Have used both a lot with rescue dogs and one special child of my own. I find rescue remedy pretty mild and she likes the taste but have never noticed much difference at all. The DAP infusers have been quite impressive in lots of households and we have the spray and collar from overseas as well. With the infusers on I have had difficult to toilet train dogs just stop going inside (was pretty to jump from the rooftops when I first put it on!!), my dogs don't guard the house as much, and don't actually follow me around the house anywhere near as much. Other clients have had dgs that would sit still for home medial treatments when they wouldn't have before. I have used the collars for stranger aware/anxious dogs and they work brilliantly, it's just a shame it looks like a flea collar and so I get grief from other dog people! The spray is handy for first time crate training rescue ogs who have not seen a crate and generally I don't have a problem getting them in there anymore, they are pretty keen. Have also noticed that when dog friends come over that they don't mark my house and yard as much either, sees they can't be bothered. Overall I would use RR but think it's pretty over-rated (personal opinion of course!!), the DAP is brilliant. Probably most value is the infusers and the collars. The infusers does a really big area so actually they work out pretty effective cost wise.

Some great advice here! The mouthing would almost definately be contributed by the lack of brain usage whilst she has needed to be confined. Lots more training and games when she is physically able and it will sette. I also find putting a toy into her mouth if she tries for mine also helps. My labs have never been "mouthers' but do frequently bring me toys!

For my girl, heaps of people in a clinic couldn't hold her down, but calm voices at home and just my family or myself present and I get much further. She has figured out vets/clinics and ears are scary! Treats only work early in the game, perhaps offer your girl treats just for going near the ear drops or cleaning products which sit on the floor or near a bed of hers. My girl is a funny one, 5 people couldn't hold her in a vet clinic for bloods and told me how pathetic my dog was! I single handedly collected blood from her in the car!! and have proceeded to collect blood multiple times at home as required, by myself! She just works out the pain/fear factor and then panics! would be funny from the outside thou!!!! Try the treat thing for just going near the stuff, when he uses his nose and links the ear treatment sitting on the floor with the treats (non stop treats on the floor too) then you may find she is calmer. Then sit with her and the ear cleaner and food. Lots of treats and don't touch the ears until you have to. Then firm restraint (often easier on the floor!) whilst some-one else places the ear drops and then mega cuddles! Good luck!

Most of the topical products are not able to be applied straight after a bath, usually need 24 hours plus delay after bath, so wouldn't really be applicable to a grooming business, could perhaps sell it for the client to apply thou.

My girl is just as much of a sook! She detests the alcohol based ear cleaners (even thou they work the best!) and any type of ear drop, frontline or topical flea control is also hysterical fun! Luckily my second girl is great! Have spent huge amounts of time getting her used to it but she is extremely quick to work it out when it's the real drops or treatment! My thoughts are with you, it isn't easy but do the best you can. Multiple people usually helps a lot! so does really cool treats!

Ideas For Giant Breed Vet Visit
alanglen replied to saintlysusan's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Yep I'm a vet and yes I would reccomend any dog that couldn't be restrained adequately to have sedation for ears to avoid any risk of causing damage to their ear drums. Yes I have been harsh but see it from our point of view, how harsh are you being, you don't want your vet being freindly to your dog?! Madness. As for the costing, you have accused your vet of being that money hungry, that they would intentionally rev up your dog to get the measly few dollars that they would make after paying for the sedation drug required for a 70kg dog, it's a pretty nasty accusation. Read the notes about the rotti posted above, extremely sensible and makes the pet health care team (you and your vet) have a chance to succeed. As for me giving you the third degree, I haven't, that would involve asking you questions which i have not. Perhaps you should give your vet a chance after speaking to them and considering how petty all this really sounds, yes I would refrain from mentioning the vets name, poor vet, they probably thought they were being nice! -
Ideas For Giant Breed Vet Visit
alanglen replied to saintlysusan's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
So control your dog and ask the vet to play after the examination. Why is there an issue here? Speak up, if you are willing to bag your vet on the internet you must feel strongly so take your dog to the vet, control it, and politely ask the vet to play afterwards, the vet is not going to care. Mind you I doubt that the play alone is enough to make any dog "need sedation". Many dogs need sedation for ear examinations and that's a fact of life. Cut your nice vet a break and get real. -
Well done for completing the post, good luck with your little girl.

Ideas For Giant Breed Vet Visit

Why have they ever mentioned how much money they make off him? Doubt it, perhaps it's your mindset that counts the dollars but I doubt that why they play with him on the floor, perhaps they just like him! Perhaps the world would be a brighter place for you if you looked upon it as a vet who likes my dog! ok so feel free to ask the vet to play after the examination if you would prefer but cuddles cost nothing and vets often prefer to relax the patient first but if your boy needs the discipline then politely ask for you to be able to hold him and then have playtime after. You really need to get waay from the money mindset, and if you really believe that your vet is playing with him to make money off sedation then either go to the vet board, change vets or change attitudes. Personally I would think you should be happy. Sorry if that's not what you wanted to hear but you were asking! -
Perhaps see the hdyrotherapy/physio centre there in brisbane, I hear they do magic stuff, they certainly have all the gear. Further muscle and bone development can be aided by the water treadmill and they can help with that! Good luck

