Cloth Tunnel Dimensions
bordacollies4me replied to Reddii's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
hey i make mine out of a 44 gallon drum... cloth section made out of heavy cotton drill material... i weld legs onto the drum, and attach cloth section with 2inch upholsterers velcro... cloth section is the circumfrence of the drum at one end and 200 mm wider at the exit... cloth section is approx 3m in length... also sew in a couple loops at the exit end so as to be able to peg it down... -
looking forward to seeing some doggy dancing routines... i have been playing around with some things myself... maybe one day i miught put it all together into a routine....

i train 2o2o contacts Why??? because it gives the dog a job to do is much safer if taught properly as the dog learns to rock its weight backwards whilst driving into position... if dog is handstanding then i would reccommend doing a lot of rear end awarness work to help dogs deal with their backends... after attending some LOH seminars on the weekends it was very apparent that we all skip over the foundation stuff required to have a great 2o2o with lots of understanding for the dog... with my new puppy and with my older dogs over the next few months we will be concentrating on the foundation excersises and contact games i play to get solid contact performance from my dogs...

just bumping this thread... early entries have closed for Agility, late entries close soon... is looking to be a great weekend of doggy action... have heard there are over 60 dogs entered in the Agility.. some great doggy stuff will be for sale as well so even if your dog isn't competing you should be able to find something there for you...

Agility Training In Brisbane
bordacollies4me replied to tasha's mum's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
On the southside you have 4 options that I know of. BAD (Brisbane Agility Dog Club) trains at Carina on a Wednesday night. They cater for dogs from 11 months old and up so you really need a good recall and a bit of focus on your dog before you begin there. The beginners course is about a little more expensive (don't remember, but it wasn't that bad), but ongoing training once you've done that is $5 a night. They are really good and have helped me with my girl. Great bunch of people. ADCQ (Agility Dog Club of Queensland) train at Tivoli on a Sunday night. They cater to dogs from 8 weeks and up. Their program is really good in that they start with the basics and teach all the obedience etc you need for a good AGILITY dog (ie: not classic/trial obedience, but the agility tools you need). The basic courses are about $40 to $50 for six weeks depending on what level you are at and then ongoing training is $4 a night I think. I run my younger boy here and then my girl in the class after. Again, great bunch of people really dedicated to those who are dedicated to their dogs. Both these clubs are ADAA affiliated and I can't recommend either of these two clubs highly enough. The other two options I have heard good things about, but have not trained at so can't really comment. One group train at the Mt Gravatt Show Grounds on a Thursday night and the other is attached to the Redlands Dog Obedience Club. One other more expensive, but much more relaxed option is the Dog Sport classes at RSPCA. Great bunch of people and not really into trialling so the training is heaps of fun and lots of laughs, but not as hard core as the other clubs. (I play flyball with a couple of the people from there.) Works out to about $15 a lesson. Thank you so much! I might have to go for the ADCQ training. I am still trying to teach my dog the basic obedience despite sending her for a week's training with a dog obedience trainer :D Sorry for being a pain, whereabouts is Tivoli? I am really excited to start her back from basics again ADCQ Tivoli in Ipswich, train at the musketeers sports grounds on Sunday afternoons for more info check out www.adaa.com.au then go to clubs you will find a list of all adaa affiliated clubs and locations and contacts to each... -
Looks fantastic but where is flyball??? :p was wondering that myself... :D

Have received and viewed Greg Derretts latest DVD Great Dog Great HAndler The winning Combination would rate it another great training source, ideally for the bit more experienced handler and only for those who have watched his other dvd's and are utilizing his handling methods... ' So if you have watched Great Dog shame about the handler... and have been trianing using his handling system then i fully reccommend it.. 2 from me -
Sacking Your Obedience Dog

happy to be of assistance... if you are unable to find them in NZ you could try www.cleanrun.com they ship internationally... The stuff i reccommended are DVD's which in my opinion are easier to learn from than books... some great books/magazines to get would be Susan Garretts - Shaping Success Clean run Special editions - Puppy Training Issue - Handling Issue - Motivation Issue - Weave issue - Contact Issue and Jump Issue Clicker Basice for Dogs/ Puppies by Carolyn Barney Control Unleashed by Leslie McDevitt Flyball is also a great sport for dogs and little dogs are wanted by most teams for height dogs especially those fast little dogs... -
Puppy Games For Future Agility Work
bordacollies4me replied to Noahs Ark's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
their is loads of stuff you can be doing with your new puppy in preperation for Agility Restrained recalls- you simply can't do enough of these Circle Work- getting your pup do run beside you around in circles, with the pup on the inside and outside on both sides of your body Hand Targets- this is the start of my Contact training... Can build confidence walking on a small plank on the ground, once confident put a couple of bricks under to raise it off the ground... Once the pup has been taught to target a piece of perspex, or icecream lid, this can be added to end of plank for a 2on 2off nose target... may not be real important for a little dog but is still something taht can be taught to a young dog... Start Line stay- Sit Stay.. VERY Important we all need a solid start line from our dogs Teach your pup directional commands- spin left and right can be used later on to help direct over jumps Puppies believe it or not can start jump training, but i use jump bumps. which are pvc pipe cut in half when laid on the ground looks like a speed bump... for a Papillon i would use 3inch pipe cut in half... You can add jump uprights to the jump bumps, practise start lines also start handling manouvres- 90degree turn, 180 degree turn, 270 degree turn, speed circles, Front cross, rear cross, Pull Through, Push through, Serpentine... Crate Training, pups can learn self control, finding entrances is just a great way to spend time training your puppy I fully reccommend you purchase Greg Derretts Agility Foundation Training and Susan Garretts Success with one jump, and Crate Games, another good one is wendy papes Games to enhance training.. has 16 tug games you can play with your dog/puppy these can be purchased at www.airdogs.com.au or www.agilityclick.com Good Luck with your training sounds like you are off to a great start all ready -
i've taught one of mine to jump up into my arms... does she like it yes.. it is a fav trick... i have put it on cue to prevent her doing it at will.. which started to happen so saw the need for a cue... i am also using it to teach her to bank off me in the opp direction for the frisbee... she does land with a punch but i brace myself then ask her as she gets there i release the frisbee she learnt quickly the difference of with a frisbee she can bank off me without it i will catch her.. will i teach the others possibly... how did i teach it.. started picking her up and saying jump eventually she started a little jump action , i then progressed until she would offer a higher jump to be caught... and then a full launch into my arms...

