to all over the country side and have a few in foster care and adopted in Melbourne, it's no wonder they are begging for money if they pay the freight and keep the dogs kennelled for long periods too. Do you take any greyhounds in from Melbourne or send them all down from NSW? Sorry also for the questions but the person mentioned working for you Kayleigh from Pakenham is down my neck of the woods and believe me there should be absolutely no reason to freight greyhounds from NSW as we have plenty of our own down here needing rescue.

I saw the pics of Cleo in the greyhound thread a couple of days ago poor old girl. These greys rip so easily and in our experience they seem to rot away easily too. Our 13yr old girl some how managed to catch her leg groin area under our bed last summer and ripped a big hole in it and it also rotted away and needed stitching up again. Our girl puffs and pants like an old steam train most of the time these days, she was so bad that last summer she had an Echo Cardiogram in case it was her heart which according to the specialist was fairly normal for a greyhound her age. But you do have to watch what drugs vets unexperienced with greys give them. Our lot a few months ago managed to get into the kitchen tidy while I was out and got a left over corn cob from the night before and I didn't know who had eaten the half that was missing although I didn't think it would be the old girl as she has only 2 teeth but she may have picked up a chunk off the floor. So off the 4 of them went to the emergency centre as of course it was late Saturday and it was the worst thing I could have done for poor Milky as they over dosed her on the stuff they give them to make them throw up. Our greyhound vet worked out that they gave her about 4 times more than she should have had for her age and weight. She ended up having to spend the night instead of an hour and cost us $1200 just because they didn't think.

Sounds a familiar story with PetPlan. A friend of ours has had her dog insured with them for about 5 yrs with no claim at all and then recently she lost her credit card and had to cancel that account until a new card was issued. The direct debit from her card was due the next day and of course wasn't honoured but PP never notified her, by the time she realised they had cancelled the insurance but would not let her back pay the payment they said they had to start a new policy which they wouldn't do because the dog was 8 yrs old. So that dog is no longer insured with them or can be insured with anyone else

Our dogs have always been vaccinated annually mainly because they do a lot of promo's like RMS and mix with a lot of other dogs, but this year I made a decision not to vacc my 2 old girls because the 13yr old is way too frail to be pumping chemicals into and they don't mix with other dogs much these days. My vet was happy with this until I told him that our son's friend's dog had recently had parvo and we take our dogs to his place to stay the weekend frequently. He said the trouble with parvo is that it lives in the enviroment for a long time but having said that he said our dogs were done last year so they will need to be done next year which is every 2nd year and this is with the 1 year vaccine. But he normally just vaccinates them all every year so I will be discussing the young ones when they are due. And CC is a real worry for me as I know people that are getting dogs out of shelters and not quarantining them before mixing them with some of our friends dogs.

How can you stand the cigarette smoke in that place? I popped in once to get a roll of vet wrap for my greyhound who was being treated for a bruised pad by our regular vet and had to have it sock padded for 6 weeks and they kept me 3/4 of an hour ringing my vet and getting permission before they would sell me a roll of vet wrap

I am not a greyhound trainer but have 6 retired greys who I have been feeding probably 1/3 their diet is Eagle Pack and I just picked up a bag of Black Hawk on Sunday and a bag of Eagle Pack and I am going to feed them 1/2 and 1/2 to see how their condition and weight is at the end. The proof in not in the pudding if they eat it at our place because they get fed very well but will eat just about anything I dish them up. But I am extremely happy with their condition at the moment (except our old girl but she has never looked like a beauty queen) and just last weekend had them out with other greys and dogs both days and got so many comments on how wonderful they look so don't want to lose any of that. The price is the only concern for me which is the only reason I am giving the Black Hawk a try.

Sadly it's not only brood bitches they keep until very old age. Two of our old girls got put into GAP at 9 and 10.5yrs and neither had raced or been bred with just kept. I don't think the last 9 yr old girl we took in had seen another living person in her life except her owner. A year later and she is still petrified of kids and just learning to trust our adult son who is a very quietly spoken man, she is starting to come out of her shell a bit with some women. Saying that though she is living a very happy and playful life with us and our other greyhounds. She adores us all just not other people. Greytpets I am surprised they are going to desex her after a few days of vomiting and now diarrhoea. She will be dehydrated and the old girls often suffer enough with desexing without being unwell before they start.

Never seen this in any greyhound I have had here..doesn't sound normal to me.

We are going through the same problems as many of you with our 13 yr old greyhound. Last summer I had every test possible done on her for her terrible panting, she just stares into space and pants and drools and having no teeth doesn't help the drooling. We had an Echo Cardiogram done by a heart specialist and his report was that she had nothing more than he would expect in an old greyhound. Our vet did bloods and nothing showed up the same with the back xray because she has a very dropped back and she will be sitting on the ground if her back legs collapse anymore. I used to wake up at around 1am and she would be just panting like crazy but the rest of our dogs were sound asleep so I would get up and take her outside to the patio to try and cool her down. Then came winter and we had our old crazy mad girl back again, she even did the 5km MPW very slowly but she finished. But a few months ago I started finding little parcels around the house, the first time I went to step over one of the dog beds and looked down to find a nice round ball of poop and a few weeks later another in the kitchen and then no more for a while, until one night after she had eaten her meal she went off down the yard to the toilet and then ran in the back door as usual and when I walked in the laundry she had left another nicely formed bundle of poop for me. She has never lost her appetite infact she eats twice as much as our other young greyhounds and then comes to the bench after tea for more but in the last 2 yrs has lost around 3kgs. She often while in the middle of her meal has to run off to go to the toilet and then comes back eats a little more and runs off again but that improved over winter and has just started up again. I am so worried about this summer, thank goodness we have air con as that's all she did last summer was spend all day under that. Our vet couldn't find anything wrong with her but was inclined to think it might be in her mind and we took her back tonight just for another check up and he said the same thing but she was so much better in the winter although where we rugged our other greys up in nice warm coats all winter we couldn't put anything but a very light one on her.
