Dogs Nsw Day - We're Trying Herding Tomorrow!
Katdogs replied to Katdogs's topic in General Dog Discussion
Stupid heavy rain -
I remember finding a kitten in our primary school grounds that was gasping. We got three massive ticks off but she died in my arms while we worked on the other three or four. Poor little bush kitten must have fought so hard, all the ticks were massive. I also remember clearly several fast dashes to the vet with beloved dog or cat wobbling, puffing, with the 'tick eyes'. Once you've had the paralysis tick migraine yourself a couple of times, you don't forget it. Nothing beats the hands-on search, twice a day. Good luck little kitty, sounds like you're in good hands.

Not quite the same but didn't Centitout on DOL have two massive Bloodhound litters at the same time, a few years ago? One of her own and a rescue? I can't remember how many it added up to but her stories about them all were funny.

Dogs Nsw Day - We're Trying Herding Tomorrow!
Katdogs replied to Katdogs's topic in General Dog Discussion
Only if your dog is 100% reliable in a VERY crowded place with lots of dogs and people. So dogs that normally compete in obedience or other events may be fine but I wouldn't try taking a pet dog that hasn't been in that sort of situation before. There could easily be 1500 dogs on the ground showing and involved in the events not to mention all the people. If you want to see and get close to all the dogs on show it is probably easier to leave your dog at home. Is it bigger than the Spring Fair? Stevie was 100% at that (we don't count the antics when we were having a picnic lunch, and the only dog that reacted to her just before going in the ring had reacted to other dogs all day). She's also very good at petfest, oatley spring fair and fetes. -
Any DOLers going to Erskine Park this Saturday? Apologies if there's already a thread on this.

I met one at the Dogs NSW Spring Fair last year! All I know is CUTE!

Do People With Full Coated Breeds Use Coats In Winter?
Katdogs replied to a topic in General Dog Discussion
What I don't understand is why my dogs shed so much at this coldest time? Stevie produced a whole other dog's worth of undercoat today! She does this every year. This is the first winter I've put coats on my 6yo girls, they just seem a bit stiffer and crunchier in the joints this winter. -

Hey Sam it's like a whole nuther universe, isn't it! So many beautiful and fascinating things about China (and I only went to Shianghai), and so many challenging things too. Don't go into a pet shop -
So sorry Rach. You did everything you could for little Cookie and she knew love and fun, even if only for a few days. Hugs to your boys. Can you or the vet report this to the police?

New Fosters.. Guess The Breed Mix Time...
Katdogs replied to tdierikx's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
I've been lucky to spend a bit of time with these pups and they're all lovely little critters! I'm not a puppy person and never spent time with a whole litter - I didn't realise how different they can all be, in spirit as well as physically! Frodo is an adventurer and Bilbo is funny and Daisy is quiet but smart and strong and Lily is sweet and Peaches is the toughest! -
There was a freebie given out at last year's Sydney royal called Delete that is impressive. Not cheap but a colleague at work had a little dog with dementia and toileting issues and she found it amazing, at normal strength and also when she was selling her place and had to clean up some extra strong smelly yucky places. Eta dunno about septic system. I grew up with one and you have to be careful.

Homeless People In The City With Dogs
Katdogs replied to samoyedman's topic in General Dog Discussion
The couple of homeless blokes I've spoken to say that many people give them food, treats, worm and flea stuff for their dogs, to the point that they can share them with other homeless dog owners at the shelters if they go for a meal. There was a particularly lovely kelpie in Devonshire St tunnel last year, beautiful dog and the absolute centre of her companion's life. -
New Fosters.. Guess The Breed Mix Time...
Katdogs replied to tdierikx's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
I've met many of T's puppies but these really win on CUTE! They are lovely little creatures, very keen to come out of the pen to meet new people and then settling straight into a beautiful cuddle! Not scared of strange noises or scents, just interested as a properly raised pup should be. The variation in their coats is amazing and it would be lovely if their adopting families would keep in touch to share how they turn out as adults. I'm taking details of these to show my work colleague that there are nice pups in rescue. She gave up after a week and went to a pet shop last weekend and spent $1500 on a oodly-doo that looks to have jaw issues to me. -

Are there lights at Glebe Point park? We've only just discovered the wonderfulness of this park and Sydney Park for our Saturday afternoon adventures. -
Interesting perspective Here - they're looking at this as a way of reducing dumped pets. Is anyone from here on the taskforce? Did this replace Clover Moore's committee/taskforce? It seems to have very wide-ranging terms of reference - my bold. PET registration fees would rise and tenants could pay a "pet bond" to keep cats and dogs at rental properties under a policy shake-up to be considered by the state government. The changes, designed to slash the number of dogs and cats destroyed at pounds each year, would also streamline pet registration and microchipping and crack down on "puppy farmers" who breed dogs in overcrowded conditions. More than 70,000 dogs and 86,000 cats have been put down in NSW pounds in the past five years, representing one-third of dogs and almost 70 per cent of cats taken in. A companion animals taskforce chaired by the Charlestown MP, Andrew Cornwell, a veterinarian, has recommended measures to stamp out poor pet breeding and selling practices, and increase microchipping, desexing and registration of pets. It found that "pet-unfriendly" rental properties and strata homes drive up dumping rates and severely inhibit animal adoption from pounds and shelters. "In terms of renters, we think there is scope to create some sort of 'pet bond' [on top of] a standard property bond," said Mr Cornwell. "Some body corporates can also make pet ownership extremely difficult. There are many pets that make for a terrific companion animal in a strata environment, and there is no reason why you can't have greater flexibility." The taskforce recommended an increase in cat and dog registration fees to fund animal management programs. The existing "two-step" microchipping and registration process would be merged into one, updating registration details would be made easier, and rebates would be available to those who promptly desex their pets. Breeding guidelines would be enforceable and breeding licences would be mandatory to assist a crackdown on "puppy farmers" and irresponsible operators. Dog and cat advertisements would also be required to display a breeder number, enabling animals to be traced. "By having registration and enforceable guidelines, it sets very clear boundaries as to what is acceptable," Mr Cornwell said. "At the moment [the guidelines] are open to interpretation and it makes prosecution difficult." Minimum qualification standards would apply to pet shop staff, breeders and pound workers. The taskforce comprised animal welfare experts, vets, council officials and breeders. A discussion paper will be released for public comment on Monday. The RSPCA NSW chief executive, Steve Coleman, a taskforce member, said thousands of negligent backyard breeders were the biggest contributors to producing unwanted animals. "It won't take long for one or two of those types of suppliers to be prosecuted … it will all become too hard for them and knock them out of the supply chain," he said. The president of the Australian Association of Pet Dog Breeders, Kate Schoeffel, questioned whether mandatory licensing would capture all operators. "There are so many people with a dog in their backyard that might want to breed, that trying to licence every single person is a challenge," she said. A Tenants NSW senior policy officer, Chris Martin, praised moves to allow more renters to keep pets.

Powerlegs :poke: I have a holiday booked in a couple of weeks, otherwise would have helped out. I've always wanted to experience Peke, I remember a great character from All Creatures Great and Small that impressed me hugely when I was a child.
