I have been using it for a little while, you can buy it from the supermarket, latest brand i have is Cornwells Premium apple cider vinegar... i have been told it also helps with flea control.. apparently increases the dogs acidic rate to the point where fleas can't stay on the dog... i add one cap full to the adult dogs meals...

Training Different Dogs And Different Sports
bordacollies4me replied to JulesP's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
not sure how i cope, but i have 3 adult Bc's.. one 7 he trains and competes in Agility, Flyball and Frisbee... then the 3 year old Trains and Competes in Agility and Frisbee and is training in Flyball, the youngster is 18mths and about to start competing in Agility, already competes in Frisbee and is also in training for Flyball... i have just added a new addition and he will be trained for all three sports as well... i do frisbee once a week down at the local park... Agility once a week at club and then home training at least 2 other afternoons... flyball if i can get to club once a week i go, if not maybe once or twice a week at home.. although am about to start a group up closer to me so that will be a once a week thing so Flyball will become a regular occurence next year hopefully.... have also started them on sheep herding.. but am thankful it is too far away and only attend weekend workshops when they are held close to home... i work a full time job 9 day a fortnight... training sessions at home are short fast and fun maybe lasting 10 min each dog.. -
Good luck for next time! How long will you have to wait? not long am going to a new years ADAA trial held in bundaberg, will be running all three dogs, i have taken a week off work afterwards i think i will need it LOL... at least it will give me a bit of extra time for training... I've been told the NYE trial is a heap of fun...take lots of drinkies. Mel. certainly is have been for the last two years definetly a trial to attend, for a fun weekend away... nice and relaxed during the days and we compete at night- due to the heat- although its not too bad... am planning on camping for a few days before hand....

How To Teach Stay To A 6mth Puppy
bordacollies4me replied to chloebear's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
How would i teach a stay, probably completly different than those described... i start with my dog or puppy, first teaching them a sit using click and reward, do not cue the sit until i know the dog will offer a sit, when the dog offers a sit and i can predict when they are about to do it i then cue it... once i cue it the first time i then quickly reward at least 5 times for being in the sit position... then i release with the release word... i then build on this by asking dog to sit and getting those rewards in for holding position.... i gradually increase the time between rewrds and then vary the positions around my body, in front and both sides.. when dog will sit once being told without breaking in various positions, i then work on distance... start beside my dog, make a slight forward body movement or right knee movement, and C/R for holding do this a few times release do g play game... gradually i increase the body movement to 1/2 step one step 2 steps etc..... doing this whilst mnaintaing criteria of dog is not allowed to have any forward movement... at no point have i asked the dog to stay or used any hand signals, only cue is for dog to sit... then i build upon this further by walking further away, taking 2 stepos facing the dog rewarding, when i start to move around the dog i do so gradually rewarding frequently for holding position gradually working my way around the dog untill i can walk all around, i don't walk closely around i gice the dog a bit of space at initial training... if the dog breaks at anystage i don't reprimand i say nothing put them back into position move away and reward for holding position.... Its the dogs choice to stay and if they do so then they will be rewarded... if they break i have probably asked too much and take a small step back... then challenge again... i always release at times to have a play session, or stress breaking session... This method works well for me.... -
Favourite Training Book?
bordacollies4me replied to leopuppy04's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
well just finished watching Susan Garretts new Crate Training DVD.... and i would give it a definite 10 out of 10..... -
i think sometimes in young or green dogs with lots of speed they just need to find their rhythm... i have a super quick weaver, she had some trouble getting rhythm... what i was told to do was to use 6 sets of 2 x2 weaves, lay a rope through the centre of them all, and then slightly open them all up, and i mean slightly, and they all have to be the same angle, creates a bit of a channel for the dog, it is amazing what an extra 10mm of gap does... do a few reps of these and then go back to straight poles... did it help my girl.. i believe it did somewhat, we now have rhythm and have kept her speed...to get her to check her stride before the entry i have been working on doing a full height jump just before i have it rather close, at the moment 3ft away, so she has to think about the entry a bit more, and she is still maintaining her speed...

