  1. Stevie is a beautiful big black Lab x GR and she can bark on command, it's her favourite trick, but six days is a long time. I'd be able to be with her for a day, but would need to get someone else to look after her during the time, and not sure who would do that (that I'd trust), who doesn't also work full time. Hmmmm....
  2. :D I hope the banks are calling the police then! Wow, what scum indeed
  3. This particular merchant has been known to deduct further money? Or generally some merchants may have been known to deduct money from credit cards? If this particular merchant has done so then I think it would be a crime to report to the police, not a fair trading issue.
  4. Does anyone know where I can buy the basic Canex worm tablets? We've always had them free with the 6pack of Revolution, but now that seems to have stopped. Revolution has always done a great job for us so I just want to add the basic worm tablets to the routine, not try different products. The big tablets are handy because with three dogs 35kg, 15kg and 7kg I need to break them up into lots of different sizes!
  5. You're just amazing, Jed. I can't find the right words or emoticon for awe. Well done Stonebridge, FM and all who are donating. Great work all.
  6. I've also PMd MW as I live close to Bevo, but no answer. Has anyone heard from her, is she ok?
  7. Mine all seemed to ignore the fireworks but barked a bit at the other neighbourhood dogs barking. We have had random fireworks over the last few weeks. It's such a relief to not have to worry too much, we've had a thunder/fireworks manic dog in the past and even when she was ancient and could barely walk she'd still manage to move boulders and rip up fencing in her panic - and she was only about 8kg Aussie Terrier.
  8. I know I'm not the only DOLer who's thought of starting something like this, when we win lotto...
  9. This one doesn't any more, it's got holes in it! I think they need a few days to start working anyway. I've seen something similar but bigger and it was very stinky, more suitable for stables than suburban backyards. If I try again I'll tie the thing up securely!
  10. Yes, thanks, that's it! I was pretty sure if it was toxic I'd remember it from reading it at the shop, but wasn't 100%. That's a relief - panic over - back to normal programming.
  11. We mixed up and hung up one of those cheap plastic fly catcher thingies today. Just found Stevie chewing on the bottle, it must have blown down, and now I can't find the packaging anywhere (chucked out with xmas wrapping paper). She may have only ingested a very small amount because there was still some in the bottle and plenty on the floor. Does anyone know what I should be looking out for? To add to the mix, she had a massive day playing with grandchildren and eating sneaked bits of cheese, biscuits, sausages and BBQ scallops so she's likely to be weary and a bit 'off' anyway, in spite of best vigilance.
  12. It's so great to read of your improvement Jed. One step at a time, literally! But it sounds like all steps forward. Glad to hear also that little Chi Chi is fighting on strong, and your kitty is growing back fur. I'm becoming a bit of a bore with people about smoke detectors, torches, powerboards and so on - but after your experience (and J and MM), how can we help but be more aware and careful?
  13. Mixed feelings here that I don't quite understand, but I'm glad this clever, resourceful, capable, stubborn real Dog has great Humans looking out for him anyway. The right filmmaker would make this into one of those international classics, like crying camels.
  14. Great publicity! How does the government approve the trainers, and is there a list of them somewhere? I've been asked that about NSW and it can be a murky issue.