* with a clicker * a very high rate of reinforcment, dog was a food vaccum for the first few paces... * then keeping the reinforcement high and clicking for all four feet on the ground head high and towards me... * gradually fade the rewards so you can heel in anywhere with minimal rewards , and only using rewards now and then to keep dog on its toes and never knowing when a reward is on the way... How long did it take??? Not completly sure but 6 - 8 sessions with my new puppies have them in a nice heel position which is when i start to fade the rewards... really all depends on how often you train and rate of reinforcement... Higher rate of reinforcement quicker the dog will learn the behaviour...

Favourite Training Book?
bordacollies4me replied to leopuppy04's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Can you give us a run down on what it covers? This is one I'm really interested in sorry to take so long to reply... but exactly what the previous post says... in the info taklen off the clean run site... Susan shows how to train the dog to love its crate, slightly different than what i previously do.. or have been taught the best thing about this dvd is that you actually see Susan training crate games... how to use the crates for a solid start line stay, teaching dogs to find difficult tunnel/contatc entries... how she trains her dogs to be quiet in their crates whilst working her other dogs(this is what mine need the most) Well worth it for the price... I would give it 3 I have just Finished reading Leslie McDevitts CONTROL UNLEASHED also 3 very informative and a definete 10 out of 10 great for any dog owner... looks more to games we can polay for reactive as well as shut down dogs, how to help dogs get over stress issues... Another DVD i have also recently watched is Wendy PAPEs Games to Enhance Training... is good for those that need to enhance their tug games or those wanting to learn differetn games to play with their dogs.. has 16 different tug games to play with your dog... 2 Another place to purchase stuff in aus is www.airdogs.com.au very competitive prices -
you could always just to jumpers trials they have no contact equipment at all...

Positive Trainers: What Would You Do?
bordacollies4me replied to laffi's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Jules - I do this too. My B/C is only 4mo so most of the time he wont come to me, especially if he realises I dont have food. But if I run the other way, most of the time, he just watches me run off. He wont chase a ball either. He lays down and watches the ball roll past his face. Is this because he's just a pup and eventually he will get the urge to run after me and play ball? I think the reason he's not chasing me is because either whatever he is doing (like digging) is way more fun than chasing me round the yard or he's just not looking at me run away and doesnt notice that's what I'm doing. i don't think he will eventually figure it out if yoiu don't work on it... with my young pups i get them to first chase my hand... i sit on the ground with the pup on lead if neccesary and start a bit of a game lightly rough housing the pup .. once they are switched on i then encourage them to chase my hand.. play session is usually about 3 -5 minutes... once i have them turned on and chasing my hand i stop whilst they want more... when it takes little time to turn them on.. i then stand up and play the game until i have it so that the will chase me once they catch me i offer my hand for a rough house game shove them away and run the other direction... it is at this point i will introduce a tug toy and rather than target my hand get them to target the tug toy... same procedure i then build this until i have their focus on the tug toy and then i toss the toy about 1 foot infront of them to chase and retrieve... my 4 mth old BC will happily chase a toy and bring it back for more.... ETA: i still play the chase me game with my adult dogs they love it -

Positive Trainers: What Would You Do?
bordacollies4me replied to laffi's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
it is a bit hard with those answers and i would use most in different situations No 1: go & phsically take the dog I do do this with young pups in the back yard who i know do not understand the come command... No 2: repeat the command till dog comes never No 3: wait with out repeating command.. sometimes in certain situations in the back yard but only for a short period or if in training and dog is on a long line.. give them the choice to come if they do throw a huge party lots of praise and rewards...if they don't within a reasonable amount of time reel them in with the lead... No 4: Run in opp direction i use this if at Agility training with a bit more older dog.. if they run off to visit another dog or person i take off in the opp direction usually towards the dark end of the field or towards trees so i can hide... -