What To Enter At Bundaberg Adaa Trial?
bordacollies4me replied to stephenb's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
hey thats cool, with a bit of luck Mysta will measure just under 500 which will put him in the midi class, if he is just over like two of my BC's then he will be in MAxi class... I will be starting my youngest girl at the trial and she will probably be a maxi also... So have you thought about the pairs event, would you like a partner for Mysta, i would be more than happy to use one of mine...in the pairs events maxi dogs get to jump at Midi height You may not remember me i used to be at Turkey Beach came along to your club a few years back with my young pup and older dog - Buddy Buddy now has his SAAD title and is well on his way for his MAAD, needs a snooker for his Games(AAGD) title and 2 passes for his team(AATD) title... if we can acheive all this he will then be a AAC(Aust Agility Champion) If you think Mysta will measure over 500 it is probably better to enter him in Maxi class.... -
What To Enter At Bundaberg Adaa Trial?
bordacollies4me replied to stephenb's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
no problem being entered in both rings, they usually try and make sure your runs will not clash, but if it does happen it does not matter, we all usually work around it by either allowing someone to slot in or run a bit further down the order... What heights are your dogs????, are you guys from Gladstone by any chance???? -

Testing A Puppy For Drive
bordacollies4me replied to JulesP's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
its been interesting for me lately, watching a litter of BC pups grow up, mum and dad are both high drive dogs, and at 4 weeks all pups are very active all interact with toys, it is hard to pick the laid back one, anytime i think yep that pup is a bit laid back, next thing it is on the go and very active.... when i picked my youngest girl, she wasn't the most outgoing in the litter but i knew she had the potential to be a med-high drive dog... which she has turned out to be now just got to focus all her energy onto agility equipment, she is doing well... -
Can Someone Please Explain
bordacollies4me replied to Daggles's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
If you don't want to use a check chain the don't and don't let anyone, make you feel intimidated enough to use one.. years ago i showed up at an obedience club with a gentle leader on my 6 month old pup, the trainer came up and told me i would need a check chain, i asked why does she think that... the reply was simply that the dog was too young to weara halti/gentle leader... lucilky for me i had enough experience in the use of the gentle leader and the check chain to explain that i would be continuing using the gentle leader and not a check chain... i also had my dog in a crate and played crate games, they also couldn't understand this.. and when i pulled out a tug toy for a play session they were quite confused as well... i think it comes back to some trainers know what they know and are comfortable with it and if approached with something new they may feel out of their comfort zone and would prefer all class members use what they know how to deal with... -
ADAA have a regular program for older dogs, jumps are lower than their normal jump height, A-frame lower, no tyre or spread jumps allowed... is working out to be great and am seeing alot more older dogs still continuing on and doing well

Dog Bored With Agility?!?
bordacollies4me replied to Carrathool's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
if she loves the frisbee... you need to transfer the value of the frisbee to the agility equipment... ie: dog does jump gets frisbee, the progress 2 jumps for the frisbee, same with other obstacles until she loves agility as much as the frisbee, make her work for the frisbee... -

i'm sure i will be able to get plenty of local dogs, had heaps of interest at our microchipping day, when i handed out the BARK flyers, but when i said clinics are currently being held around brisbane most wouldn't travel that far... the demo at the RSPCA pet expo will be sure to get lots more interest..... was thinking what if we had a survey for people to fill out whether they would be interested or not... -
hi all anyone in these areas interested in some sheep herding have just seen there is to be a herding clinic in the Maryborough/Gympie area on 13th/14th October....... anyone else interested pm me and i will give you the contact details of the organisers....

have to agree with tollersowned mine do not start actual weave training until they are around 18 months or i feel are mature enough to cope with the training..would not be before 16 months.. i do however like to teach them a spin both left and right, perch work, ladder work, and do lots of stretching ex with them up until the stage of actual weave training and never stop for the rest of their lives, i believe this can help in the development of the muscles used for weaving and may help prevent any possible injuries caused by weaving.