  15. I know it's not new news, but still, it's the man's own words and clear and simple - useful for future reference? Article in today's SMH: http://www.smh.com.au/world/science/regret...1124-187ho.html Extract (from the beginning of the article): How does it feel to invent something you later wish you hadn't? Simon Hattenstone talks to the people who know. The labradoodle If Wally Conron had known what was going to become of the labradoodle, he wouldn't have bred the dog in the first place. It was 22 years ago and Conron, now 81, was working as the breeding manager for the Royal Guide Dog Association of Australia when his boss set him a tough task. A blind woman from Hawaii had written asking if they could provide a guide dog that would not shed hair, because her husband was allergic to it. ''I said, 'Oh yes, this will be a piece of cake. The standard poodle is a working dog, it doesn't shed hair, it'll be great.' I tried 33 in the course of three years and they all failed. They just didn't make a guide dog.'' Advertisement: Story continues below Conron decided there was one possibility left: take his best labrador bitch and mate it with a standard poodle. They created three cross-breed puppies that needed to be boarded out to be trained and socialised but nobody would take them; everyone wanted a pure-bred. And that's when Conron came up with the name labradoodle. ''I went to our PR team and said, 'Go to the press and tell them we've invented a new dog, the labradoodle.' It was a gimmick and it went worldwide. No one wanted a cross-breed but the following day we had hundreds of calls from people wanting these master dogs.'' The labradoodle proved to be a brilliant dog for the blind and the woman in Hawaii was happy. So what was the problem? It's how the dog has been used and abused and sold under false pretences, Conron says. ''When the pups were five months old, we sent clippings and saliva to Hawaii to be tested with this woman's husband. Of the three pups, he was not allergic to one of them. In the next litter I had, there were 10 pups but only three had non-allergenic coats. Now, people are breeding these dogs and selling them as non-allergenic and they're not even testing them. ''All these backyard breeders have jumped on the bandwagon and they're crossing any kind of dog with a poodle. They're selling them for more than a pure-bred is worth and they're not going into the backgrounds of the parents of the dogs. There are so many poodle crosses having fits, problems with their eyes, hips and elbows; a lot have epilepsy. There are a few ethical breeders but very, very few.'' Conron says that despite the fact the dogs have helped so many blind people, he regrets creating the first cross-breed. ''I released a Frankenstein. … People say 'aren't you proud of yourself?' and I say, 'not in the slightest. I've done so much harm to pure breeding.'''
  16. So sorry for your loss Moselle. Makes us all hug our dogs a bit tighter tonight.
  17. I'm presuming this can cover mental health as well. Does the Act allow complaints to be re-heard? Not my complaint, someone else, but they might not want to follow up again anyway.
  18. Steve was the postage amount enough to cover costs? I think I'm getting one of the bigger parcels :p so please let me know if you need more $.
  19. Sorry MM I just saw this thread. I hope Danny is feeling better tonight and stops scaring his poor mum!
  20. I hope somebody is checking the state of the lightswitches at this place?
  21. I hate to be the misery-guts here but considering you haven't owned a dog before, and you haven't rented before, could you perhaps wait? Responsible pet ownership starts BEFORE you get a pet (as you are doing now by asking for thoughts). You have to consider that the dog may be with you for many years. Building up a good rental history might reduce the risk of having problems in the future. Also I remember renting when I was 20 and having to be home by a certain time (any time!) to feed/exercise a dog would have seriously constrained my social life - are you really not wanting to enjoy the fun part of first moving out of home? Maybe another type of pet would be a better start, if you want to build up references for renting with a pet? Responsible pet ownership may even mean NOT getting a dog. So many of them end up in pounds or otherwise rehomed, in spite of the owners' best intentions when they first bought them. Just putting this out there, of course there must be many responsible young people now renting who 15 years later will still have their dog with them.
  22. :p This section was created to keep the gory stories out of the General section, as so many people were upset by them there. It also made it easier to see if someone else had linked a story already, because there'd be three or four threads started for each dog attack. If you don't like it, don't read it. Is it any worse than looking at a news website or walking through a newsagency or supermarket checkout and seeing the headlines there? There's a 'suggestions' section right at the bottom, or you can PM Troy or push the report button if you find a thread particularly offensive.
  23. If anyone has contacts in Sydney, I'm VERY interested in sourcing some bunnies - both the fully cleaned human grade, and (mainly) the dog version with organs intact. We have a butcher nearby who has both farmed and wild bunnies but they seem quite pricey.
  24. Phoenix is beautiful and it's wonderful to read that you have a companion of your own again, Jed Please add me to the list of future book buyers. I've already learnt so much about dogs, life and philosophy from your posts, I'd love to be able to share you with my OH (who's not really convinced you can be real, when I tell him your incredible story).
  25. Bump I'm interested too I know there is a place near the highway south of Nowra, would like to know if it's any good?