mmmm a vet getting into trouble for being nice to your dog.... the tables have turned, be thankful that your vet actually likes dealing with your dog! Not all vets like dealing with 70kg of bouncing pup who won't sit still. I can't imagine that they would deliberately excite the dog, but it is your job to control your dog. Teach him what is expected of him when he needs to be examined. If 70kg isn't well behaved that exams are next to impossible and sedation is often required. PS costs are high when your dogs weighs 70kg, that's just a fact of life! Sorry i can't be of more help but it really sounds like your problem not the vets. -
Canine Degenerative Disc Disease - Your Experience?
alanglen replied to catzatsea's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Been down the path, had surgery and was then best thing we ever did, very long road to recovery and lots of good hydrotherapy and mscle work really helped but we did wait too long until he had no use of his hindlegs, in hindsight I would have had the surgery done earlier as there were warning signs but he's all good now! -
My Dog's Skin Has Changed Colour!
alanglen replied to Sally's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Whilst it can be normal, it can also be the first sign of many endocrinological problems like cushings disease which is very common in malt's. Trip to the vets and if all clear then forget about it for a while! -
What Are The Choices With Desexing?
alanglen replied to Ellis's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Talk to your vet and unless you want to show her, book in for desexing. all of the other drugs mentioned above have csary side effects and bone marrow suppression etc is simply not worth it. Consider her health before her looks. PS the changes in growth plate closure are only for early age desexing, so under 8-12 weeks (depending on breed). Several of the top agility dogs here in Victoria were desexed early and almost all in teh top levels are desexed. -
Well I completely love my training and enjoy my competition days! I do enjoy training more than comp days but we learnt to have fun in the comp days but not taking everything too seriously! I don't own a dog sport mad bred so we work to our own standards and levels and have a blast doing it! My grls love the games and the rewards and really aren't fussed about me getting a ribbon! Mind you we do the best with teh more relaxed attitude. It's all about fun!

Or K9 agility on thursday nights at KCC park. Very good foundation course for training agility, lots of drive and technique work, can be competitive/serious at times!

The name was changed to "Canine Cough" about a year ago when too many people's dogs where getting sick from meeting dogs in the park etc, it just seems the name has never taken off!!

Perhaps suggest Berwick too, they train at Narre Warren which would be equally as close and have severl fun things to do, like flyball, obedience, agility etc. -
Will be there with the nutty lure chasing labradors! Sounds great, can you please give me the times because I can't find it on the websites events page. Sounds like great fun, her favourite thing in the world! Thanks Alanglen

Whippets And Kidney Disorder
alanglen replied to Crits'N'Bits's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
The urine test I was talking about is to check for myoglobinuria. When the muscles break down they produce myoglobin (looks like miscroscopic blood in the urine but is specifically from the muscle degradtion caused by the snake venom) and the kidneys have a very hard time allowing this out which in turn can do damage to the kidneys, aka frequently causing kidney failure. The urine test checks for myoglobinuria and if present he drip is continued until clear. Once clear then the rates can be turned down slowly to allow the normal concentrating ability of the kidneys to return. It is difficult to put ourselves into the position that you and your vet were in. Most areas do not have 24 hour vet facilities available to them and so drips can get blocked, we hate it when it happens but it does, unless vets and nurses are there to hear the monitors beep then the fluids stop. In an idea orld things may have been different but unfortunately we cannot turn back the clock for your boy. And yes to those that asked, I do have a vets degree. -
Westernport Agility Trial & Events Calendar
alanglen replied to JulesP's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I'll be there but for the first time, only 1 mad labrador! The other is not well enough and will be safely tucked away at home on the couch! She is enjoying the beginning of her rest period and happily leaves us at the door when the wind is howling and we are going out to exercise! The younger lab only has a few classes so we are going for fun day out in hopefully some sunshine! Th trial is apparently being held on the front lawns so should be lots of fun! -
I agree, whilst I do feed eggs and chicken, it is also the number one and two suspect causes behind salmonella. It has been cultured many times for faecal samples and is certainly a problem in dogs. Best of luck with treating your little one!

Doggie Dancing With Larger Dogs?
alanglen replied to KitKat's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Most of the freestylers down here in Victoria look for bigger dogs rather than smaller dogs! Search the web and watch the border collies, especially attila the german filmclip, they are amazing! check out the world federation of canine freestyle on the web and they have several clips attached, about 90% are big dogs! and it's lots of fun! -
Whippets And Kidney Disorder
alanglen replied to Crits'N'Bits's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Whippets certinaly aren't one of the common "kidney problem" breeds. My first thought was possibly tht he still had some muscle damage happening and that put too much pressure on the kidneys. When these patients are in critical care, they can be on drips for days, weeks or even a couple that were happy and looked healthy but needed the drip for a month! There is a specific urine test to tell you when they are ok to take off the drip safely and until that is clear they should stay on. Many do survive with coming off early but the odd one won't cope coming off early and go into kidney failure. Don't feel you have missed anything in your boy. If he truly had congenital kidney disease then I wouldn't have thought he could make it through the initial stages of snake bite. By the way, Australian law says you have a right to a copy of all medical records and test results. Xrays are meant to stay at a medical facility for 7 years but copies of the bloods etc shouldn't be an issue. Hopefully this helps a little. May your boy rest in peace.
